Abstract:The structural and thermodynamic properties of the orthorhombic and cubic structure SrAl2 at pressure and temperature are investigated by using the ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory methodwithin the generalised gradient approximation (GGA). The calculated lattice parameters are in agreement with the available experimental data and other theoretical results. The phase transition predicted takes place at 0.5 GPa from the orthorhombic to the cubic structure at zero temperature. The thermodynamic properties of the zinc-blende structure SrAl2 are calculated by the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The pressure-volume relationship and the variations inthe thermal expansion a are obtained systematically in the pressure and temperature ranges of 0-5 GPa and 0-500 K, respectively.

Abstract:Two high density structures beta- and gamma-LiAlH4 are detected in LiAlH4, a promising hydrogen storage compound, upon compression in diamond anvil cells, investigated with synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principle calculations. The joint of the experimental and theoretical results has confirmed the sequence of the pressure-induced structural phase transitions from alpha-LiAlH4 (space group P2(1)/c) to beta-LiAlH4 (P2(1)/c-6C symmetry), and then to gamma-LiAlH4 (space group Pnc2), which are not reported in previous literatures. At the alpha to beta transition point for LiAlH4, the estimated difference in cell volume is about 20%, while the transformation from beta to gamma phase is with a volume drop smaller than 1%. The alpha to beta phase transition is accompanied by the local structure change from a AlH4 tetrahedron into a AlH6 octahedron, which contributes to a large volume collapse. Abstract:The important transition metal dihydride ZrH2 has been characterized using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction combined with diamond anvil cell techniques and ab initio calculations. The effect of a pressure-transmitting medium on the structural stability and compressive behavior was investigated under both hydrostatic pressure and nonhydrostatic pressure conditions. The ambient I4/mmm structure is stable under both nonhydrostatic and hydrostatic compressions. The supplementary theoretical calculations have proposed that the I4/mmm structure transformed into the P4/nmm structure above 100 GPa confirming the stability of the I4/mmm structure during the experimental runs. The difference in the volume reduction between the two compressions becomes larger with increasing pressure. Up to about 50 GPa, the volume collapse of nonhydrostatic compression is 6% relative to the hydrostatic compression. The present study offers a new approach with nonhydrostatic compression or shear stress for finding higher volumetric density hydrogen structures in metal hydrides.
In-situ Investigation Via High Energy X-ray Diffraction of Stress-Induced(0002)α→(110)β Transformation in a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr Alloy

Abstract:The deformation and load partitioning mechanisms among phases are critical to the detailed understanding of heterogeneous stress distributions at the submicron scale during the process of elastic-plastic transformation in dual-phase (α+β) titanium alloys. Therefore, in this work, a Ti-5.5Mo-7.2Al-4.5Zr-2.6Sn-2.1Cr titanium alloy was investigated via in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction. We examined the evolution of the lattice strain, peak intensity, and full width at half maximum under uniaxial tensile loading at room temperature. The results indicated that the stress-induced (0002)α→(110)β transformation can be preferentially initiated for lattice strains of 702 × 10−6–1500 × 10−6 and 592 × 10−6–1355 × 10−6 during the elastic loading stage of the {0002}α and {110}β reflections, respectively. In addition, various dog-bone-shaped specimens with interrupted strain amplitudes (0.3%, 3%, 5% and 8.5%) were characterized via transmission electron microscopy. The corresponding selected area electron diffraction pattern confirmed the occurrence of a (0002)α//(110)β Burgers orientation relationship when the alloy was subjected to a strain of ε = 0.3%. Furthermore, the results revealed that the anisotropic non-linear response of specific reflections (i.e., the (0002)α and (110)β reflections) will cause a phase transformation.
Novel High-Pressure Phases of Alp from First Principles

Abstract:By utilizing a crystal structure prediction software via particle swarm optimization, this study proposes three new high-pressure phases of aluminum phosphide (AlP) with high density and high hardness, in addition to previously proposed phases (wz-, zb-, rs-, NiAs-, β-Sn-, CsCl-, and Cmcm-AlP). These new phases are as follows: (1) an I4¯3d symmetric structure (cI24-AlP) at 55.2 GPa, (2) an R3¯m symmetric structure (hR18-AlP) at 9.9 GPa, and (3) a C222 symmetric structure (oC12-AlP) at 20.6 GPa. Based on first-principle calculations, these phases have higher energetic advantage than CsCl- and β-Sn-AlP at ambient pressure. The independent elastic constants and phonon dispersion spectra are calculated to check the mechanical and dynamic stabilities of these phases. According to mechanical property studies, these new AlP phases have higher hardness than NiAs-AlP, and oC12-AlP has the highest hardness of 7.9 GPa. Electronic band structure calculations indicate that NiAs- and hR18-AlP have electrical conductivity. Additionally, wz-, zb-, and oC12-AlP possess semiconductive properties with indirect bandgaps, and cI24-AlP has a semiconductive property with a direct bandgap.

