Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of central importance in the atmosphere because of their close relation to air quality and climate change. As a significant sink for VOCs, the fate of VOCs via heterogeneous reactions may explain the big gap between field and model studies. These reactions play as yet unclear but potentially crucial role in atmospheric processes. In order to better evaluate this reaction pathway, we present the first specific review for the progress of heterogeneous reaction studies on VOCs, including carbonyl compounds, organic acids, alcohols, and so on. Our review focuses on the processes for heterogeneous reactions of VOCs under varying experimental conditions, as well as their implications for trace gas and HOx budget, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, physicochemical properties of aerosols, and human health. Finally, we propose the future direction for laboratory studies of heterogeneous chemistry of VOCs that should be carried out under more atmospherically relevant conditions, with a special emphasis on the effects of relative humidity and illumination, the multicomponent reaction systems, and reactivity of aged and authentic particles. In particular, more reliable uptake coefficients, based on the abundant elaborate laboratory studies, appropriate calibration, and logical choice criterion, are urgently required in atmospheric models.

Abstract:presented. Laser-based methods have been applied for the specific generation and time- resolved detection of the above transient species in systematic studies. Photolytic radical generation in solution, radical phase transfer, radical interconversion reactions and the influence of organic compounds on the chemistry within the aqueous tropospheric phase will be discussed. Results indicate that solution reactions of the above radicals may significantly influence the net effects of chemistry within droplets and aerosols dispersed in air. A multiphase box model coupling an advanced aqueous phase mechanism (CAPRAM 2.4) to RADM2/RACM is applied to quantify effects of multiphase conversions. It will be discussed how aqueous phase processes alter the oxidation capacity of the tropospheric gas phase by uptake and release of trace gases and radicals. Current restrictions of models will be outlined.

For each of the three radicals their generation and their properties are discussed first in the corresponding sections. The main focus herein is to summarize newly published aqueous-phase kinetic data on OH, NO3 and SO4- radical reactions relevant for the description of multiphase tropospheric chemistry. The data compilation builds up on earlier datasets published in the literature. Since the last review in 2003 (H. Herrmann, Chem. Rev. 2003, 103, 4691-4716) more than hundred new rate constants are available from literature. In case of larger discrepancies between novel and already published rate constants the available kinetic data for these reactions are discussed and recommendations are provided when possible. As many OH kinetic data are obtained by means of the thiocyanate (SCN-) system in competition kinetic measurements of OH radical reactions this system is re-viewed in a subchapter of this review. Available rate constants for the reaction sequence following the reaction of OH + SCN- are summarized. Newly published data since 2003 have been considered and averaged rate constants are calculated. Applying competition kinetics measurements usually the formation of the radical anion (SCN)(2)(-) is monitored directly by absorption measurements. Within this subchapter available absorption spectra of the (SCN)(2)(-) radical anion from the last five decades are presented. Based on these spectra an averaged (SCN)(2)(-) spectrum was calculated. In the last years different estimation methods for aqueous phase kinetic data of radical reactions have been developed and published. Such methods are often essential to estimate kinetic data which are not accessible from the literature. Approaches for rate constant prediction include empirical correlations as well as structure activity relationships (SAR) either with or without the usage of quantum chemical descriptors. Abstract:In the present work model simulations with a box model applying typical tropospheric initial conditions for three different scenarios (marine, rural and urban conditions) are performed to model tropospheric chemistry in both the gas and the aqueous phase. The gas phase chemistry is described by RADM2 [1]. For the aqueous phase chemistry a detailed aqueous phase mechanism (CAPRAM, chemical aqueous phase radical mechanism) was developed. This mechanism is more extensive than other existing mechanisms, because the oxidation of organic compounds with one and two carbon atoms, an explicit description of radical or iron(III) initiated S(IV)-oxidation, the reactions of radicals and radical anions ·OH, NO3·,·Cl2−,·Br2−, and CO3−·, and the chemistry of the dissolved transition metal ions (TMI) iron, manganese and copper is treated in detail.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosols facilitate reactions between ambient gases and dissolved species. Here, we review our efforts to interrogate the uptake of these gases and the mechanisms of their reactions both theoretically and experimentally. We highlight the fascinating behavior of N 2 O 5 in solutions ranging from pure water to complex mixtures, chosen because its aerosol-mediated reactions significantly impact global ozone, hydroxyl, and methane concentrations. As a hydrophobic, weakly soluble, and highly reactive species, N 2 O 5 is a sensitive probe of the chemical and physical properties of aerosol interfaces. We employ contemporary theory to disentangle the fate of N 2 O 5 as it approaches pure and salty water, starting with adsorption and ending with hydrolysis to HNO 3 , chlorination to ClNO 2 , or evaporation. Flow reactor and gas-liquid scattering experiments probe even greater complexity as added ions, organic molecules, and surfactants alter the interfacial composition and reaction rates. Abstract:Criegee intermediates in the atmosphere serve as oxidizing agents to initiate aerosol formation, which are particularly important for atmospheric modeling, and understanding their kinetics is one of the current outstanding challenges in climate change modeling. Because experimental kinetics are still limited, we must rely on theory for the complete picture, but obtaining absolute rates from theory is a formidable task. Here, we report the bimolecular reaction kinetics of carbonyl oxide with ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, formaldehyde, and water dimer by designing a triple-level strategy that combines (i) benchmark results close to the complete-basis limit of coupled-cluster theory with the single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations (CCSDTQ/CBS), (ii) a new hybrid meta density functional (M06CR) specifically optimized for reactions of Criegee intermediates, and (iii) variational transition-state theory with both variable rection coordinates and optimized reaction paths, with multidimensional tunneling, and with pressure effects. For (i) we have found that quadruple excitations are required to obtain quantitative reaction barriers, and we designed new composite methods and strategies to reach CCSDTQ/CBS accuracy. Quantitative Kinetics of HO2 Reactions with Aldehydes in the Atmosphere: High-Order Dynamic Correlation, Anharmonicity, and Falloff Effects Are All Important

