Abstract:The effects of thermal elastic fluctuations in rubbery materials are examined. It is shown that, due to their interplay with the incompressibility constraint, these fluctuations qualitatively modify the large-deformation stress-strain relation, compared to that of classical rubber elasticity. To leading order, this mechanism provides a simple and generic explanation for the peak structure of Mooney-Rivlin stress-strain relation and shows good agreement with experiments. It also leads to the prediction of a phonon correlation function that depends on the external deformation.

Abstract:We present a unified formulation of a rotationally invariant nonlinear elasticity for a variety of spontaneously anisotropic phases, and use it to study thermal fluctuations in nematic elastomers and spontaneously anisotropic gels. We find that in a thermodynamic limit homogeneous nematic elastomers are universally incompressible, are characterized by a universal ratio of shear moduli, and exhibit an anomalous elasticity controlled by a nontrivial low-temperature fixed-point perturbative in D = 3 - epsilon dimensions. In three dimensions, we make predictions that are asymptotically exact.

Abstract:The hyperelastic behavior of unfilled natural rubber and some kinds of filled rubbers used in tire industry is tested by applying automated grid method. More accurate stress strain data of tested rubber specimens at different temperatures are obtained. Test results show that different from the unfilled natural rubber whose stiffness increases linearly with temperature rising, the filled tire rubber has a tendency first to become soft and then to become stiff through its "critical temperature." And this trend shift could be qualitatively interpreted by the joint action of two kinds of mechanisms, namely, the "energy elasticity" and the "entropy elasticity" effect. Besides, based on consideration of the relationship between model parameters and environmental temperature, the modified Arruda-Boyce model is extended to its explicit temperature-dependent form. Fitting results illustrate that this new model could take the temperature effect on hyperelastic behavior of tire rubbers into account well, and with an easy form, it is of convenient and practical usefulness in some relevant engineering application. Abstract:Abstract.We study the sliding friction for viscoelastic solids, e.g., rubber, on hard flat substrate surfaces. We consider first the fluctuating shear stress inside a viscoelastic solid which results from the thermal motion of the atoms or molecules in the solid. At the nanoscale the thermal fluctuations are very strong and give rise to stress fluctuations in the MPa-range, which is similar to the depinning stresses which typically occur at solid-rubber interfaces, indicating the crucial importance of thermal fluctuations for rubber friction on smooth surfaces. We develop a detailed model which takes into account the influence of thermal fluctuations on the depinning of small contact patches (stress domains) at the rubber-substrate interface. The theory predicts that the velocity dependence of the macroscopic shear stress has a bell-shaped form, and that the low-velocity side exhibits the same temperature dependence as the bulk viscoelastic modulus, in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Finally, we discuss the influence of small-amplitude substrate roughness on rubber sliding friction.

Abstract:The mechanical response of rubbers has been ubiquitously assumed to be only a function of the imposed strain. Using innovative X-ray measurements capturing the three-dimensional spatial volumetric strain fields, we demonstrate that rubbers and indeed many common engineering polymers, undergo significant local volume changes. But remarkably the overall specimen volume remains constant regardless of the imposed loading. This strange behaviour which also leads to apparent negative local bulk moduli is due to the presence of a mobile phase within these materials. Combining X-ray tomographic observations with high-speed radiography to track the motion of the mobile phase we have revised classical thermodynamic frameworks of rubber elasticity. The work opens new avenues to understand not only the mechanical behaviour of rubbers but a large class of widely used engineering polymers.

The Effect of Thermal Fluctuations on Schulman Area Elasticity

Abstract:We study the elastic properties of a two-dimensional fluctuating surface whose area density is allowed to deviate from its optimal (Schulman) value. The behavior of such a surface is determined by an interplay between the area-dependent elastic energy, the curvature elasticity, and the entropy. We identify three different elastic regimes depending on the ratio $A_p/A_s$ between the projected (frame) and the saturated areas. We show that thermal fluctuations modify the elastic energy of stretched surfaces ($A_p/A_s> 1$), and dominate the elastic energy of compressed surfaces ($A_p/A_s< 1$). When $A_p\sim A_s$ the elastic energy is not much affected by the fluctuations; the frame area at which the surface tension vanishes becomes smaller than $A_s$ and the area elasticity modulus increases.

