Abstract:The visible Universe is largely characterised by a single mass scale, namely, the proton mass, m p . Contemporary theory suggests that m p emerges as a consequence of gluon self-interactions, which are a defining characteristic of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions in the Standard Model. However, the proton is not elementary. Its mass appears as a corollary of other, more basic emergent phenomena latent in the QCD Lagrangian, e.g. generation of nuclear-size gluon and quark mass-scales, and a unique effective charge that may describe QCD interactions at all accessible momentum scales. These remarks are explained herein, and focusing on the distribution amplitudes and functions of π and K mesons, promising paths for their empirical verification are elucidated. Connected therewith, in anticipation that production of J / ψ -mesons using π and K beams can provide access to the gluon distributions in these pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes, predictions for all π and K distribution functions are provided at the scale ζ = m J / ψ .

Abstract:In physics, we construct idealized mathematical models in order to explain various phenomena which we observe or create in our laboratories. In this article, I recall how sophisticated mathematical models evolved from the concept of a number created thousands of years ago, and I discuss some challenges and open questions in quantum foundations and in the Standard Model. We liberated nuclear energy, landed on the Moon and built 'quantum computers'. Encouraged by these successes, many believe that when we reconcile general relativity with quantum theory we will have the correct theory of everything. Perhaps we should be much humbler. Our perceptions of reality are biased by our senses and by our brain, bending them to meet our priors and expectations. Our abstract mathematical models describe only in an approximate way different layers of physical reality. To describe the motion of a meteorite, we can use a concept of a material point, but the point-like approximation breaks completely when the meteorite hits the Earth. Similarly, thermodynamic, chemical, molecular, atomic, nuclear and elementary particle layers of physical reality are described using specific abstract mathematical models and approximations. In my opinion, the theory of everything does not exist.

Abstract:We introduce different mass scales corresponding to the Universe, fermion stars, mini boson stars, Planck black holes, the electron, the neutrino, and the cosmon. These mass scales are obtained by combining the maximum mass of fermion stars, boson stars and soliton stars set by quantum mechanics and general relativity with the Eddington relation connecting the mass me of the electron to the cosmological constant Λ . In this manner, we can express the mass of these objects in terms of the fundamental constants of physics G , c , ħ and Λ . By normalizing the mass Ma of these objects by the Planck mass MP , we find that Ma/MP∼χa/6 , where χ∼ρP/ρΛ∼10120 is the "largest large number" in Nature (the ratio of the Planck density on the cosmological density) and a=3,2,1,0,−1,−2,−3 for the Universe, fermion stars, mini boson stars, Planck black holes, the electron, the neutrino, and the cosmon respectively. This formula suggests an interesting symmetrical mass scale law connecting cosmophysics (Universe, fermion stars, mini boson stars) to microphysics (electron, neutrino, cosmon). A generalization of this law including the earth mass and another neutrino mass scale is proposed. We highlight an accurate form of Eddington relation me≃α(Λħ4/G2)1/6 or Λ≃G2me6/α6ħ4=α−6(me/MP)6lP−2 , where α=e2/ħc≃1/137 is the fine structure constant, and provide different heuristic derivations of this relation. We consider another relation Λ=Gc(mΛ∗)4/ħ3=(mΛ∗/MP)4lP−2 , where mΛ∗=(Λħ3/Gc)1/4 is the neutrino mass. We relate these relations to the two expressions of the vacuum energy density given by Zeldovich in 1968. We suggest that the dark energy particle (cosmon) of mass mΛ=ħΛ/c could be a quantum of mass and entropy so that Λ=mΛ2c2/ħ2=(mΛ/MP)2lP−2 . We relate the large number 10120 to the total number of degrees of freedom (or number of cosmons) in the universe. Finally, we give hints how to possibly solve the cosmological constant problem, the cosmic coincidence problem, and the large number coincidence problem.

Abstract:An approach to gauge theory in the context of locally conformally flat space–time is described. It is discussed how there are a number of natural principal bundles associated with any given locally conformally flat space–time X. The simplest of these principal bundles is the bundle PX(G) with structure group G = U(2, 2). An 11-dimensional bundle Q with structure group a certain seven-dimensional group K is constructed by a method involving a reduction of structure group for the bundle PX(G). It is shown how the gauge groups U(1), SU(2), and SU(3) can be derived from the geometry of locally conformally flat space–time. Fock spaces of multiparticle states for the fields of the standard model are constructed in the context of bundles with these groups as structure groups. Scattering and other particle interaction processes are defined in terms of linear maps between multiparticle state spaces. A technique for computing analytically and/or computationally the masses of the elementary particles is described. This method involves the computation of a certain quantity called the integral mass spectrum for a given family of particles and then the masses of the particles in the family are determined to be the locations of the peaks of the integral mass spectrum. The method is applied successfully in the electroweak sector to the cases of the charged leptons, μ and τ, and the Z0 particle.

