Abstract:In the early 1990s, Puig created his theory of fusion systems as a tool in modular representation theory. Later, Broto, Levi and Oliver used this theory to provide a formal setting for and prove results about the p -completed classifying spaces of finite groups. Aschbacher also started a program to establish a local theory of fusion systems similar to the local theory of finite groups. In this paper, we define the notion of ranks for fusion systems which imitates the notion of p -local ranks for finite groups and prove some results about weakly normal subsystems and factor systems.

Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:We investigate the one-point restriction of the conformal blocks on $(\mathbb{P}^1,\infty, w,0)$ defined by modules over a vertex operator algebra. By restricting the module attached to the point $\infty$ to its bottom degree, we obtain a new formula to calculate fusion rules using a module over the degree-zero Borcherds' Lie algebra. This formula holds under more general assumptions than Frenkel-Zhu's fusion rules theorem. By restricting the module attached to the point $w$ to its bottom degree, we obtain a more general version of Li's nuclear democracy theorem for vertex operator algebras.

Weight conjectures for $\ell$-compact groups and spetses

Abstract:Fundamental conjectures in modular representation theory of finite groups, more precisely, Alperin's Weight Conjecture and Robinson's Ordinary Weight Conjecture, can be expressed in terms of fusion systems. We use fusion systems to connect the modular representation theory of finite groups of Lie type to the theory of $\ell$-compact groups. Under some mild conditions we prove that the fusion systems associated to homotopy fixed points of $\ell$-compact groups satisfy an equation which for finite groups of Lie type is equivalent to Alperin's Weight Conjecture. For finite reductive groups, Robinson's Ordinary Weight Conjecture is closely related to Lusztig's Jordan decomposition of characters and the corresponding results for Brauer $\ell$-blocks. Motivated by this, we define the principal block of a spets attached to a spetsial ${\mathbb Z}_\ell$-reflection group, using the fusion system related to it via $\ell$-compact groups, and formulate an analogue of Robinson's conjecture for this block. We prove this formulation for an infinite family of cases as well as for some groups of exceptional type. Our results not only provide further strong evidence for the validity of the weight conjectures, but also point toward some yet unknown structural explanation for them purely in the framework of fusion systems.

Abstract:We prove that the categories of weight modules over the simple $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal vertex operator algebras at fractional admissible levels and central charges are rigid (and hence the categories of weight modules are braided ribbon categories) and that the decomposition formulae of fusion products of simple projective modules conjectured by Thomas Creutzig, David Ridout and collaborators hold (including when the decomposition involves summands that are indecomposable yet not simple). In addition to solving this old open problem, we develop new techniques for the construction of intertwining operators by means of integrating screening currents over certain cycles, which are expected to be of independent interest, due to their applicability to many other algebras. In the example of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ these new techniques allow us to give explicit formulae for a logarithmic intertwining operator from a pair of simple projective modules to the projective cover of the tensor unit, namely, the vertex operator algebra as a module over itself.

Fusion in Fractional Level sl^(2)-Theories with k=-1/2

Abstract:The fusion rules of conformal field theories admitting an sl^(2)-symmetry at level k=-1/2 are studied. It is shown that the fusion closes on the set of irreducible highest weight modules and their images under spectral flow, but not when "highest weight" is replaced with "relaxed highest weight". The fusion of the relaxed modules, necessary for a well-defined u^(1)-coset, gives two families of indecomposable modules on which the Virasoro zero-mode acts non-diagonalisably. This confirms the logarithmic nature of the associated theories. The structures of the indecomposable modules are completely determined as staggered modules and it is shown that there are no logarithmic couplings (beta-invariants). The relation to the fusion ring of the c=-2 triplet model and the implications for the beta gamma ghost system are briefly discussed.

