Abstract:The nonlinear effect of the summer southeast wind and density on the 3D structures of the full Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) was quantified for a generally nonlinear system, using Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), China as the test site. In the tidally energetic JZB, the basic patterns of the wind- and density-driven full LRVs were found to be consistent with semi-analytical solutions but highly dependent on initial times. The wind-driven full LRVs at different tidal phases flowed similarly downwind over shoals and upwind in the deep region; however, the main branches could migrate across nearly half of the bay. A density-driven, clockwise flow was dominant in the western inner bay at low tide, but it almost disappeared at high tide. The effect of density generally enhanced the outward flow in the surface layer and inward flow in the bottom layer. Along-trajectory integrated momentum balances indicated that viscosity was the main factor responsible for the time dependence of the wind-driven full LRVs, while viscosity, barotropic and baroclinic pressure gradients were the main drivers of the intra-tidal variations in the density-driven full LRVs. Generally, the summer wind and density had opposing effects, although their influence was weaker than that of the tide and could not change the patterns of the tide-driven full LRVs. When analysing the effects of wind and density on the coastal circulation in JZB, both the 3D structures and the possibility of a high initial tidal phase dependency should be considered.

Abstract:In recent years, studies of the environmental hydrodynamics in coastal seas and tidal estuaries have placed focus on the processes which determine the “fate” of longer-term transport. The lagrangian residual current has been recognized as an important factor which affects the longer term transport processes since it is more relevant to use a Lagrangian mean velocity rather than an Eulerian mean velocity to determine the origin of Water masses. In the present paper, an attempt is made to formulate a three-dimensional dynamics on the tideinduced Lagrangian residual current and mass-transport based upon a three-dimensional weakly-nonlinear model of tides. The Lagrangian residual velocity is shown to be the sum of the mass-transport velocity, which is the sum of the Eulerian residual velocity and the Stokes’ drift velocity, and the Lagrangian residual drift velocity which is dependent on the tidal current phase. This reveals that it is the mass-transport velocity which is the tidal cycle Eulerian mean of the Lagrangian residual velocity and that the mass-transport velocity is correct to the second order of approximation rather than to the first order. And then, a new longer-term transport equation which correctly describes the Lagrangian nature of transport processes without introducing the Fickian hypothesis for tidal dispersion is derived. In fact, the convection can be correctly represented by the Eulerian mean of the Lagrangian residual velocity, as the convective velocity in the longer-term transport equation is nothing but the mass-transport velocity.
3D Numerical Computation of the Tidally Induced Lagrangian Residual Current in an Idealized Bay

Abstract:A numerical model that solves 3D first-order Lagrangian residual velocity (uL) equations is established by modifying the HAMSOM model. With this model, uL is studied in a wide, idealized bay. The results show that the vertical eddy viscosity term of Stokes’ drift (π1) in the tidal body force determines the overall flow state of uL, and the contribution of the advection term (π2) is responsible for the small correction. In addition, two types of Coriolis effects introduced into the residual current system not only enhance the lateral flow and break the symmetry of the flow regime in the bay but also slightly correct the flow state driven by the entire tidal body force. It is also found by numerical sensitivity experiments that the increase in the aspect ratio δ, implying a decrease in the topographic gradient, can simplify the residual flow state. The increase in tidal amplitude at the open boundary significantly enhances the intensity of uL and causes the residual flow regime to be more complicated in the bay. This can be ascribed to the disproportionate increase in the tidal body force. The proportion of the vertical eddy viscosity term of Stokes’ drift in the tidal body force also varies with the vertical eddy viscosity coefficient, which leads to different residual current states. Compared with the influence of incoming tidal strength on the residual current, the effect of the bottom friction coefficient on the residual current is relatively mild. An increase in the quadratic bottom friction coefficient induces an unbalanced decrease in the tidal body force. Therefore, uL decreases, but the flow regime is more complex. The influence of the nonlinear effect of the bottom friction decreases from the bay head towards the bay mouth. The residual current only changes in magnitude near the bay mouth but changes in pattern near the bay head for different bottom friction coefficients. By keeping the bottom friction coefficient in the zeroth-order tidal equations constant, the sensitivity experiment shows that uL is insensitive to the change in bottom friction coefficient in the governing equations of uL.

