Abstract:Transition-metal(TM)-based Prussian blue and its analogues(TM-PBAs) have attracted considerable attention as cathode materials owing to their versatile ion storage capability with tunable working voltages. TM-PBAs with different crystal structures, morphologies, and TM combinations can exhibit excellent electrochemical properties because of their unique and robust host frameworks with well-defined<100> ionic diffusion channels. Nonetheless, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the performance dependence of TM-PBAs on structural changes during charging/discharging processes. In this study, in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure analyses elucidate the TMdependent structural changes in a series of TM-PBAs during the charging and discharging processes.During the discharging process, the lattice volume of Fe-PBA increased while those of Ni-and Cu-PBAs decreased. This discrepancy is attributed to the extent of size reduction of the cyanometallate complex([Fe(CN) 6 ]) via pi-backbonding from Fe to C due to redox flips of the low-spin Fe 3+/2+ ion. This study presents a comprehensive understanding of how TM selection affects capacity acquisition and phase transition in TM-PBAs, a promising class of cathode materials.
Ultralight Mesoporous Magnetic Frameworks by Interfacial Assembly of Prussian Blue Nanocubes.

Abstract:A facile approach for the synthesis of ultralight iron oxide hierarchical structures with tailorable macro- and mesoporosity is reported. This method entails the growth of porous Prussian blue (PB) single crystals on the surface of a polyurethane sponge, followed by in situ thermal conversion of PB crystals into three-dimensional mesoporous iron oxide (3DMI) architectures. Compared to previously reported ultralight materials, the 3DMI architectures possess hierarchical macro- and mesoporous frameworks with multiple advantageous features, including high surface area (ca. 117 m(2) g(-1)) and ultralow density (6-11 mg cm(-3)). Furthermore, they can be synthesized on a kilogram scale. More importantly, these 3DMI structures exhibit superparamagnetism and tunable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, thus allowing for efficient multiphase interfacial adsorption and fast multiphase catalysis.

Abstract:Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs) with unusual properties such as spin crossover (SCO) and metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) are of great interest. However, the construction of new three-dimensional (3D) PBAs is a formidable challenge. Herein, two mixed-valence 3D PBAs, {[CoII(TPA)]3[FeIII(CN)6][CoIII(CN)6]}3DMF·7H2O (1·S) and {[CoII(TPA)]3[FeIII(CN)6][CoIII(CN)6]}2DMF·1H2O (2·S) (TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were synthesized by a solvothermal method. Complexes 1 and 2 are architectural isomers with different crystal structures, electronic absorption spectra, and magnetic properties, one of which (1·S) showed reversible thermochromism accompanied by metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET). Compound 1·S crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 17.2227(8), b = 23.1538(10), c = 22.5074(12) Å, β = 90.388(5)°, V = 8975.17(7) Å3, and Z = 4. Compound 2·S crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/nnc with a = b = 33.1374(5), c = 31.7381(10) Å, V = 34851.2(15) Å3, and Z = 16. In both isomers, the 3D structures are constructed with heptanuclear heterometallic units, {[CoII(TPA)]6[FeIII(CN)6]}9+, which are interconnected by [Fe(CN)6]3– and [Co(CN)6]3– anions in the trans μ-bridge mode. This work may provide a new perspective for the design of functional PBAs materials.

Abstract:Na-rich prussian blue analogues (PBs) with high coulombic efficiency are of fundamental and technological importance for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Here we report high-quality NaxFeFe(CN)6 nanocubes as cathode materials for SIBs and investigate their sodium storage mechanism. Among them, Na-rich Na1.70FeFe(CN)6 shows highly reversible electrochemical reactions, delivering a capacity as high as 120.7mAhg−1 at a current density of 200mAg−1; even at 1200mAg−1, the capacity still retains up to 73.6mAhg−1. The first-cycle coulombic efficiency strongly depends on the sodium content in NaxFeFe(CN)6. Experimental results and first-principle calculations demonstrate that sodium cations in the large cavities of PBs have a priority to occupy the 8c site, while in the Na-rich samples, Na+ ions can be pushed into other 24d site. We believe that our findings can provide new insights into sodium storage mechanism for the PBs.

