Abstract:In this study, 1,4-dioxane and tetrahydrofuran are found to be the most suitable solvents for the dehydration of fructose at high concentrations, in which 77.7% and 78.8% yields of 5-hydromethylfurfural (5-HMF) are obtained, respectively, from 20 wt% fructose in the presence of an acid catalyst (5 mol% HCl, 11 wt% water). The high proportion of fructofuranose formed in those polar aprotic solvents and the reversible dimerization to the protective difructose dianhydrides determined by C-13 NMR and HPLC-MS, which stop fructose from excess cross-polymerization into unwanted humins, are considered to be the key factors for the satisfactory 5-HMF yield. Further addition of strong electrophilic molecules such as 5 mol% maleic acid, which consumes 2,5-dioxo-6-hydroxy-hexanal and blocks its reaction with 5-HMF by Michael addition, enhances the yield of 5-HMF to 85.4%.

Abstract:Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from fructose is a typical liquid-phase biomass conver-sion reaction, strongly affected by solvent media and acid catalysts, including fructose reactivity and HMF selectivity. Most works on solvent selection were conducted experimentally, however, lack of the-oretical guidance. Herein, we applied experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate solvent effects of acetone-water solvent on HMF production. Factors including product distribution, key interme-diate and byproduct identification, reaction pathways, and solvation simulation of solutes were system-atically evaluated. The results indicate that water ensures high substrate concentration and assists intermolecular hydrogen transfer to accelerate reaction rate. Various HMF degradation reactions are introduced in the presence of water, however, are significantly inhibited by acetone. Moreover, acetone increases the population of high-reactive fructofuranose isomers, thus improving HMF yield. Therefore, water and acetone play a synergistic role in HMF preparation. Also, our findings provide theoretical insights for solvent selection and methodology for studying solvent effects. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a crucial biobased compound for synthesizing chemicals and biofuels, but the direct conversion of glucose to HMF suffers low yield and purification problems. In this paper, a cheap and efficient deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride-chromium chloride (ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O) was developed to convert glucose and other carbohydrates to HMF. High HMF yields of 70.2, 78.6, 72.6, and 71.7% were achieved from glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, and sucrose, respectively. The DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O could be reused nine times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. In addition, a method was developed to regenerate humins-polluted DES. Combined with ultraviolet and visible spectrum data and density functional theory calculation, [Cr(H2O)(2)Cl(3)Ch](+) was identified as the active species in DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O. This paper proposed a new effective system to convert carbohydrates to HMF. The discovery of active species provides a base for future studies on dehydration mechanisms.

Abstract:Catalytic dehydration of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) has been studied in the presence of ionic liquids, i.e., 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) and triethylamine sulphate ([Et3NH][HSO4]) using metal salts as catalysts. Novel metal chlorides IrCl3 and AuCl3·HCl as catalysts in ionic liquid showed remarkable activity and selectivity to 5-HMF for the reaction of fructose dehydration. The reaction conditions of fructose dehydration were optimized as follows: reaction temperature 120°C, reaction time 30min, IrCl3 content 7% (mol% based on fructose) in [BMIM]Cl, at which the conversion of fructose and the yield of 5-HMF reached 97.7% and 89.0%, respectively. By simply assuming the fructose simultaneously converts to 5-HMF and other by-products by the first-order reaction kinetics, the energies of activation are estimated to be 165kJ/mol for the formation of 5-HMF and 124kJ/mol for the formation of other by-products from 80 to 100°C, respectively. The existence of water in the media more than 0.5% (v/v) would significantly slow down the dehydration rate of fructose, while it seemed not necessary to further remove water during the reaction when the water was less than 0.5%. Compared with the dehydration of fructose, the dehydration of other carbohydrates such as glucose, sucrose and maltose was rather difficult.

