Abstract:Here, we introduce phase change mechanisms in lead-free piezoceramics as a strategy to utilize attendant volume change for harvesting large electrostrain. In the newly developed (K,Na)NbO3 solid-solution at the polymorphic phase boundary we combine atomic mapping of the local polar vector with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory to uncover the phase change and interpret its underlying nature. We demonstrate that an electric field-induced phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases triggers a dramatic volume change and contributes to a huge effective piezoelectric coefficient of 1250 pm V-1 along specific crystallographic directions. The existence of the phase transition is validated by a significant volume change evidenced by the simultaneous recording of macroscopic longitudinal and transverse strain. The principle of using phase transition to promote electrostrain provides broader design flexibility in the development of high-performance piezoelectric materials and opens the door for the discovery of high-performance future functional oxides.

Abstract:The phase structure in the (Ba,Ca)(Ti1−xSnx)O3 lead-free ceramics was evolved from inceptive orthorhombic (O) at 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.04 to a two-phase coexistence of pseudocubic-orthorhombic (PC-O) at 0.06 ≤ x ≤ 0.10 and further to a multiphase coexistence of rhombohedral-pseudocubic-orthorhombic (R-PC-O) at x = 0.11. Due to the multiphase coexistence of R-PC-O at room temperature proved by X-ray diffraction, dielectric constant εr and differential scanning calorimetry, an ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 670 pC/N and electrostrain 0.061% were achieved. The high d33 over 520 pC/N was stabilized in a wide compositional range of 0.07 ≤ x ≤ 0.11, suggesting that (Ba,Ca)(Ti,Sn)O3 ceramics are a promising candidate for the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.
Near stoichiometric lithium niobate crystal with dramatically enhanced piezoelectric performance for high temperature acceleration sensing

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) is a multifunctional crystal with excellent piezoelectric properties, making it a potential candidate for piezoelectric sensing applications. In this study, the mechanism of the discrepancies of piezoelectric properties between near stoichiometric lithium niobate (NSLN) and congruent lithium niobate (CLN) were probed using Raman spectrum, first principle calculations and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), where the 〖V Li -〗 defect demonstrated a significant impact on the distortion of the NbO6 octahedron, which in turn affected the piezoelectric properties of the LN crystal. Among them, NSLN crystal was found to exhibit strong piezoelectric performance. It was confirmed that the NSLN crystal exhibited strong piezoelectric coefficients d15 and d22 on the orders of 77.6 pC N-1 and 22.8 pC N-1, respectively, showing improvements of 17.4% and 18.1% over the CLN crystal, highlighting its enhanced piezoelectric characteristics. Finally, temperature dependent behaviours of the electro-elastic constants for the NSLN and CLN crystals were discussed. And the high temperature piezoelectric performance of NSLN crystal was evaluated utilizing a prototype of shear-mode acceleration sensor, demonstrating remarkable sensing performance up to 650 °C with good temperature stability (sensitivity variation <5%).

Abstract:High piezoelectricity of (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) lead‐free materials benefits from a polymorphic phase transition (PPT) around room temperature, but its temperature sensitivity has been a bottleneck impeding their applications. It is found that good thermal stability can be achieved in CaZrO3‐modified KNN lead‐free piezoceramics, in which the normalized strain d 33* almost keeps constant from room temperature up to 140 °C. In situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction experiments combined with permitivity measurements disclose the occurrence of a new phase transformation under an electrical field, which extends the transition range between tetragonal and orthorhombic phases. It is revealed that such an electrically enhanced diffused PPT contributed to the boosted thermal stability of KNN‐based lead‐free piezoceramics with high piezoelectricity. The present approach based on phase engineering should also be effective in endowing other lead‐free piezoelectrics with high piezoelectricity and good temperature stability.

Abstract:High-Curie temperature (T-C) piezoelectric ceramics 0.15Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.38PbHfO(3)-0.47PbTiO(3) (0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT) were fabricated via the citrate method, which shows pure perovskite structure. The ceramics have composition locating at the rhombohedral side around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), and present enhanced electrical properties as compared with those prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the columbite precursor technique. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy not only proves the occurrence of the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition around T-C, but also detects the successive phase symmetry transitions, which correlate with the polar nanoregions (PNRs) or the coexistence of multiple ferroelectric phases. Large quantities of fine stripe nanoscale ferroelectric domains are observed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) in the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics, which form the larger micron island domains. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra and PFM results indicate that the excellent dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the 0.15PMN-0.38PH-0.47PT ceramics can be attributed to either the existence of the PNRs with low symmetry or the multiple-ferroelectric-phases coexistence around room temperature and the fine stripe ferroelectric domains.

