Abstract:Based on COHERENS,a three dimensional suspended sediment model COHERENS-SED is setup,combined with local wave conditions,to perform the simulation of three dimensional current and suspended sediment in the offshore zone of Qingdao.Then the results for the hydrodynamical environment and suspended sediment over this region are analyzed.The results show that under the combined action of waves and currents,the offshore resuspension is obvious,and the suspended sediment concentration is up to 50 mg/L during spring tide.
The Impact of Barotropic Tidal Current on the Simulation of Large-Amplitude Internal Solitary Waves in the Deep Sea in the Northeast of South China Sea

Abstract:The simulation of large-amplitude internal solitary waves in the deep sea(the sea basin and the continental slope area) in the Northeast South China Sea is made in two conditions: one is that the background current is composed of circulation and flood current,and the other is composed of circulation and ebb current.The impact of barotropic tidal current on internal wave mode structure function φ(z),the nonlinearity coefficient α and the dispersion coefficient β of GK-dV equation,the phase speed c of long internal waves, as well as the amplitude and shape of internal solitary waves are considered.It is found that barotropic tidal current has a small effect on φ(z) and β,but has a great effect on α and c.The effect on α in the shallow sea is larger than that in the deep sea,but on c is consistent.When barotropic tidal current has the same direction as circulation,the magnitudes of α(absolute value) and c are larger.Furthermore the difference of impaction between flood current case and ebb current case on the amplitude and shape of the first soliton is small,but on nonlinear evolution process of internal solitary waves is lager.

Abstract:As a typical marginal sea in the western Pacific, the South China Sea (SCS) has experienced a complex evolutionary process, and mapping its Moho depth can help us understand the accretion process of the oceanic crust. In this study, we present a refined Moho depth model in the SCS based on gravity inversion constrained by seismic data. For a more reliable gravity-derived Moho depth, an improved sediment thickness grid is constructed from a large volume of seismic reflection/refraction data. The gravity-derived Moho depths are in good agreement with the seismically determined ones, with the majority of differences falling within +/- 2.5 km. Our results reveal a significant crustal thickness asymmetry across the mid-ocean ridge of the East Sub-basin of the SCS basin since the ridge jump at 23.6 Ma. We attribute this asymmetry to higher residual mantle temperature and more magma supply north of the spreading center. The higher mantle temperature to the north is evidenced by the shallower Curie depth estimated from magnetic anomalies than to the south of the spreading ridge.
Deep-sea Sediment Resuspension by Internal Solitary Waves in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:Internal solitary waves (ISWs) can cause strong vertical and horizontal currents and turbulent mixing in the ocean. These processes affect sediment and pollutant transport, acoustic transmissions and man-made structures in the shallow and deep oceans. Previous studies of the role of ISWs in suspending seafloor sediments and forming marine nepheloid layers were mainly conducted in shallow-water environments. In summer 2017, we observed at least four thick (70-140 m) benthic nepheloid layers (BNLs) at water depths between 956 and 1545 m over continental slopes in the northern South China Sea. We found there was a good correlation between the timing of the ISW packet and variations of the deepwater suspended sediment concentration (SSC). At a depth of 956 m, when the ISW arrived, the near-bottom SSC rapidly increased by two orders of magnitude to 0.62 mg/l at 8 m above the bottom. At two much deeper stations, the ISW-induced horizontal velocity reached 59.6-79.3 cm/s, which was one order of magnitude more than the seafloor contour currents velocity. The SSC, 10 m above the sea floor, rapidly increased to 0.10 mg/l (depth of 1545 m) and 1.25 mg/l (depth of 1252 m). In this study, we found that ISWs could suspend much more sediments on deepwater areas than previously thought. Specifically, we estimated that ISWs could induce and suspend 78.7 Mt/yr of sediment from shelf to deep-sea areas of the northern South China Sea. The total amount of sediment resuspended by shoaling ISWs was 2.7 times that of river-derived sediment reaching the northern South China Sea. This accounted for 6.1% of the global river-discharged sediment (16.4% of that from Asian rivers) transported to the sea.

Abstract:The lateral advection of sinking particles is a well-known phenomenon in the South China Sea (SCS) and has a significant impact on the estimation of the efficiency of the biological carbon pump. However, little is known about the sources and pathways of sinking particles. Here, we present benthic and freshwater diatom fluxes and relative abundances collected by a sediment trap deployed at a water depth of 1,000 m and more than 500 m above the seafloor in the northwestern SCS, indicating that laterally transported resuspended sediment accounts for a significant part of the particle flux to the deep sea. A Lagrangian particle tracking model (LPTM) revealed that the resuspended particles likely originated from the neighboring continental slope, approximately 12-145 km to the west of the study site. Sediment trap observations and the LPTM together indicated that the impact of resuspended sediment occurred mainly in the deep water, and especially strong sediment resuspension was related to summer monsoon-induced coastal upwelling. The results suggest that particle resuspension has an important impact on the biological pump as well as on paleoenvironmental reconstructions of the SCS.

