Abstract:Dichroic circular polarizers (DCP) represent an important group of optical filters that transfer only that part of the incident light with the desired polarization state and absorb the remainder. However, DCPs are usually bulky and exhibit significant optical loss. Moreover, the integration of these kinds of DCP devices can be difficult and costly as different compositions of chemicals are needed to achieve the desired polarization status. Circular polarizers based on metasurfaces require only thin films in the order of hundreds of nanometers but are limited by their sensitivity to angle of incidence. Furthermore, few existing solutions offer broadband operation in the visible range. By using computational simulations, this paper proposes and analyses a plasmonic DCP structure operating in the visible, from 400 nm to 700 nm which overcomes these drawbacks. The resulting circular dichroism transmission (CDT) is more than 0.9, and the maximum transmission efficiency is greater than 78% at visible wavelengths. These CDT characteristics are largely independent of angle of incidence up to angles of 80 degrees.

Hybrid Bilayer Plasmonic Metasurface Efficiently Manipulates Visible Light

Abstract:Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.'s study), although the metal's ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell's law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.

Abstract:We report an integrated implementation of a surface plasmonic TE-pass polarizer on a silica-on-silicon waveguide. The effect of waveguide width and length on polarization extinction ratio (PER) were investigated. For a 10 mm device, PER in excess of 48 dB with TE mode loss of approximately 0.8 dB was recorded. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate a wavelength dependence of PER smaller than 3 dB with a width of 5.5- 6.5 mu m device over the C band from 1520-1580 nm. We also present a theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of this architecture that are in good agreement with each other and the experimental results. By improving the fabrication process and PER measurement method, over 60 dB PER and less 0.1 dB TE mode loss can be obtained for a 10 mm polarizer according to our model, which is expected to be widely applicated in sensors such as optical gyroscopes.

Abstract:Angle insensitive color filter based on Metal-SiO x -Metal structure is proposed in this paper, which can keep the same perceived transmitted color when the incidence angle changes from 0° to 60°, especially for p-polarization light. Various silicon oxide films deposited by reaction magnetron sputtering with a tunable refractive index from 1.97 to 3.84 is introduced to meet the strict angle insensitive resonance conditions. The angle resolved spectral filtering for both p-polarization light and s-polarization light are quite well, which can be attributed to the different physical origins for the high angular tolerance for two polarizations. Finally, the effect of SiO x absorption and Ag thickness on the peak transmittance are analyzed.

Abstract:Generalizing broadband angular selectivity to both polarizations has been a scientific challenge for a long time. Previous demonstrations of the broadband angular selectivity work only for one polarization. In this paper, we propose a method that can achieve polarization-independent optical broadband angular selectivity. Our design is based on a material system consisting of alternating one dimensionally anisotropic photonic crystal (1D PhC) stacks and half wave plates. 1D PhC stacks have an angular photonic band gap for p polarized light and half-wave plates can convert s-polarized light to p-polarized light. By introducing alternating 1D PhC stacks and half-wave plates, we predict that one can achieve a central transmission angle at normal incidence and an angularly selective range of less than 30 across the whole visible spectrum.

Abstract:Surface topography and refractive index profile dictate the deterministic functionality of a lens. The polarity of most lenses reported so far, that is, either positive (convex) or negative (concave), depends on the curvatures of the interfaces. Here we experimentally demonstrate a counter-intuitive dual-polarity flat lens based on helicity-dependent phase discontinuities for circularly polarized light. Specifically, by controlling the helicity of the input light, the positive and negative polarity are interchangeable in one identical flat lens. Helicity-controllable real and virtual focal planes, as well as magnified and demagnified imaging, are observed on the same plasmonic lens at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The plasmonic metalens with dual polarity may empower advanced research and applications in helicity-dependent focusing and imaging devices, angular-momentum-based quantum information processing and integrated nano-optoelectronics.
Double-sided Polarization-Independent Plasmonic Absorber at Near-Infrared Region.

Abstract:A double-sided polarization-independent plasmonic absorber is proposed and numerically investigated. Distinct from previously studied absorbers, it could absorb light incident from both sides of the surface through an ultrathin three-layer metal-insulator-metal nanostructure. Patterned metal particles are adopted instead of metal films in this absorber. It shows a high absorbance over a wide incident-angle range at near-infrared region. For electromagnetic waves incident from different sides of the structure, the maximum absorption locates at different wavelengths due to asymmetry. The effective medium theory demonstrates that the whole structure exhibits different impedances for both top and bottom incidences. This double-sided-absorption characteristic could lead to potential applications in thermal emitters, sensing, etc.

