Abstract:Gold (Au) nanoparticles are applied successfully in catalysis, plasmonics, biosensing, and tumor diagnosis among other fields. Many pivotal chemical and biological processes depend fundamentally on surface properties. However, the distinction between electronic surface states and bulk states may become fuzzy in nanometer-sized objects. Here, we prepared crystalline Au nanoparticles, including icosahedra on SrTiO3 in ultra-high vacuum. Combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy, imaging, and model calculations, we show that a Shockley-type surface state exists on the < 111 > facets of Au particles with sizes down to 5 nm. Moreover, we uncover that on icosahedra, whose facets are all oriented along the < 111 > directions, the surface-state electrons are confined to each triangular facet. As a recent theoretical study suggested the Shockley surface state to be topologically nontrivial, Au nanoparticles may open an interdisciplinary field linking topological physics and nanotechnology.
