Abstract:Abstract Loess sequences of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) compose one of the most complete Neogene–Quaternary terrestrial paleoclimatic archives. Understanding the CLP's sediment sources is critical to tracing Asian aridification, atmospheric circulation patterns, and Asian monsoon evolution. Commonly, the sediments that compose the Quaternary strata of the CLP are considered largely homogeneous, and thus numerous studies have applied a uniform source model when attempting to use CLP-derived proxies as paleoclimate indicators. Here we present large-n detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology data from the Quaternary CLP. These data support spatial variability in sediment provenance across the CLP. At least three distinct provenance zones are recognized for Quaternary loess strata: central western, eastern, and northeastern. These zones received sediment primarily from their neighboring river systems. This finding conflicts with the classic views that attribute the Quaternary loess principally to the deserts north and west of the CLP. We conclude that fluvial processes, and thus precipitation, played an important and previously underemphasized role in Quaternary dust production in northern China. Furthermore, nonuniformity in CLP Quaternary sediment provenance raises questions about the validity of using paleoclimate information archived in the CLP to make sweeping regional interpretations.

Abstract:The Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) covers an extensive area over 440,000 km(2) and provides an unprecedented terrestrial record of Neogene climate. However, it is still unclear whether the provenance of these loess deposits is uniform or contains spatial and temporal differences. Here this is addressed by comparing detrital-zircon age spectra of typical loess and paleosol samples from three distant sites located at the western, middle, and southeastern parts of the CLP. Our results reveal that the zircon age spectra not only change between loess and paleosol layers but also vary from the western to the eastern CLP, at least during the last glacial cycle. The discrepancies of the zircon age spectra among different sites suggest that the loess provenance of CLP is heterogeneous and spatially variable, although it has been suggested that the mineralogical, elemental and isotopic compositions of loess deposits on CLP are highly homogenous spatially and in glacial-interglacial cycles. Abstract:Abstract The Chinese Loess Plateau, the world’s largest and oldest loess record, preserves evidence of Asia’s long-term dust source dynamics, but there is uncertainty over the source of the deposits. Recent single-grain detrital zircon U-Pb age analysis has progressed this issue, but debates remain about source changes, and the generation and interpretation of zircon data. To address this, we analyze different groupings of new and existing datasets from the Loess Plateau and potential sources. We also present the results of a first high resolution sampling, multi-proxy provenance analysis of Beiguoyuan loess using U-Pb dating of detrital zircons and detrital garnet geochemistry. The data shows that some small source differences seem to exist between different areas on the Loess Plateau. However, sediment source appears to be unchanging between loess and palaeosols, supporting a recent material recycling hypothesis. Our zircon and garnet data demonstrates, however, that Beiguoyuan experienced a temporary, abrupt source shift during the last glacial maximum, implying that local dust sources became periodically active during the Quaternary. Our results highlight that grouping data to achieve bigger datasets could cause identification of misleading trends. Additionally, we suggest that multi-proxy single-grain approaches are required to gain further insight into Chinese Loess Plateau dust sources.

Abstract:Loess deposits in the Eastern Qinling Mountains (central China) provide a detailed archive for reconstructing the paleoenvironment during early hominin occupation. The study of the loess deposits also provides a unique opportunity to understand Pleistocene atmospheric circulation in this transitional climatic zone. However, the provenance and formation of the loess deposits were not well understood until now. In this paper, we report on new geomorphologic investigations and depositional analyses of the loess deposits. The results suggest that Gobi deserts and drylands in northern and northwestern China were one of the dust sources. These loess deposits show similar geochemical composition as the average upper crust (UCC), and may indicate that they experienced multiple sedimentary processes, with the dust being well mixed before deposition. However, the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios (between 0.719650 and 0.721043) and extremely low ɛNd(0) values (between −11.98 and −18.97), which are different from the typical loess of the Chinese Loess Plateau, demonstrate that proximal clastic sediments that were apparently derived from the weathered Qinling orogen bedrocks, form the other important source for the loess deposits. The chemical Index of Alteration [CIA = Al2O3/(Al2O3 + CaO* + Na2O + K2O) × 100] and Chemical Proxy of Alteration [CPA = 100 × Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Na2O)], both in molar proportions show that the loess has experienced intense pedogenesis. We conclude that the loess deposit has a mixed provenance. The palaeoclimate in the Eastern Qinling Mountains remained mild in the glacial periods due to the topography and unique geographic locations, providing a suitable place for hominine occupation.

