Abstract:Significance Intense lasers can be used to drive materials into transient states far from equilibrium. Investigations of such states and processes at the atomic scale are of fundamental significance in understanding a material’s behavior under extreme conditions. Herein, an ultrafast electron diffraction technique is used to track the atomic pathway of the entire melting process of aluminum and reveal a coherent breathing motion of polyhedral clusters in transient liquid aluminum at high temperature and high pressure. The negative expansion behavior of interatomic distances in a superheated liquid state upon heating is observed. These findings provide insight into ultrafast structural transformations and transient atomic dynamics under extreme conditions.
Ultrafast Energy Transfer Process in Confined Gold Nanospheres Revealed by Femtosecond X-ray Imaging and Diffraction

Abstract:Femtosecond laser pulses drive nonequilibrium phase transitions via reaction paths hidden in thermal equilibrium. This stimulates interest to understand photoinduced ultrafast melting processes, which remains incomplete due to challenges in resolving accompanied kinetics at the relevant space-time resolution. Here, by newly establishing a multiplexing femtosecond X-ray probe, we have successfully revealed ultrafast energy transfer processes in confined Au nanospheres. Real-time images of electron density distributions with the corresponding lattice structures elucidate that the energy transfer begins with subpicosecond melting at the specimen boundary earlier than the lattice thermalization, and proceeds by forming voids. Two temperature molecular dynamics simulations uncovered the presence of both heterogeneous melting with the melting front propagation from surface and grain boundaries and homogeneous melting with random melting seeds and nanoscale voids. Supported by experimental and theoretical results, we provide a comprehensive atomic-scale picture that accounts for the ultrafast laser-induced melting and evaporation kinetics.

Abstract:The structural evolution of laser-excited systems of gold has previously been measured through ultrafast MeV electron diffraction. However, there has been a long-standing inability of atomistic simulations to provide a consistent picture of the melting process, leading to large discrepancies between the predicted threshold energy density for complete melting, as well as the transition between heterogeneous and homogeneous melting. We make use of two-temperature classical molecular dynamics simulations utilizing three highly successful interatomic potentials and reproduce electron diffraction data presented by Mo et al. [Science 360, 1451–1455 (2018)]. We recreate the experimental electron diffraction data, employing both a constant and temperature-dependent electron–ion equilibration rate. In all cases, we are able to match time-resolved electron diffraction data, and find consistency between atomistic simulations and experiments, only by allowing laser energy to be transported away from the interaction region. This additional energy-loss pathway, which scales strongly with laser fluence, we attribute to hot electrons leaving the target on a timescale commensurate with melting.

Abstract:An intense femtosecond-laser excitation of a solid induces highly nonthermal conditions. In materials like silicon, laser-induced bond-softening leads to a highly incoherent ionic motion and eventually nonthermal melting. But is this outcome an inevitable consequence, or can it be controlled? Here, we performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of crystalline silicon after timed multiple femtosecond-laser pulse excitations with fluence above the nonthermal melting threshold. Our results demonstrate an excitation mechanism that pauses nonthermal melting and creates a metastable state instead, with an electronic structure similar to the ground state. This mechanism can be generalized to other materials, potentially enabling structural and/or electronic transitions to metastable phases in the high-excitation regime. In addition, our approach could be used to switch off nonthermal contributions in experiments, allowing reliable electron-phonon coupling constants to be obtained more easily.

