Abstract:Engineering ethics are both a kind of professional ethics and practical ethics. Its method is multi-dimensional. Philosophical, casuistical, technical, social and professional methods are all suitable for it. Through analyzing the issue of how to set up conventional procedures of engineering ethics as well as its focus areas, this paper draws the conclusion that technical competence and moral integrity are two principal values which together contribute to the term “professionalism”. The professional trust which the public endow engineering profession with and the professional credit which the public expect an engineer to have are necessary for building up the harmonious society.

Abstract:Engineers play an integrated role of a company employee,an ordinary citizen,and an enterprise manager in the social life,each of which has its own responsibilities,aspirations and others’expectations.Engineers are thereby faced with the resulting dilemma of behavior selections of different roles,and thus the role morality con-flict arises.The paper attempts to present a tackling and settlement mechanism by analyzing its contexts.At a macro level,we can proceed from the engineering professional construction to establish the institutional environment for con-flict resolution and perfect it as well;at the micro level,we should foster individual engineers'moral autonomy by considering their moral psychology,enabling engineers to internalize external standards as their own principles of moral behavior.Considering that the role morality conflict occurs in concrete contexts and engineering practice con-tains moral practice in itself,engineering practice is the only solution to the role morality conflict.

Abstract:The paradigm of traditional engineering ethics inevitably leads to the fragmentation and one-sided research,and leads the research of engineering ethics into a microscopic perspective.With the development of society and the progress of science and technology,the traditional ethics theory and methods cannot be used to deal with the complexity of the engineering practice anymore.In order to overcome the limitations of traditional research on fragmentation and microscopic view,this paper introduces morphological methods trying to analyze the rationality and necessity of the morphological methods in engineering ethics.It also provide some suggestions for the future study.
An Overview on Engineering Ethics Research in China

Abstract:The engineering ethics research in China's academic circles has been carried out in three levels: the first level is the metatheoretical study of engineering ethics,including the studies of the contents,disciplinary position and research purposes of engineering ethics; the second is the reflection on the practice of engineering ethics,including ethical conflicts,ethical principle and practical way in engineering practices; the third is the ethical examination to some specific problems,involving sensitive industries and links in engineering practices and conflict of interest. Presently,theoretical study of engineering ethics in China is not mature yet,but the research subject has an obvious feature of being professional. In addition,more researches are needed to be done in the ethical thoughts concerning normal engineering projects being or to be constructed,and applied engineering technologies. The ethics study in China has shown a positive tendency of producing an increasing number of research findings,strengthening the discipline construction,and combing qualitative research with quantitative research.

Abstract:Ethics is receiving increased emphasis in civil and environmental engineering. However, despite the proliferation of college textbooks and courses encouraging ethical reasoning, engineers in practice often limit their understanding narrowly to their individual actions. Broader issues of global importance are usually addressed in an ad-hoc manner, if at all. Our goal is to present the topic of ethics in a way that appeals to engineers, especially those receptive to 'systems thinking'. Our broader motivation is to encourage the development of educated, virtuous and caring professionals who engage in contextual ethical reasoning about complex systems. To these ends, we summarise relevant theoretical and applied concepts for ethical analysis, building from a recent chapter that reflects on ethics from an engineering systems perspective (but applied to the healthcare industry). We emphasise virtue ethics and the ethics of care as crucial supplements to duty ethics and utilitarianism. Analytical methods we discuss include Value Sensitive Design, Design for Care, and a multi-level classification of ethical issues into the micro (individual), meso (institutional), and macro (societal) levels. This work collects relevant considerations for designers of civil and environmental engineering systems and researchers interested in developing related design and analysis methods that include practical ethical reasoning. This work is part of a Special Issue on Systems Perspectives: Clarity through Examples (see Dias 2023).

Abstract:For several decades, there have been warnings about certain ethical faults in engineers regarding corruption in different works, which lead to collapses and the death of people, calling engineering into question and affecting the social development of communities. Ethics is an educational responsibility, the ethical debate must take place inside and outside the classroom, since studies carried out in different universities indicate that ethics continues to be a pending subject in engineering programs. This study seeks to contribute to educational innovation for the teaching of ethics in engineering through documentary review and interviews with students and teachers. It was found that the education of ethics in engineering should be included in the curriculum as an important factor in the training of engineers, from a practical dimension, which includes the study of cases, moral dilemmas, and based on problems applied to the environment.

