Abstract:The fluid-kinetic hybrid electron model for global electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle simulations has been formulated in toroidal geometry using magnetic coordinates, providing the capabilities to describe low frequency processes in electromagnetic turbulence with electron dynamics. In the limit of long wavelength and no parallel electric field our equations reduce to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. The formulation has been generalized to include equilibrium flows. The equations for zonal components of electrostatic and vector potentials have been derived, demonstrating the electron screening of the zonal vector potential.

Abstract:Global neoclassical simulations of a model equilibrium of the W7-X stellarator find an ambipolar electric field with either an ion root or an electron root solution depending on the temperature ratio between electrons and ions. The ambipolar electric field is then used as an equilibrium field in the turbulence simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability. The shear of the ambipolar electric field has modest effects on the ITG linear instability, nonlinear saturation amplitude, and turbulent transport in the ion root case. However, in the electron root case, the ambipolar electric field significantly reduces the linear ITG growth rate, turbulence intensity, and radial correlation length, resulting in an ion heat conductivity comparable to the neoclassical transport level in the strong shear region.

Abstract:This paper, based on the finite element computation by using a dynamic model coupled with the equations of external electric circuits, analyzes the transient magnetic field distribution and the corresponding engineering parameters of EMS maglev vehicle. To avoid the airgap mesh distortion caused by the movement of the rotor, moving boundaries are introduced in the airgap. Finally, an example is given to check the engineering feasibility and correctness.

Abstract:We present a new model for simulating the electromagnetic fluctuations with frequencies much lower than the ion cyclotron frequency in plasmas confined in general magnetic configurations. This novel model (termed as GK-E&B) employs nonlinear gyrokinetic equations formulated in terms of electromagnetic fields along with momentum balance equations for solving fields. It, thus, not only includes kinetic effects, such as wave-particle interaction and microscopic (ion Larmor radius scale) physics; but also is computationally more efficient than the conventional formulation described in terms of potentials. As a benchmark, we perform linear as well as nonlinear simulations of the kinetic Alfven wave; demonstrating physics in agreement with the analytical theories.

Abstract:Precise particle control is crucial to the development of In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) devices on the Moon and Mars. The electrostatic method becomes a promising particle control method for the high-vacuum and low-gravity extraterrestrial conditions. In this paper, the dynamics of particle transport by an alternating four-phase travelling-wave electrostatic field is numerically investigated. The discrete element method (DEM) is used for modeling particles' behaviors, and the distribution of electric field is simulated by the finite element method (FEM). The electrostatic force is exerted on each particle at a mesoscopic level and the interaction forces between particles are carefully included. The simulation is validated with existing experimental results, the detailed particle trajectories and macroscopic phenomena, such as particle ensemble transport mode, transport direction and leap heights, are explained by the force analysis in the simulation. The results show that particle transport direction is independent of particle charge polarities. Particle transport velocity and the changes of electrodes’ polarities should be designed in conjunction with each other for particle directed transport. Comparing with the particle forward transport for low excitation frequency, the backward transport of particle under higher frequency conditions could be adopted to realize much faster and more smooth particle directed transport.
Dynamics of Conductive and Nonconductive Particles under High-Voltage Electrostatic Coupling Fields

Abstract:With the high-voltage electrostatic theory and numerical analysis, the dynamics of conductive and nonconductive particles under high-voltage electrostatic coupling fields was studied. The oscillation behavior of the conductive particle between the corona electrode and ground electrode was analyzed and its oscillation amplitude was Sm=(t a +t s ) · vm/2. It was found that there was the “lift-off voltage (Ulo)” for the conductive particle between the electrostatic electrode and ground electrode. The concepts of “critical charged rotational speed (n*)”, “detaching critical rotational speed of nonconductive particle (n′)” and “ratio of voltage and distance between surface of electrodes (U/D)” were presented and their criteria were established. The trajectories of the conductive particles under the coupling fields of the corona electrode, electrostatic electrode and ground electrode were simulated by the computer. The simulative results were in good agreement with the experimental ones. This research enriches the high-voltage electrostatic theory and provides a theoretic basis for optimization of operating parameters and structure design of high-voltage electrostatic separator.