Abstract:Kinetics provides the fundamental parameters for elucidating sources and sinks of key atmospheric species and for atmospheric modeling more generally. Obtaining quantitative kinetics in the laboratory for the full range of atmospheric temperatures and pressures is quite difficult. Here, we use computational chemistry to obtain quantitative rate constants for the reactions of HO2 with HCHO, CH3CHO, and CF3CHO. First, we calculate the high-pressure-limit rate constants by using a dual-level strategy that combines conventional transition state theory using a high level of electronic structure wave function theory with canonical variational transition state theory including small-curvature tunneling using density functional theory. The wave-function level is beyond-CCSD(T) for HCHO and CCSD(T)-F12a (Level-A) for XCHO (X = CH3, CF3), and the density functional (Level-B) is specifically validated for these reactions. Then, we calculate the pressure-dependent rate constants by using system-specific quantum RRK theory (SS-QRRK) and also by an energy-grained master equation. The two treatments of the pressure dependence agree well. We find that the Level-A//Level-B method gives good agreement with CCSDTQ(P)/CBS. We also find that anharmonicity is an important factor that increases the rate constants of all three reactions. We find that the HO2 + HCHO reaction has a significant dependence on pressure, but the HO2 + CF3CHO reaction is almost independent of pressure. Our findings show that the HO2 + HCHO reaction makes important contribution to the sink for HCHO, and the HO2 + CF3CHO reaction is the dominant sink for CF3CHO in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Methoxyphenols, which are emitted through biomass burning, are an important species in atmospheric chemistry. In the present study, temperature-dependent aqueous-phase OH radical reactions of six methoxyphenols and two related phenols have been investigated through laser flash photolysis and the density functional theory. The rate constants obtained were in a range of (1.1-1.9) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 with k(3-MC) > k(Cre) ≈ k(Syr) ≈ k(MEP) > k(Res) > k(3-MP) > k(2-EP) ≈ k(2-MP). We derived the parameters of these reactions from the obtained T-dependent rate constants and found a mean Arrhenius activation energy of 16.9 kJ mol-1. The diffusion rate constants were calculated for each case and compared to the measured ones. Generally, the rate constants are found to be close to fully diffusion-controlled (kdiff = (1.4-1.5) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 for all reactions). A structure-function relationship was established through the measurement result, which could be used for predicting unknown rate constants of other phenolic compounds. All of these findings are expected to enhance the predictive capabilities of models, such as the chemical aqueous-phase radical mechanism.
Kinetics of oligomer-forming reactions involving the major functional groups present in atmospheric secondary organic aerosol particles