Abstract:The Chinese Loess Plateau in north central China contains one of the most valuable Cenozoic climate archives on land. Establishing the origin of this substantial archive of aeolian sediments is critical for the interpretation of loess climate proxies, past atmospheric wind patterns and changing climatic/tectonic controls on erosion over potentially the past 25Ma. Despite this significance there are a number of disagreements over the precise source areas and the extent to which these vary through time and across the plateau. To address this, we utilize a multi-technique, approach of combined detrital single-grain zircon U–Pb dating and heavy mineral analysis to establish the sources of loess through the Quaternary and constrain their variation geographically across the Loess Plateau. We combine our data with suitable published single-grain datasets from loess and possible source regions. The results demonstrate a dramatic spatial heterogeneity of dust sources across the plateau. Sites to the west of the Loess Plateau show strong affinity to the Yellow River and the northern Tibetan Plateau, while further east the influence of North-China-Craton-derived material becomes more significant (Fig. 1). This spatial variability in source implies a far more complex relationship to dust sources than previously envisioned. The provenance of loess/soil units also varies through time, although there is no consistent relationship between these shifts and changing glacial/interglacial periods, as hypothesized previously. This variation demonstrates highly dynamic and variable dust sources and transport modes that are influenced by abrupt climate shifts within individual glacial–interglacial episodes, and potentially the dynamics of the Yellow River system.
Tracing the Provenance of Loess and Red Clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau Using the U-Pb Dating and Single-size Zircon Size

Abstract:The loess—paleosol sequences of the Chinese Loess Plateau provide one of Earth's most complete and intensively studied terrestrial records of climate change. However,the following questions are still controversial issues: 1. Where is the eolian source of the loess? 2. Is the provenance of the Quaternary loess different from the Tertiary Red Clay and does the provenance of the Quaternary alterative loess—paleosol sequences change? Here we apply single-grain zircon U-Pb age data for red clay,coupled with some previous data and single-size zircon size to analyze the source of eolian deposits on the Chinese Loess Plateau. We conclude that the gobi( stony desert) in southern Mongolia and the adjoining gobi and sand deserts in China are the dominant source areas of the Loess Plateau,with a small portion coming from northern Tibetan Plateau,rather than mainly deriving from northern Tibetan Plateau and Qaidam Basin; the provenance of red clay is partly influenced by the close by bedrock,and zircon detrital of the Chaona red clay during 6. 2 ~ 3. 6 Ma partly derive from the Liupan Shan. The provenances of loess around 0. 12 Ma,0. 86 Ma and 1. 25 Ma don't change obviously,but the provenances of loess and red clay deposited at 2. 6Ma and 3. 6Ma changes obviously.

Abstract:Eolian dust deposits in north China provide an excellent means of determining past variations in continental paleoclimate and atmospheric circulation. However, debate still exists on which deserts in east Asia are the dominant sources of Chinese loess and whether the dust provenance has shifted significantly at different time scales. Here we present new constraints on the provenance of fine‐grained dust deposited on the central Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) by combining electron spin resonance signal intensity and crystallinity index of fine‐grained quartz contained in samples from two loess‐paleosol sequences. Our results show that the fine‐grained dust deposits on the CLP originate mainly from the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia and the sandy deserts in northern China (primarily the Badain Juran and Tengger deserts), rather than from the Taklimakan desert in western China, at least during the last climatic cycle. The dominant source of fine‐grained dust varied significantly, from southern Mongolia during cold periods, to northern China during warm periods. The glacial‐interglacial provenance fluctuations are strongly coupled with changes in the intensity of the near‐surface northwesterly winter monsoon.

Abstract:The origin and provenance of aeolian deposits in China have been controversial for a long time in terms of the spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Recent studies have magnified this complexity. In this study, we conducted the UPb dating and grain morphological study of detrital zircons from the continuous aeolian deposits in the southeastern Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Our results indicate that the upper Pliocene Red Clay in this study is dominantly of local origin and has similar components to the overlying Quaternary loess. The Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NTP)-Gobi Altay Shan and western North China Craton-North Qinling are the primary and secondary sources of the Quaternary aeolian deposits, respectively. No obvious provenance changes were observed during glacial-interglacial cycles; however, the aeolian deposits became more and more like the deposits in the central CLP with the decrease of sedimentary age. Under the force of tectonic uplift and climate deterioration, the enhanced and topographically constrained winter monsoon has made the NTP-derived materials more dominant since the Quaternary.

