Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.

Abstract:The study on transition metal mediated self-assemblies has drawn considerable attention during the past decade. This article focused on the significant progress made in the area of multinuclear supramolecular construction through pseudo-aromatic carboranyl species Cp*M[S(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and pyridine-based ligands over the past few years. Structurally pre-defined complexes, from mono-molecules to three-dimensional frameworks, can be obtained in high yields under mild reaction conditions through self-assembly, and the structural features of solid state confirmed by X-ray crystallography are also discussed.

Abstract:The properties of supramolecular structures are highly dependent on their metal-centered building blocks and organic linkers, thus the search for novel systems will lead to new functions and applications for these unique assemblies. Here, two discrete triangular trimetallic sandwich building blocks were developed to construct supramolecular assemblies through coordination-driven self-assembly with organosulfur ligands. A series of tubelike (Tr2Pd3)4L6 assemblies (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl ring) were obtained from a discrete triangular tripalladium sandwich complex with bifunctional organosulfur ligands. By replacing the metal centers of the platinum analogue, the self-assembly process resulted in the clean formation of (Tr2Pt3)2L3 triple helicates instead of tubelike species. The trimetallic sandwich building blocks were also shown to form face-capped (Tr2M3)4L4 (M = Pd or Pt) tetrahedral cages when trifunctional organosulfur ligands were used. The supramolecular assemblies were comprehensively analyzed by X-ray crystallography. A metal-cluster-induced structural transformation between (Tr2Pd3)4L4 tubes and (Tr2Pt3)2L3 triple helicates was observed. Furthermore, the face-capped (Tr2Pd3)4L4 cage possesses a tetrahedral cavity allowing the encapsulation of a series of guests.

Abstract:Single-crystal-to-single-crystal metalation of organic ligands represents a novel method to prepare metal–organic complexes, but remains challenging. Herein, a hierarchical self-assembly {(H12L8)·([N(C2H5)4]+)3·(ClO4−)15·(H2O)32} (1) (L = tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl) amine) consisting of π-stacked cubes which are assembled from eight partially protonated L ligands is obtained. By soaking the crystals of compound 1 in the aqueous solution of Co(SCN)2, the ligands coordinate with Co2+ ions stoichiometrically and ClO4− exchange with SCN− via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, leading to {([CoSCNL]+)8·([NC8H20]+)3·(SCN)11·(H2O)13} (2).

Abstract:The hierarchical self-assembly (HSA) strategy widely utilized in biological systems has been applied in artificial systems to orchestrate small building blocks into complex functional architectures. The non-interfering interactions glue various building blocks together and produce new species with attractive properties. Herein, we functionalized NHC-based assemblies with orthogonal host-guest interaction to fabricate metal-carbene based supramolecular polymer gel. A series of unique crown ether-appended cylinder-like trinuclear AuI hexacarbene assemblies [Au3(L)2](PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) were synthesized from the corresponding trisimidazolium salts H3-L(PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) in which the N-wingtip of the imidazole moieties were substituted with three identical crown ether groups of different sizes (B15C5, B18C6, B21C7, DB24C8). The gold carbene assembly is able to complex six ammonium salts without disrupting the underlying metal-carbene cylinders. In addition, the supramolecular polymer metallogel featuring a multiple-responsiveness can be formed by using [Au3(A4)2](PF6)3 appended with DB24C8 as the core and bisammonium salt as the cross-linker. The case of introducing orthogonal interaction to NHC moiety by N-wingtip substitution demonstrates the feasibility and the power of such strategy to expand the NHC-based supramolecular system and endow them with novel properties.

