Abstract:Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, aliphatic polyesters are widely used in the biomedical, packaging and agricultural fields, which are usually accessed by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and the catalysts particularly play an important role. Herein a series of quinolinyl-urea catalysts have been synthesized via the reaction between isocyanate and aminoquinoline with an amino group at different substitution positions and characterized. In combination with 7-methyl-1, 5, 7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (MTBD) as a cocatalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as an initiator, 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(quinolin-3-yl)urea (3-QU) was observed to be most active for the ROP of δ-valerolactone (δ-VL). The polymerization conditions were optimized by varying the type of organic base, catalyst concentration and reaction temperature. By changing the ratio of [M]0/[I], linear polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared. The kinetic and chain extension experiments were carried out to prove the “living”/controllable feature. And the NMR experiments were used to support the proposal of possible mechanism.

Abstract:The ring-opening copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone and delta-valerolactone was carried out under solvent-free conditions with a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system by premixing two monomers, yielding gradient copolyesters with cyclic and linear structures in the absence or presence of an initiator, respectively. The random and block copolyesters of these two monomers were also prepared for comparison. The results of H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra determined the linear and cyclic structure of copolymers. The kinetic experiment was used to determine the consuming rates of two monomers during the polymerization. The topologies and thermal properties of all the copolymers were characterized and compared by NMR and DSC.

Abstract:Selective transformation of carbon dioxide and epoxides into degradable polycarbonates (CO2-based copolymer) has been regarded as a most promising green polymerization process. Although tremendous progress has been made during the past decade, very few successful examples have been reported to synthesize well-defined block copolymers to expand the scope of these green copolymers. Herein, we report a tandem strategy combining two living polymerization techniques, salenCo(III)X-catalyzed styrene oxide SO/CO2 copolymerization and ring-opening polymerization of lactide with DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene), for the synthesis of poly(styrene carbonate-block-lactide) copolymers. The key to the success of this tandem strategy is the judicious choice of water as the chain transfer and/or chain terminator reagent, which is added at the end of the salenCo(III)X-catalyzed SO/CO2 copolymerization to in situ generate hydroxyl groups at the end of the polymer chains. The resulting polycarbonates with -OH end groups can thus be directly used as macroinitiators to subsequently initiate ring opening polymerization of lac-fide to synthesize the diblock copolymers. Because of the living polymerization nature of both steps in this tandem strategy, we have demonstrated that the diblock copolymers synthesized possess well-defined structures with narrow molecular weight distributions and controllable lengths of both styrene carbonate and lactide blocks.

Abstract:In combination with methyllithium, a 2,6-bis(amino)phenol zinc complex 1 was used in the ring-opening polymerization of δ -valerolactone in the absence or presence of benzyl alcohol and showed high efficiency, mainly producing cyclic and linear polyvalerolactones, respectively. On the basis of homopolymerization, the ring-opening copolymerization of ε -caprolactone and δ -valerolactone was investigated. The P(CL- co -VL) random copolymers, PCL- b -PVL and PVL- b -PCL diblock copolymers, were prepared by varying the feeding strategy (premixing or sequential feeding). The copolymer composition was adjusted by varying the feeding ratio of two monomers. The structure and thermal properties of obtained polymers were characterized by GPC, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, and DSC, respectively.

Abstract:In combination with 7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]clec-5-ene (MTBD), the benzoxazolyl urea (NO) catalyst was very efficient for the solution ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (L-LA) in the presence of benzyl alcohol. On the basis of homopolymerization, the solution ring-opening copolymerization of L-LA and delta-valerolactone (delta-VL) was investigated and the PLLA-co-PVL random and PLLA-b-PVL block copolymers were prepared via varying the feeding strategy (premixing or sequential feeding) and the feeding ratio of two monomers. The sequence structure of copolymers was analyzed by H-1- and C-13-NMR spectra and the copolymer compositions in the copolymers were in consistence with the feeding ratio of two monomers. The randomness R of the random copolymers prepared via premixing two monomers was about 0.5, which was between completely random and block copolymers. The thermal properties were tested by the differential calorimetry scanning (DSC). When the contents of two monomers in the copolymers were relatively close, no melting peak could be observed in the DSC curves and the samples was rubbery at room temperature as an amorphous polymer. As the content of VL segments decreased, the glass transition temperature of random copolymers increased. In addition, the block copolymers (PLLA-b-PVL) were synthesized through the "one-pot method" and "chain extension method". The sequence of segments was controllable and the randomness R approached zero. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:An intramolecular ring-opening of vinylidenecyclopropanes (VDCPs) tethered with alcohol chains has been established. A series of transition metal catalysts and their combinations have been screened under mild conditions, and a cocatalyst system consisting of [(Ph(3)PAu)(3)O]BF(4) (4 mol %) and AgOTf (4 mol %) was found to catalyze the reaction to completion within 10-30 min in 1,4-dioxane at 60 degrees C to give allene-functionalized tetrahydropyrans.

