Abstract:Design intelligence is an important branch of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the intelligent models and algorithms in creativity and design. In the context of AI 2.0, studies on design intelligence have developed rapidly. We summarize mainly the current emerging framework of design intelligence and review the state-of-the-art techniques of related topics, including user needs analysis, ideation, content generation, and design evaluation. Specifically, the models and methods of intelligence-generated content are reviewed in detail. Finally, we discuss some open problems and challenges for future research in design intelligence.

Abstract:We review the state-of-the-art interaction techniques of visualization authoring tools. The visualization tools tend to help users in the creation, exploration, or presentation of visualizations. Also, they allow users to craft expressive designs or extract data from visualizations. The review presents the interaction techniques integrated into the tools for those mentioned above five high-level goals. We cover each goal’s tools and summarize how a sequence in the independent interaction techniques leads to the goal. We also discuss how well researchers had evaluated the usability and intuitiveness of interaction techniques. We aimed to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluations. To that end, from the perspective of human cognition, we reviewed the goals, procedures, and findings of evaluations. Principally, human cognition is engaged when they perform tasks in a tool. The interaction techniques bridge the gap between human cognition and the goals they want to achieve from the tool. To sum up, in this review, we present a novel triad ‘goals-interaction techniques-cognition’ taxonomy. Besides, the review suggests the need for further work to enhance tools and understand users.

Abstract:In the field of artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction (HCI) technology and its related intelligent robot technologies are essential and interesting contents of research. From the perspective of software algorithm and hardware system, these above-mentioned technologies study and try to build a natural HCI environment. The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of HCI and intelligent robots. This research highlights the existing technologies of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and other senses, which are widely used in human interaction. Based on these same technologies, this research introduces some intelligent robot systems and platforms. This paper also forecasts some vital challenges of researching HCI and intelligent robots. The authors hope that this work will help researchers in the field to acquire the necessary information and technologies to further conduct more advanced research.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the methodology and results from the evaluation of shapeSIFT: a multi-dimensional visualization tool for exploring part repositories in the context of ecoconscious design. The goals of this work are twofold, to create a categorization scheme for user evaluation methods specific to information visualization tools in eco-conscious design, and to formulate a user study for the shapeSIFT interface based on the developed categorization scheme. Our proposed scheme categorizes user evaluation methods based on two axes, (a) focus of the conducted user evaluation, and (b) development stage of the tool being evaluated. This scheme was used as the basis for conducting a guided formative expert review of the shapeSIFT interface with five domain experts in an industry setting. In this study we gathered experts' comments, feedback, and usage behaviors, while they used the shapeSIFT interface to perform tasks reflective of real-world design practices. Results from the study show that shapeSIFT was easy-to-use and effective for part selection in the context of redesign. Motivated by these positive preliminary results, we intend to improve the shapeSIFT interface and conduct follow-up studies with a larger pool of designers.

Abstract:Recent interest in design through the artificial intelligence (AI) lens is rapidly increasing. Designers, as a special user group interacting with AI, have received more attention in the Human-Computer Interaction community. Prior work has discussed emerging challenges that persist in designing for AI. However, few systematic reviews focus on AI for design to understand how designers and AI can augment each other's complementary strengths in design collaboration. In this work, we conducted a landscape analysis of AI for design, via a systematic literature review of 93 papers. The analysis first provides a bird's eye view of overall patterns in this area. The analysis also reveals three themes interpreted from the paper corpus associated with AI for design, including AI assisting designers, designers assisting AI, and characterizing designer-AI collaboration. We discuss the implications of our findings and suggested methodological proposals to guide HCI toward research and practices that center on collaborative creativity.

Abstract:An innumerable number of individual choices go into discovering a new book. There are unmistakably two groups of booklovers: those who like to search online, follow other people's latest readings, or simply react to a system's recommendations; and those who love to wander between library stacks, lose themselves behind bookstore shelves, or simply hide behind piles of (un)organized books. Depending on which group a person may fall into, there are two distinct and corresponding mediums that inform his or her choices: digital, that provides efficient retrieval of information online, and physical, a more tactile pursuit that leads to unexpected discoveries and promotes serendipity. How could we possibly bridge the gap between these seemingly disparate mediums into an integrated system that can amplify the benefits they both offer? In this paper, we present the BookVIS application, which uses book-related data and generates personalized visualizations to follow users in their quest for a new book. In this new redesigned version, the app brings associative visual connections to support intuitive exploration of easily retrieved digital information and its relationship with the physical book in hand. BookVIS keeps track of the user's reading preferences and generates a dataSelfie as an individual snapshot of a personal taste that grows over time. Usability testing has also been conducted and has demonstrated the app's ability to identify distinguishable patterns in readers' tastes that could be further used to communicate personal preferences in new "shelf-browsing" iterations. By efficiently supplementing the user's cognitive information needs while still supporting the spontaneity and enjoyment of the book browsing experience, BookVIS bridges the gap between real and online realms, and maximizes the engagement of personalized mobile visual clues.

