Abstract:A gold(III)-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond formation reaction between arenes and electron-deficient alkynes or alkenes is described. Electron-rich arenes can be efficiently functionalized with the alkyne or alkene substrates. This reaction can be run with neat reactants at ambient temperature. Under the "solventless" conditions, clean product was obtained from a reaction of equal molar amounts of arene and alkyne substrates. The mild conditions and potential tolerance to different functional groups make this method practical for arene functionalization and for constructing complicated molecules. Efficient preparation of various coumarins from aryl alkynoates was demonstrated. Preliminary mechanistic studies were performed to probe the pathway of this reaction.

Abstract:An unprecedented direct C H bond functionalization of unprotected phenols with alpha-aryl alpha-diazoacetates and diazooxindoles was developed. A tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite derived gold complex promoted the highly chemoselective and site-selective C H bond functionalization of phenols and N-acylanilines with gold-carbene generated from the decomposition of diazo compounds, furnishing the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields at rt. The salient features of this reaction include readily available starting materials, unprecedented C H functionalization rather than X H insertion, good substrate scope, mild conditions, high efficiency, and ease in further transformation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of C H functionalization of unprotected phenols with diazo compounds.

Abstract:Herein, we have developed a novel and simple protocol to realize the C-H bond functionalization/dearomatization of naphthols and phenols with ortho-alkynylaryl-α-diazoesters under gold(i) catalysis. In this protocol, various spirocyclic molecules could be obtained in good yields with excellent chemo- and regio-selectivity and moderate to good diastereoselectivity.

Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:Here, an unprecedented ligand and counteranion-controlled and site-selectivity switchable direct C-H bond functionalization of unprotected naphthols with α-aryl-α-diazoesters was developed. In this transformation, site selectivities are realized by turning on/off the coordination between metal complexes and hydroxy groups. The preliminary mechanism revealed that the interaction between the hydroxy group and gold catalyst plays a key role in switching the site-selectivity of gold-carbene. This protocol potentially provides a novel design for C-H bond functionalization.

Abstract:C-H bonds are ubiquitous in organic molecules. Homogenous gold-catalyzed direct functionalization of unsaturated C-H bonds has emerged as a powerful method in our synthetic toolbox. However, C-sp3-H bonds have larger dissociation energy and lower proton acidity, and thus the efficient and exquisitely selective cleavage of this kind of chemical bonds for the formation of new carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds is still a great challenge. In this tutorial review, we will highlight the recent achievements of gold-catalyzed oxidative and redox-neutral C-sp3-H bond functionalization, which opens new avenues for economical and sustainable construction of fine chemicals.

Abstract:C−H bond functionalization has been one of most important subject in chemistry. The carbene transfer reaction is one of the most straightforward and efficient approaches for site‐selective C−H bond functionalization in the presence of transition‐metals. Gold catalysts, which are different with the common‐used transition‐metals (such as Rh, Cu, Ru, Fe), displayed their unique catalytic activity in carbene transfer reactions, especially for C−H bond functionalization. In this focus review, we summarized recent progress of C−H bond functionalization via the decomposition of diazo compounds catalyzed by gold complexes. We also highlighted the specificity and provided the mechanistic rationale to understand these reactions.

Abstract:The direct functionalization of C–H bonds has drawn the attention of chemists for almost a century. C–H activation has mainly been achieved through four metal-mediated pathways: oxidative addition, electrophilic substitution, σ-bond metathesis and metal-associated carbene/nitrene/oxo insertion. However, the identification of methods that do not require transition-metal catalysts is important because methods involving such catalysts are often expensive. Another advantage would be that the requirement to remove metallic impurities from products could be avoided, an important issue in the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds. Here, we describe the identification of a cross-coupling between aryl iodides/bromides and the C–H bonds of arenes that is mediated solely by the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline as catalyst in the presence of KOt-Bu as a base. This apparently transition-metal-free process provides a new strategy with which to achieve direct C–H functionalization.

Abstract:In past decade, gold revealed more and more unique properties in carbene chemistry. It was disclosed in our recent communication (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 6904) that gold carbenes have unprecedented chemo- and site-selectivity and ligand effect toward the functionalization of C-H bonds in phenols. In this full article, we report a comprehensively combined theoretical and experimental study on the mechanism of the insertion of gold carbenes into C-H and O-H bonds in phenol. It significantly revealed that the ligands have an important effect on C-H insertion and the reaction proceeds through a pathway involving the formation of an enolate-like intermediate. Moreover, two water molecules serving as a proton shuttle are believed to be the key issue for achieving chemoselective C-H functionalization, which is strongly supported by the DFT calculations and control experiments. It is the first time that a clear explanation is given about the prominent catalysis of gold carbenes toward C-H functionalization based on a theoretical and experimental study.

Abstract:Here we report the first example of alkyne trifunctionalization through simultaneous construction of C–C, C–O, and C–N bonds via gold catalysis. With the assistance of a γ-keto directing group, sequential gold-catalyzed alkyne hydration, vinyl–gold nucleophilic addition, and gold(III) reductive elimination were achieved in one pot. Diazonium salts were identified as both electrophiles (N source) and oxidants (C source). Vinyl–gold(III) intermediates were revealed as effective nucleophiles toward diazonium, facilitating nucleophilic addition and reductive elimination with high efficiency. Abstract:Direct C–H functionalization has recently emerged as one of the most efficient strategies to access structurally complex molecules from readily accessible feedstocks in an atom- and step-economic manner. In particular, enantioselective C–H activation has garnered increasing attention by enabling chemists to efficiently assemble valuable chiral compounds by asymmetrically manipulating C–H bonds into useful functionalities. Apart from the extensively studied C–C bond formation, very few endeavors have been focused on the C–X formation analogs. Motivated by the utility of the latter approach in constructing academically and industrially important heteroatom-containing chiral compounds, we provide herein an overview on C–X forming asymmetric C–H activation reactions proceeding through C–H metalation. The advancements are organized according to the employed catalytic systems, which include Pd(II) catalysis, group-9 CpxM(III) catalysis, monovalent group-9 metal catalysis, and multi-boryl/silyl Ir(III) catalysis, with emphasis on the design philosophy, mechanism, and mode of enantiocontrol.
Selective Activation of Aromatic C-H Bonds Catalyzed by Single Gold Atoms at Room Temperature

Abstract:Selective activation and controlled functionalization of C-H bonds in organic molecules is one of the most desirable processes in synthetic chemistry. Despite progress in heterogeneous catalysis using metal surfaces, this goal remains challenging due to the stability of C-H bonds and their ubiquity in precursor molecules, hampering regioselectivity. Here, we examine the interaction between 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) molecules and Au adatoms on a Ag(111) surface at room temperature (RT). Characterization via low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, spectroscopy, and noncontact atomic force microscopy, supported by theoretical calculations, revealed the formation of organometallic DCA-Au-DCA dimers, where C atoms at the ends of the anthracene moieties are bonded covalently to single Au atoms. The formation of this organometallic compound is initiated by a regioselective cleaving of C-H bonds at RT. Hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations show that this regioselective C-H bond cleaving is enabled by an intermediate metal-organic complex which significantly reduces the dissociation barrier of a specific C-H bond. Harnessing the catalytic activity of single metal atoms, this regioselective on-surface C-H activation reaction at RT offers promising routes for future synthesis of functional organic and organometallic materials.