Abstract:In order to understand transient thermal processes in a thin aluminum foil subjected to a short high power laser pulse, molecular dynamics simulations were performed, applying the Monte Carlo method to laser irradiation. Melting and evaporation occur within the region where the laser energy was deposited. A high temperature region generated firstly at the interface by laser irradiation propagates through the substrate under the melt depth as a shock wave. In this paper, we will clarify the mechanism from a microscopic view and discuss the effect of the shock wave in a solid. The reason why the thermal shock wave propagate within a solid without damping the velocity can be explained by the existence of compressive precursor. Finally, to reconsider the validation of laser model with energy carrier, we attempted to modify laser model and compared it with original model.
Nonequilibrium Phase Change in Gold Films Induced by Ultrafast Laser Heating.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser-induced melting in a gold thin film is simulated by an integrated continuum-atomistic method with the extended Drude model for dynamic optical properties. The local order parameter of atoms is used to identify solid and liquid regions. It is shown that the film is superheated in the early nonequilibrium stage and the melted region grows very quickly with a very high rate of melting up to ∼13,300 m/s. It is also found that the continuum approach could significantly underestimate the ultrafast phase-change response, and temperature-dependent optical properties should be considered in atomic-level modeling for ultrafast laser heating.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation of a gold nanorod has been simulated by a method that couples two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. Numerical results show that the surface premelting occurs prior to the initiation of planar defect and propagates from the surface layer into the inside of nanorod. Pressure relaxation leads to high-frequency temperature oscillation and two-way transformation between fcc and disordered atoms produced by the dynamic stresses. Partial dislocation cores are initiated on the crystal surfaces due to high stresses, and then noticeable planar defects including stacking faults and twin boundaries on {111} close-packed planes are developed. Finally, only parallel twin boundaries are present in the nanorod, showing favorable agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract:Ultrafast nonthermal ablation of gold nanofilms is studied using a combined two-temperature model and molecular dynamics method. The results show that for thinner films the tensile stress is directly reversed from the initially generated compressive stress. For thicker films, on the other hand, the tensile stress wave is reflected from the irradiated surface. The key driving force for ultrafast nonthermal material ablation is conventional thermal stress, instead of the hot electron blast force.

Abstract:Light-nanomaterial interaction is accompanied by a scattering force and a heating effect. When silver nanowires are irradiated by a laser pulse with light intensity above the melting threshold, they are observed to melt into nanospheres and fly away from their original position. Simulation and experimental results show that the localized surface plasmon resonance excited by laser pulse will heat the ends and junction areas of silver nanowires, causing the occurrence of local melting at these locations. Since the local melting cannot alter the position of silver nanowire, a mathematical model was developed to evaluate the scattering force acting on silver nanowire. According to the developed mathematical model, the scattering force acting on silver nanowire mainly depends on specific surface area of silver nanowire and incident light intensity. When the light intensity of the laser pulse is ${3.0} \times {{10}^{12}}\;{\rm W}/{{\rm m}^2}$3.0×1012W/m2, the scattering force acting on the silver nanowire can reach ${{10}^5}$105 times the gravity of silver nanowire. To obtain silver nanowires networks, the light intensity of the laser pulse was manipulated to regulate the scattering force and heating effect acting on the silver nanowire. As a result, silver nanowire networks were obtained with light intensity of ${1.4} \times {{10}^{10}}\;{\rm W}/{{\rm m}^2}$1.4×1010W/m2 at a scanning speed of 1000 mm/s. This laser-induced plasmonic welding paves the way for improved understanding and control of fundamental laser-nanomaterial interactions.

Abstract:Ablation and spallation of gold thin films by an ultrashort laser pulse are simulated by using an integrated two-temperature model and molecular dynamics method with inclusion of the hot electron blast force. The simulation results show that the ultrafast laser-induced nonthermal ablation and spallation both are essentially due to dynamic tensile stress that exceeds the local material strength. It is also demonstrated that a simultaneous use of femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses could induce spallation without causing undesired front-side damage to the film. This may be suited to peel an ultrathin film (1 μm in thickness or less) from its substrate or to improve the material removal rate of precise laser processing.

Abstract:The ultrafast laser excitation of matters leads to nonequilibrium states with complex solid-liquid phase-transition dynamics. We used electron diffraction at mega-electron volt energies to visualize the ultrafast melting of gold on the atomic scale length. For energy densities approaching the irreversible melting regime, we first observed heterogeneous melting on time scales of 100 to 1000 picoseconds, transitioning to homogeneous melting that occurs catastrophically within 10 to 20 picoseconds at higher energy densities. We showed evidence for the heterogeneous coexistence of solid and liquid. We determined the ion and electron temperature evolution and found superheated conditions. Our results constrain the electron-ion coupling rate, determine the Debye temperature, and reveal the melting sensitivity to nucleation seeds.
Capturing Plateau-Rayleigh instability in silver nanowires via ultrafast electron microscopy