Abstract:Atmospheric organic aerosol particles impact climate as well as human and environmental health. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA), which is formed by the gas-to-particle partitioning of products of the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from biogenic or anthropogenic sources, contributes a large fraction of this material. In the particle phase, these products can undergo accretion reactions to form oligomers that impact the formation, composition, and chemical-physical properties of aerosols. While these reactions are known to occur in the atmosphere, data and models describing their kinetics and equilibria are sparse. Here, reactions of compounds containing potentially reactive hydroperoxide, hydroxyl, carboxyl, aldehyde, and ketone groups were investigated in single and phase-separated organic/aqueous mixtures in the absence and presence of a sulfuric acid catalyst. Compounds containing these groups and a nonreactive UV-absorbing nitrate group were synthesized and their reactions and products were monitored and characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Reactions were observed between hydroperoxides and aldehydes to form peroxyhemiacetals, and between carboxylic acids and alcohols to form esters, and their rate and equilibrium constants were determined. No reactions were observed in other mixtures, indicating that under the conditions of these experiments only a few reaction pathways form oligomers. Reactions were also conducted with probe compounds and SOA formed in an environmental chamber reaction of α-pinene with O3. Whereas in a previous study we observed a rapid hydroperoxide reaction in this SOA, among the other compounds studied here only alcohols reacted. These results provide insight into the types of accretion reactions that are likely to occur in atmospheric aerosols, and the rate and equilibrium constants can be used to better model SOA chemistry.

Abstract:Chlorine plays an important role in tropospheric oxidation processes, in both marine and continental environments. Although modeling studies have explored the importance of halogen chemistry, uncertainty remains in associated chemical mechanisms and fundamental kinetics parameters. Prior kinetics measurements of multiphase halogen recycling reactions have been largely performed with dilute, bulk solutions, leaving unexplored more realistic chemical systems which have high solute concentrations and are internally mixed with both halide and organic components. Here, we address the multiphase kinetics of gaseous HOCl using an aerosol flow tube and aerosol mass spectrometer to study its reactions with particulate chloride, using atmospherically relevant particle acidity, solute concentrations, and ionic strength. We also investigate the chemistry that results when biomass burning (BB) aerosol components and chloride are internally mixed. Using pH-buffered deliquesced particles, we show that the rate constant for reaction of dissolved HOCl with H+ and Cl- at high relative humidity (RH) (80-85%) is within a factor of two of the literature value for bulk phase conditions. However, at lower RH values (60-70%) where the particles are considerably more concentrated, the rate constant for chloride loss from the particles is an order of magnitude higher. For pure organic compounds commonly found in biomass burning (BB) aerosol, such as coniferaldehyde, salicylic acid and furfural, an increase in the aerosol chlorine content occurs with HOCl exposure, indicating the formation of organochlorine species. Together, these independent findings explain results for internally mixed aerosol particles with both chloride and BB components present where we observed behavior consistent with both chloride loss and organochlorine formation occurring simultaneously upon HOCl exposure. Our results indicate that chlorine recycling via HOCl uptake by chloride-containing particles will occur in the atmosphere efficiently over a wide range of RH conditions, even when reactive organic compounds are present in the same particles as chloride. Simultaneously, formation of organochlorine compounds, which are commonly toxic, is likely occurring when reactive organic components are present. This study describes laboratory experiments on the reaction HOCl with chloride-containing aerosol and aerosol containing selected organic compounds with and without chloride.
