Abstract:Dichroic circular polarizers (DCP) represent an important group of optical filters that transfer only that part of the incident light with the desired polarization state and absorb the remainder. However, DCPs are usually bulky and exhibit significant optical loss. Moreover, the integration of these kinds of DCP devices can be difficult and costly as different compositions of chemicals are needed to achieve the desired polarization status. Circular polarizers based on metasurfaces require only thin films in the order of hundreds of nanometers but are limited by their sensitivity to angle of incidence. Furthermore, few existing solutions offer broadband operation in the visible range. By using computational simulations, this paper proposes and analyses a plasmonic DCP structure operating in the visible, from 400 nm to 700 nm which overcomes these drawbacks. The resulting circular dichroism transmission (CDT) is more than 0.9, and the maximum transmission efficiency is greater than 78% at visible wavelengths. These CDT characteristics are largely independent of angle of incidence up to angles of 80 degrees.

Abstract:Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three-or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed circuit board. Based on the proposed idea, a sample converting a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized one is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The conversion efficiency is measured to be 60%.
Manipulating Optical Polarization by Stereo Plasmonic Structure

Abstract:We theoretically study a particular plasmonic structure with stereo nanoholes array in metallic film, which has remarkable abilities to manipulate the optical polarizations at optical frequencies. The main property is that any linear polarization states including a complete 90° optical rotation can be obtained in transmission by proper structural design in combination of enhanced transmission efficiency. Together with the polarization change, surface plasmon propagation bounded on the surface of transmission side also can be modulated. Furthermore, an analytical Coupled Mode Method (CMM) is developed by introducing a frequency dependent coupling coefficient to describe such optical rotation property in stereo plasmonic systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a broadband circular polarizer with a ring/disk cavity structure, which is a broadband application of plasmon hybridizations. The proposed design can convert a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized wave from 12.66 GHz to 17.43 GHz within a bandwidth of 30%. The broadband polarization conversion characterization results from the different plasmon hybridization modes induced in the ring/disk cavity. The proposed broadband circular polarizer is demonstrated by both full-wave simulation and measurement.

Abstract:We propose an alternative design of efficient and compact polarization beam splitters for wide-angle and polarization-sensitive incidence of electromagnetic waves at near-infrared frequencies. The designed system is constructed by depositing periodic metallic strips on top and bottom of a continuous metal film. Based on the optimization of structure parameters, the whole system can suppress transmission (~ 0%) for one polarization and enhance transmission for another polarization (~ 95%). This phenomenon of anisotropic transmission can be attributed to different performances of impedance along different polarization directions. This device may find applications in optical components and polarization filter.

Abstract:Based on the theory of circular polarization dichroism in electromagnetic fields, this paper studies the circular dichroism (CD) characteristics of metasurfaces. Using a stable silicon material, an innovative "double L-shaped" composite structure formed by two L crosses is proposed to improve CD. Under a wide spectrum with wavelengths of 1000-1500 nm, the left circularly polarized (LCP) and right circularly polarized (RCP) lights pass through the structure, and we study the influence of different structural parameters on the CD, in order to obtain the best structural parameters. These realize the cross polarization of left-right circularly polarized light. In addition, at the wavelength of 1302.63 nm, the LCP light illuminates the structure, which realizes the cross polarization of LCP light; that is, the structure realizes the function of a half-wave plate. The RCP light incident structure realizes the function of a filter. It has great application prospects in biological detection, half-wave plates, filters, and other fields.