Abstract:Ca2Nb2O7 is a promising material for high-temperature piezoelectric applications due to its ultra-high Curie temperature, which makes it a suitable candidate for use in harsh environments. However, their piezoelectric performance needs improvement. Here, through chemical engineering methods, we have successfully grown Bi3+ doped Ca2Nb2O7 single crystals using the optical floating zone technique. The Ca1.94Bi0.06Nb2O7 single crystals achieved better high-temperature stability, transparency and a higher piezoelectric constant of 12.8 pC/N at 298 K and 20.0 pC/N at 660 K. In addition to the dopant effects, mechanisms for enhancing the piezoelectric properties of perovskite-like layer structure (PLS) materials have been identified, highlighting the significant contribution of the NbO6 octahedron and interlayer ions. These findings offers valuable insights into improving the performance of PLS materials, which is crucial for promoting their practical applications as high-temperature lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:The Ag-Pd internal electrode of multilayer piezoelectric ceramics need to be sintered below 1000 °C, and lead wires and components need to be welded with lead-free solder at 260 °C. PNN–PMW–PZT–xSr piezoelectric ceramics with high Curie temperature (Tc >260 °C) were synthesized at a low sintering temperature (960 °C) to meet the requirements of multilayer piezoelectric devices. The relationship between structures (phase, domain, and micro- structures) and electrical properties (piezo-/ferro- electric properties, and dielectric relaxation) in the Sr2+ substituted ceramics were investigated. Rietveld refinement and Raman spectra show that Sr2+ substitution can cause the phase change and increase the force constant of [BO6] octahedron. The piezoelectric response increases with increasing the content of the tetragonal phase (CTP) in the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) coexisted ceramics. The ceramics with 0.6 mol% Sr2+ substitution have minimum activation energy for domain wall movement (Ea) of 0.0362 eV which favors the formation of nanometer-sized domains, and possess excellent electrical properties (d33=623 pC/N, d33*=783 pm/V, Tc=295 °C). The higher the CTP, the lower the Ea. The lower Ea favors the rotation of polarization direction and extension, and is beneficial to the generation of the nanometer-size domains, resulting in high piezoelectric properties.

Abstract:An easy-to-use domain strategy by utilizing phase boundary design, chemical modification, and electric-field driving was employed to optimize strain and temperature stability of a polycrystalline ceramic. First, the effects of phase boundary, composition, and electric field on the domain were investigated in detail. Distinct spontaneous polarization rotation appears in various phase transition processes, inducing different evolution of domain structure and piezoresponse at elevated temperatures. Measurements reveal that the domain at the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary shows giant piezoresponse and high temperature stability. The structure origin is assigned to the slow degradation of spontaneous polarization, and the highly steady domain contribution stimulates excellent strain stability at the R-T phase boundary. Additionally, doped components significantly influenced domain stability, and boosted electric fields stabilized the piezoresponse of the domain. Second, modulating domain stability and its piezoresponse through tuning the phase boundary and driving field, as well as chemical modification, realized a large and temperature-insensitive strain fluctuation less than 3% at 23-80 degrees C) in (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This value is largely superior to that obtained from current lead-free piezoelectric materials and some soft lead-based counterparts, indicating a tremendous application potential for (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This study affords a significant guidance for designing lead-free piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability.
Influence of Phase Transitions on Electrostrictive and Piezoelectric Characteristics in PMN–30PT Single Crystals

