Abstract:By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise microwave signal with phase noise levels of -24 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -111 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -147 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offsets for a 11.14 GHz carrier with only a free-running input pump. The easy operation of the Brillouin-Kerr soliton microcomb with excellent performance makes our scheme promising for practical applications.

Abstract:Optical artificial neural networks (ONNs), analog computing hardware tailored for machine learning, have significant potential for ultra-high computing speed and energy efficiency. We propose a new approach to architectures for ONNs based on integrated Kerr micro-comb sources that is programmable, highly scalable and capable of reaching ultra-high speeds. We experimentally demonstrate the building block of the ONN, a single neuron perceptron, by mapping synapses onto 49 wavelengths of a micro-comb to achieve a high single-unit throughput of 11.9 Giga-FLOPS at 8 bits per FLOP, corresponding to 95.2 Gbps. We test the perceptron on simple standard benchmark datasets, handwritten-digit recognition and cancer-cell detection, achieving over 90% and 85% accuracy, respectively. This performance is a direct result of the record small wavelength spacing (49GHz) for a coherent integrated microcomb source, which results in an unprecedented number of wavelengths for neuromorphic optics. Finally, we propose an approach to scaling the perceptron to a deep learning network using the same single micro-comb device and standard off-the-shelf telecommunications technology, for high-throughput operation involving full matrix multiplication for applications such as real-time massive data processing for unmanned vehicle and aircraft tracking.
Analysis of real-time spectral interference using a deep neural network to reconstruct multi-soliton dynamics in mode-locked lasers

Abstract:The dynamics of optical soliton molecules in ultrafast lasers can reveal the intrinsic self-organized characteristics of dissipative systems. The photonic time-stretch dispersive Fourier transformation (TS-DFT) technology provides an effective method to observe the internal motion of soliton molecules real time. However, the evolution of complex soliton molecular structures has not been reconstructed from TS-DFT data satisfactorily. We train a residual convolutional neural network (RCNN) with simulated TS-DFT data and validate it using arbitrarily generated TS-DFT data to retrieve the separation and relative phase of solitons in three- and six-soliton molecules. Then, we use RCNNs to analyze the experimental TS-DFT data of three-soliton molecules in a passive mode-locked laser. The solitons can exhibit different phase evolution processes and have compound vibration frequencies simultaneously. The phase evolutions exhibit behavior consistent with single-shot autocorrelation results. Compared with autocorrelation methods, the RCNN can obtain the actual phase difference and analyze soliton molecules comprising more solitons and almost equally spaced soliton pairs. This study provides an effective method for exploring complex soliton molecule dynamics.

Abstract:Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), inspired by biological visual cortex systems, are a powerful category of artificial neural networks that can extract the hierarchical features of raw data to greatly reduce the network parametric complexity and enhance the predicting accuracy. They are of significant interest for machine learning tasks such as computer vision, speech recognition, playing board games and medical diagnosis [1-7]. Optical neural networks offer the promise of dramatically accelerating computing speed to overcome the inherent bandwidth bottleneck of electronics. Here, we demonstrate a universal optical vector convolutional accelerator operating beyond 10 Tera-OPS (TOPS operations per second), generating convolutions of images of 250,000 pixels with 8-bit resolution for 10 kernels simultaneously - enough for facial image recognition. We then use the same hardware to sequentially form a deep optical CNN with ten output neurons, achieving successful recognition of full 10 digits with 900 pixel handwritten digit images with 88% accuracy. Our results are based on simultaneously interleaving temporal, wavelength and spatial dimensions enabled by an integrated microcomb source. We show that this approach is scalable and trainable to much more complex networks for demanding applications such as unmanned vehicle and real-time video recognition.

Abstract:Abstract Soliton frequency combs generated in microresonators offer powerful tools for optical metrology, due to its high time-frequency resolution. Here, via exciting the intracavity Brillouin laser in a high Q monolithic fiber resonator, we generate a pair of orthogonal Kerr soliton combs, which share the same repetition (≈ 1 GHz) but different central wavelengths (≈ 10 GHz). Difference of their carrier-envelope-offset frequencies (Δfceo) is determined by the Brillouin-resonance overlap spectrally. We find that beat notes of the Δfceo is mechanically sensitive to external force, demonstrating a high sensitivity 0.3 kHz/µN, with a linear measurement range up to 7.3 mN. Leveraging the noise-filtering and lock-in heterodyne measurement, we obtain a detect limit down to 520 pN. This work reveals a novel paradigm of dual-soliton microcomb multiplexing pumped by one single laser, and combines the ultrahigh resolution dual-comb strategy and fiber sensor technology. It may open a way towards the realization of versatile and powerful microcomb based sensors with simple structure, which could be widely attractive in precision measurements such as high precision gyroscope, mechanical tracing, and material science examination.

