Abstract:The kinetics of the oxidation of functionalized organic compounds of atmospheric relevance by the hydroxyl radical (OH) was measured in the aqueous phase. Competition kinetics, using the thiocyanate anion (SCN-) as competitor, was applied using both a laser flash photolysis long path absorption (LP-LPA) setup and a Teflon AF waveguide photolysis (WID) system. Both experiments were intercompared and validated by measuring the rate coefficients for the reaction between OH and acetone where values of k(1) = (1.8 +/- 0.4) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1) were obtained with the WP system, which agrees very well with the rate constant of k(1) = (2.1 +/- 0.6) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1) determined before by LP-LPLA [1]. Equations were derived from the regression line of the Evans-Polanyi plot in the form activation energy (Ea) versus bond dissociation energy (BIDE) and from the regression line for the region 380 <= BDE <= 412 kJ mol(-1) of the Evans-Polanyi plot in the form log k(H) versus BDE. Both equations can be used as a tool for predicting unknown rate coefficients and activation energy for the reactions of OH with different organics in the aqueous phase. Abstract:Methoxyphenols, which are emitted through biomass burning, are an important species in atmospheric chemistry. In the present study, temperature-dependent aqueous-phase OH radical reactions of six methoxyphenols and two related phenols have been investigated through laser flash photolysis and the density functional theory. The rate constants obtained were in a range of (1.1-1.9) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 with k(3-MC) > k(Cre) ≈ k(Syr) ≈ k(MEP) > k(Res) > k(3-MP) > k(2-EP) ≈ k(2-MP). We derived the parameters of these reactions from the obtained T-dependent rate constants and found a mean Arrhenius activation energy of 16.9 kJ mol-1. The diffusion rate constants were calculated for each case and compared to the measured ones. Generally, the rate constants are found to be close to fully diffusion-controlled (kdiff = (1.4-1.5) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 for all reactions). A structure-function relationship was established through the measurement result, which could be used for predicting unknown rate constants of other phenolic compounds. All of these findings are expected to enhance the predictive capabilities of models, such as the chemical aqueous-phase radical mechanism.