Abstract:The ultrahigh electrostrain and piezoelectric constant (d33) in relaxor piezoelectric PMN–30PT single crystals are closely related to the coexistence and transition of multiple phases at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). However, the key mechanisms underlying the stability of the phases and their transitions are yet to be fully understood. In this work, we undertake a systematic study of the influences of phase transitions on the electrostrictive and piezoelectric behaviors in ⟨001⟩-, ⟨011⟩-, and ⟨111⟩-oriented PMN–30PT single crystals. We first classify the various phase transitions within the quasi-MPB in electric field–temperature phase diagrams as either dominated by the electric field or by temperature. We find that the electrostrain reaches a maximum at each phase transition, especially in the electric-field-dominated transitions, whereas d33 only peaks at specific phase transitions. In particular, the electrostrain in the ⟨001⟩ crystal reaches a maximum of S = 0.52% at 55 °C under an external electric field with E = 15 kV/cm, primarily due to a joint contribution of the electric field-dominated rhombohedral–monoclinic and monoclinic–tetragonal phase transitions at the quasi-MPB. An ultrahigh d33 (∼2460 pC/N) only occurs at the rhombohedral–monoclinic phase transition in the ⟨001⟩ crystal and at the rhombohedral–orthorhombic transition in the ⟨011⟩ crystal (d33 ∼ 1500 pC/N) due to the lower energy barriers. The temperature-dominated phase transitions also contribute toward minor peaks in electrostrain and/or d33. Enhanced Electric Field-Induced Strain Properties in Lead-Free BF-BT-Based Piezoceramics by Local Structure Inhomogeneity

Abstract:The piezoelectric strain coefficient d 33* always deteriorates rapidly with increasing temperature, which is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting practical applications of piezoelectric ceramics at high temperatures. Herein, we successfully prepared (1 – x)(0.7BFeO3-0.3Ba(Hf0.05Ti0.95)O3)-x(Bi0.2Sr0.7)TiO3 by the conventional solid-state method, which possessed a high piezoelectric strain coefficient of d 33* = 490 pm/V at 245 °C. In particular, d 33* is insensitive to the temperature range of 25 to 245 °C. Microstructure characterization and electrical performance measurements showed that the optimal piezoelectric strain coefficient and its excellent thermal stability are mainly attributed to combining freezing temperature T f with polar nanoregions (PNRs). Piezoelectric force microscopy showed the relaxor behavior, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of the Moiré fringe revealed the existence of PNRs. The conception and findings in this work will further push the practical application of BiFeO3-BaTiO3-based high-temperature piezoceramics.

Abstract:The intrinsic correlation and mechanism between electrical properties and phase transitions in alkaline niobate based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were explored by taking typical (Na 0.52 K 0.48− x )(Nb 0.95− x Ta 0.05 )O 3 -xLiSbO 3 compositions as a case study. The diffuseness of the phase transition leads to two-phase coexistence promoting piezoelectric activity and simultaneously induces remarkable temperature sensitivity, based on the variation of orthorhombic and tetragonal domains. The polymorphism, not a morphotropism of the phase boundary was considered as a structural root for these kinds of compositions. The refinement of compositions within two-phase coexistence zone compromises two opposite effects, although the composition range is narrow, suggesting the property sensitivity to the composition and a processing solution to the property optimization as well.
Normal-relaxor Ferroelectric Phase Transition Induced Morphotropic Phase Boundary Accompanied by Enhanced Piezoelectric and Electrostrain Properties in Strontium Modulated Bi0.5K0.5TiO3 Lead-Free Ceramics

Abstract:In this work, (Bi0.5K0.5)1-xSrxTiO3 compositions (x = 0.03∼0.18) are designed to clarify the role of normal-relaxor ferroelectric phase transition and morphotropic phase boundary on dielectric, piezoelectric and electrostrain properties. With increasing strontium content, tetragonal distortion decreases and tetragonal and pseudocubic phases coexist in 0.09 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 compositions; the spontaneous phase-transition temperature and curie temperature decrease, as certified by phase-structure, dielectric properties and Raman spectra analysis. Optimized piezoelectric constant ∼106 pC/N and electrostrain ∼0.17 % are obtained for (Bi0.5K0.5)0.88Sr0.12TiO3 composition. Piezoelectric force microscopic technique is exploited to clarify the origin of enhancement in macroscopic performances. Increase in temperature enhances ferroelectric performance and a large strain value ∼0.25 % with low hysteresis ∼27 % are obtained at 140 °C for the optimized composition, which are believed to originate from electric-field induced relaxor-to-ferroelectric phase transition with thermally-activated reduced energy barriers. This work clearly demonstrates that lead-free Bi0.5K0.5TiO3-based ceramics are another promising bismuth-based species in applications of piezoelectric sensors and actuators.
Phase Transition and Piezoelectric Response under Electric Field in PMN-PT Crystals

