Abstract:Thin devices with large areas have strong and omnidirectional absorption over a wide bandwidth and are in demand for applications such as energy harvesting, structural color, and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging). Despite persistent efforts in the design and fabrication of such devices, the simultaneous realization of all these desired properties remains a challenge. In this study, a 190-nm-thick metasurface with an area of 3 cm2, incorporating dielectric cylinder arrays, a chromium layer, a silicon nitride (SiNx) layer, and an aluminum layer is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The developed device achieves an average absorptivity of ∼99% (97% in the experiment) in the entire visible spectrum 400-700 nm. Moreover, it exhibits strong absorption over a wide range of incident angles (∼91% and 90% at 60° in the calculation and experiment, respectively). Importantly, the feasibility of applying the developed metasurface absorber to solar thermophotovoltaics and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging) has been explored. Moreover, the photoresist can be replaced by other glues and easily scaled up to a large area using the roll-to-roll nanoimprinting process. With the excellent spectral properties and performance, this device is promising for large-area applications.

Abstract:Metamaterials (MMs) have received wide attention due to their strong ability to control wave propagation. Here we propose a thin MM that can realize broadband absorption, as well as in-band phase-controlled reflection. It absorbs more than 90% energy of the incident circularly polarized (CP) light between 7.94-9.76 and 10.99-12.26 GHz and, meanwhile, works as a half-wave plate near 10.35 GHz. The schemes based on both natural and artificial magnetic materials have been discussed to produce the anisotropic phase. A reflection beam steering metasurface is proposed using the absorption-selective MM. The metasurface-integrated MM absorber may have important applications in aerospace technologies such as radome.

Abstract:We propose a broadband, efficient, ultra-thin metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorber with a simple single-sized disk configuration by utilizing metals with high imaginary part of permittivity (epsilon"). The physics behind this is that field dissipation is remarkably enhanced in MIM absorbers with high-epsilon" metals, significantly extending the absorption bandwidths, which are conventionally limited by magnetic resonances of MIM absorbers with low-epsilon" metals. The experimentally demonstrated MIM absorber based on tungsten with high-epsilon" yields broadband absorption from visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) with an average measured absorption of 84%. The ultra-thin and single-sized nanostructure with broadband efficient absorption facilitates the scalability to largearea photonic applications. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:A broadband, high‐absorption metamaterial absorber based on a metallic–dielectric disc structure is proposed, achieving over 90% absorbance in the 1500 to 4000 nm range with a bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber is polarization‐insensitive and capable of wide‐angle absorption, making it potentially valuable for infrared detection and imaging applications. A metamaterial absorber with broadband and high absorption based on a metal–dielectric disc–ring structure is proposed. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze the absorption performance of the absorber. The results show that the absorption of the proposed absorber is more than 90% in the band range from 1500 to 4000 nm with an absorption bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber has polarization‐insensitive properties due to the high symmetry of the structure. In addition, the absorber has large angle absorption characteristics with average absorptions of 92% and 82% at an incidence angle of 60° in TM and TE modes. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the metal interface, and cavity resonance between the circular slits work in synergy to enhance the absorption and broaden the absorption bandwidth. The proposed absorber has a simple structure, easily accessible material, and excellent performance with potential applications in infrared detection, imaging, and other fields.

