Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.

Abstract:Supramolecular complexes system is a novel and charming domain because of its rapid development and widespread applications in different areas. Self-assembly, as a main method of forming supramolecular complexes, is significant to polymeric materials and life sciences. Hydrogen-bonded complexes are classified according to their multiplicity and associating ways in this article. The self-assembly properties and research of hydrogen-bonded complexes are comprehensively reviewed. Meanwhile, theoretical studies on hydrogen-bonded complexes of our research group are introduced.

Abstract:Macromolecular self-assembly has made explosive development in the last several decades, are being extensively explored in the fields of drug delivery, lithography, catalysis, molecular electronics, sensors, and so many others. In this review, we summarize the self-assembly of macromolecules such as polymers, dendrimers, molecular nanoparticles, colloids, DNA and proteins, from the aspect of architectural engineering and mainly focus on the periodic and quasi-periodic assembled structures. In particular, simple building blocks can be conjugated together to construct complex macromolecular motifs with different architectures and physical interactions. We first introduce the concept of architectural engineering, then present a brief overview of supramolecular interactions and five main categories of building blocks, including polymer coils, dendrons, rods, discs, and polyhedra. We further discuss the detailed self-assembly behaviors of fifteen types of specific macromolecular motifs involving different building blocks. Special attention is paid to the architectural effect of macromolecular self-assembly. In the end, future perspective on architectural engineering is briefly mentioned.

Abstract:We report the controllability of the complexity of surface-supported supramolecular assembly on metal surfaces. By introducing mismatch between the molecular packing and the surface atomic periodicity in the systems with comparable strength of intermolecular and molecule-substrate interactions, a homomolecular assembly exhibiting two-dimensional multilevel structures up to quaternary level was observed. In such a multiperiodicity modulated system, neither the intermolecular nor molecule-substrate interactions solely dominate the assembly, resulting in complicated multilevel structures. We further demonstrated that the multilevel assemblies can serve as templates for site-selective adsorption of guest molecules.

Abstract:Interlocked molecules are a type of supramolecules whose sub-components are held together not by covalent bonds but non-covalent interactions. Examples include rotaxanes, catenanes, Solomon links, ring-in-ring complexes, molecular Borromean rings, molecular knots and interlocked cages. The design and manufacture of these architectures is mainly based on self-assembly and template-directed methodologies. Inspired by the successful utilization of coordination-driven assembly in metallasupramolecular systems, the metallacyclic assembly of interlocked superstructures is developing rapidly and as such makes a fascinating topic for reviewing. Abstract:Self-assembly of three-dimensional (3-D) architecture using terpyridine (tpy)-based building blocks is challenging and seldom addressed due the fixed geometry (around 180 degrees) of tpy-M(II)-tpy (M = Ru, Fe, Zn, and Cd) connectivity. Here we describe the self-assembly of 3-D giant metallo-supramolecular cubes using three-armed terpyridine ligands constructed on adamantane with molecular weight up to 18 k and edge length at similar to 4.9 nm, which is significantly larger than the sizes of previous metallo-supramolecular cubes. Instead of using metal center as vertices in the commonly used synthetic strategy of 3-D molecular coordination ensembles, these cages [M12L8] bear 8 ligands as vertices with 12 metal ions on the edges. With a suitable edge length, the giant cubes appear to be the sole product after self-assembly from a variety of possible architectures. The 3-D metallo-supramolecules were characterized and supported by NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, travelling wave ion mobility-MS and AFM.

Abstract:Because of the dense chemical varieties and the vast chemical scales, it is feasible to produce complex nanoscale architectures with well-defined structural motifs organized over large areas in two dimensions or volumes in three dimensions. Various methods based on electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction, in situ mineralization, covalent bond and inorganic scaffold, and protein-protein interaction and DNA hybridization, have all been demonstrated to successfully construct multidimensional nanoscale architectures from bottom up. In this review, the existing physical, chemical and biological methods for constructing nanoscale architectures by either directed synthesis or self-assembly are surveyed, with a focus on biological methods, and the mechanisms involved are systematically discussed with selected examples.