Abstract:We report a conceptually new method for the synthesis of Prussian blue (PB) nanoshells with tunable size using miniemulsion periphery polymerization (MEPP). The process of MEPP involves the preparation of miniemulsion droplets using organometallic surfactants, followed by a coordination polymerization at the periphery of the droplets. The organometallic polymers with nanoshell structure were confirmed by using FT-IR, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, and AFM. WAXD measurements indicated that the shell structure suppressed the crystallization of the polymers. We also discovered that the nanoshell structure can significantly enhance the thermal stability of the materials. The hollow structures plus inherent magnetic properties of PB render the materials potential useful as multifunctional capsules.

Abstract:Magnetic order in the thermally quenched photomagnetic Prussian blue analogue coordination polymer K0.27Co[Fe(CN)6]0.73[D2O6]0.27 1.42D2O has been studied down to 4 K with unpolarized and polarized neutron powder diffraction as a function of applied magnetic field. Analysis of the data allows the onsite coherent magnetization of the Co and Fe spins to be established. Specifically, magnetic fields of 1 T and 4 T induce moments parallel to the applied field, and the sample behaves as a ferromagnet with a wandering axis.

Abstract:Thermally induced CoII(HS)FeIII ⋅ CoIII(LS)FeII electron transfer was probed using far‐infrared spectroscopy in CoFe Prussian blue analogs. The results revealed (i) a spectral signature of local interactions between the cyanide‐bridged CoFe bimetallic network and interstitial alkali cations and (ii) interlinked electronic and structural phenomena involved in the switching properties. A series of Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs) having the chemical formula KxCsyCo4[Fe(CN)6](8+x+y)/3⋅nH2O was investigated by variable temperature far‐infrared spectroscopy. The compounds with the lowest amounts of interstitial alkali cations exhibit the thermally activated CoII(High Spin)FeIII ⋅ CoIII(Low Spin)FeII electron transfer, whereas above a threshold of two alkali cations per unit cell the compounds are in the CoIII(Low Spin)FeII electronic state at room temperature and remain in this electronic state over the 300–15 K temperature range. Our variable temperature study shows that FIR spectroscopy turns out to be particularly well‐suited to probe local interactions between the alkali cations in interstitial sites of PBAs and the surrounding cyanide‐bridged bimetallic network as well as to disentangle electronic and structural phenomena involved in the switching properties.

Heterogeneous composites with coexisting spin-crossover and long-range magnetic ordering

Abstract:A facile precipitation transformation method at room temperature was employed to efficiently prepare the FeTrz@PB heterostructural composites containing both [Fe(Htrz)(2)(trz)](BF4) (Htrz=1H-1,2,4-triazole) and Prussian blue KFeIII[Fe-II(CN)(6)] with the coexistence of spin crossover (SCO) and long-range magnetic ordering (LRMO). The controllable growth process of these heterostructural composites was fully characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersion X-ray analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic studies. The size of the PB particles and the appearance of FeTrz@PB can be tuned by controlling the reaction time. Increasing the reaction time leads to the increased ratio of the PB phase in the FeTrz@PB composites. Remarkably, magnetic studies on FeTrz@PB revealed the coexistence of SCO above room temperature (362-392 K) and LRMO at low temperatures (ca. 5.6 K). The high spin (HS) fraction and ZFC/FC intensity gradually increased with the growth time, while the heights of the hysteresis loops decreased gradually.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs, A2T[M(CN)6], A = Li, K, Na; T = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, etc.; M = Fe, Mn, Co, etc.) are a large family of materials with an open framework structure. In recent years, they have been intensively investigated as active materials in the field of energy conversion and storage, such as for alkaline‐ion batteries (lithium‐ion, LIBs; sodium‐ion, NIB; and potassium‐ion, KIBs), and as electrochemical catalysts. Nevertheless, few review papers have focused on the intrinsic chemical and structural properties of Prussian blue (PB) and its analogues. In this Review, a comprehensive insight into the PBAs in terms of their structural and chemical properties, and the effects of these properties on their materials synthesis and corresponding performance is provided.