Abstract:Converting carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important goal for biorefinery. Although various deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been reported for HMF production, the field lacks systematic research on the effect of cations and anions and an effective catalytic system for converting concentrated carbohydrates. Here, 12 kinds of DESs containing four cations and six anions were systematically evaluated and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) was confirmed as the most effective DES, which provided HMF yields of 90 and 76% from fructose and glucose, respectively. The stable bromide-substituted intermediate may explain the positive effect of bromide based on the results of density functional theory calculation. A high concentration substrate has an adverse impact on the selectivity of HMF due to the HMF concentration caused by glucose, CrCl3.6H(2)O, and concentrated HMF. To inhibit the condensation, a biphasic system of TEAB/THF is developed to convert a highly concentrated glucose of 62.5 wt % (83.3 wt % with respect to TEAB), providing an excellent HMF yield of 72%. This study has revealed the impact of cations and anions of DESs on HMF production, which will serve as a base for designing taskspecific DESs. Moreover, an efficient catalytic system to produce HMF from concentrated glucose was also provided.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) primary can be synthesized from monosaccharides including glucose and fructose, cost is one of barriers to realize HMF large-scale production. In this study, a high HMF yield of 69.6 mol% was obtained at 180. for 5 min using biomass derived cellulose formate as reactant, which was prepared by formylation of cellulose using recyclable formic acid, and sequentially catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and H2O system. To investigate the effect of cosolvents and formyl groups on the cellulose formate conversion, kinetics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted. Reaction kinetics study shows that the rate constant of hydrolysis of cellulose formate to glucose increased by almost three times in DMSO-H2O and the reaction rates' constants of glucose, fructose and HMF to humins decreased with the presence of DMSO. Molecular dynamics simulations show that formyl group and DMSO increased its hydrophilicity around the reactive hydroxyl group on the carbon ring and steric hindrance of formyl group affect the distribution of water molecular and DMSO molecular around formylated glucose, resulting in facilitating the formation of a precursor to fructose and inhibiting the formation of humins during formylated glucose conversion. Abstract:Humin formation is one of the key issues that hinders economical 5-HMF production from hexose sugars such as glucose and fructose. In this work, the mechanism of humin formation in glucose/fructose conversion to HMF was studied in an ionic liquid system (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [BMIM]Cl) with CrCl3 as the catalyst. Elemental analysis, XRD, FT-IR, and TEM were applied to study the molecular structure and morphology of the solid humins. The possible intermediates to form solid humins were investigated by HPLC-MS. We synthesized furanic model compounds that mimic the experimentally identified humin intermediates to investigate the mechanism of humin growth at an early stage. The results showed that a furan compound bearing a hydroxymethyl and an electron-donating group was unstable due to three types of reactions: (1) bimolecular ether formation reactions; (2) intermolecular addition reaction; (3) furan ring opening reaction with water. The stability of a furan compound in [BMIM]Cl was increased when the hydroxymethyl group of a furan compound was protected by a methyl group, and the stability was further enhanced with an additional electron-withdrawing group (such as an aldehyde group) on the furan ring. Protecting the hydroxymethyl group of 5-HMF with a methyl group allows easy separation of the products from the [BMIM]Cl solvent through extraction.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:Catalytic dehydration of D-fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was investigated over a series of Nafion-modified mesocellular silica foam (MCF) materials. By using an impregnation method, Nafion resin was highly dispersed in the ultra-large pores of the MCFs. Highly efficient and selective dehydration of D-fructose to HMF was achieved in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent; an 89.3% HMF yield with 95.0% selectivity was obtained in the presence of the Nafion(15)/MCF catalyst. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and solvent on the dehydration of D-fructose were systematically investigated. The catalyst could be regenerated through an ion-exchange method and a high yield was retained after being used five times. As a heterogeneous catalytic process, a possible reaction mechanism for the dehydration of D-fructose over Nafion-modified MCF catalysts was proposed.

