Abstract:A multiple-aperture holographic imaging system and its data processing method are presented. A four-aperture imaging configuration is implemented. A high-resolution image is synthesized by the accurate co-phasing, improving the resolution by about 1.9 times.

Abstract:The resolution of reconstructed images is significantly limited by the size of captured holograms in digital holography. A multiplane digital holographic algorithm based on extrapolation iterations is proposed herein. Holograms at different axial distances are captured with a shifting imaging sensor and then extrapolated to a larger hologram after padding. Multiple holograms provide multipoint constraints in diffraction calculation. Constraints based on the energy distribution and transmissions of an object are applied to extract the object function from the holograms. The method achieves a higher convergence speed for solving the inverse problem compared with the single-plane extrapolation method. We demonstrate that the reconstruction in multiple planes yields a better resolution than that in one plane.

Abstract:Holographic techniques enable precise laser manipulation, but suffer from two considerable limitations: speckle and deterioration of axial distribution. Here, we propose a cylindrical quadratic phase (CQP) method with temporal focusing (TF) to generate speckle-free holographic illumination with high axial resolution. TF-CQP utilizes a superposed cylindrical phase as the initial guess to iteratively optimize phase hologram, realizing speckle-free holographic reconstruction on the target focal plane and eliminating secondary focus on the defocused planes. TF-CQP further disperses defocused beams symmetrically by a blazed grating, placed conjugate to the focal plane, which enhances axial confinement. Simulation and experimental results show that TF-CQP reconstructs speckle-free illumination with arbitrary shapes and <10 µm axial resolution. Compared to TF-GS (Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm), widely used in holographic optogenetics, TF-CQP shows increased uniformity of 200% and improved modulation efficiency of 32.33% for parallel holographic illumination, as well as a 10% increment in axial resolution.

Abstract:Based on super-resolution imaging theory, a beam scanning super-resolution digital holographic technique is proposed. Applying Fresnel diffraction theory, this technique is proved to enlarge the equivalent dimension of CCD and increase the cutoff frequency of optical system, so this method can improve the imaging resolution of digital holography. The simulation verify the validity and feasibility of this method. The method of hologram processing and reconstruction is summarized. Compared with synthetic-aperture digital holography, the proposed technique needs not to move CCD camera and change the angle of reference waves that correspond to different CCD camera position for avoiding under-sampling.

Abstract:To apply digital holography to the measurement of three-dimensional dense particle fields in large facilities, we have developed a hybrid digital holographic particle-imaging system. The technique combines the advantages of off-axis (side) scattering in suppressing speckle noise and on-axis (in-line) recording in lowering the digital sensor resolution requirement. A camera lens is attached to the digital sensor to compensate for the weak object wave from side scattering over a large recording distance. A simple numerical reconstruction algorithm is developed for holograms recorded with a lens without requiring complex and impractical mathematical corrections. We analyze the effect of image sensor resolution and off-axis angle on system performance and quantify the particle positioning accuracy of the system. The holographic system is successfully applied to the study of inertial particle clustering in isotropic turbulence.
Multi-channel Multiplexing Digital Holographic Imaging for High Throughput

Abstract:Optical imaging has become the dominant method for characterizing information in biological systems. The rapid, non-destructive and comprehensive characterization of biological samples in recent years has placed high demands on the resolvable volume of imaging systems. Digital holography records an entire complex wavefront including both the amplitude and phase of the light field by interference imaging. Due to fast, non-destructive, and 3D imaging abilities, digital holography has been used in numerous applications such as digital pathology, label-free observation and real-time monitoring of in vitro cells. First, this paper introduces the main ways to achieve high-throughput imaging, and analyzes the advantages of digital holography and the evolution of spatial bandwidth. Secondly, a theoretical framework for high-throughput multi-channel multiplexing digital holography based on the Hilbert transform is presented. Then, an extended field of view digital holographic microscope is introduced based on this theoretical framework. Experimental results indicate that the system achieves 8 times the space-bandwidth product higher than that of conventional off-axis holographic microscopes without sacrificing spatial and temporal resolution. This highthroughput digital holographic multiplexing technology can make full use of the redundant spatial bandwidth of single intensity image, which verifies the feasibility of high-throughput multi-channel multiplexing digital holography.

