Abstract:Omphacite is a diagnostic mineral of high-and ultrahigh-pressure rocks, and its association with garnet is characteristic of eclogites from subduction-related massifs and volcano-entrained xenoliths. Omphacite can accommodate significant amounts of water as structurally bound hydroxyl (OH) groups, and is able to convey water into Earth's interior. We show, for the first time, experimental evidence that the infrared absorption patterns of water in omphacite are temperature sensitive. This provides a new framework for discriminating water in natural omphacite equilibrated at different temperatures. We also demonstrate that in low-temperature omphacite, the integral absorbance ratio between the infrared OH absorption bands at 3620 cm(-1) and 3450 cm(-1) is linearly related to temperature. Water in omphacite of massif eclogites records the temperature of OH equilibrium, allowing reconstruction of the fluid-involved thermal history and tectonics of rock evolution.

Abstract:Garnets in ultrahigh pressure (UHP) eclogites from Bixiling in Dabieshan were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results demonstrate that all garnets contain structural water which occurs as hydroxyl (OH), with contents ranging from 164 to 2034 ppm (H 2 O wt.) and mostly higher than 500 ppm. Like omphacite which is another major OH-rich mineral in eclogites, garnet is an important carrier that can recycle the surface water into deep mantles. Heterogeneity of water in garnets exists not only among different samples of the same outcrop (∼150 m), but also among different crystals of the same sample (∼1 cm). This indicates that the mobility of fluids during UHP metamorphism is very limited (possibly on centimeter scales), and that both subduction and exhumation processes of UHP rocks are very fast.

Abstract:Garnet and omphacite from ultrahigh-pressure eclogites from the Dabie orogen, eastern China were investigated by Micro-FTIR. The results show that all garnet and omphacite grains contain structural water occurring as hydroxyl (OH), with H2O contents varying from 14 to 1915ppm (H2Owt) and from 105 to 695ppm, respectively. Within the same sample, the water contents are either homogeneous at the grain scale or vary systematically from higher in the core to lower in the rim. Low water contents at crystal rims possibly result from hydroxyl exsolution after pressure decrease upon rock exhumation. The δD values of omphacites are between −108.4‰ and −114.2‰, and independent of water contents. Heterogeneous water contents of garnet occur at the centimeter scale and fluid mobility during UHP metamorphism was very limited. The estimated whole-rock water content based on mineral H2O contents is between 260 and 750ppm, thereby implying that eclogitic rocks formed during continental subduction have the potential to recycle (at least) several hundreds ppm water to mantle depths. The preserved chemical differences likely indicate that the eclogitic rocks resided at mantle conditions for a limited time span, and imply that they were exhumed shortly after subduction. The water released during decompression might represent the early-stage retrograde fluid.

Abstract:Clinopyroxenes in eclogites from Bixiling and Huangzhen, Dabieshan have been investigated by FTIR. Structural water occurs in all omphacites as hydroxyl (OH-) with content up to ∼2000ppm (H 2O wt.). Water content is heterogeneous on the outcrop (∼150m) scale at Bixiling and homogeneous at Huangzheng on the 3km scale, and the distribution characteristics were inherited from their protoliths. The water-rock interaction which Dabieshan eclogites protoliths experienced was channeled for Bixiling and pervasive for Huangzheng. The protolith of Bixiling eclogites was probably gabbroic intrusion and that of Huangzheng eclogites was probably basalt. Water content of Bixiling clinopyroxenes (<1400ppm) was significantly lower than that of Huangzheng clinopyroxenes (∼ 1850ppm), which aroses from different protolith and the way of water-rock interaction before subduction.

