Abstract:In this paper, a long-distance coherent detection phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) scheme with bidirectional Raman and relay erbium-doped fiber hybrid amplification is proposed. The bidirectional Raman pump light acting on the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) can realize the passive amplification of pulsed signal light and Rayleigh backward scattering (RBS) light at the same time. The scheme utilizes bidirectional 1455 nm pumps as the pump source of relay amplification to achieve a longer sensing distance. Experimental results demonstrate that, an ultra-long Φ-OTDR system with 190 km sensing distance and 22 m spatial resolution is realized. Multi-point vibration signals are located and restored at 69.67 km, 120.13 km and 190.79 km, respectively. The average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of positioning curve is 10.32 dB, the average SNR of demodulated phase signal is 26.02 dB, and the frequency response range is from 5 Hz to 150 Hz. Furthermore, the sensing system has good linear characteristics of phase demodulation with a correlation coefficient of 0.997. The actual disturbance events are also detected at the far-end of sensing fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this system achieves the longest-distance Φ-OTDR without relay power supply. This passive hybrid amplification method can avoid the intermediate power supply along sensing fiber, which provides a reference for long-distance vibration monitoring of Φ-OTDR system.

Frequency response enhancement for long-range φ-OTDR system by additive random sampling and nonlinear frequency modulation

Abstract:We reported a new method based on additive random sampling (ARS) and non-linear frequency modulation (NLFM) to enhance the frequency response of long-range phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) system. Using the NLFM interrogation pulse, the side-lobe suppression ratio (SLSR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the demodulated traces are improved, and phase signal detection with less than 3m spatial resolution is achieved over 50 km sensing range. By modulating the NLFM laser pulse intervals, we realize the ARS and the uniform sampling alternately for every sensing point of the long interrogation fiber, and therefore the frequency domain aliasing is avoided. We test the proposed system by detected a 20 kHz harmonic signal, and this signal is well identified and reconstructed over 50 km sensing range.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) with 175 km sensing range and 25 m spatial resolution is demonstrated, using the combination of co-pumping second-order Raman amplification based on random fiber lasing, counter-pumping first-order Raman amplification, and counter-pumping Brillouin amplification. With elaborate arrangements, each pumping scheme is responsible for the signal amplification in one particular segment of all three. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that distributed vibration sensing is realized over such a long distance without inserting repeaters. The novel hybrid amplification scheme in this work can also be incorporated in other fiber-optic sensing systems for extension of sensing distance. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this study, the authors present an experimental and theoretical description of the use of first order Raman amplification to improve the performance of a Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer $(\phi \hbox{OTDR})$ when used for vibration measurements over very long distances. A special emphasis is given to the noise which is carefully characterized and minimized along the setup. A semiconductor optical amplifier and an optical switch are used to greatly decrease the intra-band coherent noise of the setup and balanced detection is used to minimize the effects of RIN transferred from the Raman pumps. The sensor was able to detect vibrations of up to 250 Hz (close to the limits set by the time of flight of light pulses) with a resolution of 10 m in a range of 125 km. To achieve the above performance, no post-processing was required in the $\phi \hbox{OTDR}$ signal. The evolution of the $\phi \hbox{OTDR}$ signal along the fiber is also shown to have a good agreement with the theoretical model.

Abstract:An ultra-long phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) that can achieve high-sensitivity intrusion detection over 131.5km fiber with high spatial resolution of 8m is presented, which is the longest Φ-OTDR reported to date, to the best of our knowledge. It is found that the combination of distributed Raman amplification with heterodyne detection can extend the sensing distance and enhances the sensitivity substantially, leading to the realization of ultra-long Φ-OTDR with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Furthermore, the feasibility of applying such an ultra-long Φ-OTDR to pipeline security monitoring is demonstrated and the features of intrusion signal can be extracted with improved SNR by using the wavelet detrending/denoising method proposed.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/<i>H</i> <i>z</i>. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

Abstract:A long-range (124km) fully distributed fiber-optic vibration sensing system is demonstrated, based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) with counter-pumping distributed fiber Brillouin amplification (FBA). FBA significantly enhances the probe pulse signal at the second half of the sensing fiber with less than 10dBm pump power, and its amplification efficiency is demonstrated to be much higher than 26.9dBm counter-pumping Raman amplification. As a result, demodulated intrusion signals along the whole sensing range can keep high signal to noise ratio. The FBA scheme demonstrated in this work can also be incorporated in many other distributed fiber-optic sensing systems for extension of sensing distance.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) distributed sensing system is proposed and demonstrated for long-distance intrusion monitoring. By using the bi-directional Raman optical amplification technology, even intrusion signal detection along the whole sensing distance of ~62km has been demonstrated, resulting in the longest and the most sensitive Φ -OTDR distributed sensing system reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, high-power single-mode fiber laser with ultra-narrow line-width and special optical fiber cable encapsulated by fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) are used to further enhance the intrusion detection sensitivity, respectively.