Abstract:To make full use of the spatial bandwidth product of imaging systems, grating based single-shot digital lens-free holography with spatial spectrum multiplexing is proposed. Multiple object waves are generated by a one-dimensional grating which is placed in near contact with the object to avoid the crosstalk among different diffraction orders during reconstruction. A multiplexed off-axis hologram is created by interference between the object waves and reference wave and captured by an image sensor in one shot. Multiple imaging areas corresponding to the captured object waves can be simultaneously retrieved during reconstruction, which is equivalent to increase the imaging area. A formula which guarantees accurate full FOV imaging without crosstalk or information loss is presented. The imaging experiments of a USAF resolution target are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Volume holographic imaging system (VHIS) incorporates a volume hologram grating (VHG) as the critical optical field processing component in a new imaging system.High spectral resolution and high sensitivity in obtaining 3D information at multi-depths are achieved without time consuming scanning mechanism and complex reconstruction algorithms by utilizing the Bragg diffraction selectivity and degeneracy properties.We briefly introduced the system structures and principles,then we presented intensively on how these VHGs were devised and VHIS were configured into the qualified spectral VHIS (S-VHIS) and multiplexed VHG imaging systems.The superiorities over conventional imaging systems and the features to be improved of VHIS were summarized and discussed.

Abstract:A new synchronous multi-channel phase-shifting holography, which is suitable for dynamic imaging of three-dimensional (3D) objects, is proposed by analyzing the theory of phase-shifting digital holography. The reference beam, which has continuous 90-degree phase delay on the free space, interferes with optical field of laser diffraction through object. Multi-frame holograms are taken by using the balanced detector system which is comprised of four cameras. The information of 3D object is reconstructed based on Fresnel and Fourier optical principles. Simulation and experimental results show that single-shot phase-shifting digital holography has been achieved, synchronous multi-channel can be used for real-time measurement of dynamic objects, a large number of simultaneous multi-frame images improve the quality of the image.
High Bandwidth‐Utilization Digital Holographic Multiplexing: an Approach Using Kramers–Kronig Relations

Abstract:Modern quantitative optical imaging is developing toward high throughput and powerful data processing capabilities. Holography is a powerful technique to characterize quantitative phase delays introduced by light–matter interactions. The spatial bandwidth utilization of imaging sensors in digital holography can be expanded via an off‐axis multiplexing technique, which is a powerful tool for high‐throughput quantitative optical imaging. However, the highest bandwidth utilization of sensor is limited at 58.9% to keep the signal spectra away from the zeroth spectra. Kramers–Kronig relation is introduced into the off‐axis multiplexing technology to allow for the overlapping between the signal spectra and unwanted spectra. The bandwidth utilization of sensor in a diffraction‐limited optical system can reach 78.5% in one hologram. It opens a new route to multiplexing quantitative optical imaging and helps to improve the performance of iterative‐free and constraint‐free modern optical microscopes in various spectral regimes.
Faithful Digital Holographic Reconstruction Using a Sparse Sensor Array

Abstract:The resolution and accuracy of the reconstruction are greatly limited by the field of hologram (FOH) in digital holography. Multi-apertures sampling in the hologram plane can achieve a large FOH. Sparse sensor aperture array uses the synthetic method to achieve higher spatial resolution than any single aperture, which can be used to a large-size scene imaging. However, accurate reconstruction is substantially degraded when there is a large gap between apertures. As a result, the entire scene could not be recovered from FOH. We present a self-restoration method that restores for gaps between sparse apertures. Constraints based on the object energy distribution and absorption characteristics are applied to extract the object function from existing defective reconstruction with a gap. The lost diffraction order can be reproduced and the original object function can be recovered by the iterations between object and hologram. Our iterative process allows a faithful recovery of the gap information to be extracted from the sub-holograms to achieve full-field imaging. The entire complex-value field that contains both the sampling and gap zones in the detection plane is finally retrieved. This faithful reconstruction using a sparse sensor array provides an effectively enlarged hologram for high-resolution digital holography.