Abstract:Semantic clusters of a domain form an important feature that can be useful for performing syntactic and semantic disambiguation. Several attempts have been made to extract the semantic clusters of a domain by probabilistic or taxonomic techniques. However, not much progress has been made in evaluating the obtained semantic clusters. This paper focuses on an evaluation mechanism that can be used to evaluate semantic clusters produced by a system against those provided by human experts.

Abstract:The mass spectrum problem (the 14th Ginzburg's problem) is analyzed in terms of the conventional reductional and alternative holistic frameworks. From the holistic viewpoint, substance (the same as energy) is the primary concept and particles are secondary and emergent. An axiomatic system is proposed where the basic notion of the spectrum of matter is defined, and the particle spectrum emerges as a result of the energy/mass quantization. A new mass formula is derived in terms of the quantum numbers related to the Lorentz group Casimir eigenvalues. It is shown that the masses of states in the lepton and hadron sectors of the spectrum of matter are proportional to the electron rest mass (quantum of mass) with an accuracy of $0,41\%$ on average.

Phenomenological mass relation for free massive stable particles and estimations of neutrino and graviton masses

Abstract:The ratio between the proton and electron masses was shown to be close to the ratio between the shortest lifetimes of particles, decaying by the electromagnetic and strong interactions. The inherent property of each fundamental interaction is defined, namely the Minimal lifetime of the interaction (MLTI). The rest mass of the Lightest free massive stable particle (LFMSP), acted upon by a particular interaction, is shown to be inversely proportional to MLTI. The found mass relation unifies the masses of four stable particles of completely different kinds (proton, electron, electron neutrino and graviton) and covers an extremely wide range of values, exceeding 40 orders of magnitude. On the basis of this mass relation, the electron neutrino and graviton masses have been approximately estimated to 6.5x10^(-4) eV/c^2 and H*h_bar/c^2 = 1.5x10^(-33) eV/c^2, respectively. Besides, the last value has been obtained independently by dimensional analysis by means of the fundamental parameters speed of light (c), reduced Planck constant (h_bar) and Hubble distance (H). It was shown that the equivalent energy of LFMSP, acted upon by a particular interaction, is close to Breit-Wigner's energy width of the shortest living state, decaying by the respective interaction.

Abstract:Mass is a fundamental property and an important fingerprint of atomic nucleus.It provides an extremely useful test ground for nuclear models and is crucial to understand energy generation in stars as well as the heavy elements synthesized in stellar explosions.Nuclear physicists have been attempting at developing a precise,reliable,and predictive nuclear model that is suitable for the whole nuclear chart,while this still remains a great challenge even in recent days.Here we employ the Fourier spectral analysis to examine the deviations of nuclear mass predictions to the experimental data and to present a novel way for accurate nuclear mass predictions.In this analysis,we map the mass deviations from the space of nucleon number to its conjugate space of frequency,and are able to pin down the main contributions to the model deficiencies.By using the radial basis function approach we can further isolate and quantify the sources.Taking a pedagogical mass model as an example,we examine explicitly the correlation between nuclear effective interactions and the distributions of mass deviations in the frequency domain.The method presented in this work,therefore,opens up a new way for improving the nuclear mass predictions towards a hundred kilo-electron-volt accuracy,which is argued to be the chaos-related limit for the nuclear mass predictions.

Abstract:Most of the mass of everyday objects resides in atomic nuclei; the total of the electrons' mass adds up to less than one part in a thousand. The nuclei are composed of nucleons---protons and neutrons---whose nuclear binding energy, though tremendous on a human scale, is small compared to their rest energy. The nucleons are, in turn, composites of massless gluons and nearly massless quarks. It is the energy of these confined objects, via $M=E/c^2$, that is responsible for everyday mass. This article discusses the physics of this mechanism and the role of lattice gauge theory in establishing its connection to quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract:George Gamow’s liquid drop model of the nucleus can account for most of the terms in the formula and gives rough estimates for the values of the coefficients. Its semi-numerical equation was first formulated in 1935 by Weizsacker and in 1936 Bethe [1, 2], and although refinements have been made to the coefficients over the years, the structure of the formula remains the same today. Their formula gives a good approximation for atomic masses and several other effects, but does not explain the appearance of magic numbers of protons and neutrons, and the extra binding-energy and measure of stability that are associated with these numbers of nucleons. Mavrodiev and Deliyergiyev [3] formalized the nuclear mass problem in the inverse problem framework. This approach allowed them to infer the underlying model parameters from experimental observation, rather than to predict the observations from the model parameters. They formulated the inverse problem for the numerically generalized semi-empirical mass formula of Bethe and von Weizsacker going step-by-step through the AME2012 [4] nuclear database. The resulting parameterization described the measured nuclear masses of 2564 isotopes with a maximal deviation of less than 2.6 MeV, starting from the number of protons and number of neutrons equal to 1. The unknown functions in the generalized mass formula was discovered in a step-by-step way using the modified procedure realized in the algorithms developed by Aleksandrov [5-7] to solve nonlinear systems of equations via the Gauss-Newton method. In the presented herein article we describe a further development of the obtained by [3] formula by including additional factors,- magic numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons. This inclusion is based the well-known experimental data on the chemically induced polarization of nuclei and the effect of such this polarization on the rate of isotope decay. It allowed taking into account resonant interaction of the spins of nuclei and electron shells. As a result the maximal deviation from the measured nuclear masses of less than 1.9 MeV was reached. This improvement allowed prediction of the nuclear characteristics of the artificial elements 119 and 120.