Abstract:The OH radical plays an important role in tropospheric chemistry. The OH radical is a very strong oxidant and its reactivity contributes to the atmospheric degradation of volatile organic compounds in aqueous solution. Abstract:The radical-radical reaction between OH and HO2 has been considered for a long time as an important reaction in tropospheric photochemistry and combustion chemistry. However, a significant discrepancy of an order of magnitude for rate coefficients of this reaction is found between two recent experiments. Herein, we investigate the reaction OH + HO2 via direct spectral quantification of both the precursor (H2O2) and free radicals (OH and HO2) upon the 248 nm photolysis of H2O2 using infrared two-color time-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy. With quantitative and kinetic analysis of concentration profiles of both OH and HO2 at varied conditions, the rate coefficient kOH+HO2 is determined to be (1.10 ± 0.12) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 296 K. Moreover, we explore the kinetics of this reaction under conditions in the presence of water, but no enhancement in the kOH+HO2 can be observed. This work as an independent experiment plays a crucial role in revisiting this prototypical radical-radical reaction.
Temperature-Dependent Rate Constants for Hydroxyl Radical Reactions with Organic Compounds in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:The OH radical is the most important oxidant in both the tropospheric gas and aqueous phase. Its main sink processes in clouds appear to be reactions with organics but due to the lack of appropriate kinetic data current cloud chemistry models consider only reactions with C-1 and C-2 compounds. Therefore, in this study temperature dependent rate constants for the reactions of the OH radical with organic compounds (greater than or equal toC(2)) were determined. These investigations were performed by competition kinetics ( reference substance: SCN-). Initially the experimental system was checked reinvestigating kinetic data for OH reactions with formate (R-1) and tert-butanol (R-2) available from literature. Abstract:Free radical reactions are an important degradation process for organic compounds within the aqueous atmospheric environment. Nevertheless, non-radical oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide and ozone also contribute to the degradation and conversion of these substances (Tilgner and Herrmann, 2010). In this work, kinetic investigations of non-radical reactions were conducted using UV / Vis spectroscopy (dual-beam spectrophotometer and stopped flow technique) and a capillary electrophoresis system applying pseudo-first order kinetics to reactions of glyoxal, methylglyoxal, glycolaldehyde, glyoxylic, pyruvic and glycolic acid as well as methacrolein (MACR) and methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) with H2O2 and ozone at 298 K. The measurements indicate rather small rate constants at room temperature of k2nd < 3 M−1 s−1 (except for the unsaturated compounds exposed to ozone). Compared to radical reaction rate constants the values are about 10 orders of magnitude smaller (kOH&bullet; ~109 M−1 s−1). However, when considering the much larger non-radical oxidant concentrations compared to radical concentrations in urban cloud droplets, calculated first-order conversion rate constants change the picture towards H2O2 reactions becoming more important, especially when compared to the nitrate radical. For some reactions mechanistic suggestions are also given.
Laboratory Kinetic and Mechanistic Studies on the OH-initiated Oxidation of Acetone in Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:The OH-initiated oxidation of acetone in aqueous solution is investigated because of its potential implications in atmospheric chemistry. The UV-spectrum of the transient acetonylperoxy radical was measured. Two characteristic absorption bands of the acetonylperoxy radical spectrum are found in the 220-400 nm wavelength region. The rate constant for the recombination reaction of the acetonylperoxy radical was determined as a function of temperature for the first time in aqueous solution with K-rec,K-298 K = (7.3 +/- 1.3) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1), E-A = 4.5 +/- 3.3 kJ mol(-1), and A = (4.7 +/- 2.7) x 10(9) M-1 s(-1). Furthermore, kinetic investigations of the OH-initiated oxidation of methylglyoxal and pyruvic acid were performed with the following results: for methylglyoxal, k(second) = (6.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1), E-A = 12 +/- 2 kJ mol(-1), and A = (7.8 +/- 0.2) x 10(9) M-1 s(-1); for pyruvic acid (pH = 0), k(second) = (3.2 +/- 0.6) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1), E-A = 15 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1), and A = (1.1 +/- 0.1) x 10(11) M-1 s(-1); for pyruvate (pH = 6), k(second) = (7.1 +/- 2.4) x 10(8) M-1 s(-1), E-A = 25 +/- 19 kJ mol(-1), and A = (1.5 +/- 0.4) x 10(13) M-1 s(-1). Quantitative product studies were done as a function of the number of laser photolysis pulses for acetone and its oxidation products methylglyoxal, hydroxyacetone, pyruvic acid, acetic acid, and oxalic acid. After the recombination reaction of acetonylperoxy radicals, there are two possible decomposition reactions where the primary products methylglyoxal and hydroxyacetone are formed. From product analysis after a single photolysis laser shot, the ratio of the main product-forming reactions was determined as (A) 30% and (B) 56% for the methylglyoxal formation via channel A to yield two molecules of methylglyoxal and channel B to yield one molecule of methylglyoxal and one molecule of hydroxyacetone. The remaining product can be ascribed to channel C, the radical-retaining channel forming alkoxy radicals with a yield of 14%. Pyruvic acid and acetic acid were found to be the major intermediates estimated with concentrations in the same order of magnitude and a similar time profile, indicating that acetic acid is also a possible oxidation product of methylglyoxal.

Abstract:The absorption spectra and the kinetics of the self-reactions of small organic peroxyl radicals (RO2, with R = CH3, C2H5 and C3H7) have been investigated in aqueous solution. Laser-based radical generation and time-resolved broadband-diode array UV spectroscopy in a flow system were applied in this study. Absolute decadic absorption coefficients for the three radicals are given in intervals of 2 nm and the results of a study of the temperature dependence of their recombination reactions are presented.