Abstract:The key to preserving traditional crafts lies in living transmission, which is inseparable from sustaining artistic production, audience consumption, and progressive innovation with the physical media. As HCI researchers, we focus on the hybrid crafts field, which involves numerous cross-disciplinary integration cases between traditional craftsmanship and digital technology at the physical level, providing inspiration for innovating and enlivening traditional crafts. We conducted a multi-perspective review of 85 hybrid craft articles related to traditional crafts over the past decade, considering aspects such as craft categories, digital technology, target users, and research areas. Through reflection, we propose a design framework for fostering innovation and revitalizing traditional crafts. This paper aims to offer insight into the innovation and enlivenment of traditional crafts through a hybrid craft perspective while also serving as a first review of the hybrid craft field from the traditional craftsmanship perspective.

This unique book offers a clear discussion of this form of interface design, including a theoretical basis for why it is important, and examples of how it can be done. Abstract:We report on the state-of-the-art of software visualization. To ensure reproducibility, we adopted the Systematic Literature Review methodology. That is, we analyzed 1440 entries from IEEE Xplore and ACM Digital Library databases. We selected 105 relevant full papers published in 2013-2019, which we classified based on the aspect of the software system that is supported (i.e., structure, behavior, and evolution). For each paper, we extracted main dimensions that characterize software visualizations, such as software engineering tasks, roles of users, information visualization techniques, and media used to display visualizations. We provide researchers in the field an overview of the state-of-the-art in software visualization and highlight research opportunities. We also help developers to identify suitable visualizations for their particular context by matching software visualizations to development concerns and concrete details to obtain available visualization tools.

Abstract:Information visualization is a rapidly evolving field with a growing volume of scientific literature and texts continually published. To keep abreast of the latest developments in the domain, survey papers and state‐of‐the‐art reviews provide valuable tools for managing the large quantity of scientific literature. Recently, a survey of survey papers was published to keep track of the quantity of refereed survey papers in information visualization conferences and journals. However, no such resources exist to inform readers of the large volume of books being published on the subject, leaving the possibility of valuable knowledge being overlooked. We present the first literature survey of information visualization books that addresses this challenge by surveying the large volume of books on the topic of information visualization and visual analytics. This unique survey addresses some special challenges associated with collections of books (as opposed to research papers) including searching, browsing and cost. This paper features a novel two‐level classification based on both books and chapter topics examined in each book, enabling the reader to quickly identify to what depth a topic of interest is covered within a particular book. Readers can use this survey to identify the most relevant book for their needs amongst a quickly expanding collection. In indexing the landscape of information visualization books, this survey provides a valuable resource to both experienced researchers and newcomers in the data visualization discipline. A systematic review on the practice of evaluating visualization

Abstract:We present an assessment of the state and historic development of evaluation practices as reported in papers published at the IEEE Visualization conference. Our goal is to reflect on a meta-level about evaluation in our community through a systematic understanding of the characteristics and goals of presented evaluations. For this purpose we conducted a systematic review of ten years of evaluations in the published papers using and extending a coding scheme previously established by Lam et al. [2012]. The results of our review include an overview of the most common evaluation goals in the community, how they evolved over time, and how they contrast or align to those of the IEEE Information Visualization conference. In particular, we found that evaluations specific to assessing resulting images and algorithm performance are the most prevalent (with consistently 80-90% of all papers since 1997). However, especially over the last six years there is a steady increase in evaluation methods that include participants, either by evaluating their performances and subjective feedback or by evaluating their work practices and their improved analysis and reasoning capabilities using visual tools. Up to 2010, this trend in the IEEE Visualization conference was much more pronounced than in the IEEE Information Visualization conference which only showed an increasing percentage of evaluation through user performance and experience testing. Since 2011, however, also papers in IEEE Information Visualization show such an increase of evaluations of work practices and analysis as well as reasoning using visual tools. Further, we found that generally the studies reporting requirements analyses and domain-specific work practices are too informally reported which hinders cross-comparison and lowers external validity.

Abstract:Recent advancements in HCI and AI research attempt to support user experience (UX) practitioners with AI-enabled tools. Despite the potential of emerging models and new interaction mechanisms, mainstream adoption of such tools remains limited. We took the lens of Human-Centered AI and presented a systematic literature review of 359 papers, aiming to synthesize the current landscape, identify trends, and uncover UX practitioners' unmet needs in AI support. Guided by the Double Diamond design framework, our analysis uncovered that UX practitioners' unique focuses on empathy building and experiences across UI screens are often overlooked. Simplistic AI automation can obstruct the valuable empathy-building process. Furthermore, focusing solely on individual UI screens without considering interactions and user flows reduces the system's practical value for UX designers. Based on these findings, we call for a deeper understanding of UX mindsets and more designer-centric datasets and evaluation metrics, for HCI and AI communities to collaboratively work toward effective AI support for UX.