Abstract:The introduction of solid polymers into a Newtonian solvent induces significant modifications in the flow behavior and heat transfer characteristics of resulting viscoelastic fluids. This study performs a comprehensive numerical investigation of thermal convection within a system comprising two concentric horizontal cylinders filled with viscoelastic fluids, with the inner cylinder rotating. The analysis encompasses all three modes of thermal convection, namely, forced, free, and mixed convection, over a range of Weissenberg numbers up to 20 and three values of the Richardson number, namely, 0, 1.429, and ∞ , representing forced, mixed, and free convection modes of heat transfer, respectively. In forced convection, the flow field remains stable, while in free and mixed convection, an increase in the Weissenberg number leads to a transition from steady to unsteady periodic, quasiperiodic, and, finally, an aperiodic and chaotic behavior. This transition arises due to the presence of elastic instability and the subsequent appearance of elastic turbulence in viscoelastic fluids with the increasing Weissenberg number. Furthermore, our findings indicate that fluid viscoelasticity has minimal influence on heat transfer rates in the cases of forced and free convection. Conversely, heat transfer rates in mixed convection decrease initially with the Weissenberg number, and then it remains almost constant on further increasing its value. We conduct a detailed analysis of the viscoelastic kinetic energy budget to elucidate this deterioration in the heat transfer rate for viscoelastic fluids. We show that this diminished heat transfer results from kinetic energy transfer from the flow structure to polymer molecules, leading to decreased bulk motion within the system and, eventually, lesser heat transfer rates. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.063303 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers realize a fascinating new form of soft matter that is a composite of a conventional crosslinked polymer gel (rubber) and a liquid crystal. These solid liquid crystal amalgams, quite similarly to their (conventional, fluid) liquid crystal counterparts, can spontaneously partially break translational and/or orientational symmetries, accompanied by novel soft Goldstone modes. As a consequence, these materials can exhibit unconventional elasticity characterized by symmetry-enforced vanishing of some elastic moduli. Thus, a proper description of such solids requires an essential modification of the classical elasticity theory. In this work, we develop a rotationally invariant, nonlinear theory of elasticity for the nematic phase of ideal liquid crystal elastomers. We show that it is characterized by soft modes, corresponding to a combination of long wavelength shear deformations of the solid network and rotations of the nematic director field. We study thermal fluctuations of these soft modes in the presence of network heterogeneities and show that they lead to a large variety of anomalous elastic properties, such as singular length-scale dependent shear elastic moduli, a divergent elastic constant for splay distortion of the nematic director, long-scale incompressibility, universal Poisson ratios and a nonlinear stress–strain relation for arbitrary small strains. These long-scale elastic properties are universal, controlled by a nontrivial zero-temperature fixed point and constitute a qualitative breakdown of the classical elasticity theory in nematic elastomers. Thus, nematic elastomers realize a stable “critical phase”, characterized by universal power-law correlations, akin to a critical point of a continuous phase transition, but extending over an entire phase.
Generic elasticity of thermal, under-constrained systems

Abstract:Athermal (i.e. zero-temperature) under-constrained systems are typically floppy, but they can be rigidified by the application of external strain, which is theoretically well understood. Here and in the companion paper, we extend this theory to finite temperatures for a very broad class of under-constrained systems. In the vicinity of the athermal transition point, we derive from first principles expressions for elastic properties such as isotropic tension $t$ and shear modulus $G$ on temperature $T$, isotropic strain $\varepsilon$, and shear strain $\gamma$, which we confirm numerically. These expressions contain only three parameters, entropic rigidity $\kappa_S$, energetic rigidity $\kappa_E$, and a parameter $b_\varepsilon$ describing the interaction between isotropic and shear strain, which can be determined from the microstructure of the system. Our results imply that in under-constrained systems, entropic and energetic rigidity interact like two springs in series. This also allows for a simple explanation of the previously numerically observed scaling relation $t\sim G\sim T^{1/2}$ at $\varepsilon=\gamma=0$. Our work unifies the physics of systems as diverse as polymer fibers & networks, membranes, and vertex models for biological tissues.

