Abstract:There have been a great number of papers concerning the linear theory of electron cyclotron resonance maser 1-6. The previous studies, however, have been limited or idealized in one respect or another. In this paper the general linear theory of gyromonotron is given with it's concrete application.

Abstract:The linear theory of electrostatic electron cyclotron resonance maser (EECRM) is given in this paper. Starting from the fundamental concept, we obtained the perturbed equation of relativistic electron motion in an electrostatic centrifugal system, and the dispersion equation for both TEmn and TMmn modes of the EECRM have been derived with detailed discussion for the infinitely thin beam layer. The nonrelativistic case has also been studied. Digital calculations show that the dispersion curves of the EECRM are similar in shape to that of the conventional electron cyclotron resonance maser (MECRM) and the magnitude of growth rate of the EECRM is comparable with that of MECRM. Although the dispersion equation of EECRM contains a special kind of singularity [ω−k∥v∥−(m±(2−β2⊥)1/2) ω0 =0], the relevant instability within the parameter region of our calculations in this paper has not yet been found; this problem remains to be studied in the future.

Abstract:Gyrotron devices are based on the principle of the relativistic electron cyclotron maser and capable of generating high-power coherent radiation in the millimeter-THz wave range, which are important in imaging, communication, biomedicine. However, traditional particle-in-cell software, simulating the beam-wave interaction of terahertz gyrotron devices, is of huge resource consumption due to massive particles and grid-size dependency of wavelength. Specialized theories need to be developed. In this paper, frequency-domain and time-domain nonlinear theories are introduced. Based on macro-particle assumption and 1-D analytic approximation, the resource consumption is dramatically reduced. The results of two theories coincide with each other. The accuracy of simulation result is demonstrated by comparison with particle-in-cell software. The investigation presented in this paper provides efficient and accurate method to analyze the terahertz gyrotron devices.

Abstract:The kinetic theory of the electron cyclotron resonance maser is given in this paper with the space charge effect and non-resonance cyclotron harmonics taken into consideration. The dispersion equations have been calculated using a digital computer and the influence of these factors are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Self consistent nonlinear theory is applied to analyze the large orbit magnetron-type gyrotron in detail; many calculations are carried under different cavity dimensions and electron beam parameters. The influence of electron beam thickness and output structure is taken into consideration. Dimensions of a 16 slot, 35 GHz, 8th harmonic tube are given.

Abstract:The linear growth rate of an electron cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM) with a phase filter, constructed by imposing a transverse magnetostatic wiggler, is derived from relativistic kinetic theory. The theoretical results confirm previous findings from computer simulation showing substantial enhancement of the growth rate near the autoresonance condition. This theory provides an additional, more readily accessible tool for designing a novel phase filter-assisted CARM. The mathematical formalism developed to treat the complex electron motion in this device is introduced.

Abstract:The theoretical study on the electron beam-wave interactions in a plasma waveguide immersed in a finite magnetic field is given in the article, in which both the plasma and the electron beam are considered as special media. Making use of the constitutive transformation and the Lorentz transformation in the four-dimensional space, the permittivity tensor of the stationary magnetized plasma, the permittivity tensor, the permeability tensor, and the chiral tensor of the electron beam in the rest (laboratory) frame are acquired. Therefore, two coupled wave equations for the magnetized plasma and electron beam have been obtained and the dispersion relations are then achieved by solving these coupled equations together with the boundary conditions including the surface current density due to the ripple of the plasma/beam. As an example of the applications of this approach, the beam-wave interactions in a practical plasma Cherenkov maser have been studied and the numerical calculations have been carried out in detail. It has been found that the present approach is more accurate and can provide clearer mode information for the electron beam-wave interactions in a magnetized plasma waveguide. This approach can be exploited in a number of electron beam-wave interaction systems including some kinds of free electron devices, plasma filled Cherenkov radiated free electron lasers and masers. Abstract:The nonlinear dynamics of an initially rectilinear electron beam interacting with a retarded transverse circularly polarized electromagnetic wave under the condition of anomalous Doppler effect has been studied. The physical mechanism of the interaction is presented, and nonlinear ordinary equations for electron energy evolutions have been derived and discussed. The numerical calculations show that the interaction efficiency can be very high. The results are of great importance for the design of practical devices. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Based on the linear theory of gyrotron, and using the Laplace transformation and residue theorem, the kinetic theory of a novel gyrotron with three-mirror quasi-optical cavity is developed within the framework of the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations. The beam-wave interaction power, frequency shift and starting current have been derived and numerically calculated. The results indicate that this novel gyrotron has high interaction power when operating at high cyclotron harmonics, and has potential application in THZ band.