Abstract:A broadband plasmonic metamaterial absorber with near perfect multiband absorption in the infrared region is designed using a metal-insulator-metal configuration and fabricated using photolithography. The metal-insulator-metal configuration consists of a Ti microdisk array, a SiO2 insulator spacer, and an Al bottom layer. The multiband absorption occurs with near perfect absorption at 4.8-7.5 mu m and 9.7-10.5 mu m. Ultra-broadband absorption in the mid-IR wavelength range between 3-14 mu m is realized by adding a rough photoresist layer on top of the periodic microdisk structures. The multiband absorption is achieved through the combined mechanisms including plasmonic surface lattice resonance, gap plasmon resonance, Fabry-Perot cavity resonance, and the intrinsic phonon-polariton absorption of SiO2. Abstract:Here we present a broadband all-dielectric metasurface absorber, where elliptical nanohole arrays are entirely embedded into the doped device layer of silicon-on-insulator wafer. From the intraband carrier transitions, the device exhibits enhanced near infrared absorption with a 3-dB bandwidth ∼35.3 nm. By the method of detailed multipole decomposition, we find that magnetic dipole resonances predominantly contribute to the absorption enhancement; in addition, the large bandwidth is attributed to the superposition of multiple absorption peaks from the resonances. The absorber designed in this simple structure and compatible with the CMOS techniques is promising for the broadband photodetectors of Si and even Ge. Differently, for the Ge-based photodetectors, the photocarrier excitation originates from interband transitions.

Abstract:The ability to trap light in an ultrathin photoactive layer has been of great significance for applications ranging from optoelectronics, energy to spectroscopy. However, the current broadband light trapping suffers from undesirable direct Joule heat output with plasmonics or bulkiness with photonics. Here, we report a light-trapping photonic structure using an ultrathin all-dielectric super-absorbing metasurface. This presented photonic structure features asymmetrically coupled magnetic resonances, which eliminate reflection and transmission simultaneously by introducing destructive interference between the backscattered field of the resonance and the direct reflected field of the highly reflective Fabry–Pérot background. In particular, this photonic structure enables broadband light trapping by placing nanostructures of different sizes in a supercell. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate broadband (550–1280 nm) super absorption (>50%) within an ultrathin (∼200 nm) all-dielectric germanium metasurface. This work provides a design paradigm for harvesting light through flat photonic structures at the nanoscale and paves the way for cost-effective light management.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons losses have long been considered as a fatal shortcoming of plasmonics based information transport. Here, we propose a plasmonic absorber utilizing this shortcoming to absorb the stray light in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Benefiting from adiabatic mode evolution, its performance is insensitive to incident wavelength with bandwidth larger than 300 nm, and is robust against surrounding environment and temperature. Besides, the use of metal enables it to be very compact and beneficial to thermal dissipation. With this 40-m-long absorber, the absorption efficiency can be over 99.8% at 1550 nm, with both the reflectivity and transmittance reduced to < 0.1%. Such a device may find various applications in PICs, to eliminate the residual strong pump laser or stray light.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers with perfect absorption properties are essential in various fields. A multilayer metamaterial disc absorber has been designed and analyzed using a finite-difference time-domain method. In the wavelength range from 300 nm to 3000 nm, this metamaterial absorber absorbs more than 90%. The metamaterial absorber is polarisation-insensitive due to its symmetric structure. On the other hand, the designed absorber still provides a high absorbance (>80%) at an incidence angle of 60°. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), cavity resonance, local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and inter-resonance interactions dominate the absorber for efficient absorption and extended absorption bandwidth.
Narrowband perfect metasurface absorber based on impedance matching

Abstract:We presented a numerical investigation of a metamaterial narrowband perfect absorber conducted via a finite element method based on commercially available COMSOL software. The periodic array of silicon meta-atoms (MAs) are placed on 80 nm thick gold layer. The broadband light at normal incidence is blocked by the gold layer and silicon MAs are used to excite the surface plasmon by scattering light through it. Maximum absorption of 95.7 % is obtained at the resonance wavelength of 1137.5 nm due to the perfect impedance matching of the electric and magnetic dipoles. The absorption is insensitive to the wide-angle of incidence ranging from 0 to 80 degrees. Abstract:Metamaterials are widely studied in bio-photonics because of their flexible and tunable resonance wavelengths in the near-infrared region and their particular relevance to biological tissues. In this paper, we propose for the first time a perfect absorber that is switchable between triple-band and dual-band absorption. The narrowband metamaterial perfect absorber has a conventional metal–dielectric–metal structure, which consists of an array of silver disks, a silica dielectric layer and a gold substrate. Its working performance is mainly determined by the height, radius and period of the top silver disks. By adjusting these parameters, the perfect absorber can be switched between triple-band and dual-band absorption with the peaks showing close to 100% absorbance. This makes it possible to use it as a multifunctional absorber in various applications, such as filters and sensors.