Abstract:Engineering ethics is an important category of ethics and engineering education research. Engineering ethical responsibility plays a more and more important role in contemporary society, which not only involves the individual behavior norms of engineers, but also relates to the development direction and social responsibility of the whole engineering industry. By analyzing the intrinsic value of engineering ethical responsibility, this paper expounds its importance to safeguard public safety, maintain social justice and promote sustainable development. Secondly, by studying the application and development trend of engineering ethical responsibility in practice, this paper reveals the requirements of engineering industry standards, laws and regulations, and organizational guidelines on engineering ethical responsibility, and analyzes the challenges and solutions in ethical practice. Through the research of this paper, we can better understand the core meaning and practical development of engineering ethical responsibility, provide guidance for engineers and relevant stakeholders, and promote the social responsibility and sustainable development of the engineering industry.

Abstract:The complexity of modern engineering makes engineering increasingly become a collective activity, and the multiple subjects involved are constantly being highlighted. When engineering risks occur, it is often impossible to attribute all the responsibilities to a specific person, especially when researching to maximize profits. Engineering activities face more significant risks and challenges. Engineering ethics research addresses the ethical challenges and dilemmas engineers encounter in their professional practice. However, existing research methods and models may not adequately capture the diversity and interdependence of the actors and factors involved in engineering projects. For this reason, it is urgent for engineering ethics research to build a research and decision-making model that can integrate multiple subjects and multiple disciplines to solve ethical problems in specific engineering practices. By doing so, this paper hopes to promote ethical awareness and responsibility among engineers and other stakeholders and to ensure that engineering activities can genuinely serve the common good of humanity.

Abstract:In the past few years, calls for integrating ethics modules in engineering curricula have multiplied. Despite this positive trend, a number of issues with these embedded programs remains. First, learning goals are underspecified. A second limitation is the conflation of different dimensions under the same banner, in particular confusion between ethics curricula geared towards addressing the ethics of individual conduct and curricula geared towards addressing ethics at the societal level. In this article, we propose a tripartite framework to overcome these difficulties. Our framework analytically decomposes an ethics module into three dimensions. First, there is the ethical dimension, which pertains to the learning goals. Second, there is the moral dimension, which addresses the moral relevance of engineers conduct. Finally, there is the political dimension, which scales up issues of moral relevance at the civic level. All in all, our framework has two advantages. First, it provides analytic clarity, i.e. it enables course instructors to locate ethical dilemmas in either the moral or political realm and to make use of the tools and resources from moral and political philosophy. Second, it depicts a comprehensive ethical training, which enables students to both reason about moral issues in the abstract, and to socially contextualize potential solutions.

Abstract:We have come to accept the fact that, if given a chance, all too many Americans will cheat, whether they are college students, purchasing managers, engineers, or company executives. This article deals, not with theory, but with everyday applications of ethics, which are urgent. The public's worry about professional ethics in general spills over to concern about the need to put ethical issues into science and engineering curricula. A number of universities are making significant progress using the “pervasive” method of integrating case studies involving ethical issues into regular engineering courses. Professional societies and many major corporations support efforts to make scientists and engineers critically examine their ethical values. Ethics training is needed for all engineers and scientists in order that they may acquire the skill of making decisions based on an appropriate set of values.

Abstract:This work explores engineering ethics empirically in a “developing world” context through a framework of care ethics. Care ethics, a.k.a., the ethic(s) of care, is particularly suitable for the “developing world” context because it helps draw attention to imbalances of power (e.g., inequality, differential opportunity, and limitations on autonomy) that are often neglected by other ethical frameworks. In this work, we selected one element of care ethics (responsibility) and operationalized it in several ways: the language of responsibility; notions of paternalism; and awareness of key, influencing stakeholders. These lenses were developed and refined iteratively by employing them in case study analyses of two design project reports written by teams of senior undergraduate engineering students. Our interpretive analysis of this data outlined significant differences in care-ethical responsibility as viewed through each lens. For example, one group demonstrated little paternalism and considered several key, influencing stakeholders in their report, while the other group employed a more paternalistic approach and considered fewer key influencing stakeholders. In the interest of broadening ethical awareness in engineering, the findings and outcomes of this work can be used by educators to inform the design of course materials, exercises, and evaluation/grading criteria, such as by adapting these lenses for use in self-and/or peer-assessment. This work can also be used by researchers interested in care ethics and/or engineering student responses to issues of humanitarian or social justice nature to inform interview question and survey item design. Finally, this work contributes to the discourse of engineering ethics by developing and applying an ethical framework from the wider literature that has not received much attention in engineering ethics to date.