Abstract:In this paper,we develop a numerical model of electron cyclotron emission in three-dimensional Yee grid model, combine the FDTD algorithm to simulate electron cyclotron maser, and use the MPI parallel lgorithms to drastically reduce cmputation time. Finally, we simulate a 94GHZ Gyrotron oscillator, and verify its correctness through spectrum, power, operating mode.

Abstract:The coaxial gyrotron with two electron beams (CGTB) is proposed and investigated in this paper. This paper consists of two parts: the linear theory and nonlinear theory of CGTB are presented in part I and the investigation on the dual frequency operation, a special operation state of CGTB, is given in part II. The magnetron injection gun with two electron beams has been developed, and simulations show that it may work well. It may guarantee that both the electric potential and the ratio of vertical to longitudinal velocities of two electron beams are equal. The results of the calculation show that CGTB has some distinguished advantages: mode competition is improved and output power is enhanced. Thus CGTB may be capable of providing 2-4 MW continuous-wave (CW) at 170 GHz to meet the demand of very high radio frequency CW power 1-2 MW in the ITER [ITER EDA Agreement and Protocol 2 (IAEA, Vienna, 1994)] program and other applications. Abstract:A systematic formalism for investigating linear electromagnetic perturbations in general magnetic field configurations is developed. The formalism employs the small adiabaticity parameter rho /L0 and is valid for arbitrary frequencies. Here, rho and L0 are, respectively, the Larmor radius and equilibrium scale length. Effects associated with plasma and magnetic field inhomogeneities as well as finite Larmor radii are contained. The specific case of axisymmetric Tokamaks is then considered to illustrate the potential application.
On the Theory of Electron Beam-Wave Interactions in a Magnetized Plasma Waveguids

Abstract:In a magnetized plasma waveguide, the TE mode and the TM mode are always coupled each other. This makes the electron beam-wave interactions much more complicated. Even though, theoretical and experimental studies have been carried on very actively during the past years. Paper presented a Basic Theoretical Formulations on the electron beam-wave interactions by means of the Applied field approximation, paper gave a linear theory based on the dielectric tensor for both the electron beam and the plasma, while in paper based on the Lorentz transformation and the Constitutive transformation in the Minkovsky space, a novel approach of the theory was worked out. An experimental study on a plasma filled Cherenkov radiation device has been carried out in [5]. A report of detailed comparison of the theories and the experiment is presented in this paper. The comparison shows that the novel theoretical approach gives correct and more accurate agreement with the results of the experiment.

Abstract:A novel quasi-optical resonance system - modified axisymmetrical quasi-optical cavity of oblique rotation (MAQCOR) - is proposed. Using the Laplace integral transformation, the kinetic theory of the high relativistic electron cyclotron maser with MAQCOR is carried out within the framework of the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations. The formulas of beam-wave interaction power, starting current and frequency shift have been derived. Some important problem, such as high-order harmonic, modes competition, influence of the rotating angle and space-charge effect are analyzed and discussed in detail, and a series of new conclusions are obtained. A theoretical basis is laid for the design of this novel quasi-optical gyrotron.

Abstract:Gyromonotrons are typically believed to rely on the convective interaction between the co-propagating beam and wave, with the extended energy-exchanging process stemming from the external feedback. However, numerous studies focusing on both transverse electric (TE) mode and transverse magnetic (TM) mode gyrotrons have consistently shown that beam–wave interactions in weak-feedback systems or even in uniform tubes without any structural feedback can yield a theoretical beam efficiency of more than 30% with major forward-wave output during near-cutoff operation, which is the typical operating condition for gyromonotrons. These intriguing findings raise questions about the actual feedback mechanism of gyromonotrons. In this article, comparative studies on the linear and nonlinear behaviors of uniform-tube gyrotron are investigated. The forward and backward waves are observed to co-generate and exhibit similar characteristics of ultra-slow group velocity under near-cutoff operation. This situation allows the as-generated forward wave to modulate the fresh beam, establishing a new backward-wave-like internal feedback loop. Additionally, the quasi-degenerate nature of the bi-directional propagating waves ensures their intrinsic in-phase relationship. The consequent constructive interference enables the uniform tube to function as a high-Q resonator. These findings are found to be independent of the choices of TE or TM modes, providing valuable insights into the underlying interaction mechanism of gyrotron devices.

Abstract:A novel gyrotron RF structure operating at a substantially reduced magnetic field is proposed. The cavity consists of multiconductors distributed around a circle, with or without an inner conductor. The multiconductor, which is a slotted cylindrical metal shell, has the effect of creating a strong harmonic field near the electron orbits and, as a result, greatly reducing the beam voltage for harmonic operation. The efficiency of the field-electron interaction is examined numerically. For fifth and sixth harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency, a maximum overall efficiency of 15·2% and 14·2%, respectively, has been calculated