Abstract:A laser photolysis-long path laser absorption (LP-LPLA) experiment has been used to determine the rate constants for H-atom abstraction reactions of the dichloride radical anion (Cl-2(-)) in aqueous solution. Investigation of OH radical kinetics with glycine, alanine, serine and threonine in the aqueous phase

Abstract:Amino acids are key substances in biological activities and can be emitted into the atmosphere as constituents of primary aerosols. Understanding the radical kinetics of amino acids is necessary to evaluate their atmospheric effects. In the present study, the hydroxyl radical (OH) reaction kinetics of glycine, alanine, serine and threonine were investigated in the aqueous phase. The temperature and pH dependent rate constants were measured by a laser flash photolysis-long path absorption setup using the competition kinetics method. Based on the measurements and speciation calculations, the OH radical reaction rate constants of the fully protonated (H2A+) and neutral (HA±) form were determined. The following T-dependent Arrhenius expressions were derived for the OH radical reactions with glycine, k(T, H2A+) = (9.1 ± 0.3) × 109 × exp[(-2360 ± 230 K)/T], k(T, HA±) = (1.3 ± 0.1) × 1010 × exp[(-2040 ± 240 K)/T]; alanine, k(T, H2A+) = (1.0 ± 0.1) × 109 × exp[(-1030 ± 340 K)/T], k(T, HA±) = (6.8 ± 0.4) × 1010 × exp[(-2020 ± 370 K)/T]; serine, k(T, H2A+) = (1.1 ± 0.1) × 109 × exp[(-470 ± 150 K)/T], k(T, HA±) = (3.9 ± 0.1) × 109 × exp[(-720 ± 130 K)/T]; and threonine, k(T, H2A+) = (5.0 ± 0.1) × 1010 × exp[(-1500 ± 100 K)/T], k(T, HA±) = (3.3 ± 0.1) × 1010 × exp[(-1320 ± 90 K)/T] (in units of L mol-1 s-1). The density functional theory calculation was performed using GAUSSIAN to simulate the energy barriers (EBarrier) of OH radical induced H-atom abstraction. According to the simulated results, amino and carboxyl group increase the EBarrier at the adjacent C‑atom and thus reduce the OH radical reactivity. Hydroxide and methyl group decrease the EBarrier at the adjacent C-atom, leading to an increase in the OH radical rate constant.
Kinetic Study of the OH + HO2 → H2O + O2 Reaction Using Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics and Quantum Dynamics

Abstract:The reaction OH + HO2 → H2O + O2 is a prototype of radical-radical reactions. It plays an important role in interstellar/atmospheric chemistry and combustion, and considerable attention has thus been dedicated to its kinetics. In our previous work, we reported an accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface for the title reaction on the ground triplet electronic state. The quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) approach was employed to investigate its kinetics. Although the QCT rate coefficients were in good agreement with some experimental and theoretical results, QCT cannot account for the quantum mechanical effects, such as zero-point vibrational energy, recrossing, and tunneling, which may significantly affect the rate coefficients, particularly at low temperatures. In this work, the reduced-dimensional quantum dynamics and ring polymer molecular dynamics calculations were carried out to examine these effects and their impact on rate coefficients over the temperature range of 300-1300 K.

Abstract:We investigated the reactions of the hydroxyl radical (OH) with cyclopentenone derivatives and cyclopentanone in a quasi-static reaction cell at 4 Torr across a 300-500 K temperature range. The OH radicals were generated using pulsed laser photolysis of hydrogen peroxide vapors, and the ketone reactants were introduced in excess. The relative concentrations of the radicals were monitored as a function of reaction time using laser-induced fluorescence. At room temperature, the reaction rate coefficients were measured to be 1.2(±0.1) × 10-11 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 2-cyclopenten-1-one (R1); 1.7(±0.2) × 10-11 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (R2); and 4.4(±0. 7) × 10-12 cm3 s-1 for reaction with 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (R3). Over the experimental temperature range, the rate coefficients can be fitted with the modified Arrhenius expressions k1(T) = 1.2 × 10-11 (T/300)0.26 exp (6.7 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1, k2(T) = 1.7 × 10-11 (T/300)6.4 exp (27.6 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1, k3(T) = 4.4 × 10-12 (T/300)17.8 exp (57.8 kJ mol-1/R {1/T - 1/300}) cm3 s-1. In the cases of 2-cyclopenten-1-one and 2-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, the temperature dependence of the rate coefficients is similar to that calculated or measured for noncyclic conjugated ketones. We also found that the reaction with 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one was slower, with rate coefficients similar to those measured for the reaction with the saturated cyclic ketone cyclopentanone. To discuss the experimental data, we use potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/6-311+G** level of theory. RRKM-based Master equation calculations were also performed to infer the most likely reaction products over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. We suggest that both abstraction and addition mechanisms contribute to the overall OH removal, forming radical products stabilized by resonance. We also discuss the relevance for combustion and atmospheric chemistry.