Abstract:We propose a design of an ultra-broadband absorber based on a thin metamaterial nanostructure composed of a periodic array of titanium-silica (Ti-SiO2) cubes and an aluminum (Al) bottom film. The proposed structure can achieve nearly perfect absorption with an average absorbance of 97% spanning a broad range from visible to near-infrared (i.e., from 354 nm to 1066 nm), showing a 90% absorption bandwidth over 712 nm, and the peak absorption is up to 99.8%. The excitation of superior surface plasmon resonance combined with the resonance induced by the metal-insulator-metal Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity leads to this broadband perfect absorption. The polarization and angle insensitivity is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption performance with oblique incidences for both TE- and TM-polarized waves. In addition, we discuss the impact of various metal materials and geometry structure on absorption performance in detail. The proposed broadband metamaterial absorber shows a promising prospect in applications such as solar cell, infrared detection, and imaging. Moreover, the use of a thin titanium cap and an aluminum film instead of noble metals has the potential to reduce production cost in applications. Abstract:Broadband absorbers generally consist of plasmonic cavities coupled to metallic resonators separated by a dielectric film, and they are vertically stacking configurations. In this work, we propose an ultra-broadband nanowire metamaterial absorber composed of an array of vertically aligned dielectric nanowires with coaxial metallic rings. The absorber shows strong absorption from 0.2 to 7 μm with an average absorption larger than 91% due to the excitation of gap surface plasmon polariton modes in Fabry–Perot-like resonators. Moreover, a refractory dielectric cladding can be added to improve the thermal stability of the absorber, showing a negligible impact on its absorption performance. The proposed absorber may find potential applications in solar energy harvesting, infrared imaging and spectroscopy, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of integration of infrared devices and the wideband absorption of infrared light, a novel ultra-broadband, high-absorbance and polarization-independent metamaterial absorber working in the long-wave infrared region (8 similar to 14 mu m) is designed. By inserting a dielectric layer around the top metal of a metal-dielectric-metal metamaterial absorber to form a metasurface, the resonance intensity and absorption bandwidth can be improved. The structure has an average absorptivity greater than 90% in the range of 8.0 mu m to 13.6 mu m, covering most of the long-wave infrared atmospheric window bands, which is of great significance to infrared devices. The results indicate that the excitation of Propagating Surface Plasmon (PSP) modes and embedded cavity modes generated by the combination of dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polaritons waveguide and cavity modes contribute to broadband absorption. Moreover, the resonant wavelength of the resonance mode can be tuned by relevant parameters. The results of this paper provide a reference for the design of tunable broadband long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) absorbers. It is suggested that this design method can be extended to the medium wavelength infrared band, the very long-wavelength infrared band and others.
Three peak metamaterial broadband absorbing materials based on ZnSe-Cr-InAs stacked disk arrays

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers show great potential in many scientific and technological applications by virtue of their sub-wavelength and easy-to-adjust structure, with bandwidth as an important standard to measure the performance of the absorbers. In this study, our team designed a new broadband absorber, which consists of an indium arsenide (InAs) disk at the top, a zinc selenide (ZnSe)-chromium (Cr) stacked disk in the middle and a metal film at the bottom. Simulation results show that the absorber has remarkable absorptivity properties in the mid-long infrared band. In a wavelength range of 5.71-16.01 μm, the average absorptivity is higher than 90%. In the band of 5.86-15.49 μm, the absorptivity is higher than 95%. By simulating the electromagnetic field diagram at each resonant frequency, the reason for high broadband absorptivity is obtained. We also constructed Poynting vector diagrams to further elucidate this phenomenon. Next, we analyzed the influence of different materials and structural parameters on absorptivity properties and tested spectral response at different polarization angles and oblique incidence of the light source in the TM and TE modes. When the source is normally incident, the absorber shows polarization insensitivity. When the angle is 40°, absorptivity is still high, indicating that the absorber also possesses angle insensitivity. The broadband absorber proposed by us has good prospects in infrared detection and thermal radiators.
Bifunctional plasmonic metamaterial absorber for narrowband sensing detection and broadband optical absorption