Hyperelastic Nonlinear Thermal Constitutive Equation of Vulcanized Natural Rubber

Abstract:Based on the tensor function, the nonlinear thermal constitutive equation and the corresponding strain energy function of hyperelastic isotropic materials are derived. The equation and the strain energy function are complete and irreducible, They contain 38 independent elastic constants and satisfy the tensor function representation theorem. The constitutive relation of rubber as a typical superelastic incompressible material is studied, The constitutive equation of thermal stress and the corresponding strain energy function of rubber are derived. 28 complete and irreducible elastic constants of rubber are determined. The stress-strain curves of vulcanized rubber at different temperatures (−50, −25, 0, 25, 75, 100 °C) were calculated under static uniaxial loading. The above conclusions and L.R.G. experimental data were fitted by multivariate nonlinear regression. The elastic constants of natural rubber vulcanized at 0 °C, and the specific values of thermoelastic constants. It provides important methods and data for further study of thermal sensitivity of rubber. By fitting the experimental data of vulcanized natural rubber, the constitutive equation can effectively describe the mechanical behavior of vulcanized natural rubber at different temperatures. The calculation process is simple and clear.

Abstract:We address a model for adhesive unilateral frictionless Signorini-type contact between bodies of heat-conductive viscoelastic material, in the linear Kelvin–Voigt rheology, undergoing thermal expansion. The flow rule for debonding the adhesion is considered rate-independent and unidirectional, and a thermodynamically consistent model is derived and analysed as far as the existence of a weak solution is concerned.

Abstract:A Landau theory is constructed for the vulcanization transition in cross-linked polymer systems with spontaneous nematic ordering. The neo-classical theory of the elasticity of nematic elastomers is derived via the minimization of this Landau free energy; this neo-classical theory contains the classical theory of rubber elasticity as its isotropic limit. Our work not only reveals the statistical-mechanical roots of these elasticity theories, but also demonstrates that they are applicable to a wide class of random solids. It also constitutes a starting-point for the investigation of sample-to-sample fluctuations in various forms of vulcanized matter.

Abstract:Investigations of the elastic behavior of bulk elastomers have traditionally proceeded on the basis of classical rubber elasticity, which regards chains as thermally fluctuating but disregards the thermal fluctuations of the cross-links. Here, we consider an incompressible and flat elastomer film of an axisymmetric shape confined between two large hard co-planar substrates, with the axis of the film perpendicular to the substrates. We address the impact that thermal fluctuations of the cross-links have on the free energy of elastic deformation of the system, subject to the requirement that the fluctuating elastomer cannot detach from the substrates. We examine the behavior of the deformation free energy for one case where a rigid pinning boundary condition is applied to a class of elastic fluctuations at the confining surfaces, and another case where the same elastic fluctuations are subjected to soft "gluing" potentials. We find that there can be significant departures (both quantitative and qualitative) from the prediction of classical rubber elasticity theory when elastic fluctuations are included. Finally, we compare the character of the attractive part of the elastic fluctuation-induced, or pseudo-Casimir, stress with the standard thermal Casimir stress in confined but non-elastomeric systems, finding the same power law decay behavior when a rigid pinning boundary condition is applied, for the case of the gluing potential, we find that the leading order correction to the attractive part of the fluctuation stress decays inversely with the inter-substrate separation.

The effect of temperature on the viscoelastic response of rubbery polymers at finite strains

Abstract:Constitutive equations are derived for the viscoelastic response of rubbery polymers at finite strains. A polymer is thought of as a network of long chains connected to temporary junctions. At a random time, a chain detaches from a junction, which is treated at transition from its active state to the dangling state. A dangling chain randomly captures a new junction in the vicinity of its free end and returns to its active state. Breakage and reformation of long chains are modeled as thermo-mechanically activated processes. Stress-strain relations for a rubbery polymer are developed using the laws of thermodynamics. Adjustable parameters in the model are found by fitting observations in uniaxial tensile tests for a carbon black filled rubber at various temperatures. Fair agreement is demonstrated between experimental data and results of numerical simulation.