Abstract:A suite of eclogites from the Roberts Victor kimberlite has been extensively characterized in terms of petrology and geochemical compositions (Gréau et al. in Geochim Cosmochim Acta 75(22):6927–6954, 2011; Huang et al. in Lithos 142–143:161–181, 2012a). In the present study, the water contents of eclogitic garnet and omphacite were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Garnet does not contain measureable OH in any sample. The water content of omphacite in the studied eclogites ranges from 211 to 1,496 ppm. Mantle metasomatism has modified the water content of some of the eclogites, while others retain water contents characteristic of their original environment. The OH contents of the metasomatized eclogites may be mainly controlled by the H2O fugacity and mineral compositions. The OH contents of the non-metasomatized samples are interpreted to be more sensitive to their mantle equilibration temperature, pressure, and the local fugacities of H2O and O2. The calculated water content of the metasomatic medium is similar to that of carbonatitic–kimberlitic melts/fluids. Eclogites contain more water than peridotites recorded in the literature (341 ± 161 vs 122 ± 54 ppm) and represent an important water reservoir in the lithospheric mantle wherever they occur. This is an important parameter to be considered in the interpretation of mantle processes and geophysical data such as seismic wave speeds and electrical conductivity, and in geodynamic modeling.

Abstract:Garnets and omphacites in eclogites from Dabieshan were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT IR). The results indicate that garnet and omphacite could contain structural water which occurs as hydroxyl (OH). The structural hydroxyl contents of the Dabieshan garnets are varied from 20×10-6 to 2200×10-6 ppm (H2O,wt) with majority ranging from 200×10-6 to 1000×10-6 , whereas those of the Dabieshan omphacites are varied from 100×10-6 to 3000×10-6 with majority of over 500×10-6. The UPH eclogite could contain up to 1000×10-6 water. The δD values of omphacites are varied form -67‰ to-110‰. Both the H2 O contents and SD values show uneven distribution among various samples from the same locality and even among various grains within the same sample. This suggests that the mobility of fluids was very limited during UHP metamorphism. It also indicates that both the plate subduction and the exhumation processes of UHP rocks were occurred in a short time period. The structural water contents and the distribution characteristics of NAMs not only can trace the evolution of fluids during UHP metamorphism, but also can provide some geodynamic information of deep continental subduction.
Water in UHP Eclogites at Shuanghe, Dabieshan: Micro-FTIR Analysis

Abstract:When the continental crust subducted to a certain depth (~90-110km), almost no hydrous minerals existed in the plate, and nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs, such as garnet, pyroxene, quartz) in UHP rocks became the main carriers transporting water into the mantle. Garnet and omphacite in UHP eclogites at Shuanghe, Dabieshan have been investigated by Micro-FTIR. The results demonstrate that all garnet and omphacite grains contain structural water occurring as hydroxyl (OH) with the content from 30×10 -6 to 1860×10 -6 (H_2O wt.) and from 360×10 -6 to 620×10 -6, respectively. The water content (300×10 -6 to 750×10 -6) of whole rocks suggests that UHP rocks can recycle at least several hundred ×10 -6 water into the mantle by deep continental subduction. There are two types of water distribution characteristics within a single garnet grain, one is homogeneous and the other has higher water content in the core and lower in the rim. The lower water content in the rim possibly arises from hydrogen diffusion in response to a sharp decrease in pressure during the exhumation, and the expelled hydrogen may be the source of early-stage retrograde fluid. The ratio of water content in omphacite and garnet is between 0.5 and 3.5.

Abstract:Minerals in nominally 'dry' peridotite xenoliths from Cenozoic basanites from Nushan, Anhui (six samples) and Panshishan, Jiangsu (three samples) have been investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results demonstrated that clinopyroxenes and orthopyroxenes commonly contained trace amount of structural water as hydroxyl, only one olivine contained structural hydroxyl, garnet from one garnet - lherzolite from Nushan had not structural water. The water content of clinopyroxene was higher than that of orthopyroxene, and far higher than that of olivine (garnet). Combining the previously published data, it was suggested that both large scale and small scale heterogeneities of the water distributions possibly occured in the lithospheric mantle, and the lithospheric mantle did not show vertical zoning of water distributions.
A Study of Oxygen Isotopes and Hydroxyl Content in Minerals of Uhp Metamorphic Rocks from Ccsd Core 734 to 933M