Abstract:The rate constant for the reaction of the hydrated glyoxyl radical (CH(OH)(2)-C(OH)(2) with O-2 has been determined as k(298 K) = (1.2 +/- 0.3) x 10(9) L mol(-1) s(-1) at pH 4.8. This experimental value is considerably higher than a widely used estimated value of about k = 1 x 10(6) L mol(-1) s(-1). As the aqueous phase conversion of glyoxal is of wide interest for aqSOA formation, we suggest that the newly determined rate constant should be applied in multiphase models. The formation of the dimerization product tartaric acid has as well been studied. This product is found, however in significant yields only when the oxygen content of the solution is reduced. The formation of dimers from the recombination of alkyl radicals in the atmospheric aqueous phase should hence be treated with great care. Finally, the reactions of the free radicals OH, NO3, and SO4- with glyoxal have been investigated and rate constants of k(298 K) (OH) = (9.2 +/- 0.5) x 10(8) L mol(-1) s(-1), k(298 K) (SO4-) = (2.4 +/- 0.2) x 10(7) L mol(-1) s(-1) and k(298) (K) (NO3) = (4.5 +/- 0.3) x 10(6) L mol(-1) s(-1) were obtained.

Abstract:T-dependent rate constants for the self-reaction of selected peroxyl radicals in aqueous solution have been determined. For C2H5O2·, HOCH2O2· and C2H4(OH)O2· negative activation energies have been found. The redox potential of CH3O2·, HOCH2O2·, ·O2CH2COOH can be estimated to E0 < 1 V due to reactivity against NO2−. The rate constant for the reaction of the methylperoxyl radical with bisulfite (HSO3−1) at T = 298 K and pH 4 has been determined to k = (5 ± 1)·105 l·mol−1·s−1. This reaction may be an important sink for the methylperoxyl radical in the condensed phase of the atmosphere at daytime. This is demonstrated by including the corresponding reactions into a box model (CAPRAM 2.3.)

Abstract:Laser flash photolysis combined with competition kinetics with SCN− as the reference substance has been used to determine the rate constants of OH radicals with three fluorinated and three chlorinated ethanols in water as a function of temperature. The following Arrhenius expressions have been obtained for the reactions of OH radicals with (1) 2-fluoroethanol, k1(T) = (5.7 ± 0.8) × 1011 exp((−2047 ± 1202)/T) M−1 s−1, (2) 2,2-difluoroethanol, k2(T) = (4.5 ± 0.5) × 109 exp((−855 ± 796)/T) M−1 s−1, (3) 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, k3(T) = (2.0 ± 0.1) × 1011 exp((−2400 ± 790)/T) M−1 s−1, (4) 2-chloroethanol, k4(T) = (3.0 ± 0.2) × 1010 exp((−1067 ± 440)/T) M−1 s−1, (5) 2, 2-dichloroethanol, k5(T) = (2.1 ± 0.2) × 1010 exp((−1179 ± 517)/T) M−1 s−1, and (6) 2,2,2-trichloroethanol, k6(T) = (1.6 ± 0.1) × 1010 exp((−1237 ± 550)/T) M−1 s−1. All experiments were carried out at temperatures between 288 and 328 K and at pH = 5.5–6.5. This set of compounds has been chosen for a detailed study because of their possible environmental impact as alternatives to chlorofluorocarbon and hydrogen-containing chlorofluorocarbon compounds in the case of the fluorinated alcohols and due to the demonstrated toxicity when chlorinated alcohols are considered. The observed rate constants and derived activation energies of the reactions are correlated with the corresponding bond dissociation energy (BDE) and ionization potential (IP), where the BDEs and IPs of the chlorinated ethanols have been calculated using quantum mechanical calculations. Abstract:Substituted phenols are known to readily react with the hydroxyl radical (OH˙), which is the most powerful atmospheric oxidant and is also most often used in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for wastewater treatment. We report temperature-dependent (278.15-318.15 K) second order kinetic rate constants for the aqueous-phase reactions of OH˙ with phenol and four substituted phenols: catechol, phloroglucinol, pyrogallol and 3-methylcatechol, with the last two measured for the first time. The constructed Hammett plots for mono- and di-substituted phenols have the potential to be further applied for predicting the reaction rate constants of other substituted phenols at 298.15 K. This will significantly facilitate the optimization of AOP and improve the predictive capabilities of atmospheric multiphase models in the future. Moreover, an advancement in the understanding of the underlying mechanism, i.e. OH˙ addition to the aromatic ring is made by theoretical calculations at the M06-2X level. We demonstrate that the position of substituents on the aromatic ring is important for the [OH-phenol]˙ adduct formation, which is supported by the experiment and theoretical calculations. Adjacent and nonadjacent electron donor/acceptor substituents differently impact the interplay between the activation energy and entropy. We also show that explicit solvation has to be accounted for in theoretical models in order to explicitly describe the formation of the transition state.