Abstract:The phase transition between the ferroelectric and relaxor states for (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) single crystals at low PT (x = 0.21) was identified using high-resolution X-ray diffraction. The characterization of the dielectric and pyroelectric currents determined the properties of the polar state. The temperature stability region of the polar phase was enlarged with increasing bias field, and the corresponding polarization and piezoelectric properties were enhanced. Non-linearity of the electric displacement and loss under high ac fields was investigated by laser interferometry at a frequency of 40 kHz well below the resonant frequency. A linear displacement was obtained up to a large alternating current-field of 125 V/mm with an almost negligible second order harmonic component. The optimal d(33) improvement was 1,339 pm/V found for the [001] orientation. Such disclosure of phase stability and enhanced performances under high external field will be useful to determine their practical applications for resonant power transducers and quasi-static actuators.
Composition-driven Phase Transition and Structural Origin of High Piezoresponse in KNN-based Ceramics

Abstract:The piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling coefficients in conjunction with their temperature stability are the crucial figure-of-merits of piezoelectric materials, due to these properties determine their response sensitivity and operating temperature range, respectively for practical applications. In this work, Sb, (Bi0.5Na0.5)ZrO3, and (Bi0.5K0.5)HfO3 were used to regulate phase transition of KNN-based ceramics, and resultant large piezoelectric constants d33 ∼ 430 ± 10 pC/N, unipolar strain Suni ∼ 0.18% at 40 kV/cm, and a high planar electromechanical coupling factor kp ∼ 55% were observed in the composition with rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence. Ex-situ electric field XRD measurement and TEM observation indicate the outstanding piezoelectric properties are originated from the electric field-induced phase transition, nanodomains and polar nanoregions, which lower polarization anisotropy and facilitate polarization rotation between different crystallographic symmetries. In addition, the piezoelectric properties of the samples with R-O-T phases coexistence show superior temperature stability and fatigue resistance after 106 bipolar electric cycles. The present study not only helps to understand the structural origin of high piezoresponse, but also lays a foundation for the applications of KNN-based ceramics.
Role of tetragonal distortion on domain switching and lattice strain of piezoelectrics by in-situ synchrotron diffraction

Abstract:The tetragonal phase is an indispensable component that plays an important role in forming the morphotropic phase boundary. Herein, the piezoelectric behaviors are systematically investigated in various Pb/Bi-based tetragonal piezoelectric systems as a function of tetragonal distortion using in-situ high-energy synchrotron diffraction. It is found that the tetragonal distortion has a significant influence on piezoelectric properties through constraining the domain switching. Specifically, a critical value of (c/a-1) ≈ 1.5 % is identified, below which the domain switching is significantly activated. The correlation between piezoelectric performance and the cooperative contribution of tetragonal distortion and domain switching has been established: Reducing tetragonal distortion and activating domain switching can enhance the piezoelectric coefficient. Furthermore, an approximate linear coupling between domain switching and lattice strain is confirmed in tetragonal piezoelectric systems. Insights from this work would facilitate the design of high-performance piezoelectrics, by controlling tetragonal distortion and domain switching.

Abstract:For relaxor ferroelectric materials, improving the piezoelectric properties and temperature stability simultaneously is still a great challenge up to now. In this work, the structure, electric properties and thermal stability of xPSN-(1-x)PMN-0.4PT (x = 0.15, 0.29, 0.43 and 0.5) ceramics were studied systematacally by experiment and phase field simulation. A high Curie temperature Tc of 255 ℃ and good longitudinal electricmechanical coupling factor k33 of 0.75 and piezoelectric constant d33 of 650 pC/N are achieved in x = 0.43 ceramics with monoclinic C and tetragonal phases coexistence at room temperature. At 30 ℃, this composition ceramics sintered at 1260 ℃ shows the remnant polarization Pr and coercive field Ec are about 36.8 µC/cm2 and 8.2 kV/cm, respectively. Moreover, as the temperature increases to 150 ℃, these values remain as high as 22.6 µC/cm2 and 5.7 kV/cm. In the temperature range of 30 to 230 ℃, the variation of k33 and d33 is about 24% and 25%. These high piezoelectric performance and superior temperature stability are related to the more complex domain structures caused by phase coexistence and larger grains with more stable domain structure due to internal stress. The former is beneficial to improving the piezoelectric properties, and the latter dominates the enhanced temperature stability.

