Abstract:Transpiration cooling with liquid phase change has proven great potential as an efficient heat dissipation approach in the cases with extreme high heat flux or tiny coolant availability. Water is widely used as the coolant due to the high specific heat and latent heat of phase change. However, the freezing point of water is relatively high while the boiling point is relatively low, resulting in a narrow application range of transpiration cooling with liquid water. To overcome this issue, a possible way to modify the coolant properties by additives is proposed and evaluated in this paper, and the novel transpiration cooling using modified coolant is experimentally investigated. The experiments were carried out in the heated gas wind tunnel at the University of Science and Technology of China, the cooling performances and working mechanism for four propylene glycol (PG) aqueous solutions respectively with PG concentration ? = 0, 0.3, 0.7 and 1 were analyzed. The results indicate that the addition of PG may be an effective way to alleviate the unfavorable phenomena existing in transpiration cooling with liquid water, such as lowering the freezing point, raising the boiling point, alleviating the oscillations of temperature and driving pressure, and improving the cooling uniformity.