Abstract:The progress and characteristics of initial stage of gas discharge is studied in this paper by numerical simulation. A program based on the FE-FCT method in its full two-dimension form is developed and employed for the solution of transport equations of charged species under the effect of space-charge electric field. The initial stage of gas discharge between parallel plate electrodes, including the development of avalanche and progression of Townsend or streamer discharge are presented. The influences of length of gap and applied electric field on the mechanism and process of breakdown are analyzed and the breakdown voltage and formative time of discharge axe predicted by the numerical method, and is well agree with the experimental result. The actions of cathode secondary emission on discharge are investigated, and photoemission is found to be more efficient than ion-electron emission.

Abstract:A two-dimensional (2-D) magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model of free expansion interelectrode plasma of vacuum arc is developed. The model is solved by numerical method and an iteration strategy with the position of free boundary (FB) taken into account. Under various radial distributions of axial magnetic field (AMF), uniform AMF, saddle shaped AMF, and bell shaped AMF, we got self-consistent results, by which we have studied the influence of radial AMF distribution on vacuum arc.

Abstract:The collimated electron jets ejected from cylindrical plasma are produced in particle-in-cell simulation under the applied longitudinal magnetostatic field and radial electrostatic field, which is a process that can be conveniently performed in a laboratory. We find that the applied magnetostatic field contributes significantly to the jet collimation, whereas the applied electrostatic field plays a vital role in the jet formation. The generation mechanism of collimated jets can be well understood through energy gain of the tagged electrons, and we conclude that the longitudinal momentum of the electrons is converted from the transverse momentum via the transverse-induced magnetic field. It has been found that the ejecting velocity of the jets is close to the speed of light when the applied electrostatic field reaches 3 x 10(10) Vim. The present scheme may also give us an insight into the formation of astrophysical jets in celestial bodies.

Abstract:In this paper,we develop a numerical model of electron cyclotron emission in three-dimensional Yee grid model, combine the FDTD algorithm to simulate electron cyclotron maser, and use the MPI parallel lgorithms to drastically reduce cmputation time. Finally, we simulate a 94GHZ Gyrotron oscillator, and verify its correctness through spectrum, power, operating mode.

Abstract:This paper introduces a method for simulating the space-charge-limited current and thermal cavity anode current of a thermionic cathode emission magnetron using a particle tracking solver. The particle tracking solver enables the simulation and analysis of the space-charge-limited current in the magnetron, which increases with anode voltage. The simulated trends of the space-charge-limited current in the magnetron match closely with experimental and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, by applying a 4 kV electric field, 0.17 T magnetic field, and 2.6 GHz intrinsic mode electric field, a combined simulation determines the thermal cavity anode current of the magnetron in its operational state to be 0.61 A, with particle trajectories resembling the spokes of a π-mode oscillation. This simulation approach provides a method for studying the space-charge-limited current and thermal cavity anode current of magnetrons.

Abstract:In this paper, we have obtained the equations of electrodynamics for a gyrotropic medium using the Maxwell's equations. Through the Fourier Transforms (FT), the admittances of TM and TE modes in the electrically gyrotropic substrate and the magnetically gyrotropic substrate are given. Then we can use the spectral domain immittance approach to analyse the finline structures with a gyrotropic medium. The propating characteristics of the dominant mode in magnetized-ferrite-loaded double-layered finlines are studied, numerical results are presented which could be used in designing a finline displacement isolator.

Abstract:To get the magnetic field distribution for beam dynamics calculation in the (100 MeV) compact cyclotron featured with a complex geometric magnet, we simplified the magnet structure and used various 3D finite element meshing methods in the initial design stage. After the results comparison by different meshing methods, we analysed numerically the three dimentional magnetic field and found that this 3D finite element calculation process could meet the requirement of the physics design for 100 MeV compact cyclotron.