Abstract:The self-organization of multicomponent supramolecular systems involving a variety of two-dimensional (2D) polygons and three-dimensional (3D) cages is presented. Nine self-organizing systems, SS1-SS9, have been studied. Each involves the simultaneous mixing of organoplatinum acceptors and pyridyl donors of varying geometry and their selective self-assembly into three to four specific 2D (rectangular, triangular, and rhomboid) and/or 3D (triangular prism and distorted and nondistorted trigonal bipyramidal) supramolecules. The formation of these discrete structures is characterized using NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In all cases, the self-organization process is directed by: 1) the geometric information encoded within the molecular subunits and 2) a thermodynamically driven dynamic selfcorrection process. The result is the selective self-assembly of multiple discrete products from a randomly formed complex. The influence of key experimental variables - temperature and solvent - oil the self-correction process and the fidelity of the resulting self-organization systems is also described.

Abstract:Template-oriented multi-component synthesis method has been proven to be an exceedingly reasonable and excellent method for the synthesis of giant two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) supramolecules, but designing and constructing heteroleptic and controllable self-assembly without unexpected by-products remains a challenge. Here we report two discrete trefoil-shaped metallacycle S1 and metallacage S2 by heteroleptic self-assembly using one hexaphenylbenzene core ligand and two capping ligands. The 2D trefoil-shaped metallacycle S1 could resemble the emblem of the classic ‘Mitsubishi’ motif. The use of template-oriented ligand and bent spacer ligand promotes the quantitative formation of the desired 3D trefoil-shaped metallacage S2. The formed metallacage S2 possesses a molecular weight up to 36 kDa, diameter 6.6 nm and height 3.0 nm. All supramolecular coordination complexes were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H NMR, 2D COSY, 2D NOESY, 2D DOSY), high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry ESI-MS, ESI-TWIM-MS, TEM and AFM.

Abstract:Solid state structural studies of three supramolecular coordination complexes establish the formation of hetero‐bimetallic two‐ and three‐dimensional ensembles involving sulfonated calix[4]arene, and sodium ions and low nuclearity lanthanide(III) ions. The interplay of components is altered in response to the addition of different auxiliary molecules during crystallisation which is associated with significant changes in the metal coordination environments and overall molecular packing, as established in comparing the structures of complexes of similar cell dimensions with those available in the literature. The sulfonated calixarene form a common self‐assembly array despite different lanthanides being incorporated, as an isostructural series of complexes. Crystallographic analysis shows a continually decreasing trend in the lanthanide–oxygen bond length as the lanthanide atomic number increases. As smaller molecules are incorporated to the hetero‐bimetallic calixarene system, the self‐assembly and the metal coordination environment are perturbed.

Abstract:Despite tremendous progress in metal-organic frameworks, only limited success has been achieved with metal-chalcogenide organic frameworks. Metal-chalcogenide organic frameworks are desirable because they offer a promising route towards tunable semiconducting porous frameworks. Here, four novel semiconducting chalcogenide-organic hybrid compounds have been synthesized through a solvothermal method. Multitopic organic molecules, i.e., 1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (L-1), 1,3,5-tris(4-pyridyl-transethenyl) benzene (L-2) and tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene) methane (L-3), have been used as linkers to assemble Zn(SAr)(2) or Zn-2(SAr)(4) units to generate different patterns of spatial organizations. Single-crystal structural analyses indicate that compounds NTU-2, NTU-3 and NTU-4 possess two-dimensional layer structures, while compound NTU-1 adopts a one-dimensional coordination framework (NTU-n, where n is the number related to a specific structure). The diffuse-reflectance spectra demonstrate that these four compounds possess indirect bandgaps and their tunable bandgaps are correlated with their compositions and crystal structures.

Abstract:Many materials properties are conditioned by the relative arrangement of metal ions in the solid state. Supramolecular architectures such as helicates may be designed with controlled metal to metal spacing in their midst. However, shorter distances and more extensive electronic communication may be achieved between individual architectures through their self-assembly in the solid state. In this manuscript, we report a rational analysis of the solid-state self-organization of dinuclear metallocylinders constructed by octahedral ion coordination with the 1,2,3-triazol-4-ylpyridyl chelate (Fe-II, Ni-II). Overall, aromatic and aliphatic spacers control the range and ranking of metal to metal distances in a predictive manner.