Abstract:The emergence of soliton microcombs has catalyzed significant advancements in a wide range of applications, including optical communication, precision metrology, and astronomical calibration. Despite the existing benefits, soliton microcombs generated in passive microcavities often face significant limitations in promoting comb power and nonlinear efficiency. On the other hand, generating soliton combs within active microresonators has remained challenging due to the confined cavity volume for doping and substantial opto-thermal effects. In this study, we successfully achieve dissipative Kerr solitons in an active microcavity by sintering erbium ions (Er3+) onto its surface. The introduction of Er3+ significantly boosts the power of the microcomb within the cavity, bypassing the traditional requirement for an external erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and paving the way toward high quality soliton microcomb integration. By operating the system below the lasing threshold, the actively optical-assisted microcomb maintains the low-noise advantages of coherently driven solitons. Our research demonstrates that the optical excitation of Er3+ facilitates the tunability of cavity losses, thereby providing a method to dynamically control the soliton properties. This enables soliton operation at a lower threshold, with a larger soliton access range, wider comb span, and enhanced comb power. The increased intracavity power and enhanced Kerr nonlinear process also enable the generation of EDFA-free solitons in a low-Q microcavity, paving the way for simplifying microcomb devices. These findings open new avenues for the formation of active cavity solitons (ACSs), where the combination of coherent and incoherent pumping within a microcavity yields superior performance and increased practicality.

Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.
Generation of Kerr soliton microcomb in a normally dispersed lithium niobate microdisk resonator by mode trimming

Abstract:Anomalous microresonator dispersion is mandatory for Kerr soliton microcomb formation, which depends critically on the geometry of the microresonator and can hardly be tuned after the structure is made. To date, cavity-based microcombs have only been generated with fundamental whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of anomalous dispersion in microresonators. Moreover, microcomb generation in highly Raman-active platforms such as lithium niobate (LN) microresonators frequently suffers from stimulated Raman scattering and mode crossing due to the existence of multiple families of high-order WGMs. Here, we reveal a unique Kerr soliton microcomb generation mechanism through mode trimming in a weakly perturbed LN microdisk resonator. Remarkably, the soliton comb is generated with fundamental WGMs of normal dispersion and free from the mode crossing and Raman scattering effects. A robust soliton with a spectrum spanning from 1450 nm to 1620 nm at an on-chip pump power of 35 mW. Our discovery offers a powerful solution to circumvent the stringent requirements on high-precision dispersion engineering and termination of Raman excitation for soliton generation in the high-Q microdisk.

Abstract:Kerr soliton microcombs in microresonators have been a prominent miniaturized coherent light source. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the existence of Kerr solitons in an optomechanical microresonator, for which a nonlinear model is built by incorporating a single mechanical mode and multiple optical modes. Interestingly, an exotic vibrational Kerr soliton state is found, which is modulated by a self-sustained mechanical oscillation. Besides, the soliton provides extra mechanical gain through the optical spring effect, and results in phonon lasing with a red-detuned pump. Various nonlinear dynamics is also observed, including limit cycle, higher periodicity, and transient chaos. This work provides a guidance for not only exploring many-body nonlinear interactions, but also promoting precision measurements by featuring superiority of both frequency combs and optomechanics.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr-soliton combs are laser pulses regularly sustained by a localized solitary wave on top of a continuous-wave background inside a nonlinear resonator. Usually, the intrinsic interactions between the background light and solitons are weak and localized. Here, we demonstrate a strong interaction between the generated soliton comb and the background light in a Brillouin-Kerr microcomb system. This strong interaction enables the generation of a monostable single-soliton microcomb on a silicon chip. Also, new phenomena related to soliton physics including solitons hopping between different states as well as controlling the formations of the soliton states by the pump power, are observed owing to such strong interaction. Utilizing this monostable single-soliton microcomb, we achieve the 100% deterministic turnkey operation successfully without any feedback controls. Importantly, it allows to output turnkey ultra-low-noise microwave signals using a free-running pump.

Abstract:Generated in high-Q optical microresonators, dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs constitute broadband optical frequency combs with chip sizes and repetition rates in the microwave to millimeter-wave range. For frequency metrology applications such as spectroscopy, optical atomic clocks and frequency synthesizers, octave-spanning soliton microcombs generated in dispersion optimized microresonator are required, which allow self-referencing for full frequency stabilization. In addition, field-deployable applications require the generation of such soliton microcombs simple, deterministic, and reproducible. Here, we demonstrate a novel scheme to generate self-emerging solitons in integrated lithium niobate microresonators. The single soliton features a broadband spectral bandwidth with dual dispersive waves, allowing 2f-3f self-referencing. Via harnessing the photorefractive effect of lithium niobate to significantly extend the soliton existence range, we observe a spontaneous yet deterministic single-soliton formation. The soliton is immune to external perturbation and can operate continuously over 13 hours without active feedback control. Finally, via integration with a pre-programed DFB laser, we demonstrate turnkey soliton generation. With further improvement of microresonator Q and hybrid integration with chip-scale laser chips, compact soliton microcomb devices with electronic actuation can be created, which can become central elements for future LiDAR, microwave photonics and optical telecommunications.