Abstract:Internal solitary waves (ISWs) can cause strong seafloor sediment resuspension and induce nepheloid layers in both shallow and deep-water environments. However, the roles of ISWs in the >1000 m deep sea sediment resuspension and seafloor geomorphic changes are still unclear. To answer the above question, in the Dongsha area of the northern South China Sea, we measured suspended particulate matter along with a section covering the entire continental slope between 300 and 2000 m water depths, together with high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data for examining geomorphic changes. The results indicate that, on the upper slope with water depth <700 m, seafloor sediments were heavily disturbed and resuspended. We find that ISWs could suspend seabed sediments and shape a bedform at water depths ≲1000 m. The maximum water depth of sediment resuspension by ISWs measured is found as deep as 1500 m. The distribution pattern of the seafloor surface sediments on the east of the Dongsha continental slope (fine and silty sand in <700 m water depth, clayey silt between 700 and 1500 m, and silty clay > 1500 m) also indicates that they are mainly controlled and impacted by ISWs. The wave refraction theory could be applied to the upper slope, but sediment resuspension is related to the seabed topography on the lower slope. Our study shows that the suspension and transport of sediments induced by episodic ISWs on the Dongsha slope of the northern South China Sea could shape the bedform and affect the sedimentary seabed geomorphology. This research will help explain the impacts of the ISWs on the deep-water sediment resuspension and seafloor geopmorphic changes along with the continental slope in the margin sea.

Abstract:The northern South China Sea (SCS) experienced a significant transition from a lacustrine to marine environment in the Paleogene, and its deep-water basin of Zhu-II Depression is in particular extensively studied due to its richness in oil and gas resources. However, limited number of boreholes in the deep-water area has long constrained a better understanding on the provenance of the Paleogene strata and the associated sediment transport processes. In this study, detrital zircon U-Pb ages and three-dimensional (3D) seismic-reflection data were systematically employed to investigate the “source-to-sink” pathways and interplay of longitudinal and transverse sediment dispersal. Our results indicate that the Zhu-II Depression sediments of the northern SCS were predominantly derived from the surrounding nearby paleo-uplifts in the early and middle Eocene. A significant provenance shift took place in the late Eocene, when the local paleo-uplift source was replaced by a distant source from the western SCS. Sediments were transported from west to east by the “Kontum-Ying-Qiong River” as a longitudinal dispersal. In the Oligocene, the “Kontum-Ying-Qiong River” delivered large amounts of sediments from Central Vietnam to the eastern part of the northern SCS. Meanwhile, the Pearl River gradually evolved through regional tectonic processes and influenced the deep-water area of Zhu-II Depression as a transverse dispersal. Sediments from both “Kontum-Ying-Qiong” and Pearl Rivers converged and deposited as deep-water deltas in the Zhu-II Depression. This dual provenance system in the northern SCS deep-water area was featured by the interplay between longitudinal and transverse sediment dispersal. It was largely controlled by the tectonic-palaeogeographic pattern inherited from the Mesozoic arc system.
Deep Water Bottom Current Deposition in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:There are some active bottom currents on the northern continental slope of the South China Sea (SCS). Reflection seismic profiles show that the bottom current channels occur in the water depth range of 1000 to 2700 m, extending from the NE to the SW, leading to accumulation of discontinuous drifts with higher sedimentation rates on the eastern side of the channel. The stacking pattern of the layers suggests that these drifts propagated southwestward, following the direction of the bottom currents. One sedimentary drift to the southeast of the Dongsha Islands has the highest sedimentation rate of 97cm/ka in the last 12 ka. The sedimentary characteristics of the sediment layers indicate that these bottom currents are most likley caused by the water movement of a branch of the West Pacific Ocean Current, which enters the northern SCS via the Bashi Strait. Once formed, the bottom currents transport sediments along the northern slope of SCS southwestward and finally disappear into the central basin of the SCS. Due to the bottom current activity, the deep-sea sedimentary process in the northern SCS is complex.