Abstract:A dual-band (mid- and long-wave infrared) polarization-selective plasmonic absorber was designed and numerically investigated. This absorber traps definite polarization light and reflects light that is perpendicular to the polarization direction. It is extremely sensitive to polarization angle and can keep robustness to oblique incidence. The extinction rate does not reduce when the incident angle is even near 80°and rate value keeps above 130 for both resonance peaks. The absorber can respond to mid- and long-wave infrared atmospheric windows simultaneously and achieve near-unity absorption at 3.3 μm and 9.8 μm for specific polarization under normal radiation. The resonance condition is tuned by altering the geometric design. Owing to its high absorptivity and fine polarization properties, the absorber combines the advantages of a light absorber and a polarizer, and can be utilized in an uncooled infrared polarization detector, which simplify the optical system design and avoid the polarization information reconstruction error caused by the misplacement between the polarizer and the pixel.

Abstract:A quarter-wave plate using plasmonic patch antennas has been investigated. The nanostructures can convert linear polarized light into circular polarized light in the visible range (633 nm). By further exploiting the dimer patch antenna structure composed of different metals, directional emission (with a directivity of 4.8) of circular polarized light (with a conversion efficiency of 27.8%) in an oblique direction with respect to the incident light is enabled. Compared with previous designs, the proposed structures are ultra-thin, and are more suitable for integration applications.

Abstract:We propose a new type of reflective polarizer based on polarization-dependent coupling to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from free space. This inexpensive polarizer is relatively narrowband but features an extinction ratio of up to 1000 with efficiency of up to 95% for the desired polarization (numbers from a calculation) and thus can be stacked to achieve extinction ratios of 106 or more. As a proof of concept, we experimentally realized a polarizer based on nanoporous aluminum oxide that operates around a wavelength of 10.6 μm, corresponding to the output of a CO2 laser, using aluminum anodization, a low-cost electrochemical process.
Low-Loss Broadband Transverse Electric Pass Hybrid Plasmonic Fiber Polarizers Using Metallic Nanomaterials

Abstract:Metals were for decades perceived as devoid of interesting optical properties that could be harnessed for optical components and devices. However, with the development of accurate nanofabrication techniques and precise control over architectural parameters, metals can be structured and characterized on the nanoscale. Metallic plasmonic nanomaterials exhibit a number of unique structural and optical properties, which offer the potential for developing new types of plasmonic devices. Here, we demonstrate a low-loss broadband polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic fiber structure using metals as polarization-selective absorption materials. The polarization mechanism, design, fabrication, and characteristics of the plasmonic polarizers are investigated theoretically, numerically, and experimentally. The theoretical analysis predicts that the polarization-selective absorption with insensitivity to wavelength enables hybrid plasmonic fibers to function as broadband polarizers. Numerical simulations give the comparison of the polarization-selective absorption of various metallic nanomaterials (Ag, Au, In, Al, Cr) and show that aluminum is regarded as the optimum absorption material for the plasmonic polarizer. Experimental results show that through precise control over geometrical parameters, this device is capable of offering a high polarization extinction ratio (PER) of over 40 dB and a low insertion loss (IL) of less than 1.3 dB in the wavelength region of 810.1–870.0 nm. Compared with commercial birefringent-crystal-fiber polarizers, the plasmonic fiber polarizer has a better PER and IL bandwidth. Plasmonic ultra-broadband polarizers based on Ag nano wire-slit arrays

Abstract:We propose ultra-broadband reflective and absorptive polarizers in the visible range using multi-scaled Ag nano wire-slit arrays. The nano arrays can be tuned from reflective to absorptive by incorporating Ag wires/strips with different lengths/widths. The ultra-broadband nature of the absorptive array, with averaged absorption as high as ~80%, is due to the collective excitations of plasmonic resonances in the Ag wires/strips with different length scales. The Ag nano wire-slit arrays are realized experimentally by using a simple two-times shadowing vapor deposition method. They exhibit broadband transmission difference, in good agreement with simulations. The multi-scaled Ag nano wire-slit array has potential applications as broadband linear polarizers and anti-reflective materials in both optics and photovoltaics.