Abstract:A classical theorem of Wielandt states that any two subnormal subgroups of a finite group $G$ generate a subnormal subgroup of $G$. We prove versions of this theorem for regular localities and for fusion systems. Along the way we prove also a purely group-theoretical result which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We address the problem of how simple a solution can be for a given quantumlocal consistency instance. More specifically, we investigate how small therank of the global density operator can be if the local constraints are knownto be compatible. We prove that any compatible local density operators can besatisfied by a low rank global density operator. Then we study both fermionicand bosonic versions of the N-representability problem as applications. Afterapplying the channel-state duality, we prove that any compatible local channelscan be obtained through a global quantum channel with small Kraus rank.

Abstract:Here we study bounds on the Frobenius-Schur exponent of spherical fusion categories based on their global dimension generalizing bounds from the representation theory of finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras. Our main result is that if the Frobenius-Schur exponent of a modular fusion category is a prime power for some prime integer $p$, then it is bounded by the norm of its global dimension when $p$ is odd, and four times the norm of its global dimension when $p=2$; these bounds are optimal. If one assumes in addition pseudounitarity, the categories achieving the optimal bound are completely described and we attain similar bounds and classifications for arbitrary spherical fusion categories. This proof includes an explicit classification of modular fusion categories of Frobenius-Perron dimension $p^5$; all examples which are not pointed are constructed explicitly from the Ising categories and the representation theory of extraspecial $p$-groups.

Abstract:An important conjecture in additive combinatorics, number theory, and algebraic geometry posits that the partition rank and analytic rank of tensors are equal up to a constant, over any finite field. We prove the conjecture up to a logarithmic factor. Our proof is largely independent of previous work, utilizing recursively constructed polynomial identities and random walks on zero sets of polynomials. We also introduce a new, vector-valued notion of tensor rank (``local rank''), which serves as a bridge between partition and analytic rank, and which may be of independent interest as a tool for analyzing higher-degree polynomials.

Abstract:Our work explores fusions, the multidimensional counterparts of mean-preserving contractions and their extreme and exposed points. We reveal an elegant geometric/combinatorial structure for these objects. Of particular note is the connection between Lipschitz-exposed points (measures that are unique optimizers of Lipschitz-continuous objectives) and power diagrams, which are divisions of a space into convex polyhedral ``cells'' according to a weighted proximity criterion. These objects are frequently seen in nature--in cell structures in biological systems, crystal and plant growth patterns, and territorial division in animal habitats--and, as we show, provide the essential structure of Lipschitz-exposed fusions. We apply our results to several questions concerning categorization.

Abstract:This paper introduces the notion of fusion action system, an abstraction of the $p$-local data of a finite group acting on a finite set. Fusion action systems are closely connected with the theory of fusion systems; we detail the relationship of this new definition to the existing literature. We also develop a theory of classifying spaces of fusion action systems, analogous to the relationship between by $p$-local finite groups and fusion systems. This allows us to discuss the covering space theory arising from a group action in a fusion-theoretic context.

Abstract:We give lower bounds for the rank of a symmetric fusion category in characteristic $p\geq 5$ in terms of $p$. We prove that the second Adams operation $\psi_2$ is not the identity for any non-trivial symmetric fusion category, and that symmetric fusion categories satisfying $\psi_2^a=\psi_2^{a-1}$ for some positive integer $a$ are super Tannakian. As an application, we classify all symmetric fusion categories of rank 3 and those of rank 4 with exactly two self dual simple objects.

On the weak local Arthur packets conjecture for split classical groups

Abstract:Recently, motivated by the theory of real local Arthur packets, making use of the wavefront sets of representations over non-Archimedean local fields $F$, Ciubotaru, Mason-Brown, and Okada defined the weak local Arthur packets consisting of certain unipotent representations and conjectured that they are unions of local Arthur packets. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for split classical groups with the assumption of the residue field characteristic of $F$ being large. In particular, this implies the unitarity of these unipotent representations. We also discuss the generalization of the weak local Arthur packets beyond unipotent representations which reveals the implications of a conjecture of Jiang on the structure of wavefront sets for representations in local Arthur packets.