Abstract:Lead‐based Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3‐Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (PZN–PZT) piezoelectric ceramics have been intensively studied owing to their excellent performance in multilayer actuators; however, the detailed crystal structure and actuation mechanisms are still not well understood. In this study, in situ electric field‐biasing high‐energy synchrotron X‐ray diffraction was employed to monitor the crystal structure evolution and to deconvolute contributions to the electrostrain in the morphotropic phase boundary composition of 0.3PZN‐0.7PZT. An electric field‐induced reversible phase transition between the coexisting monoclinic and tetragonal phases was identified. The unit cell parameters of the monoclinic phase exhibit significantly greater response to the electric field than those of the tetragonal phase. The effective lattice strain, evaluated through peak profile fitting, and the macroscopic strain measurement were found to be in agreement. The high electrostrain is primarily caused by the electric‐field‐induced phase transition with concurrent intrinsic/extrinsic contributions. This work provides a deeper description of the crystal structure and actuation mechanisms in PZN–PZT piezoelectric systems.

Abstract:The design of the composition and adjustment of multicomponents to achieve a high chemical disorder are the important strategies for obtaining high piezoelectricity at a high depolarization temperature, which is conducive to a wide range of electromechanical applications. Here, the solid-state reaction method is used to prepare PZT-based piezoelectric ceramics; the replacement of A/B site ions by multielements flattens the ferroelectric free energy, which realized the high piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of similar to 1000 pC/N at a good Curie temperature T-C of 128 degrees C and the depolarization temperature TFE-FE of 105 degrees C. The microstructure of the ferroelectric phase and ferroelectric domain is systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The atomic-scale substitutions of the A/B site-disordered elements break the long-range polarization order with the accompanied Pb vacancies. The excess Ni2+ ions can regulate the grain growth, and the valence of Sb changed from Sb3+ to Sb-,(5+) which is able to induce Pb2+ vacancies. These synergistic effects of grain size and vacancy structure optimize the piezoelectric properties and temperature stability.

Abstract:The phase transition temperatures of CaZrO3‐doped (Na0.49K0.49Li0.02)(Nb0.8Ta0.2)O3 lead‐free piezoelectrics (LKNNT‐CZ5) have been studied with X‐ray diffraction and Raman scattering. It is found that LKNNT‐CZ5 ceramics and powders with the same crystallite size (~2–5 μm) exhibit distinctly different phase transition behaviors versus temperature. The ceramic bulk changes its orthorhombic phase to tetragonal structure abruptly after being pulverized to powders at room temperature(RT), and follows a phase transition sequence with increasing temperature: orthorhombic (RT–65°C), orthorhombic and tetragonal (65°C–105°C), and tetragonal phase (105°C to ~220°C). Contrastively, the powders hold a tetragonal structure without any phase transition within the whole temperature region (RT–220°C). These differences might be induced by the existing internal stress or residual strain, which could be released during the grinding process.

Abstract:Tuning the lattice degree of freedom in nanoscale functional crystals is critical to exploit the emerging functionalities such as piezoelectricity, shape-memory effect, or piezomagnetism, which are attributed to the intrinsic lattice-polar or lattice-spin coupling. Here it is reported that a mechanical probe can be a dynamic tool to switch the ferroic orders at the nanoscale multiferroic phase boundaries in BiFeO3 with a phase mixture, where the material can be reversibly transformed between the soft tetragonal-like and the hard rhombohedral-like structures. The microscopic origin of the nonvolatile mechanical switching of the multiferroic phase boundaries, coupled with a reversible 180 degrees rotation of the in-plane ferroelectric polarization, is the nanoscale pressure-induced elastic deformation and reconstruction of the spontaneous strain gradient across the multiferroic phase boundaries. The reversible control of the room-temperature multiple ferroic orders using a pure mechanical stimulus may bring us a new pathway to achieve the potential energy conversion and sensing applications.
