Abstract:We establish analytically the interactions of electromagnetic wave with a general class of spherical cloaks based on a full wave Mie scattering model. We show that for an ideal cloak the total scattering cross section is absolutely zero, but for a cloak with a specific type of loss, only the backscattering is exactly zero, which indicates the cloak can still be rendered invisible with a monostatic (transmitter and receiver in the same location) detection. Furthermore, we show that for a cloak with imperfect parameters the bistatic (transmitter and receiver in different locations) scattering performance is more sensitive to eta(t)=square root micro(t)/epsilon(t) than n(t)=square root micro(t)epsilon(t).

Abstract:Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:We examine several ways to manipulate the loss in electro-magnetic cloaks, based on transformation electromagnetics. It is found that, by utilizing inherent electric and magnetic losses of metamaterials, perfect wave absorption can be achieved based on several popular designs of electromagnetic cloaks. A practical implementation of the absorber, consisting of ten discrete layers of metamaterials, is proposed. The new devices demonstrate super-absorptivity over a moderate wideband range, suitable for both microwave and optical applications. It is corroborated that the device is functional with a subwavelength thickness and, hence, advantageous compared to the conventional absorbers.

Abstract:Recently, de Araújo et al. have erroneously interpreted a linear reflective polarization converting metasurface as an ultrathin and ultrawideband metamaterial absorber. We have shown that an incident electromagnetic wave is strongly reflected in its orthogonal polarization state. Furthermore, we discovered that the absorption rate of the absorber proposed by them was incorrectly calculated due to the overlooking of the cross-polarization reflection component.

Abstract:The approximate cloaking is investigated for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations via the approach of transformation optics. The problem is reduced to certain boundary effect estimates due to an inhomogeneous electromagnetic inclusion with an asymptotically small support but an arbitrary content enclosed by a thin high-conducting layer. Sharp estimates are established in terms of the asymptotic parameter, which are independent of the material tensors of the small electromagnetic inclusion. The result implies that the "blow-up-a-small-region" construction via the transformation optics approach yields a near-cloak for the electromagnetic waves. A novelty lies in the fact that the geometry of the cloaking construction of this work can be very general. Moreover, by incorporating the conducting layer developed in the present paper right between the cloaked region and the cloaking region, arbitrary electromagnetic contents can be nearly cloaked. Our mathematical technique extends the general one developed in [H. Y. Liu and H. Sun, J. Math. Pures Appl., 99 (2013), pp. 17-42] for nearly cloaking scalar optics. In order to investigate the approximate electromagnetic cloaking for general geometries with arbitrary cloaked contents in the present study, new techniques and analysis tools are developed for this more challenging vector optics case.