Abstract:Optical responses in Bi-layer metallic nanowire grating are investigated. There are two kinds of Surface Plasmon resonances: lateral propagating Surface Plasmon waveguide modes excited by the diffraction of the grating which lead to dips in transmission; Surface Plasmon resonance between the slits of the grating, which leads to high extinction ration of TM to TE transmission. With simultaneous resonances, a compacted device of integrated color filter and polarizer can be achieved. In order to improve the transmission of TM light, an undercut structure is proposed. The mechanism of the enhancement is analyzed. Bi-layer metallic nanowire gratings are fabricated by laser interference lithography and subsequent E-beam deposition. The measured transmission and reflection spectra confirmed the theoretical and numerical simulations. The results will have wide potential applications in Displays, Optical communication, and integrated Optics.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength polarizers have many essential applications in optics, quantum communication, Q switch and relating research fields. However, polarizing waveband of the traditional polarizer is restricted in the structure of fibers, which results in finite polarizing wavelengths. In this work, a novel D-shaped microstructure fiber polarizer (DMFP) with metal grating was proposed. Utilizing the abundant harmonic vector characteristics on the surface of metal grating, the DMFP can realize the function of multi-band polarization filtering. Numerical results show that it can achieve three bands of polarization filtering in x-polarized mode from 350 nm to 1600 nm and the resonance wavelengths are periodically modulated by grating. In the meanwhile, by optimizing grating parameters, the number of bands of polarization filtering can be further increased, thus, it fulfills the effective adjustment of polarization filtering. It is promising that metal grating based DMFP has great potential values in the fields of optical filter, communication, and functional devices, etc.

Abstract:Just like an electronic diode that allows the electrical current to flow in one direction only, a kind of chiral metamaterial structure with a similar functionality for the electromagnetic wave is proposed. The designed nanostructure that consists of twisted metallic split-ring resonators on both sides of a dielectric substrate achieves asymmetric transmission for a forward and backward propagating linearly polarized wave by numerical simulation in near-infrared band. Difference in transmission efficiency of the optimized structure between the same polarized waves incident from opposite directions can reach a maximum at the communication wavelength （1.55 μm）. Moreover, the simulation results of this structure also exhibit strong optical activity and circular dichroism.

Abstract:The active control of upconversion polarization in lanthanide -doped nanocrystals through plasmon-photon coupling enables ultracompact nonlinear photonic devices for polarization -encoded optical communication and information processing. However, current plasmonic nanostructures used for this purpose suffer from limited tunability and insufficient sensitivity to polarization, making effective control challenging. Here, we introduce an upconversion plasmonphore platform that overcomes the limitations of isotropic upconversion nanocrystals by utilizing anisotropic gap-plasmonmode-supported metasurfaces. This platform allows the precise control of plasmon-enhanced excitation polarization and plasmoncoupled emission. When excited with linearly polarized light, the hybrid nanoplatform can switch between four upconversion polarization states, enabling multi -level photonic outputs in parallel or orthogonal configurations. We also demonstrate an information multiplexing scheme using this platform. Our numerical and experimental results not only shed light on nonlinear light -matter interactions and luminescence anisotropy at the nanoscale but also facilitate the development of novel nonlinear polaritonic nanodevices for polarization -based integrated photonics.
Ultrahigh Extinction-Ratio Circular Polarization Analyzer with Chiral Plasmonic Lens

Abstract:A chiral plasmonic lens (CPL) suitable for circular polarization analyzer is designed and numerically investigated. It consists of two arrays of rectangular nanoslits milled into a gold film along Archimedes spirals. We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that the designed structure can convert an incident circularly polarized light beam with prescribed chirality into a Bessel-like distributed focus, but the circularly polarized one with the opposite chirality cannot be transmitted and focused by the same CPL due to the alternative chirality. Further, three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations show that an ultrahigh extinction ratio up to ten thousands of the CPL is numerically achieved with a device less than 10 λspp, which is two orders higher than that of a conventional plasmonic circularization analyzer with single Archimedes-spiral groove. The designed structure can be widely used in miniature polarimeter and detection of spin angular momentum.

Abstract:We show that optical transmission of linearly polarized light through a plasmonic subwavelength metallic grating cascaded with a dielectric grating at a 45° angle to each other is asymmetric in opposite directions. A key characteristic of this asymmetric transmission is that the polarization of the transmitted light is changed. Simulation results reveal that transmission of 0.92 in one direction and 10(-5) in the opposite direction can be obtained at normal incidence at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Because of their high optical performance and loose fabrication requirements, the structures may provide practical applications in the control of light transmission.