Abstract:The relationship between mathematics and physics has long been an area of interest and speculation. Subscribing to the recent definition by Tegmark, we present a mathematical structure involving the only division rings - the real, $\mathbb{R}$, the complex, $\mathbb{C}$, and the quaternion, $\mathbb{H}$ - known to meet the requirements of a mathematical description of our universe. The known forces and particle structure, in terms of families and color, can be associated with natural relationships within that structure. A "toy" scientific theory - based on the proposed mathematical structure - is presented to illustrate its applicability. It is shown how parity and time reversal invariance are broken. Two relevant predictions come from the formalism. First, there are no gravity waves and second, matter comes in three varieties, one of which is "dark" in the sense that it is oblivious to electromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:The simplest version of the Duflo-Zuker mass model (due entirely to the late Jean Duflo) is described by following step by step the published computer code. The model contains six macroscopic monopole terms leading asymptotically to a Liquid Drop form, three microscopic terms supposed to mock configuration mixing (multipole) corrections to the monopole shell effects, and one term in charge of detecting deformed nuclei and calculating their masses. A careful analysis of the model suggests a program of future developments that includes a complementary approach to masses based on an independently determined monopole Hamiltonian, a better description of deformations and specific suggestions for the treatment of three body forces.

Abstract:We comment on past and more recent efforts to derive a formula yielding the fine structure constant in terms of integers and transcendent numbers. We analyse these "exoteric" attitudes and describe the myths regarding {\alpha}, which seems to have very ancient roots, tracing back to Cabbala and to medieval alchemic conceptions. We discuss the obsession for this constant developed by Pauli and the cultural "environment" in which such an "obsession" grew. We also derive a simple formula for {\alpha} in terms of two numbers {\pi} and 137 only. The formula we propose reproduces the experimental values up to the last significant digit, it has not any physical motivation and is the result of an alchemic combination of numbers. We make a comparison with other existing formulae, discuss the relevant limits of validity by comparison with the experimental values and discuss a criterion to recover a physical meaning, if existing, from their mathematical properties.

Abstract:The world of mathematics is often considered abstract, with its symbols, concepts, and topics appearing unrelated to physical objects. However, it is important to recognize that the development of mathematics is fundamentally influenced by a basic fact: mathematicians and computers are physical objects subject to the laws of physics. Through an analysis of the Turing machine, it becomes evident that Turing and his contemporaries overlooked a physical possibility: information carriers can be quantum systems. As a result, computing models like the Turing machine can only process classical information, limiting their computing power. Gödel's incompleteness theorem highlights the basic fact that mathematicians and computers are made up of finite numbers of atoms and molecules. They can only start with a finite number of axioms, use a finite number of symbols and deduction rules, and arrive at theorems with a finite number of steps. While the number of proofs may be infinite after including all future mathematicians and computers, they must still be enumerable. In contrast, the number of mathematical statements is uncountable, meaning that there will always be mathematical statements that cannot be proved true or false. Just as Landauer claimed that information is physical, mathematics is also physical, limited or empowered by the physical entities that carry it out or embody it.

Abstract:The concept of mass was introduced as a mathematical abstraction and unifying principle in physics by Newton in the 17th century, and calibrated on a Solar System scale by Cavendish at the end of the 18th century. In the 19th century, this concept proved adequate to explain a vast range of physical processes on all scales from the microscopic to the Solar System. But in the 20th century, attempts to extend this range upwards to the galactic scale, and downwards to subatomic particles, have led to increasing difficulties. Modifications to the concept of mass by Einstein and Dirac have not prevented these difficulties. In this paper, I ask the question, can these difficulties be overcome by further modification of the definitions, or is the concept of mass an unavoidably local (Solar System scale) rather than global concept?