Abstract:Provenance of the silt on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is essential for the paleo-environmental interpretation of the thick eolian deposits, but is highly debated. The controversy mainly comes from the multi-interpretation of similar geochemical signatures of potential source areas (PSAs). This work applies the (U-234/U-238) activity ratio as a new source tracer, because it can distinguish particles with different transporting and recycling histories regardless of petrological origin. The (U-234/U-238) activity ratio of a fine particle decreases progressively after its production because of the increasing fraction of the U-234 precursor ejected out of the particle surface, due to the recoiling effect associated with the a decay of U-238. Distinct spatial patterns of (U-234/U-238) can be found for the sediments in PSAs and the loess on the CLP. When combined with other constraints, the new findings indicate that the CLP loess can be best explained by the mixing of three end-member dust sources on the northwestern transportation trajectory, namely (1) the Gobi Desert, (2) the Ordos Desert, and (3) the Qilian Mountains. A contribution from the Yellow River is also possible but may not be significant. The identified source partition implies that the eolian silt is mainly produced by processes in the 'High Asia' mountains and, partly, by erosion of the exposed clastic rocks. This new constraint on the production and transportation of eolian dust has great implications for the proxy interpretation of loess related to atmospheric circulation, dust accumulation rate, and chemical indexes.
Quantitative Estimation of the Contribution of Dust Sources to Chinese Loess Using Detrital Zircon U‐Pb Age Patterns

Abstract:The origin and provenance of the loess deposits of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) are still debated. In order to pinpoint the dust sources, surface samples from the piedmont of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau, the Gobi Altai Mountains, and modern eolian dunes from the Tengger desert and Mu Us sand field were analyzed by using the detrital zircon dating technique. In order to quantitatively discriminate the content of different potential sources, zircon grains of different ages were grouped according to their tectonic origin. Zircon grains aged from 1300 to 550Ma were assigned to the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau, and grains aged from 550 to 0Ma to the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau or the Gobi Altai Mountains, or to a combination of the two. Zircon ages of around 2.8Ga to 1.3Ga may be a mixture of sources from the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau, Gobi Altai Mountains, or North China Craton. Sediments from the Tengger desert and Mu Us sand field consist of a mixture of the three sources and exhibit a high degree of spatial variability in terms of their source. In the northern part of the two deserts, 43-83% of the sediments are derived from the Gobi Altai Mountains, while in the south, material from the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau comprises 51-98% of the sediments. Loess deposits from the CLP also comprise a mixture of the three different sources, with material from the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau making the dominant contribution (65-100%), with material from the North China Craton and the Gobi Altai Mountains comprising 0-35% and 0-40% of the loess deposits, respectively. The contributions from the three sources to the loess deposits on CLP vary spatially. Application of the novel statistical method of provenance group analysis demonstrates that the loess deposits comprise a mixture of material from a broad region of northern China and that the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau material makes the dominant contribution.
Provenances of the Oldest Xiashu loess and Xuancheng loess in southern China: Implications for dust transport and dust proxies of the East Asian winter monsoon

Abstract:The loess-paleosol sequences of southern China are valuable paleoclimatic archives since the Middle Pleistocene, on the regional and global scales. Knowledge of loess provenance can shed light on dust transport and the development of paleoclimatic proxies for loess deposits. However, there is a research gap regarding the provenance of the Oldest (~0.9 Ma) Xiashu loess near the Yangtze River valley. The precise source area of the Xuancheng loess in southern China remains to be unidentified. In this study, we used elemental geochemistry and detrital zircon UPb ages to identify the sources of the Oldest Xiashu loess and Xuancheng loess in southern China. The Oldest Xiashu loess is dominantly derived from Yangtze River sediments, and part of its fine-grained dust component originates from the arid regions of Central Asia or northern China. The elemental compositions of the size-fractionated silicates and detrital zircon UPb ages of the Xuancheng loess are like those of the Shuiyang River sediments in the Xuancheng region. These results demonstrate that the Xuancheng loess is mainly the product of local dust activity in the Xuancheng regions, and thus that the Xiashu and Xuancheng loess are the products of independent dust transport processes. This spatial differentiation of loess provenance may be a widespread phenomenon in southern China, and consequently, the grain size compositions of the various loess sections in southern China cannot be used to recover paleo-wind directions on a regional scale. Overall, our study shows that when the grain size compositions from the southern China loess are used to reconstruct East Asian winter monsoon intensity, the signals from local wind fields should first be removed.