Abstract:As one of the recent advances of optics and photonics, plasmonics has enabled unprecedented optical designs. Having a vectorial configuration of surface plasmon field, metallic nanostructures offer efficient solutions in polarization control with a very limited sample thickness. Many compact polarization devices have been realized using such metallic nanostructures. However, in most of these devices, the functions were usually simple and limited to a few polarization states. Here, we demonstrated a plasmonic polarization generator that can reconfigure an input polarization to all types of polarization states simultaneously. The plasmonic polarization generator is based on the interference of the in-plane (longitudinal) field of the surface plasmons that gives rise to versatile near-field polarization states on a metal surface, which have seldom been considered in previous studies. With a well-designed nanohole array, the in-plane field of SPPs with proper polarization states and phases can be selectively scattered out to the desired light beams. A manifestation of eight focusing beams with well-routed polarizations was experimentally demonstrated. Our design offers a new route to achieve the full control of optical polarizations and possibly advance the development in photonic information processing.
High Discrimination Ratio, Broadband Circularly Polarized Light Photodetector Using Dielectric Achiral Nanostructures

Abstract:The on-chip measurement of polarization states plays an increasingly crucial role in modern sensing and imaging applications. While high-performance monolithic linearly polarized photodetectors have been extensively studied, integrated circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors are still hindered by inadequate discrimination capability. In this study, we employ achiral all-dielectric nanostructures to develop a broadband CPL photodetector with an impressive discrimination ratio of ~107 at the wavelength of 405 nm, significantly surpassing its counterparts by two orders of magnitude. Our device shows outstanding CPL discrimination capability across the visible band without requiring intensity calibration. Its function mechanism is based on the CPL-dependent near-field modes within achiral structures: under left or right CPL illumination, distinct near-field modes are excited, resulting in asymmetric irradiation of the two electrodes and generating a photovoltage with directions determined by the chirality of the incident light field. The proposed design strategy facilitates the realization of ultra-compact CPL detection across diverse materials, structures, and spectral ranges, presenting a novel avenue for achieving high-performance monolithic CPL detection.

Abstract:A single-layer plasmonic structure, i.e., a metal film milled with rectangular grooves and holes that are orthogonal to each other, has been proposed for polarization manipulation. With the structure, we suggest theoretically that transmissive and efficient 90 degrees linear-polarization rotation can be achieved. Analytical results indicate that the polarization rotation stems from the waveguide resonance and the strong coupling between the grooves and holes, resulting in an obvious difference from plasmonic wave plates. Abstract:The aluminum wire‐grid is designed as a broadband circular‐linear polarization converter and a linear polarizer, which is further cascaded to form a broadband circular polarizer with strong circular polarization transmittance difference and circular polarization extinction ratio. The proposed circular polarizer can be fabricated by nano imprint lithography and nano transfer printing with the merits of low cost, and high efficiency. A universal design and fabrication scheme is proposed for a cascaded aluminum wire‐grid‐based vis–NIR circular polarizer. The aluminum wire‐grid is designed as a broadband circular‐linear polarization converter and a broadband linear polarizer, which is further cascaded to form a circular polarizer with strong circular polarization transmittance difference (CPTD) and circular polarization extinction ratio (CPER) in vis–NIR. By increasing the distance between the circular‐linear polarization converter and the linear polarizer, the redshift of the CPTD and CPER peaks is realized and used to design a novel circular polarizer to work better in the operating wavelength. Anisotropic thin‐film interference is revealed to be responsible for the redshift phenomenon. Furthermore, the circular polarizer is fabricated by nano imprint lithography and nano transfer printing with the merits of relatively low cost, and high production efficiency. With such flexibility in the design and fabrication, cascaded aluminum wire‐grid may serve as a tunable compact circular polarizer, and it is also easy to integrate with the wire‐grid‐based linear polarizer to realize the fabrication of the division‐of‐focal‐plane full Stokes polarimeter.

Abstract:Analyzing the polarization of a circularly polarized light is a critical issue. We have fabricated a spiral nano-structure on the Au film by using focused ion beam etching technique. The fabricated structure can be used as a plasmonic circular polarization analyzer. By designing the relative orientation of two nano-apertures in the spiral structural unit, the propagation direction of the surface plasmon polaritons excited by circularly polarized light of opposite handedness can be controlled. Therefore, the spiral structure could be used to accurately determine the helicity of the excited circularly polarized light. Based on the results of scanning near-field optical microscopy, the obtained circular polarization extinction ratio of this structure was above 500. This structure can be used for a flexible detecting size and a very wide spectrum.