Confined Element Distribution with Structure‐driven Energy Coupling for Enhanced Prussian Blue Analogue Cathode

Abstract:The structural failure of Na2Mn[Fe(CN)6] could not be alleviated with traditional modification strategies through the adjustable composition property of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), considering that the accumulation and release of stress derived from the MnN6 octahedrons are unilaterally restrained. Herein, a novel application of adjustable composition property, through constructing a coordination competition relationship between chelators and [Fe(CN)6]4− to directionally tune the enrichment of elements, is proposed to restrain structural degradation and induce unconventional energy coupling phenomenon. The non‐uniform distribution of elements at the M1 site of PBAs (NFM‐PB) is manipulated by the sequentially precipitated Ni, Fe, and Mn according to the Irving‐William order. Electrochemically active Fe is operated to accompany Mn, and zero‐strain Ni is modulated to enrich at the surface, synergistically mitigating with the enrichment and release of stress and then significantly improving the structural stability. Furthermore, unconventional energy coupling effect, a fusion of the electrochemical behavior between FeLS and MnHS, is triggered by the confined element distribution, leading to the enhanced electrochemical stability and anti‐polarization ability. Consequently, the NFM‐PB demonstrates superior rate performance and cycling stability. These findings further exploit potentialities of the adjustable composition property and provide new insights into the component design engineering for advanced PBAs.

Abstract:Metal hexacyanometallates, or Prussian blue analogs (PBAs), are active materials in important electrochemical technologies, including next-generation sodium- and potassium-ion batteries. They have tunable properties, including reduction potential, ionic conductivity, and color. However, little is known about their electronic conductivities. In this work, we use density-functional theory to model the electronic structure and to explore the likely electron-conduction mechanism in three promising cathodes (manganese, iron, and cobalt hexacyanoferrate) in each of three oxidation states. First, we demonstrate that hybrid functionals reliably reproduce experimentally observed spin configurations and geometric phase changes. We confirm these materials are semiconductors or insulators with band gaps ranging from 1.90 eV up to 4.94 eV. We further identify that for most of the compounds, the electronic band edges originate from carbon-coordinated iron orbitals, suggesting that doping at the carbon-coordinated site may strongly affect carrier conductivity. Finally, we calculate charge-carrier effective masses, which we find are very heavy. Abstract:The magnetic and magnetodielectric (MD) properties of nanobased Bi2Fe4O9 are investigated. 2 mu m x 2 mu m x 300 nm nano-crystals exhibit an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transition at 235 K and a weak ferromagnetism in the temperature range of 10-310K, shown by the magnetic hysteresis loops. The samples show a large MD effect with Delta epsilon/epsilon being about -13% at 50K and 0.45 T, as well as an anomaly of MD effect that increases with increasing magnetic field (H). This large MD effect indicates a strong coupling between the magnetic and dielectric properties in Bi2Fe4O9. Our studies provide strong evidence that both the AFM ordering and ferromagnetism contribute to the MD effects.

Abstract:Scanning tip near-field microwave microscope (STMNM) was employed to obtain the nanoscale dielectric constant profile of Pb ( Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2) O 3 (PFN) single crystal. The observed pseudo-periodic profiles of the dielectric constant indicate the existence of ferroelectric domains. The low dielectric constant area is supposed to have some relation with the antiferromagnetic property of PFN and the appearance of magnetic hysteresis below the Néel temperature implies the formation of magnetic order. The Mössbauer spectra show that the iron ions are in trivalence high spin state. The appearance of the sextet confirms the magnetic order existed in PFN under its Néel temperature.