Abstract:Alumina (α-Al 2 O 3 ) has been widely used as a pressure calibrant in static high-pressure experiments 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and as a window material in dynamic shock-wave experiments 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ; it is also a model material in ceramic science. So understanding its high-pressure stability and physical properties is crucial for interpreting such experimental data, and for testing theoretical calculations 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 . Here we report an in situ X-ray diffraction study of alumina (doped with Cr 3+ ) up to 136 GPa and 2,350 K. We observe a phase transformation that occurs above 96 GPa and at high temperatures. Rietveld full-profile refinements show that the high-pressure phase has the Rh 2 O 3 (II) ( Pbcn ) structure, consistent with theoretical predictions 22 . This phase is structurally related to corundum, but the AlO 6 polyhedra are highly distorted, with the interatomic bond lengths ranging from 1.690 to 1.847 Å at 113 GPa. Ruby luminescence spectra from Cr 3+ impurities within the quenched samples under ambient conditions show significant red shifts and broadening, consistent with the different local environments of chromium atoms in the high-pressure structure inferred from diffraction. Our results suggest that the ruby pressure scale needs to be re-examined in the high-pressure phase, and that shock-wave experiments using sapphire windows need to be re-evaluated.

Abstract:The atomic mechanism of phase transformation under high pressure has been the focus of researches. In the present study, the roles of hydrostatic pressure (P) on phase transformation temperature and microstructural evolution in aluminum (Al) during cyclic thermal loading are studied from molecular dynamics simulations. The FCC → Liquid → FCC, FCC → liquid → FCC + BCC, FCC → BCC → Liquid → BCC and BCC → Liquid → BCC transformation pathways were observed under 0 ≤ P ≤ 14 GPa, 15 ≤ P ≤ 21 GPa, 22 ≤ P ≤ 25 GPa and 26 ≤ P ≤ 100 GPa, respectively, during cyclic thermal loading. It should be noted that the melting temperature predicted by the used potential at high P is obviously lower than experimental results. The FCC → BCC transformation involves nucleation and growth of BCC phase. The nucleation of BCC phase undergoes by the continuous deformation of FCC lattice, corresponding to the Bain transformation path. The growth of BCC phase is completed by the atomic diffusion. With increasing P, the 111 < 11 2 ̅ > twin and {111} stacking fault in FCC phase evolve to five-fold twin and HCP phase, respectively. The microstructure of BCC phase is dominated by the {112}<110> twin. Insight obtained in this work paves the way for understanding the atomic mechanism of high pressure phase transformation.

Abstract:We studied in situ the local atomic structure evolution of an equiatomic Zr50Cu50 metallic glassy alloy under high pressure compression inside a diamond anvil cell using synchrotron x-ray total scattering. The empirical potential structure refinement method was used to reconstruct the three-dimensional atomic models at each pressure step, and to analyze the spatially averaged local atomic structure configurations. The interatomic distances of different atomic pairs are reduced at different rates with increasing pressure and the Cu-Cu pairs exhibit the highest percentage reduction. Between ambient pressure and 36.85 GPa, the atomic separation of the Cu-Cu pairs is reduced by ∼12% compared to ∼5% for Zr-Zr and Zr-Cu pairs. Such disproportional decrease in interatomic distance results in inhomogeneous atom reconfiguration in the short atomic range. With the increase of pressure, the Zr atoms move preferentially towards the Zr-Zr pairs, while the Cu atoms move preferentially towards the Cu-Cu pairs, creating inhomogeneous atom reconfiguration with positive short-range order coefficients of 0.0309 and 0.0464 for Zr-Zr and Cu-Cu respectively, but a negative value of −0.0464 for Zr-Cu pairs. Voronoi tessellation method was also used to study the evolution of the short-range atom packing versus pressure, elucidating the cause for the bimodal distribution of the bond angle distributions. The research sheds light on understanding of the atomic reconfiguration of equiatomic alloys under high pressure.

Abstract:Sm2O3 was compressed at room temperature up to 44.0 GPa and then decompressed back to ambient pressure. In situ X-ray diffraction was used to monitor the structural changes in the sample. A cubic to hexagonal phase transformation was observed in Sm2O3 for the first time. After decompression back to ambient pressure, the hexagonal phase was not quenchable and transformed to a monoclinic phase. Ab initio Density- Functional-Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to obtain theoretical data for comparison with the experimental results and elucidation of the transformation mechanism. A possible phase transformation mechanism that is consistent with the experimental results and theoretical calculations is proposed.