Abstract:Multicomponent self-assembly in one pot provides an efficient way for constructing complex architectures using multiple types of building blocks with different levels of interactions orthogonally. The preparation of multiple types of building blocks typically includes tedious synthesis. Here, we developed a multicomponent synthesis/self-assembly strategy, which combined covalent interaction (C-N bond, formed through condensation of pyrylium salt with primary amine) and metal-ligand interaction (N → Zn bond, formed through 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-Zn coordination) in one pot. The high compatibility of this pair of interactions smoothly and efficiently converted three and four types of components into the desired complex structures, which are supramolecular Kandinsky Circles and spiderwebs, respectively.

Abstract:The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.

Abstract:The development of science and technology of advanced materials using nanoscale units can be conducted by a novel concept involving combination of nanotechnology methodology with various research disciplines, especially supramolecular chemistry. The novel concept is called 'nanoarchitectonics' where self-assembly processes are crucial in many cases involving a wide range of component materials. This review of self-assembly processes re-examines recent progress in materials nanoarchitectonics. It is composed of three main sections: (1) the first short section describes typical examples of self-assembly research to outline the matters discussed in this review; (2) the second section summarizes self-assemblies at interfaces from general viewpoints; and (3) the final section is focused on self-assembly processes at interfaces. The examples presented demonstrate the strikingly wide range of possibilities and future potential of self-assembly processes and their important contribution to materials nanoarchitectonics. Abstract:Promoted by the controllable synthesis of nanomaterials, nanocrystal self-assembly has attracted much attention for both scientific interest and potential applications. In this article, we highlight the recent advances in applying the breath figure (BF) method-a traditional technique to prepare patterned porous polymer films-to nanocrystal self-assembly. This new combined strategy leads to hierarchically ordered structures from nanocrystal superlattices to micrometer patterns, showing appealing prospects in various fields.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, supramolecular chirality in discrete metallosupramolecular architectures has received considerable attention. In this review, a comprehensive summary of discrete, chiral coordination-driven structures, including helices, metallacycles, metallocages, etc., is presented. Although chirality can be introduced prior to, during or even after the coordination self-assembly process, this review puts major emphasis on the more recent development of metallosupramolecular architectures from chiral components, where chirality arises from the enantiopure or racemic scaffolds (bridging or auxiliary ligand). Special attention will be paid to homochiral metallo-assemblies using achiral components where chirality is obtained as a consequence of the twisting of the ligands. Additionally, the potential applications of homochiral metallosupramolecular architectures are also discussed. We hope that this review will be of interest to researchers attempting to design new elaborate homochiral metallosupramolecular architectures with even greater complexity and potential for functions such as chiral recognition, enantiomer separation, asymmetric catalysis, nonlinear sensors, and devices.

Abstract:Controlling the self-assembly of giant molecular building blocks into complex architectures with similar hierarchy to biological species remains a major challenge in supramolecular chemistry. Akin to protein structure, here we present the self-assembly of giant molecular nanocapsules into supramolecular coordination polymers with controlled hierarchy from primary to secondary and tertiary structures. First, we successfully prepared discrete nanocapsules (secondary structures) consisting of multicomponents, such as organic macrocycles and metal-based secondary building units (primary structures). Second, these nanocapsules can self-organize into various 2D and 3D supramolecular coordination polymers (tertiary structures) through coordination-driven assembly. The periphery 24 flexible alkyl chains and 24 metal ions available for potential coordination make these nanocapsules comparable to functionalized solid nanoparticles with non-specific binding sites at the surface and allow the nanocapsules to self-adjust their orientations and coordination modes to facilitate the self-assembly process. This study sheds light on the self-assembly of giant building units with complex molecular structures and opens up possibilities for the design of new hierarchical architectures with innovative properties and functions in many applications such as biomimics, biomedicine, and molecular devices.

Abstract:Owing to the reversible, directional and predictable nature of metal–ligand coordination, coordination-driven self-assembly has emerged as a powerful bottom-up strategy for preparing metal-containing supramolecules or materials. In the field of 2D constructs, considerable progress has been made in the coordination-driven self-assembly of small discrete polygons (<5 nm) and infinite 2D polymers. However, structures of intermediate size have not been widely explored because of challenges in their synthesis and characterization. In this Review, we focus on the assembly of large 2D metallosupramolecular architectures of increasing size and complexity through three distinct approaches: expanding the size of macrocycles, increasing the number of layers within concentric polygons and forming complex structures by tessellation. These large but discrete 2D metallosupramolecules possess the unique features of both macrocycles, including a precisely controlled structure with high solubility for solution-based applications and characterization, and infinite polymers, such as an ordered distribution of the functionalities. Therefore, these systems could serve as ideal models for investigating the structure–property–function relationships of 2D materials.

