Abstract:A microwave-assisted liquid-phase synthesis of methyl 6-amino-5-cyano-4-aryl-2-methyl-4H-pyran-3-carboxylate was developed using functional ionic liquid as soluble support. IL-bound acetoacetate was treated with arylidenemalononitriles to give supported 4H-pyran derivatives. After cleavage, the target compounds were obtained in good yields and high purities without chromatographic purification.

Abstract:A convenient and facile method for Michael addition of methylene active compounds to chalcones has been developed by using 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene-derived task-specific ionic liquids as reaction medium in the absence of any catalyst. This protocol could afford the Michael adducts in good to excellent yields in a short time, the workup is very simple, and the ionic liquid could be reused six times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:Application of ionic liquids in organic synthesis promoted by microwave irradiation as a new green methodology has been attracting great interests. Microwave-assisted organic transformations, using ionic liquids as reaction medium or catalysts, have great advantages in accelerating reaction rate, obtaining products with high recovery yield and good selectivity, ease of work-up, as well as recycling usage of ionic liquids after simply regeneration. The paper reviews the progress of ionic liquids as microwave mediums or catalysts in the fields of organic synthesis, mainly including cyclization, nucleophilic substitution, ring closing metathesis, acylation, rearrangement, polymerization, coupling, oxidation and reduction as well as selective debromination, etc.

Abstract:Methyl 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one-5-carboxylate derivatives 7 were effectively synthesized on the soluble polymer of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000 by heating or solvent-free microwave irradiation through the Biginelli three-component cyclocondensation. Compared with the classical solution-phase Biginelli reactions, the yields could be considerably improved and the reaction time could be shortened dramatically under microwave promotion in a liquid-phase protocol. Moreover, the polymer-supported synthesis provided the target compounds in high purity.

Abstract:Hydroxyl functionalized ionic liquid 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([2-hydemim][BF4]) was prepared under microwave irradiation via methylimidazolium, chlorohydrin and sodium tetrafluoroborate as materials. A microwave-assisted solution phase parallel synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyridones was developed using hydroxyl functionalized ionic liquid (IL) as soluble support. Firstly, the [2-hydemim][BF4] was reacted with ethyl acetoacetate to obtained IL-bound acetoacetate, then this intermediate was reacted with Meldrurn acid, ammonium acetate and aromatic aldehyde. Finally 3,4-dihydropyridone derivatives were obtained in good yields and high purities without chromatographic purification after mild cleavage with sodium methoxide in methanol at room temperature, the purity of the target compounds was 95%similar to 98%, and the yield was 83%similar to 93%. The recovered functionalized ionic liquid could be recycled at least six times without losing its activity. It was clear that the solution-phase synthesis using functionalized ionic liquid as supports could be used in the combinatorial chemistry synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyridones derivatives in high efficiency.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:A microwave-assisted condensation of salicylaldehyde and aryl amines without solvent were efficiently performed to form a series of salicylaldimines in high yields, which were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and elemental analyses. The microwave-assisted condensation provided a convenient environmental-friendship methodology for syntheses of Schiff-base in organic syntheses.

Abstract:Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), considered as designers' solvents, are attracting a great attention because of their possibility to be tailored based on property requirements. The ionic liquids designed and synthesized for carrying out specified task are referred as functionalized ionic liquids, which show great application potential in various processes. The efforts to produce functionalized ionic liquids, characterize them, and evaluate their properties and applications are presented in this thesis. In chapter 1 the recent developments in ionic liquid functionalization are highlighted. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis and characterization of imidazolium salts in which a nitrile group is attached to the alkyl side chain (single-armed as well as double-armed). The nitrile group was chosen as it is a promising donor to transition metals such as palladium and platinum. The physicochemical properties of these new ionic liquids are described and it is shown how the length of the alkyl unit linking the imidazolium ring and the CN group influences the melting point of the ionic liquid. The third chapter describes palladium complexation reactions with the nitrile functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (prepared as described in Chapter 2). Their application in C-C coupling and hydrogenation reactions are described. It will be shown that the palladium complexes serve as precursors to nanoparticle catalyst reservoirs and are very efficiently stabilized by the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids. In chapter 4, the synthesis of a series of nitrile functionalized ionic liquids based on the N-butylnitrile pyridinium cation is reported and their suitability as solvents for palladium-catalyzed biphasic Suzuki and Stille coupling reactions is demonstrated. TEM images reveal that nanoparticles are formed in situ in Stille reactions and show that the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquid exert a superior nanoparticle-stabilizing effect compared to non-functionalized ionic liquids. This allows excellent catalyst lifetimes. In the fifth chapter the synthesis and characterization of a series of ionic liquids incorporating the allyl functionality and some nascent reactions that they undergo, indicating that they are useful precursors to a wide range of other functionalized ionic liquids, will be described. Chapter 6 reports on a concept of dual-functionalized ionic liquids. Specifically imidazolium cations with various functionalities are combined with the nitrile functionalized anion [CH3CH(BF3)CH2CN]-, aiming at reducing the melting point and visocity of ionic liquids. In the final chapter the ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl)-imidazolium chloride, is prepared and polymerized to form a macromolecule that is subsequently used as a transition metal nanoparticle stabilizer. A methodology that enables transition metal nanoparticle transfer between liquid phases, via surface modification of the nanoparticles by anion exchange, is described.

Abstract:1-(1-aminoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([NH(2)e-mim]Br) was microwave synthesized effectively from N-methylimidazole and 2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide. The yield was 81%. 1-(1-aminoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [NH(2)e-mim]PF(6) was obtained by anionic exchange with ammonium hexafluorophosphate. The yield of product was 70%. The structure of products were determined by IR, HNMR. The experimental results show that CO(2) can be absorbed by [NH(2)e-mim]PF(6) better than [bmim]PF(6).