Abstract:On the basis of a three-dimensional weakly nonliear theory of Lagrangian residual current in the Baroclinic shallow seas, a diagnostic numerical calculation of wind-driven, thermohaline and tide-induced Lagrangian residual current in the Bohai Sea is made. The model involves the Richardson number in the eddy viscosity coefficient, wind, thcrmolialine and tidal effects in the focing terms. The runoff of the Huanghe River and a part of the Huanghai Warm Water coming from the Huanghai Sea through the Bohai Sea Strait is also considered. The velocity-splitting method is adopted. The wind-driven circu lation, thermohaline circulation and the tide-induced Lagrangian residual circulation are also obtained individually and analysed. The dynamics of the three main eddies in the Lagrangian mean circulation is discussed. Finally, the numerical result is partly verified with the observed data.
Study of Viscous-terrain Correction Term Effect on Tidal Numerical Simulation

Abstract:At present, coastal topographic irregularity and fine layer structure in shallow water are jointly considered in the most of coastal sea models, and crcoordinate transformation is normally used in the vertical direction. Howerer the viscous-terrian correction terms are neglected in the most models with the crcoordinate transformation. Based on the POM ocean numerical model, the ε_u ,ε_Tand ε_s viscous-terrian correction term effects on the simulation for the M_2 tidal component in the Bohai, Yellow and East China Seas are analyzed in this study. As it is learnt from the study, the dissipation action becomes increased in the model with the correction terms taken into consideration, the simulated Mz amplitude is about 1~2 cm reduced in the western Yellow Sea and about 4~5 cm in the Bohai Sea, making the simulated amplitude further deviate from the observed. On the other hand, the simulated M_2 is further close to the observed in the Cheju island area and the Yangtze River estuary although the simulated M_2 amplitude is about 1~3 cm reduced. As shown in the comparison between the model results and the observations at the 90 tidal gauges, the correction term effects are not significant and limited in a little sea area, except in very special area.

Abstract:The Eulerian residual transport velocity and the first-order Lagrangian residual velocity for weakly nonlinear systems have been used extensively in the past to depict inter-tidal mass transport. However, these could not explain the observed net surface sediment transport pattern in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), located on the western Yellow Sea. JZB is characterized by strong tidal motion, complex topography and an irregular coastline, which are features of typical nonlinear systems. The Lagrangian residual velocity, which is applicable to general nonlinear systems, was simulated with the water parcel tracking method. The results indicate that the composition of the Lagrangian residual velocity at different tidal phases coincides well with the observed net surface sediment transport pattern. The strong dependence of water flushing time on the initial tidal phase can also be explained by the significant intra-tidal variation of the Lagrangian residual velocity. To investigate the hydrodynamic mechanism governing the nonlinearity of the M 2 tidal system, a set of nonlinearity indexes were defined and analysed. In the surface layer, horizontal advection is the main contributor to the strong nonlinearity near the bay mouth, while in the bottom layer, the strong nonlinearity near the bay mouth may result from the vertical viscosity and horizontal advection.