Abstract:Being a disubstituted delta-valerolactone synthesized by the telomerization of carbon dioxide with 1,3-butadiene, 3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (EVL) contains a six-membered ring and two unsaturated groups. This report describes the synthesis of an amphiphilic graft copolymer by the combination of thiol-ene click polymerization and ring-opening grafting reaction of EVL, ethyldithiol (EDT), and methoxy polyethylene glycol (mPEG-OH). The alternating copolymer of P(EVL-alt-EDT) with 17.9 wt% CO2 content and weight-average molecular weight (M-w) of 7 kg/mol was prepared by means of the free radical thiol-ene click polymerization of EVL with EDT initiated by 2,2-dimethoxy-1,2-diphenylethanone under UV irradiation. The following alcoholysis of the lactone ring of P(EVL-alt-EDT) backbone by mPEG-OH is catalyzed by 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene, producing the amphiphilic graft copolymer P(EVL-alt-EDT)-g-PEG(750) with M-w of 12 kg/mol. The polymers are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectra, size exclusion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The one-pot orthogonal strategy is a new utilization of EVL in synthetic polymers and it is significant to the carbon dioxide transformation.

Abstract:As a substituted‐δ‐valerolactone, α‐ethylidene‐δ‐vinyl‐δ‐valerolactone (EVL) provides a method of utilizing carbon dioxide with 1,3‐butadiene to produce functional polymers. Its di‐ene‐substituted lactone ring was considered inactive in polymerization in the past two decades, while successful polymerization attempts of EVL have been reported very recently. Novel synthetic strategies and functional polymers from EVL have been developed. The ring‐opening reactions of EVL and the corresponding polymers as well as the ring‐opening (co)polymerizations of EVL and its derivatives are highlighted in this review. The obtained functional polymers with or without facile post‐polymerization modification possess unique properties, such as amphipathy, elasticity, peel resistance, etc., allowing for application potential in various fields.

Abstract:3-Ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (EVL) is a disubstituent dlactone derived from CO2 and 1,3-butadiene. In this contribution, we report the ringopening polymerization (ROP) of EVL with beta-butyrolactone (BBL) as the comonomer catalyzed by scandium triflate [Sc(OTf)(3)]. The obtained polyester bearing active unsaturated bonds has the weight-average molecular weight (M-w) of 4.1 kg/mol, in which the EVL content is 38 mol % in accordance with the initial ratio of 40 mol %. The copolymers are characterized in detail and the cationic ROP mechanism has been confirmed by kinetic study, chain end analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The modification of the unsaturated bonds in EVL repeating units via the thioene click reaction with mercapto-ended polysarcosine polysarcosine yields the amphiphilic grafting polymers. It is a CO2 fixation approach toward the functional poly(EVL-r-BBL) that is promising as a degradable polyester precursor for adhesive or surface-coating materials.

Abstract:(Thio)urea/base systems have been widely used in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones based on their superior performance in activity and selectivity. Herein, a pyridyl-urea (6C-PU)/7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene catalytic system is used to prepare the polyesters with cyclic topology via the ROP of lactones in the absence of initiator under solvent-free conditions. The catalytic system shows high activity in the ROP of delta-valerolactone (delta-VL) and cyclic polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained despite the existence of some linear products generated during the precipitation process. The structure of the resulting polymers is determined by proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and intrinsic viscosity studies. A possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of NMR analysis and characteristics of polymerization. Thermal and mechanical properties of cyclic PVLs are investigated through differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile test.

Abstract:A novel metal-free and protecting-group-free synthesis method to prepare telechelic thiol-functionalized polyesters is developed by employing organocatalysis. A scope of Brønsted acids, including trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (1), HCl.Et2O (2), diphenyl phosphate (3), γ-resorcylic acid (4) and methanesulfonic acid (5), are evaluated to promote ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone with unprotected 6-mercapto-1-hexanol as the multifunctional initiator. Among them, diphenyl phosphate (3) exhibits great chemoselectivity and efficiency, which allows for simply synthesis of thiol-terminated poly(ε-caprolactone) with near-quantitative thiol fidelity, full monomer conversion, controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. Kinetic study confirms living/controlled nature of the organocatalyzed chemoselective polymerizations. Density functional theory calculation illustrates that the chemoselectivity of diphenyl phosphate (3) is attributed to the stronger bifunctional activation of monomer and initiator/chain-end as well as the lower energy in hydroxyl pathway than thiol one. Moreover, series of tailor-made telechelic thiol-terminated poly(δ-valerolactone) and block copolymers are efficiently generated under mild conditions.