Abstract:The relativistic annular electron beam guided by a finite axial magnetic field is studied in this paper, in which the electron beam is considered as a special media. Making use of the constitutive transformation and the Lorentz transformation in the four-dimensional space, the permittivity tensor of the stationary magnetized plasma, the permittivity tensor, the permeability tensor and the chiral tensor of the electron beam in the rest ( laboratory) frame are acquired. And the boundary conditions, including the surface current density due to the ripple of the beam, have been obtained. As an example of the applications of this approach, the dispersion relations of a relativistic annular electron beam guided by a finite axial magnetic field in a waveguide has been studied. The results of numerical calculation show that the present approach is more accurate and can provide clearer mode information for the electron beam. In addition, the results also show the axial magnetic field can affect the dispersion curves of space charge wave via the surface current density of an electron beam. Thus this approach can be exploited in a number of electron beam-wave interaction systems, including some kinds of free electron devices, plasma filled Cherenkov radiated free electron lasers and masers.
Electrostatic Force on Particle near Spacer in Inhomogeneous Electric Field between Diverging Electrodes

Abstract:Computing model of electrostatic force acting on a free conducting particle near spacer in inhomogeneous field distributing between diverging electrodes is built. The electrostatic force on a particle is evaluated by computing the Maxwell stress tensor around the 2-D particle model surface through FEM (Finite Element Method). The tilt angle of high voltage electrode, materials and shape of spacer is varied to analyze the factors influencing on the motion of conducting particle. The results show that the upward electrostatic force and horizontal electrostatic force towards spacer on particle lying on the grounded electrode can be decrease by decreasing the tilt angle of high voltage electrode and permittivity of spacer materials and shaping the spacer outline properly. So the probability of levitation and approaching to the spacer can be debased, and the methods can be used to improve the insulation reliability of GIS.

Abstract:A scheme for investigating linear electrostatic waves in general magnetically confined plasmas is presented. The scheme is a generalization of the low-frequency (less than the cyclotron frequency) gyrokinetic formalism of Rutherford and Frieman as well as Taylor and Hastie to arbitrary frequencies. Governing integral wave equations for slab plasmas with magnetic shear as well as axisymmetric tokamaks are then derived to illustrate the applications.

Abstract:<p>The electron dynamics in uniform magnetized capacitively coupled plasmas are investigated by using a one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation with a Monte Carlo collision model. It is found that the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of electrons are slightly modulated at weak magnetic fields, with more electron beams appearing during one sheath expansion. The electron beams are reversed before reaching the opposite electrode at moderate magnetic fields under the effect of Lorentz force. The discharge becomes very localized at very high magnetic fields, as the energetic electrons are confined in the vicinity of the sheath edge. The nonlocal to local transition of discharge characteristics is induced at different magnetic fields for various discharge frequencies. Generally, the discharge transition happens at stronger magnetic fields for high-discharge frequencies. A quantitative relation between the discharge frequency and cyclotron frequency is given for the discharge transition.</p>

Generation of Plasma Current under Arbitrary Strong Direct Current Electric Field

Abstract:The generation of plasma current and the evolution of electron distribution under arbitrarily strong direct current electric fields have been studied by Fokker-Planck simulation. It is found that the behaviors of plasma are different under different fields: in the weak field, Spitzer's law is suitable for describing the relationship between plasma current and electric field, and the response time to generate current is approximately equal to the relaxation time to reduce current after switching off the electric field; in the moderate field, the electron distribution is well represented by the sum of a stationary and drifting Maxwellian, and the relaxation time is much longer than the response time. According to the detailed knowledge of electron distributions, a set of hydrodynamic-like equations, similar to Spitzer's but without the weak-field limit, is given for calculating the current. It is more suitable for application in hybrid particle-in-cell simulations.