Abstract:Understanding the structural stability of nanomaterials such as nanowires is imperative for their practical applications. Here, using single-shot ultrafast transmission electron microscopy, we captured the Plateau-Rayleigh instability behavior of silver nanowires decomposing into silver nanoparticles upon laser irradiation on nanosecond time scales. We found that this dynamic process can be accelerated by a factor of 10 through increasing the peak laser fluence from 6.03 to 14.60 mJ/cm 2 . Moreover, by comparing the laser fluence required to initiate the Plateau-Rayleigh instability in silver nanowires on carbon and Formvar membranes, it was found that the main driving force for the Plateau-Rayleigh instability in this study was substrate heating. Finite element analysis and molecular dynamics simulations are also applied to estimate the temperature jump of the nanowires and atomistic behavior, respectively. In addition, the complex motions of silver nanowires under laser irradiation were systematically investigated by combining the results of ultrafast transmission electron microscopy with scanning electron microscopy characterizations and were determined to be related to nanowire-membrane interactions or pre-existing stresses on the nanowires, which in turn demonstrated the potential of ultrafast transmission electron microscopy for the characterization of nanomaterials and devices under extreme conditions.

Abstract:X-ray laser-induced structural changes in silicon undergoing femtosecond melting have been investigated by using an x-ray pump-x-ray probe technique. The experimental results for different initial sample temperatures reveal that the onset time and the speed of the atomic disordering are independent of the initial temperature, suggesting that equilibrium atomic motion in the initial state does not play a pivotal role in the x-ray-induced ultrafast melting. By comparing the observed time-dependence of the atomic disordering and the dedicated theoretical simulations, we interpret that the energy transfer from the excited electrons to ions via electron-ion coupling (thermal effect) as well as a strong modification of the interatomic potential due to electron excitations (non-thermal effect) trigger the ultrafast atomic disordering. Our finding of the interplay of thermal and non-thermal effects in the x-ray-induced melting demonstrates that accurate modeling of intense x-ray interactions with matter is essential to ensure a correct interpretation of experiments using intense x-ray laser pulses.

Abstract:Abstract Intense short laser pulses are an intriguing tool for tailoring surface properties via ultra-fast melting of the surface layer of an irradiated target. Despite extensive studies on the interaction of femto-second laser interaction with matter, the initial steps of the morphological changes are not yet fully understood. Here, we reveal that substantial surface structure changes occur at energy densities far below the melting threshold. By using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy we resolve atomic-scale changes, i.e. the creation of nanosized adatom and vacancy clusters. The two cluster types have distinct non-linear fluence-dependencies. A theoretical analysis reveals their creation and motion to be non-thermal in nature. The formation of these atomistic changes, individually resolved here for the first time, recast our understanding of how surfaces respond to low-intensity ultra-short laser illumination. A visualization and control of the initial morphological changes upon laser illumination are not only of fundamental interest, but pave the way for the designing material properties through surface structuring.

Abstract:Photoinduced ultrafast phenomena in materials exhibiting nonequilibrium behavior can lead to the emergence of exotic phases beyond the limits of thermodynamics, presenting opportunities for femtosecond photoexcitation. Despite extensive research, the ability to actively control quantum materials remains elusive owing to the lack of clear evidence demonstrating the explicit control of phase-changing kinetics through light-matter interactions. To address this drawback, we leveraged single-pulse time-resolved X-ray imaging of Au nanorods undergoing photoinduced melting to showcase control over the solid-to-liquid transition process through the use of localized surface plasmons. Our study uncovers transverse or longitudinal melting processes accompanied by characteristic oscillatory distortions at different laser intensities. Numerical simulations confirm that the localized surface plasmons, excited by polarized laser fields, dictate the melting modes through anharmonic lattice deformations. These results provide direct evidence of photoinduced surface plasmon-mediated ultrafast control of matter, establishing a foundation for the customization of material kinetics using femtosecond laser fields.

Abstract:X-ray structural science is undergoing a revolution driven by the emergence of X-ray Free-electron Laser (XFEL) facilities. The structures of crystalline solids can now be studied on the picosecond time scale relevant to phonons, atomic vibrations which travel at acoustic velocities. In the work presented here, X-ray diffuse scattering is employed to characterize the time dependence of the liquid phase emerging from femtosecond laser-induced melting of polycrystalline gold thin films using an XFEL. In a previous analysis of Bragg peak profiles, we showed the supersonic disappearance of the solid phase and presented a model of pumped hot electrons carrying energy from the gold surface to scatter at internal grain boundaries. This generates melt fronts propagating relatively slowly into the crystal grains. By conversion of diffuse scattering to a partial X-ray pair distribution function, we demonstrate that it has the characteristic shape obtained by Fourier transformation of the measured F(Q). The diffuse signal fraction increases with a characteristic rise-time of 13 ps, roughly independent of the incident pump fluence and consequent final liquid fraction. This suggests the role of further melt-front nucleation processes beyond grain boundaries.