Abstract:Generation of Kerr soliton microcombs on microresonators enables power-efficient, phase-coherent, and broadband frequency teeth generation, which has revolutionized a wide range of scientific areas such as astronomy, metrology, spectroscopy, communications, etc. However, compared with a conventional frequency scanning method that requires a complex start-up and feedback control, turnkey generation of soliton microcombs remains challenging and a more promising solution is desired. Here, we propose for the first time and numerically demonstrate that turnkey generation of soliton microcombs can be achieved on thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microresonators for polarization along the ordinary axis of lithium niobate (LN) for which the photorefractive (PR) effect dominates. The PR effect shows power-dependent refractive index change, which is strong and opposite to that of the Kerr effect and thermal effect, thus enables the self-routing and converge of the total pump-resonator detuning into the existence region of soliton. Our results show that initiated with a certain amount of initial pump-resonator detuning on either blue- or red-detuned side, generation of soliton microcombs can self-start, self-route, and finally get stable without any artificial frequency scanning. Moreover, we show that deterministic and turnkey generation of single soliton microcombs can be achieved by leveraging a phase-modulated pump laser. Thanks to the inherent electro-optic effect of LNOI, a lab-on-a-chip device with monolithically integrated high-speed phase modulators and high-Q microresonators is feasible.

Abstract:Fast-responding detector arrays are commonly used for imaging rapidly changing scenes. Besides array detectors, a single-pixel detector combined with a broadband optical spectrum can also be used for rapid imaging by mapping the spectrum into a spatial coordinate grid and then rapidly measuring the spectrum. Here, optical frequency combs generated from high-<span class="inline-formula"><math>Q</math></span> silica microresonators are used to implement this method. The microcomb is dispersed in two spatial dimensions to measure a test target. The target-encoded spectrum is then measured by multi-heterodyne beating with another microcomb having a slightly different repetition rate, enabling an imaging frame rate up to 200 kHz and fill rates as high as 48 megapixels/s. The system is used to monitor the flow of microparticles in a fluid cell. Abstract:Solitons in microresonators have spurred intriguing nonlinear optical physics and photonic applications. Here, by combining Kerr and Brillouin nonlinearities in an over-modal microcavity, we demonstrate spatial multiplexing of soliton microcombs under a single external laser pumping operation. This demonstration offers an ideal scheme to realize highly coherent dual-comb sources in a compact, low-cost and energy-efficient manner, with uniquely low beating noise. Moreover, by selecting the dual-comb modes, the repetition rate difference of a dual-comb pair could be flexibly switched, ranging from 8.5 to 212 MHz. Beyond dual-comb, the high-density mode geometry allows the cascaded Brillouin lasers, driving the co-generation of up to 5 space-multiplexing frequency combs in distinct mode families. Abstract:A shaped doublet pump pulse is proposed for a simultaneous octave-spanning soliton Kerr frequency comb generation and second-harmonic conversion in a single microresonator. The temporal soliton in the cavity is trapped atop a doublet-pulse pedestal, resulting in a greatly expanded soliton region compared to that with a general Gaussian pulse pump. The possibility of single-microresonator comb self-referencing in a single silicon nitride microring that can facilitate compact on-chip optical clocks is demonstrated via simulation.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr solitons formed in high-Q optical microresonators provide a route to miniaturized optical frequency combs that can revolutionize precision measurements, spectroscopy, sensing, and communication. In the past decade, a myriad of integrated material platforms have been extensively studied and developed to create photonic-chip-based soliton combs. However, the photo-thermal effect in integrated optical microresonators has been a major issue preventing simple and reliable soliton generation. Several sophisticated techniques to circumvent the photo-thermal effect have been developed. In addition, instead of the single-soliton state, emerging applications in microwave photonics and frequency metrology prefer multi-soliton states. Here, we demonstrate an approach to manage the photo-thermal effect and facilitate soliton generation. The approach is based on a single phase-modulated pump, where the generated blue-detuned sideband synergizes with the carrier and thermally stabilizes the microresonator. We apply this technique and demonstrate deterministic soliton generation of 19.97 GHz repetition rate in an integrated silicon nitride microresonator. Furthermore, we develop a program to automatically address to the target N-soliton state, in addition to the single-soliton state, with a near 100% success rate and as short as 10 s time consumption. Our method is valuable for soliton generation in essentially any platform, even with strong photo-thermal effects, and can promote wider applications of soliton frequency comb systems for microwave photonics, telecommunications, and frequency metrology.