Abstract:Residual currents in tidal estuaries and coastal embayments have been recognized as fundamental factors which affect the long‐term transport processes. It has been pointed out by previous studies that it is more relevant to use a Lagrangian mean velocity than an Eulerian mean velocity to determine the movements of water masses. Under weakly nonlinear approximation, the parameter k, which is the ratio of the net displacement of a labeled water mass in one tidal cycle to the tidal excursion, is assumed to be small. Solutions for tides, tidal current, and residual current have been considered for two‐dimensional, barotropic estuaries and coastal seas. Particular attention has been paid to the distinction between the Lagrangian and Eulerian residual currents. When k is small, the first‐order Lagrangian residual is shown to be the sum of the Eulerian residual current and the Stokes drift. The Lagrangian residual drift velocity or the second‐order Lagrangian residual current has been shown to be dependent on the phase of tidal current. The Lagrangian drift velocity is induced by nonlinear interactions between tides, tidal currents, and the first‐order residual currents, and it takes the form of an ellipse on a hodograph plane. Several examples are given to further demonstrate the unique properties of the Lagrangian residual current.
Numerical simulation study on the residual currents in the Xiangshan Bay

Abstract:A three-dimensional baroclinic numerical model of tidal currents in the Xiangshan Bay is built based on Delft3D-Flow. The numerical model, combined with the observational data, is used to investigate the characteristics of the tidal currents in the Xiangshan Bay. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the Eulerian residual currents are quantitative analyzed. The results show that the tide induced residual current is reduced from the entrance to the top, and the scale is 5~33 cm/s. The surface layer is larger than the bottom in the vertical, and the surface direction of residual currents points to the outside, while the bottom turns to the top. Compared the distribution of the Eulerian residual current with barotropic version and baroclinic version, it's known that the top area is controlled by the runoff, and there is little difference between two patterns. Near the entrance of the XiangShan Bay, the water is influenced by the tidal current and runoff, and the baroclinic version is more preferable to simulate the stratification and residual circular currents in the vertical.

Abstract:With a depth-averaged numerical model, the tidally induced Lagrangian residual current in a model bay was studied. To correctly reflect the long-term mass transport, it is appropriate to use the Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) rather than the Eulerian residual velocity (ERV) or the Eulerian residual transport velocity (ETV) to describe the residual current. The parameter κ , which is defined as the ratio of the typical tidal amplitude at the open boundary to the mean water depth, is considered to be the indicator of the nonlinear effect in the system. It is found that the feasibility of making the mass transport velocity (MTV) approximate the LRV is strongly dependent on κ . The error between the MTV and the LRV tends to increase with a growing κ . An additional error will come from the various initial tidal phases due to the Lagrangian drift velocity (LDV) when κ is no longer small. According to the residual vorticity equation based on the MTV, the Coriolis effect is found to influence the residual vorticity mainly through the curl of the tidal stress. A significant difference in the flow pattern indicates that the LRV is sensitive to the bottom friction in different forms.
Improved Numerical Computing Method for the 3D Tidally Induced Lagrangian Residual Current and Its Application in a Model Bay with a Longitudinal Topography

Abstract:An improved method for computing the three-dimensional（3 D） first-order Lagrangian residual velocity（uL） is estab-lished. The method computes tidal body force using the harmonic constants of the zeroth-order tidal current. Compared with using the tidal-averaging method to compute the tidal body force, the proposed method filters out the clutter other than the single-frequency tidal input from the open boundary and obtains uL that is more consistent with the analytic solution. Based on the new method, uL is calculated for a wide bay with a longitudinal topography. The strength and pattern of uL are mostly determined by the parts of the tidal body force related to the vertical mixing of the Stokes’ drift and the Coriolis effect, with a minor contribution from the advection effect. The geometrical shape of the bay can influence uL through the topographic gradient. The magnitude of uL increases with the increases in tidal energy input and vertical eddy viscosity and decreases in terms of the bottom friction coefficient.
3D Modal Solution for Tidally Induced Lagrangian Residual Velocity with Variations in Eddy Viscosity and Bathymetry in a Narrow Model Bay