Abstract:A major concern of the geoscience community is often where sediments originally come from — this is a material's provenance. Tracing provenance allows us to determine how a material moved from its source to its sink, and thereby to evaluate the tectonic and paleoclimatic history. Detrital zircon UPb geochronology has long been used for this purpose. However, current approaches to measuring (dis)similarity in zircon age distributions may lead to erroneous geologic interpretations. Here we propose an Age-Number fractal model to characterize zircon age densities and perform intersample comparisons using multidimensional scaling. The advantage of the new method is that compared to such traditional methods as Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, it accentuates holistic rather than partial differences between two age distributions and is less-affected by data biases related to grain-size sorting and uneven sample sizes. We then use this model to unravel the debatable provenance of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) by comparing the zircon ages of Quaternary loess on the CLP with that of loose sediments from potential source regions. The model divides the CLP into four distinct provenance zones, receiving materials primarily from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, upper Yellow River, and/or Mu Us Desert. Our observations corroborate that the aeolian (East Asian monsoon and Westerlies) and fluvial (Yellow River) processes play a joint role in the dust deposition. A new pattern of spatial heterogeneity in the loess provenance is established and can be interpreted as a combined effect of atmospheric circulation patterns, availability of riverine sediments, and such factors as aridification, implying a more dynamically-evolved CLP than previous thought. Our results will aid future development and interpretation of the dust-based paleoclimatic proxies.

Abstract:Zircon samples of loess detritus were taken from Qugang loess profile in Maizhokunggar area, southern Tibetan Plateau. Based on the experimental analysis of zircon morphology, trace elements and zircon U–Pb age, provenance information and formation model of Qugang loess were discussed in combination with regional geological, topographic and geomorphological characteristics. The information of zircon morphology and trace elements suggests that the clastic zircons are of magmatic origin and proximal sedimentary characteristics. Zircon U–Pb age spectrum shows that the provenance information is significantly different from loess in the Loess Plateau and the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, related to the distribution of bedrock in regional geology, and corresponding to the Gangdese magmatic activity. The loess sediment development has a "Rock-Valley detrital material-Loess" model.

Abstract:Previous studies suggest that the northeastern Tibetan Plateau has been the major source area for the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP); this contribution was used to prove that the Yellow River played a dominant role in transporting the materials from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, making them available for the CLP. Accordingly, the proximal North China Craton is considered to have increased supply potential of dust to the CLP further eastward. However, the origin of the eastern CLP and the relationship between loess and proximal river sediments have never been systematically studied, which prevents us from working out the surface process between source and sink. In this study, we conducted U-Pb dating and analyses of the grain morphologies of detrital zircons and heavy mineral assemblages on the upper Quaternary loess and riverbed sediments on the eastern and central CLP. We also built a data set (n = 48,161) of the zircon U-Pb ages of the Quaternary loess, deserts, and potential source areas. Our results show that most loess samples on the eastern CLP were strongly affected by the North China Craton. The dust supply ability of rivers to loess is very limited. Along the dust transport path, the proximal mountains, rivers and loess can all provide dust for loess deposition. Our findings emphasize the important role proximal supply has played in the evolution of the CLP since at least the late Neogene, for example, the northeastern Tibetan Plateau for the western and central CLP, and the North China Craton for the eastern CLP.

Abstract:Marine accumulations of terrigenous sediment are widely assumed to accurately record climatic- and tectonic-controlled mountain denudation and play an important role in understanding late Cenozoic mountain uplift and global cooling. Underpinning this is the assumption that the majority of sediment eroded from hinterland orogenic belts is transported to and ultimately stored in marine basins with little lag between erosion and deposition. Here we use a detailed and multi-technique sedimentary provenance dataset from the Yellow River to show that substantial amounts of sediment eroded from Northeast Tibet and carried by the river’s upper reach are stored in the Chinese Loess Plateau and the western Mu Us desert. This finding revises our understanding of the origin of the Chinese Loess Plateau and provides a potential solution for mismatches between late Cenozoic terrestrial sedimentation and marine geochemistry records, as well as between global CO 2 and erosion records.

Abstract:The thick ‘Xiashu loess’ in southern China is distributed not only in the Yangtze River valley, but also and most extensively in the region between the Qinling Mountains and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. However, there are few studies of the provenance and climatic implications of the Xiashu loess in this latter region. Here we present the results of a provenance study of Last Glacial loess samples from twenty-two typical Xiashu loess sections, using the major and trace element composition as a provenance indicator. Seventeen of the sites are located to the north of the Yangtze River and our primary aim was to determine the provenance of the Xiashu loess within this region. Our results indicate that the alluvial plain located mainly in the present drainage area of the Huai River was the primary dust source for the Xiashu loess in this region. The occurrence of multiple local dust sources within this alluvial plain, suggested by their geochemical heterogeneity, indicates that the alluvial plain experienced intensified aridity which caused it to become a dust source for local loess deposits in northern subtropical China during the Last Glacial. Our study provides strong evidence to challenge the long-held view that the occurrence of Xiashu loess resulted from the southward incursion of the CLP loess deposits sourced from deserts of the Asian interior, and it confirms the substantial role of aridification of the present humid northern subtropical region for dust emission to the climate system during the Last Glacial.