Abstract:The crystal structure, phase stability, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the Al2Cu (θ), Al2Cu (θ′) and Al2Cu (Ω) phases are studied by the first-principles method. The predicted lattice constants are consistent with the available literature data. θ, θ′ and Ω phases are thermodynamically stable, and do not undergo any phase transition under pressure. The values of B for Ω are larger than that for θ and θ′ phases, while the values of G for θ are smaller than that for Ω and θ′ phases. The studies also reveal that pressure can improve the elastic anisotropy of the θ, θ′ and Ω phases. The Debye temperature, heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient for the phases are determined by the quasi-harmonic Debye model. Under identical conditions, the values of ΘD from high to low is in the following order: θ′>Ω>θ. The heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient for θ, θ′ and Ω phases decrease with pressure when the temperature is kept constant. In contrast, thermal expansion coefficient α is more sensitive to any changes in pressure than any temperature change in the temperature range, 300–800K.

Abstract:The behavior of aluminum under high pressures and temperatures was investigated by in situ time-of-flight neutron diffraction with a developed Toroidal Anvil Press (TAP-98). The effect of the displacement of the center of diffraction, which is caused by sample movement during compression, is corrected by an additional calibration. Unit-cell dimensions, measured up to P=5.7 GPa and T=900 K, were derived from the refinement results and fitted to the high-temperature Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. With (∂KT/∂P)T fixed at 4, we obtained K0=72.8(±2.4) GPa, (∂KT/∂T)P=−0.04(±0.01) GPa K−1, and αT (K−1)=3.7(±1.6)×10−5+9.7(±3.5)×10−8T. Our data are compared with previous experimental data involving shock wave, static compression, ultrasonic, and thermal-expansion measurements and with theoretical predictions. The results demonstrate that the newly developed high-pressure high-temperature system for in situ neutron diffraction is reliable. It was also found that the crystalline orientation of Al grains became highly preferred when the sample was heated to 900 K at ∼4 GPa.

Abstract:Pressure-induced structural modifications in high-entropy alloys with varying Al contents, AlxCoCrFeNi (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.75, 1.5), have been investigated at pressures up to ∼50 GPa by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and, following depressurization, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In AlxCoCrFeNi compounds with x ≤ 0.3, all of which exhibit an initial single-phase face-centered cubic (fcc) structure, proportionality between the Al content and the critical pressure for transformation to hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phases, distinguished by a distinct planar stacking sequence, is observed. This is attributed to the structural distortion arising from the large size of Al atoms relative to those of the other constituent elements, which results in an increase in the formation energy of stacking faults and a decrease in compressibility. High-resolution TEM results demonstrate variation of the stacking sequence from ABCABC, typical of fcc materials, to ABABAB, typical of hcp materials, in CoCrFeNi following high pressure. In Al0.75CoCrFeNi, which exhibits an initial dual-phase structure [fcc and body-centered cubic (bcc)], the result again shows the formation of a (hcp) phase despite its higher Al content, suggesting that the bcc phase may be more amenable to pressure-induced phase modification than is the fcc phase, which is absent for lower Al contents. However, the trend of transformation inhibition by increasing the Al content is again observed, with Al1.5CoCrFeNi retaining its initial structure up to the highest pressure achieved. Determination of these compositional trends in the high-pressure phase response of these materials may enable the production of new phase mixtures with precisely tuned phase proportions and potentially desirable properties.
On the Origin and Structure Characteristics of Tri-coordinated Extraframework Aluminum Species in Dealuminated Zeolites.

Abstract:Post-synthetic dealumination treatment is a common tactic adopted to improve the catalytic performance of industrialized zeolitic catalysts through enhancements in acidity and stability. However, among the possible extra-framework aluminum (EFAL) species in dealuminated zeolites such as Al3+, Al(OH)(2+), Al(OH)(2)(+), AlO+, AlOOH, and Al(OH)(3), the presence of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species, which exhibit large quadrupolar effect due to the lack of hydrogen-bonding species, was normally undetectable by conventional one- and two-dimensional H-1 and/or Al-27 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental P-31 SSNMR using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as the probe molecule, we report herein a comprehensive study to certify the origin, fine structure, and possible location of tri-coordinated EFAL-Al3+ species in dealuminated HY zeolite. The spatial proximities and synergies between the Bronsted and various Lewis acid sites were clearly identified, and the origin for the observed EFAL-Al3+ species with ultra-strong Lewis acidity was deduced to be at the expense of adjacent Bronsted acid sites. The excellent performance of such tri-coordinated EFAL species was furthermore confirmed by glucose isomerization reactions.
Study of the High-Pressure Hcp Phase of Al: A Computer Aided Design and Simulation