Abstract:In this study, we examine the results obtained by the Finite-volume Coastal Ocean Circulation Model (FVCOM) regarding the effects of eddy viscosity and bathymetry on the three-dimensional (3D) Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) in a narrow bay. The results are cast in terms of two nondimensional numbers: the ratio of friction to local acceleration (δ) and the ratio of the minimum depth over shoals to the maximum depth in the channel (ε). The ratio δ depends on the eddy viscosity and mean depth. For a given eddy viscosity, when ε > 0.5, the along-estuary LRV tends to be vertically sheared and when ε < 0.5, the exchange is laterally sheared. When ε << 1, the structure of the 3D, depth-integrated, and breadth-averaged LRV changes only slightly as δ increases. For ε values between 0.33 and 0.5, the structure of the 3D LRV is mainly laterally sheared. In the same ε range, the 3D and depth- integrated LRV exhibit reversed structures from high to low δ values. In addition, the breadth-averaged LRV weakens the typical twolayered circulation when δ decreases. When ε is 1, the two-layered vertical structure reverses direction, and a three- layered vertical structure develops in the outer bay as δ decreases.

A Lagrangian Mean Theory on Coastal Sea Circulation with Inter-Tidal Transports II. Numerical Experiments

Abstract:The results of the new concept of coastal sea circulation are demonstrated by numerical simulations for the first time. The numerical experiments in three types of rectangular model seas illustrate the dependence of circulation on tidal phases due to the convectively nonlinear effect which is estimated by a newly defined drift dispersion in dex. Then, the present theory is applied in the Bohai Sea of China. At the Bohai Straits and the Huanghe River Mouth area the circulation direction even reverses owing to different initial tidal phases which shows that the theory copes with nonlinearity well. The calculated M-2 tide-induced residual circulation shows that a clockwise gyre exists in the center of an anticlockwise gyre in the central Bohai Sea due to the topographic features. In the Bohai Gulf the tide induced circulation shows a 3D Structure with outflow at the surface and the inflow at the bottom which can partly explains the spread of the Huanghe River fresh water Out of the Bohai Gulf and the inflow of the sediment from the Huanghe River.
Analytical Solution for the Tidally Induced Lagrangian Residual Current in a Narrow Bay

Abstract:In a weakly nonlinear tidal system, the depth-averaged equations for the first-order Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) are deduced systematically. For the case of a narrow bay, the equations are solved analytically and the results for a specific bottom profile are discussed in detail. According to the pattern of the first-order LRV, the bay can be divided into three parts, namely an inner part, a transitional zone, and an outer part. For the given depth profile, the streamline of the first-order LRV for a shorter bay is a part of that for a longer bay. The first-order LRV depends on a nondimensional parameter that combines the influences of the bottom friction coefficient, the tidal period and the averaged water depth. The form of the bottom friction also has a significant influence on the first-order LRV. The second-order LRV, i.e., the Lagrangian drift, is analytically solved and shows dependence on the initial tidal phase. The LRV differs from the Eulerian residual transport velocity both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is demonstrated that the residual currents obtained according to other definitions may cause misunderstanding of the mass transport in water exchange applications.

Abstract:In the Xiangshan Bay at the east coast of China, coastal marine pollution is conspicuous and severe in recent years. As transport of the pollutants is closely related to the coastal circulation, there is a great practical significance to investigate the circulation in this area. In this work, the surface pattern and vertical profiles of Lagrangian residual velocity（LRV） were studied based on field observation data from the inner Xiangshan Bay. By tracking GPS-GPRS drifters’ trajectories, the surface LRV pattern is going out in the central deep trough and flowing inwards near the shoreside. Combined with data from two mooring stations, vertical profiles of LRV is flowing out at surface and flowing in at the bottom, consistent with the gravitational circulation induced by baroclinic effects at the estuary. However, according to the diagnostic analysis, the main mechanism driving the residual current is barotropic rather than baroclinic. The LRV equation is controlled by the tidally-averaged barotropic pressure gradient force, tidal body force and tidally-averaged turbulent stress, while the tidallyaveraged baroclinic pressure gradient force is one order of magnitude less than other forces. Additionally, the tidally mean eddy viscosity coefficient which is used in the expression of tidally-averaged turbulent stress might be not adequate and requires further studies.