Abstract:Using a series of tritopic 2,2':6',2 "-terpyridine (tpy) ligands constructed on adamantane, three discrete 3D metallo-supra-molecular architectures were assembled, i.e., trigonal bipyramidal, tetrahedron, and cube. The self-assembly used tritopic ligands as corner directing units and metal ions as glue units at the edge. The angles of the linkers between adamantane and tpy head play a critical role in guiding the assembled structures, which have the general formula of M3nL2n, where M denotes metal ion and L denotes ligand. All complexes were fully characterized by H-1, C-13 NMR, diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry. The binary mixtures of LA and LC or LB and LC underwent a self-sorting process that led to the self-assembly of discrete 3D structures. The self-sorting behavior is solely based on the angles precoded within the arm of tritopic ligands. Moreover, kinetic study of preassembled cube and tetrahedron demonstrated a slow ligand exchange process toward a statistical mixture of hetero tetrahedrons with LA and LB.

Abstract:Terpyridine (tpy)-based 3D discrete metallosupramolecular architectures, which are often inspired by polyhedral geometry and the biological structures found in nature, have drawn significant attention from the community of metallosupramolecular chemistry. Because of the linear tpy-M(II)-tpy connectivity, the creation of sophisticated 3D metallosupramolecules based on tpy remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Nevertheless, with recent advancement in ligand design and self-assembly, diverse 3D metallosupramolecular polyhedrons, such as Platonic solids, Archimedean solids, prims as well as Johnson solids, have been constructed and their potential applications have been explored. This review summarizes the progress on tpy-based discrete 3D metallosupramolecules, aiming to shed more light on the design and construction of novel discrete architectures with molecular-level precision through coordination-driven self-assembly.

Abstract:Metal-coordinated compounds with well-defined shapes and abundant functionalities are ideal building blocks for constructing functional nanostructures. These types of compounds have been widely used in various fields such as catalysis as well its sensor and nanodevice fabrication. Recently, our group has systematically investigated the self-assembly of metal-coordinated compounds on solid surfaces by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Functional molecular nanostructures were constructed based on direct observations of ligands and complex molecules at sub-molecular or molecular resolutions. This paper summarizes results from the self-assembly of metal-coordinated compounds as reported by our group as well its some recent progress in this field. It is expected that this review paper will be helpful for the exploration of assembly rules of metal-coordinated compounds on solid surfaces.

On the other hand, the deliberate synergy offered by organic countercations that support the self-assembly of these clusters greatly expands the opportunity for the functionalization of complex building units via control of multiple interactions. The ionic combination of the inorganic clusters with hydrophilicity and the cationic organic component with hydrophobicity leads to discrete properties of the complexes. Significantly, the core-shell structure with rigid-flexible features and amphiphilicity will pave the way for hierarchical self-assemblies of the obtained complexes, while the intrinsic characteristics of the metal oxide clusters can be modulated through external physicochemical stimuli. Within this context, over the past decade we have extensively explored the ionic combination of inorganic polyanionic clusters with cationic organic amphiphiles and devoted our efforts to establishing the general rules and structure-property relationships of the formed complexes for constructing self-assemblies at the interface, in solution, and in solid matrixes. Specific interest has been focused on the functional synergy deriving from the incompatible components in highly organized self-assemblies. In this Account, we describe the recent progress on the ionic complexation of polyoxometalate clusters with cationic amphiphiles and the construction of diverse self-assembled nanostructures. First, the fundamental structural characteristics and molecular geometries of the prepared complexes are analyzed. The construction principle and diversity of the self-assembly based on the complexes and the smart stimuli response are then discussed, subject to the adjustment of various non-covalent interactions occurring in the assemblies. Subsequently, we enumerate the functional applications of the ionic complexes assembling into organic, inorganic, and even biological matrixes. The inspiration from the construction of ionic complexation and self-assembly in this Account provides vivid profiles for the design of hybrid materials involving nanoclusters and/or nanoparticles with rich potentials in addition to polyoxometalate chemistry.