Abstract:An in-line high efficient polarizer, composed of tapered fiber on the Au thin film, is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The protocol is based on the high efficient adiabatic conversion of transverse magnetic mode from tapered fiber into surface plasmon (SP) and attenuates quickly in metal film. On the contrary, the transverse electric polarized light is influenced hardly in the whole process. The polarization extinction ratio higher than 500:1 (≈27 dB) is obtained in our experiment. Our demonstration offers a potential way to manipulate the polarization of light in integrated circuit and may inspirit more attention to surface plasmon based devices for polarization controlling.

Abstract:Analyzing the polarization of a circularly polarized light is a critical issue. We have fabricated a spiral nano-structure on the Au film by using focused ion beam etching technique. The fabricated structure can be used as a plasmonic circular polarization analyzer. By designing the relative orientation of two nano-apertures in the spiral structural unit, the propagation direction of the surface plasmon polaritons excited by circularly polarized light of opposite handedness can be controlled. Therefore, the spiral structure could be used to accurately determine the helicity of the excited circularly polarized light. Based on the results of scanning near-field optical microscopy, the obtained circular polarization extinction ratio of this structure was above 500. This structure can be used for a flexible detecting size and a very wide spectrum.
Interference-type plasmonic polarizers and generalized law of Malus

Abstract:The conventional linear polarizer only allows the electric component parallel to the polarizer axis to pass through whereas prohibits the vertical component. We propose that a specially-designed single-layer plasmonic polarizer can couple both parallel and vertical electric components to the transmission, thus breaking the classical law of Malus. A variety of anomalous polarization effects, such as the asymmetric polarization-angle dependence, enhanced polarization filtering with wide polarization angle, and tunable polarization rotation from 0o to 90o, can be resulted. To understand the effects, the generalized law of Malus,originating from the superposition principle, has been presented and analyzed. This provides a basis for studying the interference-type plasmonic polarizers, where the interference effect and polarization effect are combined together. The difference between the plasmonic and conventional polarizers is of both fundamental and practical interests.

Ultrahigh Extinction-Ratio Circular Polarization Analyzer with Chiral Plasmonic Lens

Abstract:A chiral plasmonic lens (CPL) suitable for circular polarization analyzer is designed and numerically investigated. It consists of two arrays of rectangular nanoslits milled into a gold film along Archimedes spirals. We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that the designed structure can convert an incident circularly polarized light beam with prescribed chirality into a Bessel-like distributed focus, but the circularly polarized one with the opposite chirality cannot be transmitted and focused by the same CPL due to the alternative chirality. Further, three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations show that an ultrahigh extinction ratio up to ten thousands of the CPL is numerically achieved with a device less than 10 λspp, which is two orders higher than that of a conventional plasmonic circularization analyzer with single Archimedes-spiral groove. The designed structure can be widely used in miniature polarimeter and detection of spin angular momentum.
Angle multifunctional dichroism in metasurfaces

Abstract:We demonstrate metasurfaces with strong polarization dichroism that depends on the angle of incidence. We present original designs obtained through topology optimization that selectively transmit specific linear or circular polarizations at different incident angles, while the orthogonal polarization transmission is suppressed. The designed metasurfaces exceed 95% transmission efficiency and 50x extinction ratio within the target angle ranges. The experimental characterization of fabricated metasurfaces confirms the desired operation with 90% transmission efficiency and 10x extinction ratio. These results provide important insights to non-local and k-space engineering of metasurface response and results reveal new opportunities for future multi-functional and angle-selective polarization devices that can find applications in specialized optical instruments and end-user devices.

Abstract:The optical blue filter with the suitable bandwidth, high transmittance and large acceptance angle is usually regarded as a critical optical component for a variety of applications. Here, we propose a polarization-insensitive angle-tolerant hybrid plasmonic blue filter incorporating two-dimensional aluminum (Al) nanodisks on the top of planar waveguide. The proposed plasmonic filter works via hybridization of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode, the localized Fabry–Perot resonance and waveguide mode, thus enables high peak transmittance up to 70% with the bandwidth of 30 nm and large acceptance angle up to 20°.