Abstract:<p>Plasmonic perfect absorbers have attracted extensive attentions for their tremendous application potentials in the fields of sensing detection, harvesting solar energy, and saltwater purification. In this paper, we demonstrate a bifunctional plasmonic metamaterial absorber (BPMA), consisting of a multilayer planar architecture with etched upper surface, which exhibits distinguishing functions on both top and bottom sides. The dark flat bottom side of the BPMA can provide broadband perfect absorption for efficient capturing solar energy, while its metamaterial-based top side can achieve narrowband perfect absorption for high-sensitivity sensing detection. Finely optimizing the planar film thickness, the dark bottom side can achieve an average light absorption up to 84.09% from visible to near-infrared region under normal irradiance, which can stem from the high extinction coefficient of titanium inside multilayered waveguides and anti-reflection coatings effect. In addition, originating from surface plasmon polaritons Bloch mode, the narrowband absorption on the upper side exhibits narrow line width spectral fractures with high peak-to-dip signal ration, making it an ideal platform for high-sensitivity detection. The demonstration of this bifunctional perfect absorber on a single substrate provides a potential solution for multifunction photonic integration.</p>

Abstract:We have designed and fabricated broadband metamaterial absorbers working in the mid-infrared regime by employing the multilayered metal-dielectric-metal resonant stacks. Magnetic resonance is excited in each resonant stack, and the absorption peak wavelength is tuned by the dielectric constant of the dielectric layer. By stacking several resonant stacks with different dielectric layers, the absorption bandwidth can be effectively broadened through the hybridization of magnetic resonances in all resonant stacks. The presented design approach is an effective complement for constructing broadband metamaterial absorbers, and also meaningful in the design of other photonic devices.

Abstract:All-dielectric metasurfaces have aroused significant interest for terahertz (THz) absorption. However, traditional all-dielectric metasurfaces are usually not convenient to achieve dynamic modulation. To address this problem, we made a nanocomposite whose THz dielectric constant is responsive to light. A template printing method was used to pattern this nanocomposite on a flat substrate with a wide variety of shapes. Specifically, a THz absorber with cylindrical array was fabricated by this plasmonic nanocomposite. It shows that the dielectric constant of the nanocomposite can be effectively tuned by laser illumination and thus to realize active tuning of absorption peak of the absorber. Further, double layer metasurfaces were prepared by double printing, and a tunable broadband absorber was obtained. While this work shows immense potential in THz absorption, it may provide a powerful platform for other THz functional devices as well.
Dual-band Perfect Absorber for a Mid-Infrared Photodetector Based on a Dielectric Metal Metasurface

Abstract:Mid-infrared thermal detectors have very important applications in the aerospace and military fields. However, due to the low heat transfer efficiency and slow response time, their application has been greatly restricted. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a dual-band perfect absorber for a mid-infrared detector based on a dielectric metal metasurface, and the optical and thermal properties are analyzed in detail. Simulation results show that the two narrow absorption peaks, corresponding to the absorption value of 97.5% at λ = 6.142 μm with λ FWHM ≈ 40 nm and 99.7% at λ = 7.795 μm with λ FWHM ≈ 80 nm , respectively, are achieved, and their different dependences on the structural parameters have been studied. A thermal detector at room temperature with total response time within 1.3 ms for dual-band and 0.4 ms for single-band is realized when the incident light flux is 1.0 W / cm 2 for an average temperature increase of Δ T ≈ 1.0 K . Our study offers a promising approach for designing a narrowband mid-infrared perfect absorber and a high-performance photodetector in nano-integrated photonics.