Abstract:The time-resolved crystallization dynamics of as-deposited amorphous AgInSbTe thin films induced by single picosecond laser pulses has been studied. The crystallization process was shown to be a threshold-dependent multi-stage process. For the same film structure, the total crystallization time does not change significantly with different fluences in a broad fluence range. The total crystallization time can be effectively shortened by an additional thermally conductive silver underlayer. After the film has been primed with a low-fluence single similar to 30 ps laser pulse, the crystallization process can be simplified to be a monotonic process with a markedly reduced crystallization time.

Abstract:Understanding melting in metals is a hot topic of present research. This may be accomplished by pumping the system with infrared (IR) laser radiation, and probing it with hard X-rays produced by an X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). In this work we studied nanostructured polycrystalline thin films of platinum that were illuminated by IR radiation of increasing fluences. We characterized the structural response as well as the nucleation and propagation of the liquid phase as a function of time delay between the IR pump and X-ray probe. We observed partial melting of the samples for IR fluences higher than 200 mJ$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. To fit the contribution of the liquid phase to the scattering pattern in platinum we applied a model of liquid metal. The two-temperature model simulations were performed to understand the solid-state fraction of the sample heating process as a function of time delay and fluence.

Abstract:We present an atomistic-continuum model to simulate ultrashort-pulse laser melting processes in semiconductor solids on the example of silicon. The kinetics of transient nonequilibrium phase transition mechanisms is addressed with a molecular dynamics method at atomic level, whereas the laser light absorption, strong generated electron-phonon nonequilibrium, fast diffusion of and heat conduction due to photoexcited free carriers are accounted for in the continuum. We give a detailed description of the model, which is then applied to study the mechanism of short laser pulse melting of freestanding Si films. The effect of laser-induced pressure and temperature of the lattice on the melting kinetics is investigated. Two competing melting mechanisms, heterogeneous and homogeneous, were identified. Apart from the classical heterogeneous melting mechanism, the nucleation of the liquid phase homogeneously inside the material significantly contributes to the melting process. The simulations showed, that due to the open diamond structure of the crystal, the laser-generated internal compressive stresses reduce the crystal stability against the homogeneous melting. Consequently, the latter can take a massive character within several picoseconds upon the laser heating. Due to the negative volume of melting of modeled Si material, −7.5%, the material contracts upon the phase transition, relaxes the compressive stresses, and the subsequent melting proceeds heterogeneously until the excess of thermal energy is consumed. The threshold fluence value, at which homogeneous nucleation of liquid starts contributing to the classical heterogeneous propagation of the solid-liquid interface, is found from the series of simulations at different laser input fluences. For the example of Si, the laser melting kinetics of semiconductors was found to be noticeably different from that of metals with a fcc crystal structure.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser material processing has received significant attention due to a growing need for the fabrication of miniaturized devices at micro- and nanoscales. The traditional phenomenological laws, such as Fourier's law of heat conduction, are challenged in the microscale regime and a hyperbolic or dual phase lag model should be employed. During ultrafast laser interaction with metal, the electrons and lattices are not in equilibrium. Various two-temperature models that can be used to describe the nonequilibrium heat transfer are presented. A semi-classical two-step heating model to investigate thermal transport in metals caused by ultrashort laser heating is also presented. The main difference between the semiclassical and the phenomenological two-temperature models is that the former includes the effects of electron drifting, which could result in significantly different electron and lattice temperature response from the latter for higher-intensity and shorter-pulse laser heating. Under higher laser fluence and/or short pulse, the lattice temperature can exceed the melting point and melting takes place. The liquid phase will be resolidified when the lattice is cooled by conducting heat away. Ultrafast melting and resolidification of the thin gold film and microparticles were investigated. At even shorter pulse width, femtosecond laser heating on metals produces a blasting force from hot electrons in the sub-picosecond domain, which exerts on the metal lattices along with the non-equilibrium heat flow. Our work that employs the parabolic two-step heating model to study the effect of the hot-electron blast in multi-layered thin metal films is also presented.