Abstract:Sulfonated carbons with hierarchically ordered pores (SCHOP) were prepared by means of dual template self-assembly, carbonization, HF etching, and sulfonation. The effect of carbonization temperature on microstructure of the prepared carbons as well as the SCHOPs were surveyed at 500–700°C. Using fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural as a probe reaction, catalytic performance of SCHOPs was examined. The results show that SCHOP-500 carbonized at 500°C exhibits the highest catalytic activity. SEM and TEM characterization as well as N2 adsorption desorption show that all of the SCHOPs possess hierarchically ordered macropores and mesopores, but high carbonization temperature damages the regularity of carbon materials slightly. FT-IR, EDS and –SO3H determination confirm that sulfonic acid group could be successfully introduced to carbon materials by sulfonation. However, high carbonization temperature lowers aromaticity of the carbon materials, and as a result leading to low sulfonation degree. Under the catalysis of SCHOP-500, as high as 93.4% of 5-HMF yield with 96.1% fructose conversion rate is achieved after reacting at 130°C for 20 min, indicating that SCHOP-500 is a highly effective and efficient solid acid catalyst.
Catalytic Conversion of Fructose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural by a Novel Sulfonated Carbonaceous Material

Abstract:A novel sulfonated carbonaceous material was prepared through carbonization and sulfonation of a melamine formaldehyde resin, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), BET, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis and acidity measurement. The prepared sulfonated carbonaceous material was used to catalyze fructose dehydration to prepare 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and the effects of solvents, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time and fructose concentration on 5-HMF yield were investigated. The results show that 5-HMF yield of 79.8%could be obtained in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under the following optimum reaction conditions:the catalyst dosage is 5% of fructose input, reaction temperature 180℃, reaction time 30 min and fructose concentration 0.025 g×mL-1. 5-HMF yield only decreased 7.1% after the catalyst was reused for five times, which indicates good reusability of the catalyst.

Abstract:In this article, the recent research progress in the dehydration of carbohydrates for preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is summarized, including dehydration mechanism and product distribution, catalysts and solvents used, the separation of 5-HMF, as well as a brief prospective on this research field. At present, the most effective catalyst is CrCl2/[EMIM] system, but separation of the 5-HMF product is worthy to be concerned, especially the separation of 5-HMF from ionic liquid medium to make the latter reused.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a well-known value-added platform chemical, can be produced by biomass dehydration for the synthesis of bio-based liquid fuels. In this study, several kinds of saccharides that are widely available from biomass resources, namely, sucrose, maltose, cellobiose, lactose, inulin, and cellulose, were selected as feedstocks. A sulfonated ionic liquid catalyst was employed for the production of HMF from the selected saccharides in a renewable butanone-water solvent mixture. The yields of primary dehydration products versus time on stream from the saccharides were comparatively studied, and the distribution of the liquid-phase product was also analyzed. Results showed that the proposed reaction system could achieve fast conversion of disaccharides and polysaccharides with high selectivity toward HMF. Complete conversion of disaccharide and up to 65.1% yield of HMF were achieved within 1 min. Sucrose and inulin, which are rich in the fructose unit, showed the highest HMF selectivity. The next were maltose, cellobiose, and cellulose, which mainly consist of the glucose unit. They produced more oxygenated aliphatics than sucrose and inulin via side reactions. Lactose had the lowest HMF selectivity and tended to be converted into furan byproducts during the dehydration process.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) had shown a great catalytic effect in the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), but the dehydration mechanism remains ambiguous. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations had been carried out for the dehydration mechanism of fructose to HMF catalyzed by functionalized ILs. Different kinds of functionalized imidazolium-based cations, and SO3 group-based anions ILs were used to investigate the catalytic effect of different anions and cations on the dehydration of fructose. The whole reaction process of fructose to HMF includes three dehydration steps. The overall rate-determining step was the second dehydration, and the functionalized cations had a good proton transferability to catalyze the reaction in the dehydration steps. The proton shuttle ability of cations is better than that of anions. The anions can form strong H-bonds with the fructose and cations, and provide a polar environment to stabilize intermediates and transition states. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the synergetic catalysis of cations and anions to complete the dehydration of fructose. Finally, the dehydration reaction mechanism from fructose to HMF catalyzed by [BmimHSO3][HSO4] functionalized ILs had been proposed by DFT calculations. This present study emphasizes the catalytic performance of the functionalized ILs replaced by different substituent groups and dehydration mechanism of fructose to HMF.