Abstract:The spatial-resolved capacity of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\varphi $ -OTDR) is limited by the optical pulse width, which increases the localization errors when measuring vibrations with range shorter than that determined by the pulse width. To overcome this problem, a high spatial-resolved $\varphi $ -OTDR with a differential pulse width sequence is proposed. The centimeter spatial resolution sensing can be realized by using meter equivalent pulses. This scheme utilizes the time-domain waveform subtraction obtained from the same pulse repetition rate and different pulse widths to form the differential vibration information at each fiber location. First, we provide a comprehensive treatment to prove that the proposed scheme can improve the spatial-resolved capacity of the $\varphi $ -OTDR system. The spatial resolution of 1.08m for 60/50ns pulse sequence is realized with a 30cm vibration source. Second, in a further proof-of-concept experiment, the spatial resolution is achieved up to 0.55m with a 55/50ns pulse sequence. It is demonstrated that the ability of spatial-resolved is enhanced greatly without any hardware modifications, compared to that required in the conventional method. This method holds great significance in accurately locating vibration signals within the narrow range of the distributed vibration sensor.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) can be used for pipeline security. However, the sensing distance (less than 20 km) of traditional Φ-OTDR is too short for the needs of typical oil and gas pipeline monitoring applications (30-50 km). A simple structure Φ-OTDR system utilizing long pulse, balanced amplified detector and heterodyne detection is proposed in this paper and the sensing range is thereby increased to 60 km. Through analyzing the sensing principle of Φ-OTDR, a novel locating strategy is proposed to maintain the locating accuracy at a few meters when a long pulse (5 µs) is used. The increased pulse width deteriorates the time series of each sensing point seriously. In order to eliminate the deterioration, a data processing technique combining wavelet and empirical mode decomposition is applied in this system. The experiment results show that the sensing distance can be increased to 60 km and the locating accuracy is maintained at 6.8 m.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). Both the phase and the amplitude of the Rayleigh scattering (RS) light can be demodulated in real-time. The technique is based on I/Q demodulation and homodyne detection using a 90° optical hybrid. The theoretical analysis is given, and as a proof of the concept, the dynamic strain sensing is experimentally demonstrated, with a sensing range of 12.566 km and a spatial resolution of 10 m.

Abstract:Distributed fiber-optic vibration sensors based on phase-sensitive optical timedomain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) have found many applications in various fields. In this paper, we analyze the phase noise of Φ-OTDR, which is the main limiting factor of the measurement range. We found that the laser phase noise and phase extraction error caused by the intensity noise in photodetection contribute to the total phase noise. By introducing a series of auxiliary weak reflection points along the fiber, we develop a phase-noise-compensated Φ-OTDR and realize a long-range distributed vibration sensing based on the phase extraction. Furthermore, a statistical analysis was proposed to maintain the vibration measurement sensitivity along the whole fiber. In the experiment, vibrations at 30 km were measured with a linear response, which confirmed the validity of our proposed system.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) has attracted attention in scientific research and industry because of its distributed dynamic linear response to external disturbances. However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Φ-OTDR is still a limited factor by the weak Rayleigh Backscattering coefficient. Here, the multi-transverse modes heterodyne matched-filtering technology is proposed to improve the system SNR. The capture efficiency and nonlinear threshold are increased with multiple transverse modes in few-mode fibers; the incident light energy is permitted to be enlarged by a wider probe pulse by using heterodyne matched-filtering without spatial resolution being deteriorated. As far as we know, this is the first time that both multi-transverse modes integration method and digital heterodyne matched filtering method have been used to improve the SNR of Φ-OTDR simultaneously. Experimental results show that the noise floor is reduced by 11.4 dB, while the target signal is kept. We believe that this proposed method will help DAS find important applications in marine acoustic detection and seismic detection.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (phi OTDR) system that can detect intrusion over 150 km is presented. The phi OTDR system uses nonbalanced optical repeaters to extend the sensing distance. The repeater consists of two erbium-doped optical fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and one Raman amplifier (RA). One EDFA power amplifier amplifies the forward-transmitting pulse, and one EDFA preamplifier is used for the backscattering signal, respectively. The RA helps keeping the power along the fiber stable. The optical repeater is installed at the connection of two adjacent fibers to compe nsate the power decline due to fiber loss. It is easy to install the repeater midway among the fiber links in the system for longer-distance sensing since there is no need of modifying the original sensing system. The theoretical analysis of the repeater is given to describe its effect on the distributed sensing. In experiments, several phi OTDR traces show a good agreement with theoretical results. Using the optical repeater, 35-Hz vibration at 151 km is successfully measured with signal-to-noise ratio of 8 dB without extra signal processing. Abstract:In the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) domain, simultaneous measurement of vibration and temperature/strain based on Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in fiber could have wide applications. However, there are certain challenges for the case of ultra-long sensing range, including the interplay of different scattering mechanisms, the interaction of two types of sensing signals, and the competition of pump power. In this paper, a hybrid DOFS system, which can simultaneously measure temperature/strain and vibration over 150 km, is elaborately designed via integrating the Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (phi-OTDR). Distributed Raman and Brillouin amplifications, frequency division multiplexing (FDM), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and time division multiplexing (TDM) are delicately fused to accommodate ultra-long-distance BOTDA and phi-OTDR. Consequently, the sensing range of the hybrid system is 150.62 km, and the spatial resolution of BOTDA and phi-OTDR are 9 m and 30 m, respectively. The measurement uncertainty of the BOTDA is +/- 0.82 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such hybrid DOFS is realized with a hundred-kilometer length scale.
Enhancement for Φ-OTDR Performance by Using Narrow Linewidth Light Source and Signal Processing

Abstract:In order to enhance the signal-to-noise-ratio of a distributed acoustic sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), we have proposed a combination of segmented unwrapping algorithm, averaging estimation of phase difference, and infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering method. The enhancement of signal quality is numerically demonstrated. Moreover, we have studied the influence resulted from the light source noise on the Φ-OTDR performance. The result has shown that when the linewidth of light source used in the Φ-OTDR system is narrower, the performance of the system is better. In a word, such a Φ-OTDR system could obtain higher quality demodulated signals when the narrower linewidth light source is chosen and the method of averaging estimation phase difference is used.