Abstract:The most important radicals which need to be considered for the description of chemical conversion processes in tropospheric aqueous systems are the hydroxyl radical (OH), the nitrate radical (NO3) and sulphur-containing radicals such as the sulphate radical (SO4-). For each of the three radicals their generation and their properties are discussed first in the corresponding sections. The main focus herein is to summarize newly published aqueous-phase kinetic data on OH, NO3 and SO4- radical reactions relevant for the description of multiphase tropospheric chemistry. The data compilation builds up on earlier datasets published in the literature. Since the last review in 2003 (H. Herrmann, Chem. Rev. 2003, 103, 4691-4716) more than hundred new rate constants are available from literature. In case of larger discrepancies between novel and already published rate constants the available kinetic data for these reactions are discussed and recommendations are provided when possible. As many OH kinetic data are obtained by means of the thiocyanate (SCN-) system in competition kinetic measurements of OH radical reactions this system is re-viewed in a subchapter of this review. Available rate constants for the reaction sequence following the reaction of OH + SCN- are summarized. Newly published data since 2003 have been considered and averaged rate constants are calculated. Applying competition kinetics measurements usually the formation of the radical anion (SCN)(2)(-) is monitored directly by absorption measurements. Within this subchapter available absorption spectra of the (SCN)(2)(-) radical anion from the last five decades are presented. Based on these spectra an averaged (SCN)(2)(-) spectrum was calculated. In the last years different estimation methods for aqueous phase kinetic data of radical reactions have been developed and published. Such methods are often essential to estimate kinetic data which are not accessible from the literature. Abstract:Rate constants for the aqueous-phase reactions of the hydroxyl radical with the dicarboxylic acids, succinic acid and pimelic acid were determined using the relative rate technique over the temperature range 287 K <= T <= 318 K and at pH = 2.0, 4.6 or 4.9 and 8.0. OH radicals were generated by H2O2 laser flash photolysis while thiocyanate was used as a competitor. The pH values were adjusted to obtain the different speciation of the dicarboxylic acids. The following Arrhenius expressions were determined (in units of L mol(-1) s(-1)): succinic acid, k(T, AH(2)) (2.1 +/- 0.1) x 10(10) exp[(-1530 +/- 250 K)/T], k(T, AH(-)) (1.8 +/- 0.1) x 10(10) exp[(-1070 +/- 370 K)/T], k(T, A(2-)) (2.9 +/- 0.2) x 10(11) exp[(-1830 +/- 350 K)/T] and pimelic acid, k(T, AH(2)) (7.3 +/- 0.2) x 10(10) exp[(-1040 +/- 140 K)/T], k(T, AH(-)) (1.8 +/- 0.1) x 10(11) exp[(-1200 +/- 240 K)/T], k(T, A(2-)) (1.4 +/- 0.1) x 10(12) exp[(-1830 +/- 110 K)/T]. A general OH radical reactivity trend for dicarboxylic acids was found as k(AH(2)) < k(AH) < k(A(2-)). By using the pH and temperature dependent rate constants, source and sinking processes in the tropospheric aqueous phase can be described precisely.