Abstract:Two continuous core segments between eclogite and gneiss from the main hole of CCSD project, at the depths of 734.21 to 737.16m (I) and 929.67 to 932.86m (II), respectively, are systematically analyzed for oxygen isotopes by the laser fluorination technique and for hydroxyl (OH) content in nominally anhydrous minerals by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Oxygen isotope analysis shows that garnet from eclogites in the two core segments has delta(18)O values of +1.0parts per thousand to +3.8parts per thousand and -4.1parts per thousand to -3.3parts per thousand, respectively, and that garnet from gneisses in the two core segments has delta(18)O values as low as -4.0. These suggest that protoliths of both eclogite and gneiss experienced meteoric-hydrothermal alteration before continental subduction. An oxygen isotope front is observed in the contact zone between eclogite and gneiss in the core segment I. This is interpreted as a result of fluid-roek interaction between eclogite near the contact zone and fluid mainly from gneiss nearby, which is controlled by fluid transport distance. The FTIR analysis shows concentrations of hydroxyl in 50 to 776 ppm for garnet and in 321 to 1636 ppm for omphacite. For quartz, we have only found the characteristic band of hydroxyl at 3596 cm(-1) but its hydroxyl content is very low. A profile-comparison of oxygen isotope ratio and hydroxyl content shows a consistent change with depth between delta(18)O value and OH content in garnet, omphacite and other minerals. This suggests that retrograde alteration and associated local fluid flow may be the main cause for the observations that the ultrahigh- and high-pressure minerals deviate from oxygen isotope equilibrium fractionations and the degree of disequilibrium is controlled by local water/rock ratios. Therefore, the significant amounts of hydroxyl in garnet and omphacite, together with other nominally anhydrous minerals, may constitute a major source of retrograde fluid by releasing water during decompression exhumation.

Abstract:Garnets in UHP eclogites from Bixiling in Dabieshan were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Water in rutiles from UHP eclogites in the Dabie orogen

Abstract:Intergranular rutiles from six UHP eclogites in the Dabie orogen were investigated by Micro-FTIR and EMP analysis. The results show that all grains show two strong absorbance bands at 3 280 cm-1 and 3 295 cm-1, with an occasional weak and wide absorbance band at ～3 360 cm-1, which are all ascribed to structural OH. Comparisons with the results of HT-HP experiments indicate that the 3 280 cm-1 band is caused by Ti3++H+Ti4+ substitution, the 3 295 cm-1 band is attributed to Fe3++H+Ti4+ substitution, and the ～3 360 cm-1 band is possibly related to Mg2++2H+Ti4+. The calculated water contents (expressed as H2O wt.) based on two reliable IR absorbance coefficients are 161×10-6～854×10-6 and 202×10-6～1 075×10-6 respectively, and the results will increase by about 4～5 times if other absorbance coefficients are applied. Hence the relatively high water content in literature should be considered carefully. Similar to coexisting garnet and omphacite, heterogeneous distribution of water on the outcrop scales in rutiles implies a very limited fluid mobility during UHP metamorphism and a quick subduction and exhumation process.

Abstract:Anhydrous minerals (olivine, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene) from 12 peridotite xenoliths hosted by basalts in Hannuoba of Hebei were investigated by micro-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). No distinct OH absorption bands can be found in olivines, whereas all the analyzed clinopyroxene (Cpx) and orthopyroxene (Opx) grains contain structural water in the form of OH. The structural water contents of pyroxenes show inhomogeneous distribution within individual grains characterized by higher contents in the core and lower in the rim. Low water contents at grain rims probably result from hydrogen diffusion after pressure decrease upon rock ascending. The range of the average core water content of multi grains (>10) from the same sample for the twelve Hannuoba peridotites is 48×10 -6 ～152×10 -6 and 20×10 -6 ～55×10 -6 for Cpx and Opx respectively. On the basis of water contents of the minerals and their volume proportions, the water contents of the whole rocks are estimated to be 11×10 -6 ～48×10 -6 . Combined with the available data of peridotite xenoliths worldwide, it is held that, under the physical and chemical conditions of lithospheric mantle, the water partition coefficient between clinopyroxene and orthoproxene should be 2.2±0.6, and the water distribution in lithosphere seems to be heterogeneous both at global and regional scales.
Water in Feldspar from Gabbros at Shacun, Dabie Mountains and Implications for Magmatic Evolution