Abstract:Self-assembly is a key guiding principle for the design of complex nanostructures. Substituted beta oligoamides offer versatile building blocks that can have inherent folding characteristics, offering geometrically defined functionalities that can specifically bind and assemble with predefined morphological characteristics. In this work hierarchical self-assembly is implemented based on metal coordinating helical beta-oligoamides crosslinked with transition metals selected for their favourable coordination geometries, Fe 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , and two metalates, MoO 4 2− , and WO 4 2− . The oligoamide Ac-β 3 Aβ 3 Vβ 3 S-αHαHαH-β 3 Aβ 3 Vβ 3 A ( 3H ) was designed to allow crosslinking via three distinct faces of the helical unit, with a possibility of forming three dimensional framework structures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the formation of specific morphologies that differ characteristically with each metal. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results reveal that the metal centres can be reduced in the final structures, confirming strong chemical interaction. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) confirmed the spatial distribution of metals within the self-assembled networks, also revealing molecular fragments that confirm coordination to histidine and carboxyl moieties. The metalates MoO 4 2− and WO 4 2− were also able to induce the formation of specific superstructure morphologies. It was observed that assembly with either of nickel, copper, and molybdate form thin films, while cobalt, zinc, and tungstate produced specific three dimensional networks of oligoamides. Iron was found to form both a thin film and a complex hierarchical assembly with the 3H simultaneously. The design of the 3H substituted beta oligoamide to readily form metallosupramolecular frameworks was demonstrated with a range of metals and metalates with a degree of control over layer thicknesses as a function of the metal/metalate. The results validate and broaden the metallosupramolecular framework concept and establish a platform technology for the design of functional thin layer materials.

Abstract:Self-assembly via coordination bonding facilitates the creation of diverse inorganic–organic molecular hybrids with distinct structures and properties. Recent advances in this field have been driven by the versatility of organic ligands and inorganic units. Lacunary polyoxometalates are a class of well-defined metal-oxide clusters with a customizable number of reactive sites and bond directions, which make them promising inorganic units for self-assembled molecular hybrids. Herein, we report a novel synthesis method for self-assembled molecular hybrids utilizing the reversible coordination of multidentate imidazole ligands to the vacant sites of lacunary polyoxometalates. We synthesized self-assembled molecular hybrids including monomer, dimers, and tetramer, demonstrating the potential of our method for constructing intricate hybrids with tailored properties and functionalities.

Abstract:In modern coordination chemistry, supramolecular coordination complexes take advantage of ligand design to control the shapes and sizes of such architectures. Here we describe how to utilize starting building blocks and a multifunctional ligand to rationally design and synthesize different types of discrete assemblies. Using a hydroxamate ligand featuring two pair of chelating sites together with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium fragments, we were able to construct a series multinuclear organometallic macrocycles and cages through stepwise coordination-driven self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational work, show that selective coordination modes were ascribed to the significant electronic density differences of the two chelating sites, (O,O') and (N,N'). The results underline the advantages of the discrimination between soft and hard binding sites, and suggest that hydroxamic acids can be used as a versatile class of facile multifunctional scaffold for the construction of novel two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures.
Engineering Two-Dimensional Multilevel Supramolecular Assemblies from a Bifunctional Ligand on Au(111)

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the supramolecular assemblies from a bifunctional ligand on Au(111), towards engineering two-dimensional (metal-) organic multilevel nanostructures. The bifunctional ligand employed, including two Br atoms and one carboxylic terminal, offers multiple bonding motifs with different configurations and binding energies. These bonding motifs are highly self-selective and self-recognizable, and thus afford the formation of subunits that contribute to engineering multilevel self-assemblies. Our scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, in combination with the density functional theory calculations, revealed various hydrogen, halogen and alkali-carboxylate bonding motifs dictating the different levels of the assemblies. The multilevel assembly protocol based on a judicious choice of multiple bonding motifs guarantees a deliberate control of surface-confined (metal-) organic nanostructures. Our findings may present new opportunities for the fabrication of complex two-dimensional (metal-) organic nanostructures with potential in applications of functionally diverse nanomaterials.