Abstract:While digital holographic imaging can record both light intensity and phase information, its photodetector resolution lags behind that of optical dry plates, often resulting in a compromise between resolution and field of view. To overcome this limitation, we present an imaging method that combines Kramers–Kronig relations with wavelength division multiplexing, enabling large-field digital holographic imaging without sacrificing resolution. We validate the effectiveness of this method through simulation and example experiment, and demonstrate successful expansion of the field of view by 3 times with three color lasers, while improving the resolution.

Abstract:High resolution and wide field of view (FOV) are always the goals of imaging, which are related to the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the system. Currently, most methods focus on either resolution enhancement or FOV extension. Few works pay attention on both. There lacks a generalized framework for the joint space-frequency SBP expansion. We propose such a holographic imaging method, termed phase-space synthesized digital holography (PSH), which can improve and adjust resolution and FOV simultaneously, based on a phase-space analysis. Through a controllable SBP expansion in the phase space by multiangle divergent spherical wave illumination, a synthesized hologram is obtained to reconstruct a resolution-enhanced and FOV-extended image. Abstract:A short-focal-length double-Fourier-transform-lens system for holographic storage was designed. The system is minimized by propagating signal beam and reference beam along a common optical axis. In order to obtain a compact configuration and high information density, the front and the rear Fourier-transform lens have short focal length (33 and 30 mm, respectively). The multiconfiguration optimization method is adopted to correct aberrations of the object region and meet the requirement of reference beam. The designed system, whose total numerical aperture for signal beam and reference beam is 0.60, achieves diffraction-limited imaging quality. Spatial resolution enhancement in holographic imaging via angular spectrum expansion

Abstract:Digital holography numerically restores three-dimensional image information using optically captured diffractive waves. The required bandwidth is larger than that of hologram pixel at a closer distance in the Fresnel diffraction regime, which results in the formation of aliased replica patterns in digital hologram. From the analysis of sampling phenomenon, the replica functions are revealed to be the components of higher angular spectra of hologram. Undersampled hologram consists of the moire patterns formed by the modulation of original function by complex exponential function. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the replicas in both real and Fourier spaces. The possibility to acquire high-resolution images over a wide field view is explored in terms of the expansion process of angular spectrum by using replicas. Only a low-NA hologram captured over a wide field restores a high-resolution image when using an optimization algorithm. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed to investigate the proposed scheme.

Abstract:A multi-aperture far-field acoustic holography method has been proposed to obtain a better resolution in sound field visualization.Several small microphone arrays were used to form an equivalent large array according to certain optimization criterions.Firstly,the interference effect of adding multiple finite spatial windows to tKirchhoff diffraction integration acoustic holography was studied.Secondly,the main lobe widths and side lobe ratios were calculated,and the optimization criterions for placing multiple microphone arrays were stated.Then,the experiments with two loudspeakers were employed to validate the multi-aperture far-field acoustic holography method.It has been proved that the interference effect of multi-aperture array can be used to improve imaging resolution,and the proposed criterions can be used to obtain optimized resolution in the far-field.

Abstract:Lensless holographic imaging is challenged by the twin-image artifact due to the missing phase and the aliasing effect due to the undersampled measurement. Therefore, phase retrieval and pixel super-resolution (PSR) techniques serve as the essential ingredients for high-fidelity holographic imaging. In this work, we combine the two in a unified framework by formulating the PSR phase retrieval as a non-convex feasibility problem. An adaptive smoothing strategy for escaping local minima is introduced. Numerical and experimental results are presented and discussed. The proposed framework can be generalized to various physical settings, and is compatible with the state-of-the-art iterative projection algorithms.

Abstract:This Letter describes an approach to encode complex-amplitude light waves with spatiotemporal double-phase holograms(DPHs) for overcoming the limit of the space-bandwidth product(SBP) delivered by existing methods. To construct DPHs, two spatially macro-pixel encoded phase components are employed in the SBP-preserved resampling of complex holograms. Four generated sub-DPHs are displayed sequentially in time for high-quality holographic image reconstruction without reducing the image size or discarding any image terms when the DPHs are interweaved. The reconstructed holographic images contain more details and less speckle noise, with their signal-to-noise ratio and structure similarity index being improved by 14.64% and 78.79%,respectively.