Abstract:The challenging ring-opening homo-polymerization of α-ethylidene-δ-vinyl-δ-valerolactone (EVL), de-rived from CO2 and 1,3-butadiene, has aroused ex-tensive attention in consideration of economic effi-ciency and functionalization potential. Here, we achieve the first cationic ring-opening polymeriza-tion (CROP) of EVL, yielding well-defined polyester PEVL with number average molecular weight up to 12.8 kg/mol and low dispersity of 1.2. The obtained PEVL contains two kinds of structural units derived from EVL and three kinds of alkenyl groups, indicat-ing an isomerization during propagation. The isom-erization is necessary to the propagation, evidenced by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and unavailable CROP of the semi-hydrogenated EVL de-rivative without δ-vinyl group (α-ethylidene-δ-ethyl-δ-valerolactone). The fast intramolecular transfer reaction and slow initiation result in the cyclic to-pology fidelity of PEVL, providing the first example of quantitative formation of cyclic polyester in CROP. PEVL is degradable and recyclable, possessing a low glass transition temperature (Tg) of -33.6 ℃, while the product after modification with 1-octadecanethiol exhibits a melting point (Tm) of 42.2 ℃.

Abstract:alpha-Ethylidene-delta-vinyl-delta-valerolactone (EVL) is the only intermediate to synthesize copolymers of CO2 with 1,3-butadiene whose ring-opening polymerization (ROP), however, is obstructed by the tiglate group. In the contribution, EVL derivatives are synthesized through a Michael addition reaction to saturate the conjugated double bond as well as introduce various groups to synthesize polyesters with designable molecular weights (M-n = 6.9-12.8 kgmol(-1)), narrow dispersities (& Dstrok; = 1.08-1.19), tunable glass-transition temperatures (T-g = -45-3 degrees C), and excellent refractive indices (n(d) = 1.64-1.79) via living and controlled ROP. The obtained polyesters are able to be recycled to the corresponding monomers, which can prepare comparable polymers with identical side groups, realizing the homorecycling. In addition, the retro-Michael addition reaction is established and employed, realizing heterorecycling, which can alter properties during recycling. We propose a strategy for EVL derivatives and establish the corresponding polyester platform with not only high refractive indices and tunable T(g)s, but also the ability to tailor properties during recycling.
Ring-Opening Copolymerizations of a CO2-derived δ-Valerolactone with ε-Caprolactone and L-Lactide

Abstract:Ring-opening random, gradient, and block copolymerizations of the CO2¬-derived δ-valerolactone 3-ethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (EtVP) with ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and L-lactide (LLA) are reported. By employing both concurrent and sequential addition strategies, a variety of thermal and physical properties could be accessed. Concurrent copolymerization of EtVP with ε-CL yielded gradient copolymers with low glass transition temperatures, while block copolymerizations via sequential addition led to semi-crystalline materials regardless of monomer feed ratios. For LLA copolymerizations, glass transition temperatures increased with LLA incorporation regardless of addi-tion method, but higher Tg values were observed in block copolymerizations from sequential addition. Tensile testing of a poly(EtVP-b-LLA) with molar ratio of 40:60 EtVP:LLA resulted in σ = 0.8 MPa, E = 5.6 MPa and 83% elongation at break. The chemical recyclability of EtVP-based copolymers was explored as an end-of-life option. Both ε-CL and LLA copolymers could be recycled, with block copolymers giving higher yields of recycled monomers than random copolymers.

Abstract:A fully renewable bio-based bicyclic lactone containing a five-membered cyclic ketal moiety, 7-methyl-3,8,10-trioxabicyclo[5.2.1]decan-4-one (TOD), was synthesized through a two-step acid-catalyzed process from glycerol and levulinic acid. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of TOD at 30°C with benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as the initiator and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as the catalyst can afford high molar mass PTOD with a cis-2.4-disubstitued 2-methyl 1,3-dioxolane moiety in its repeating unit. PTOD is an amorphous polymer with a glass transition temperature (Tg ) of 13°C. It can be hydrolyzed into structurally defined small molecules under acidic or basic conditions by the selective cleavage of either the cyclic ketal or the ester linkage respectively. The TBD-catalyzed copolymerization of L-lactide (L-LA) and TOD at -20°C was investigated. It was confirmed that L-LA polymerized quickly with racemization to form PLA, followed by a slow incorporation of TOD into the formed PLA chains via transesterification. By varying the feed ratios of L-LA to TOD, a series of random copolymers (PLA-co-PTOD) with different TOD incorporation ratios and tunable Tg s were obtained. Under acidic conditions, PLA-co-PTOD degrades much faster than PLA via the selective cleavage of the cyclic ketal linkages. This work provides insights for the development of more sustainable and acid-accelerated degradable alternatives to aliphatic polyesters.