Abstract:Chemical compositions of gabbros from Shacun, Dabieshan and their feldspars are obtained by the wet method and EMPA respectively, and hydrogen speciation and structural water content of feldspars are investigated by FTIR. According to the chemical compositions, the 10 studied gabbros can be divided into two groups representing two different magmas. All analyzed feldspar grains contain structural water which occur as OH-, and the water contents (H_2O wt.) range from 135~658 ppm. Combining the results with the dataset of UHP ecologites from Dabieshan, the high H_2O character of the Shacun gabbros suggests that the subducted eclogites could be involved in the source. For both groups of gabbros, the water contents of the feldspars show negative correlation with the Mg# values of the whole rocks. It may be caused by the continual crystallization of amphiboles and/or magma degassing. The preservation of the correlation between water contents in feldspars and Mg# values of the whole rocks indicates that the initial water contents of feldspars have not been changed after crystallization, suggesting their validity of tracing magma evolution.
Water Transport in Continental Subduction Zones: Constraints from Eclogite from the Dabie Orogen, East-Central China

Abstract:Water in nominally anhydrous minerals may exist as structural hydroxyl and molecular H2O, and their inter-transformation can occur during subduction zone metamorphism. This issue is examined here by a systematic study on water in garnet and omphacite for ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic eclogites from the Dabie orogen. IR spectra of garnet at different preheating temperatures imply that the broad absorption band at 3400-3450 cm-1 mainly represents molecular H2O. Molecular H2O in garnet can be intrinsic origin, but is mainly originated from external fluid during exhumation. The positive correlation between molecular H2O and structural hydroxyl in garnet suggests their inter-transformation. Molecular H2O that was formerly included in garnet or derived from decomposition of hydrous minerals was transformed gradually to structural hydroxyl in garnet during subduc-tion. OH- modes at higher wavenumber in garnet are more stable and more enriched in D, and D-poor molecular H2O is preferentially lost during dehydration. Hydroxyl in both anhydrous and hydrous minerals would be transformed to molecular H2O during exhumation and redistributed into garnet or retrograde minerals. The addition of molecular H2O into garnet during exhumation causes increase of structural hydroxyl but decrease of delta D value, and affects accurate estimate of water content in peak garnet. Different from the large variation of garnet water contents, omphacite tends to be water-saturated at high-pressure conditions and its water content is mainly controlled by Ca-Eskola. The subducting mafic crust can transport a considerable amount of water to subarc depths to result in the formation of relatively water-rich mantle regions.

Abstract:This paper presents major and trace element data of minerals(clinopyroxene(Cpx),orthopyroxene(Opx),olivine(Ol),and spinel(Spl))from peridotite xenoliths hosted by Cenozoic basalts in Longgang and Wangqing,Jilin Province,which were obtained by EMP and LA-ICPMS respectively.Covariances in element contents of peridotite minerals suggest that the peridotite xenoliths are relicts of primary mantle after different degrees of partial melting.Elevated content of highly incompatible elements in some clinopyroxenes demonstrates that the Longgang and Wangqing lithospheric mantle has undergone subsequent mantle metasomatism;the major metasomatic agent was silicate melt and/or with minor carbonatite melt.Both clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene show prominent absorption bands in the range of 3 000-3 700cm-1,which are due to hydroxyl defect in their crystal structure;no discernable OH peaks can be found in olivine grains.The water content(H2O wt.)of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene from Longgang are calculated to be ranging from 48×10-6 to 464×10-6 and 28×10-6 to 104×10-6 respectively;that of same minerals from Wangqing ranges from 34×10-6 to 403×10-6 and 13×10-6 to 89×10-6 respectively.Based on the water content and mineral model,it is estimated that the whole-rock water contents of the Longgang and Wangqing peridotites vary in the range of(8-92)×10-6.The water contents of peridotites can reflect the information on lithospheric mantle in this region,and the large variations in the water content may be resulted from the heterogeneity of the primary water content in the mantle source and combined with the superimposition of partial melting and metasomatism events.