Abstract:China's engineering practice is faced with acute and complex ethical issues in the new era. The ethical improvement of engineering management lags behind the rapid growth of engineering construction, which hinders the effective solution of ethical issues and the high-quality development of Chinese engineering. Using methods of theoretical analysis, case study, and expert interviews, and considering the significant role of engineering managers and the incomplete applicability of engineering ethics for engineers in China's engineering practice, we elaborate the demand for transforming the key ethical subject and conducting research on engineering management ethics. Moreover, we summarize the implications of engineering management ethics at the micro, meso, and macro levels, discuss the negative impacts of engineering on society and environment and the causes of corresponding ethical issues, present the dynamic development of engineering management ethical issues from the perspective of engineering evolution, and propose five basic ethical principles for engineering managers in practice. To promote the construction of engineering management ethics in China, we suggest that engineering management ethics education and training should be provided to cultivate and motivate engineering managers to enhance ethical awareness, actively undertake ethical responsibilities, improve moral competence, develop ethical leadership, and exert ethical wisdom; the promotion and application of management ethics guidelines should be supported to provide guidance for solving ethical issues in the whole lifecycle of engineering and to improve the overall ethical environment of the society.
Student-inspired activities for the teaching and learning of engineering ethics

Abstract:Ethics teaching in engineering can be problematic because of student perceptions of its subjective, ambiguous and philosophical content. The use of discipline-specific case studies has helped to address such perceptions, as has practical decision making and problem solving approaches based on some ethical frameworks. However, a need exists for a wider range of creative methods in ethics education to help complement the variety of activities and learning experiences within the engineering curriculum. In this work, a novel approach is presented in which first-year undergraduate students are responsible for proposing ethics education activities of relevance to their peers and discipline area. The students are prepared for the task through a short introduction on engineering ethics, whereby generic frameworks for moral and professional conduct are discussed, and discipline and student-relevance contexts provided. The approach has been used in four departments of engineering at Imperial College London, and has led to the generation of many creative ideas for wider student engagement in ethics awareness, reflection and understanding. The paper presents information on the premise of the introductory sessions for supporting the design task, and an evaluation of the student experience of the course and task work. Examples of proposals are given to demonstrate the value of such an approach to teachers, and ultimately to the learning experiences of the students themselves.

Abstract:The engineering profession has experienced some ethical cases that were rarely reported, scrutinized, or discussed because: they did not necessarily represent violations of existing codes even if they breached ethical principles; those within the organization were not prepared to take steps to address the issues or impose sanction; an/or some of the personnel associated with these cases resorted to silence to avoid being labeled as trouble-makers in their organizations and, perhaps, more broadly, in society. The goal of this paper is to heighten managerial awareness of ethical issues, interrelated ethical lapses, and appropriate responsive actions within professional engineering communities. As such, the authors reviewed recent well-known professional and organizational ethical cases including impact of leadership role and existing standards, and critically analyzed interrelated literature. The paper's case studies exemplify that because ethical issues are complex, intricate, and nuanced; bylaws are insufficient for establishing the inclusive culture for handling potential ethical situations. In fact, through what is known as the codification of ethics, it is possible that someone's conduct can totally fulfill all professional responsibilities but still be unethical. As such, ethical leadership is needed to provide the means for establishing appropriate norms so as to set the proper structures for addressing the diverse ethical matters. Perceptions about the responses of leaders to potential ethical lapses are a critical factor in formulating, changing, and maintaining ethical values at the individual and organizational levels. A leader's passive attitude toward ethical issues can be the signal for the ignored lapses to become the norm at not only the organizational level but also the society. Guided by the new Code of Ethics by the American Society of Civil Engineers, this paper aims to trigger the proper ethical behavior and expectations for the welfare of the engineering profession both in the present and future.