Abstract:Based on the first-principles scheme, we have built several hcp-Al crystals and have calculated the lattice constants, cell volumes and elastic constants at high pressures using the plane-wave pseudo-potential method within ultrasoft pseudo-potentials. The basic thermal properties of Al are investigated by using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The results show that the bulk moduli are still very large at high temperatures; hence hcp-Al can retain its stability at high pressure and high temperature. On the other hand, the temperature effects on the heat capacity and thermal expansion are significant. Several interesting phenomena have been observed in these quantities at T> 300K. More importantly, the negative shear moduli of hcp-Al indicate that our calculation results need to be verified by experiments in the near future.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling pressure-related structural transformations, which can be utilized to tune functional and mechanical properties of materials, is one of the most important research themes in materials science. However, the underlying mechanism governing pressure-driven phase transformations in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) remains poorly understood. By combining an in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and ab initio calculations, we reveal that the face-center-cubic (fcc) phase, rather than the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase, is thermodynamically stable in the MoxCrFeCoNi HEA system under atmospheric conditions. However, a fcc to hcp transformation was identified under pressure, resulting from a pressure-induced electronic redistribution. Remarkably, the valence electron concentration has been further demonstrated as a critical factor for regulating this transformation, the reduction of which by Mo doping can encourage the hcp transformation. Our studies provide new insights into the physical processes underlying the allotropic transformation that enables customized alloy design of high-performance HEAs.

Abstract:A zone-axis synchrotron diffraction study of complex and inhomogeneous Fe1-xO thin single crystal under pressure is presented in this letter. Using this method, four phases are observed to coexist in a single crystal of Fe1-xO at 35 GPa in diamond-anvil cells. One phase has cubic symmetry, whereas the other three phases have not been reported previously and can be interpreted as either orthorhombic or monoclinic. The discovery of multiple phases existing in Fe1-xO indicates that structural inhomogeneity of the sample can be induced under high pressure, a result that has important implications for the high P-T behavior of this complex material. Such information is not available using conventional diffraction techniques. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

High-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and infrared microspectroscopy: applications to dense hydrous phases

Abstract:Synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared (IR) absorption spectra of hydrous and 'anhydrous' forms of phase X Were measured to 30 GPa at room temperature. Three OH stretching modes were found in the hydrous phase, and surprisingly one sharp OH mode Was observed in the previously characterized anhydrous phase. All OH stretching modes soften and broaden with increasing pressure and become very weak above similar to20 GPa. XRD indicates that the crystal structure remains stable up to 30 GPa. Combining IR absorption and XRD results, the behaviour is attributed to pressure-induced distortion of the Si2O7 groups and disorder of the hydrogen atoms. The bulk moduli of the hydrous and 'anhydrous' phases are in the region of 74 GPa.
High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of SrMoO4 and pressure-induced structural changes

Abstract:SrMoO4 was studied under compression up to 25 GPa by angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction. A phase transition was observed from the scheelite-structured ambient phase to a monoclinic fergusonite phase at 12.2(9) GPa with cell parameters a = 5.265(9) A, b = 11.191(9) A, c = 5.195 (5) A, and beta = 90.9, Z = 4 at 13.1 GPa. There is no significant volume collapse at the phase transition. No additional phase transitions were observed and on release of pressure the initial phase is recovered, implying that the observed structural modifications are reversible. The reported transition appeared to be a ferroelastic second-order transformation producing a structure that is a monoclinic distortion of the low-pressure phase and was previously observed in compounds isostructural to SrMoO4. A possible mechanism for the transition is proposed and its character is discussed in terms of the present data and the Landau theory. Finally, the EOS is reported and the anisotropic compressibility of the studied crystal is discussed in terms of the compression of the Sr-O and Mo-O bonds.

Abstract:Nanoparticles exhibit unique properties due to their surface effects and small size, and their behavior at high pressures has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Herein, a series of in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements with a synchrotron radiation source and Raman scattering have been performed on HfO2 nanocrystals (NC-HfO2) with different grain sizes using a symmetric diamond anvil cell at ambient temperature. The experimental data reveal that the structural stability, phase transition behavior, and equation of state for HfO2 have an interesting size effect under high pressure. NC-HfO2 quenched to normal pressure is characterized by transmission electron microscopy to determine the changing behavior of grain size during phase transition. We found that the rotation of the nanocrystalline HfO2 grains causes a large strain, resulting in the retention of part of an orthorhombic I (OI) phase in the sample quenched to atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the physical mechanism of the phase transition of NC-HfO2 under high pressure can be well explained by the first-principles calculations. The calculations demonstrate that NC-HfO2 has a strong surface effect, that is, the surface energy and surface stress can stabilize the structures. These studies may offer new insights into the understanding of the physical behavior of nanocrystal materials under high pressure and provide practical guidance for their realization in industrial applications.