Abstract:The magnetic anisotropy of thin (∼200 nm) and thick (∼2 μm) films and of polycrystalline (diameters ∼60 nm) powders of the Prussian blue analogue Rb0.7Ni4.0[Cr(CN)6]2.9⋅nH2O, a ferromagnetic material with Tc∼70 K, have been investigated by magnetization, ESR at 50 and 116 GHz, and variable-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD). The origin of the anisotropic magnetic response cannot be attributed to the direct influence of the solid support but the film growth protocol that preserves an organized two-dimensional film is important. In addition, the anisotropy does not arise from an anisotropic g tensor nor from magnetolattice variations above and below Tc. By considering effects due to magnetic domains and demagnetization factors, the analysis provides reasonable descriptions of the low- and high-field data, thereby identifying the origin of the magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract:This paper summarizes 0 GPa to 0.6 GPa neutron diffraction measurements of a nickel hexacyanochromate coordination polymer (NiCrPB) that has the face-centered cubic, Prussian blue structure. Deuterated powders of NiCrPB contain ~100 nm sided cubic particles. The application of a large magnetic field shows the ambient pressure, saturated magnetic structure. Pressures of less than 1 GPa have previously been shown to decrease the magnetic susceptibility by as much as half, and we find modifications to the nuclear crystal structure at these pressures that we quantify. Bridging cyanide molecules isomerize their coordination direction under pressure to change the local ligand field and introduce inhomogeneities in the local (magnetic) anisotropy that act as pinning sites for magnetic domains, thereby reducing the low field magnetic susceptibility.

Abstract:We investigated the nanoscale structure and magnetic properties of Nd-2(FeNb)(14)(BC)/alpha-Fe. We studied several alloy compositions and the effect of C and Nb on the properties, and thus produced a new alloy of Nd9Fe85.5Nb1.0B4C0.5. Its mean grain size, is about 40 nm. Grain refinement enhanced the remanence, because of greater ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic phase grains. Annealing improved the properties further. By optimizing the processing conditions, we obtained relatively,high performance [J(r) = 1.099 T, H-ci = 518.3 kA/m, J(r)/J(s) = 0.82, (BH)(max) = 137.8 kj/m(3)] when the alloy was annealed at 700 degreesC for 15 min. We examined the magnetic domain structure in the nanophase alloy by magnetic force microscopy. The length of the magnetic contrast in the alloy is in the range of 450-550 nm, much bigger than the mean grain size. Here, we interpret the length in terms of interaction domains, which originate from the exchange coupling effect.

Abstract:In this research, FePt nanocubes, octapods and polyhedra were successfully prepared with Mo(Co)6 as a reducing agent. The chemically-synthesized cubic FePt nanoparticles could easily be self-assembled into an oriented nanoarray. These ordered nanomagnet arrays were expected to achieve high-density information storage and high performance in permanent magnets. The self-assembed FePt nanocubes were chemically disordered with a face centered cubic (fcc) structure. During annealing, these particles changed to a face-centered tetragonal (fct) order. The phase structure, the micro-morphology and magnetic properties were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM).

Abstract:Prussian blue (PB) represents a class of metal-organic coordinated compounds with fascinating electrochromic properties. Although the electronic structure has been studied intensively, its electrochromic mechanism remains unresolved due to the lack of electronic-transition analysis. Herein, we investigate the electrochromism of Prussian blue (PB) and its derivatives by combining optical characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We unambiguously determine the optical gaps of PB-related derivatives and construct a smart window exhibiting excellent electrochromic performance and temperature control. DFT calculations demonstrate that the coloring of Prussian yellow (PY) is critically governed by two absorption bands centered at ca. 2.4 eV and 3.0 eV respectively. The former is weak and is generated by the charge-transfer transitions from the Fe(I)-t2g (Fe ions connected with C) band to the Fe(II)-t2g (Fe ions connected with N) band. The latter is strong and is induced by the electronic excitations from the Fe(I)-t2g band to the antibonding Fe(II)-eg band. The color change from yellow to blue is induced by the reduction of Fe(I) ions, which redshifts and enhances the former transitions but suppresses the latter transitions. In contrast, the color change from blue to transparency (Prussian white) is induced by the reduction of Fe(II) ions, which enlarges the bandgap and permits transmittance of visible light. The band-edge transition oscillator strengths are critically governed by the state weight of C-p, which provides opportunities for optical modulation via anionic doping. The insights obtained in this work are fundamental for understanding and controlling the opto-electronic properties of PB-related compounds for intelligent applications.