Abstract:We present a first combined environmental magnetic and geochemical investigation of a loess–paleosol sequence (<55 ka) from the Chuanxi Plateau on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Detailed comparison between the Ganzi section and the Luochuan section from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) allows quantification of the effects of provenance and climate on pedogenic magnetic enhancement in Chinese loess. Rare earth element patterns and clay mineral compositions indicate that the Ganzi loess originates from the interior of the Tibetan Plateau. The different Ganzi and CLP loess provenances add complexity to interpretation of magnetic parameters in terms of the concentration and grain size of eolian magnetic minerals. Enhanced paleosol magnetism via pedogenic formation of ferrimagnetic nanoparticles is observed in both sections, but weaker ferrimagnetic contributions, finer superparamagnetic (SP) particles and stronger chemical weathering are found in the Ganzi loess, which indicates the action of multiple pedogenic processes that are dominated by the combined effects of mean annual precipitation (MAP), potential evapotranspiration (PET), organic matter and aluminium content. Under relatively high MAP and low PET conditions, high soil moisture favours transformation of ferrimagnetic minerals to hematite, which results in a relatively higher concentration of hematite but weaker ferrimagnetism of Ganzi loess. Initial growth of superparamagnetic (SP) particles is also documented in the incipient loess at Ganzi, which directly reflects the dynamic formation of nano-sized pedogenic ferrimagnets. A humid pedogenic environment with more organic matter and higher Al content also helps to form finer SP particles. We therefore propose that soil water balance, rather than solely rainfall, dominates the type, concentration and grain size of secondary ferrimagnetic minerals produced by pedogenesis.
Morphometrics of China's Loess Plateau: the Spatial Legacy of Tectonics, Climate, and Loess Deposition History

Abstract:The Loess Plateau in China is the largest and deepest loess deposit in the world. The surficial geology is dominated by Quaternary loess deposits of varying thicknesses, which exhibit some of the fastest erosion rates in the world. Although the plateau has been traditionally thought of as morphologically homogenous, river network morphometrics in this area are spatially variable, suggesting that landscape evolution processes across the plateau are sensitive to variability in local conditions. We divided the plateau into sub-basins and examined six DEM-derived morphometric parameters: Aspect Ratio, Anisotropic Coefficient Variation (ACV), Bifurcation Ratio, Concavity, Steepness, and Mean Junction Angle. The sub-basins exhibited low aspect ratios, high bifurcation ratios and large junction angles relative to landscapes around the world, however they varied intra-regionally relative to each other. Through the use of Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis, we observed specific spatial variation in morphometrics attributable to differences in climate, lithology and tectonics along a NW-SE transect through the plateau. Sub-basins in the elevated plateau regions are more oval with higher aspect ratios and lower ACV values while those located in down-dropped valley regions have smaller junction angles, lower concavity and steepness index. Sub-basins in the transition area between down-dropped and elevated parts of the plateau are distinguished by their high bifurcation ratios and elongated shape. We propose a conceptual model to explain the relationship between these morphometrics and the local environmental conditions.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau (TP) hosts the largest alpine ecosystem in the world, and aeolian loess is an essential component of this ecosystem and landscape. However, little is known of loess distribution and fate, owing to the climate and landscape varying dramatically between Quaternary glacial and interglacial cycles. Recent research suggests that the interior Tibetan loess did not start to accumulate until similar to 14 ka, when climate warming and wetting resulted in an increase in vegetation cover, enabling dust trapping. In this study, our extensive aeolian profile review and age analysis demonstrate that loess thickness and basal ages on the TP are very different regardless of terrain and landscape. According to loess distribution, thickness, and basal ages, we divided the TP into three zones: Zone I (western TP) and Zone III (eastern TP) are the dust source and sink areas, respectively, and Zone II (central TP) is transitional. The central TP became a dust source zone during the last glacial stage but turned into a dust sink during the last deglaciation and Holocene. The modeling results confirm that each zone has its own role in dust fixation and deflation and that these three zones are systematically interlinked by dust. Glacial-interglacial precipitation and vegetation cover changes controlled the switch in Zone II (central TP). We demonstrate that dust on the TP must have experienced enhanced excavation from west to east during the past glacial periods. During the next glacial period, the eastern TP loess may continue to accumulate, but the central TP loess will be eroded after vegetation degradation and removal, leading to a serious ecological disaster. This study provides insights into Tibetan loess accumulation patterns on a large spatial scale, improving the understanding of the past of Tibet loess and enabling predictions regarding future Tibet loess.