Abstract:A two-step process combining the (equilibrium) glucose isomerization to fructose with selective dehydration of fructose in the obtained sugar mixture to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), where glucose is largely unconverted and recycled, represents an attractive concept to increase the overall efficiency for HMF synthesis. This work presents experimental and modelling studies on the conversion of such fructose-glucose mixture to HMF using the sulfuric acid catalyst in a water-methyl isobutyl ketone biphasic system under a wide range of conditions (e.g., temperature, catalyst and sugar concentrations). Through detailed product analyses and ESI-MS spectroscopy, the excess formation of formic acid (together with humins) by the direct sugar/HMF degradation was confirmed and included in the reaction network (neglected in most literatures). The kinetic modelling based on batch experiments in monophasic water well describes the measurements thereof, whereas distinct deviations were found in the prediction of typical literature kinetic models. The incorporation of HMF equilibrium extraction into the developed kinetic model, with consideration of phase volume change as a function of temperature and partial phase miscibility, enables to predict reaction results in the biphasic system in batch. This kinetic model allows to optimize conditions for HMF synthesis that are favored in continuous reactors with minimized back mixing. Based on the model implications, the biphasic system was optimized with slug flow microreactors to better address process intensification and scale-up aspects. Using a simulated fructose-glucose mixture feedstock to represent commercially available high fructose corn syrups, a maximum HMF yield of 81% was obtained at 155 °C over 0.05 M H2SO4 at a residence time of 16 min in the microreactor, with 96% fructose conversion and over 95% of glucose remaining unconverted.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: To invesigate the effect of pore structure on catalysis behavior, three sulfonated carbons with hierarchically ordered pores (SCHOP), mesopores (SMC), or micropores (SAC) were compared in conversion of fructose with 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF). Fructose and 5-HMF adsorption by three carbons with different pore structures were also measured. Kinetic modeling was employed to correlate the reaction and the adsorption data. RESULTS: SEM characterization showed that SCHOP has hierarchical ordered macropores (about 220 nm in pore diameter) and mesopores (4.81 nm), whereas N-2 adsorption desorption, EDS and -SO3H group determination suggested both its specific surface area and -SO3H group content were close to those of SMC but quite distinct in comparison with SAC. The fitted active energies of fructose dehydration over SCHOP, SMC and SAC by a pseudo-first-order kinetic model were 84.54, 62.88, and 61.42 kJ mol-1, respectively. CONCLUSION: It was found that pore structure has a significant effect on catalytic activity and 5-HMF selectivity. SCHOP was a highly efficient catalyst for fructose dehydration to 5-HMF. Adsorption capacity measurement confirmed SCHOP favored the internal diffusion of both fructose and 5-HMF due to its hierarchical ordered porous structure, and possessed more effective specific area for fructose but less for 5-HMF. In the presence of SCHOP the rate-determining step was chemical reaction, whereas in the case of SMC or SAC the effects of molecular internal diffusion were not negligible. Abstract:A series of organic sulfonate inner salts, viz., aprotic imidazolium- and pyridinium-based zwitterions bearing sulfonate groups (-SO3-), were synthesized for the catalytic conversion of fructose-based carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The dramatic cooperation of both the cation and anion of inner salts played a crucial role in the HMF formation. The inner salts have excellent solvent compatibility, and 4-(pyridinium)butane sulfonate (PyBS) affords the highest catalytic activity with 88.2 and 95.1% HMF yields at almost full conversion of fructose in low-boiling-point protic solvent isopropanol (i-PrOH) and aprotic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. The substrate tolerance of aprotic inner salt was also studied through changing the substrate type, demonstrating its excellent specificity for catalytic valorization of fructose-moiety-containing C6 sugars, such as sucrose and inulin. Meanwhile, the neutral inner salt is structurally stable and reusable; after being recycled four times, the catalyst showed no appreciable loss of its catalytic activity. The plausible mechanism has been elucidated based on the dramatic cooperative effect of both the cation and sulfonate anion of inner salts. The noncorrosive, nonvolatile, and generally nonhazardous aprotic inner salt used in this study will benefit many biochemical-related applications.