Abstract:High-resolution tripod observations were conducted in a subaqueous sand-wave field in the northern South China Sea. The objective was to gain insight into the dynamic mechanism by which sandy sediments are remobilized by oceanic dynamic processes, in particular internal solitary waves and internal tides. Daily- recurring high suspended sediment concentrations were observed, likely due to lateral transport of sediments resuspended by critical reflection of diurnal internal tides at the shelf break. The passage of extreme internal solitary waves results in resuspension of sediments from the seabed and ejection of these sediments out of the boundary layer. The resuspension of sediments from the seabed is controlled by current-induced strong bed shear stress, while the ejection of sediments out of the bottom boundary layer is driven by the compression and subsequent expansion of the mixing layer, together with the developments of the separation bubbles behind the internal solitary waves. These findings provide new insights into understanding the dynamic mechanism of sediment remobilization by internal solitary waves. Moreover, they contribute to our understanding of the migration of subaqueous sand waves.

Abstract:The resuspension of marine sediments plays a key role in the biogeochemical cycle and marine ecology system. Internal solitary waves are considered to be important driving forces of the resuspension of bottom sediments. In this paper, the movement of turbidity currents, the generation and the effects on the bottom bed of internal solitary waves and excitation waves are studied by flume tests and numerical simulations, and the sediment resuspension are analyzed. The results show that the excitation wave can lead to the resuspension of the bottom sediments under all the conditions, while the internal solitary wave can lead to the resuspension of the sediment only under some special conditions, such as high amplitude or large underwater slope. Under the experimental conditions, the change in the near-bottom velocity caused by the excitation wave is close to three times that of the internal solitary wave.

Abstract:A two-dimensional, depth-integrated model proposed by Lynett and Liu (2002) was checked carefully, and several misprints in the model were corrected after detailed examination on both the theory and the numerical program. Several comparisons were made on wave profile, system energy and maximum wave amplitude. It is noted that the modified model can simulate the propagation of the internal solitary waves over variable bathymetry more reasonably to a certain degree, and the wave profiles obtained based on the modified model can better fit the experiment data reported by Helfrich (1992) than those from original model.

Abstract:A calibrated, coupled model (COAWST) of the Bohai and Yellow Seas was employed to examine the contributions of waves and tides to the sediment transport, and to understand the dynamic factors controlling bottom sediment resuspension around the Shandong Peninsula. The numerical results, which were consistent with the in-situ observations, illustrated two events with large values of suspended sediment concentration (SSC). The two events had similar wave heights, but SSC during the second event was more than twice that of the first one. Numerical experiments indicated that the large values of SSC east of the Shandong Peninsula were mainly ascribed to local resuspension, and that waves played a primary role in sediment resuspension for both high SSC events. The differences in SSC and bottom shear stress between the two events were mainly due to differences in wave period, representing about 65% of the total difference, and the non-linear interactions of wave and currents played a secondary role. Therefore, wave period is an important factor along with wave amplitude in the contribution of waves to sediment resuspension in this region. The combined actions of waves and currents dynamics dominate the sediment resuspension rather than either factor in isolation. Due to sheltering effect by the Shandong Peninsula, the wave effect on sediment resuspension was less to the south of the Peninsula than that to the north and east. In addition, the Shandong Coastal Current was enhanced by the northerly wind leading to more sediment transport southward along the coast of Shandong Peninsula, but this has small effect on the difference of suspended sediment concentration between two storm events.

Abstract:Internal solitary waves (ISWs) are nonlinear fluctuations in nature that could cause significant interactions between seawater and the seabed. ISWs have been proven to be an adequate cause of sediment resuspension in shallow and deep-sea environments. In the South China Sea, ISWs have the largest amplitude globally and directly interact with the seabed near the Dongsha slope in the northern South China Sea. We analyzed the water profile and high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data near the Dongsha slope and revealed that submarine trenches have a significant impact on the sediment resuspension by ISWs. Moreover, ISWs in the zone of the wave-wave interaction enhanced sediment mixing and resuspension. The concentration of the suspended particulate matter inside submarine trenches was significantly higher than that outside them. The concentration of the suspended particulate matter near the bottoms of trenches could be double that outside them and formed a vast bottom nepheloid layer. Trenches could increase the concentration of the suspended particulate matter in the entire water column, and a water column with a high concentration of the suspended particulate matter was formed above the trench. ISWs in the wave-wave interaction zone near Dongsha could induce twice the concentration of the bottom nepheloid layer than those in other areas. The sediment resuspension caused by ISWs is a widespread occurrence all around the world. The findings of this study can offer new insights into the influence of submarine trench and wave-wave interaction on sediment resuspension and help in geohazard assessment.
