Abstract:It is always the emphasis of research about how to realize auto-focus quickly and effectively in imaging system. This paper put forward algorithms that can enhance edge features in images for improving auto-focus capability and compares the usual edge-enhance filters with wavelet-based filters. Experimental data shows that although both the usual edge-enhance filters and wavelet-based filters improve the focus capability the latter can detect slightly defocused images more effectively. Therefor they have a good future in application.

Abstract:We propose to use a super-structured waveplate (called an S-waveplate) for vectorial optical vortex filtering, and experimentally demonstrate the radial Hilbert transform and selective edge enhancement. Based on the Jones calculus of polarization states and Fourier analysis, we calculate and analyze the point spread function of an optical 4-f system including an S-waveplate filter having the vectorial vortex of topological charge 1 (TC = 1). Numerical simulations and optical experiments demonstrate that a vectorial optical vortex filter can be used to implement selective edge enhancement with an analyzer before the output plane. The edge enhancement can be obtained even when the center of the filter is off-axis or the illuminating light is non-monochromatic.

Abstract:An approach for edge-enhanced imaging based on the optical element that generates a curvilinear vortex beam with intensity and phase distributions along arbitrary curves was proposed, which is different from the classic edge-enhanced imaging method with a 4f imaging system. It is demonstrated that the image edge can be enhanced by modulating the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beam with a ring or ellipse trajectory. By setting the factor that determines the ring or elliptical trajectory of the curvilinear vortex beam, the intensity distribution of the optical element can be controlled, resulting in directional enhancement of the image. Furthermore, by clipping the optical element, the image edge can be enhanced in the selective region. It is helpful for the further applications of the optical element that generates the curvilinear vortex beams in optical imaging, especially higher contrast and resolution images.

Abstract:Edge enhancement, as an important part of image processing, has played an essential role in amplitude-contrast and phase-contrast object imaging. The edge enhancement of three-dimensional (3D) vortex imaging has been successfully implemented by Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH), but the background noise and image contrast effects are still not satisfactory. To solve these issues, the edge enhancement of FINCH by employing Bessel-like spiral phase modulation is proposed and demonstrated. Compared with the conventional spiral phase modulated FINCH, the proposed technique can achieve high-quality edge enhancement 3D vortex imaging with lower background noise, higher contrast and resolution. The significantly improved imaging quality is mainly attributed to the effective sidelobes' suppression in the generated optical vortices with the Bessel-like modulation technique. Experimental results of the small circular aperture, resolution target, and the Drosophila melanogaster verify its excellent imaging performance. Moreover, we also proposed a new method for selective edge enhancement of 3D vortex imaging by breaking the symmetry of the spiral phase in the algorithmic model of isotropic edge enhancement. The reconstructed images of the circular aperture show that the proposed method is able to enhance the edges of the given objects selectively in any desired direction.
Single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with localized vortex phase

Abstract:Microscopy is an essential tool in imaging research, and the edge-enhanced microscope by using the vortex filter is of particular interest as an optical information processing that highlights amplitude and phase edges of object in all directions. The application of this technique is not limited to the visible range, but edge enhancement of object in invisible wavelength is also crucial for near-infrared fluorescence and electronic circuit inspection through silicon semiconductors. One disadvantage of near-infrared imaging is that digital cameras such as CCD and CMOS become much more expensive than cameras for the visible spectrum. As an cost-effective method to implement invisible edge enhancement, the Fourier single-pixel imaging has already been proposed without using a camera, but using a single-pixel detector. However, this method requires 3 or 4 times more single-pixel measurements due to the three-phase or four-phase shift to detect optical complex amplitude in Fourier domain. In response, we propose a method for single-pixel edge enhancement of object via convolutional filtering with a localized vortex phase, eliminating the extra single-pixel measurements required by the phase-shifting method. Our simulation results show that the correlation coefficient between the ideal edges of an object and the edge enhanced by our proposed method is 0.95, indicating that our method is effective way to detect the edges. This novel and effective approach for enhancing and detecting the edges of object can be valuable in various invisible imaging applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a lensless imaging system with edge-enhanced imaging constructed with a Fresnel zone aperture (FZA) mask placed 3 mm away from a CMOS sensor. We propose vortex back-propagation (vortex-BP) and amplitude vortex-BP algorithms for the FZA-based lensless imaging system to remove the noise and achieve the fast reconstruction of high contrast edge enhancement. Directionally controlled anisotropic edge enhancement can be achieved with our proposed superimposed vortex-BP algorithm. With different reconstruction algorithms, the proposed amp-vortex edge-camera in this paper can achieve 2D bright filed imaging, isotropic, and directional controllable anisotropic edge-enhanced imaging with incoherent light illumination, by a single-shot captured hologram. The effect of edge detection is the same as optical edge detection, which is the re-distribution of light energy. Noise-free in-focus edge detection can be achieved by using back-propagation, without a de-noise algorithm, which is an advantage over other lensless imaging technologies. This is expected to be widely used in autonomous driving, artificial intelligence recognition in consumer electronics, etc.

Abstract:Recently, $4f$ system containing a q-plate has been used to perform edge detection and enhancement of amplitude and phase objects. However, only few studies have concentrated on edge enhancement of phase-amplitude objects. Here, we experimentally verified the functional difference between scalar and vectorial vortex filtering using an onion cell, the experimental results agree well with theoretical analysis. We verified our experimental results through numerical simulation. Although vectorial vortex filtering successfully enhanced the edges of phase and amplitude objects in the phase-amplitude object, they are indistinguishable due to the equal enhancement of the edges of the phase and amplitude objects. To address this, we propose a method to isolate the edge of the phase object from the edge of the amplitude object using off-axis beam illumination. We theoretically calculated the isolation of the edge of the phase object from the amplitude object, and verified via numerical simulations.

Abstract:Some previous edge preserving smoothing methods suffer from halo artifacts when they are applied for image enhancement. In this paper, an edge preserving random walk filter is proposed, our method suffers free from artifacts. Unlike previous methods, the proposed method is able to obtain a smoothing result by just solving a system of linear equation. The proposed filter is then adopted to design an image enhancement algorithm. By just amplifying and adding the detail layer to the base layer, the algorithm can produce a satisfactory result. The simulation results demonstrate that our approach performs much better than other existing techniques.

Abstract:Edge extraction using a time-varying vortex beam (TV-VB) is demonstrated in optical scanning holography (OSH) operating in an incoherent mode. OSH is a two-pupil heterodyne scanning optical system. We propose that one of the pupil functions used is a delta function and the other pupil function is a spiral phase plate (SPP). The interference of these pupils creates a TV-VB to scan over an object to record the edge-only information of an object holographically. We also find that a reconstructed edge with better contrast is achieved by translating the SPP away from the pupil plane. Experimental results are compared with computer simulations and found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:Based on analyze the distribute difference between random noise and fixed noise,this article advance the definitions of local gravitation coordinate and local balance coefficient.Due to this two definitions,distinguish the grey level changes caused by real edges or noise in the infrared image.An algorithm based on the local balance coefficient and the local contrast coefficient was advanced.Different from the traditional sharpen algorithm,this algorithm consider the spatial difference between the real edge and the fixed noise.So this algorithm not only reduce the enhancement to random noise,but also to the fixed.As it is shown in experiments,the edge of the image is sharpen and the noise is suppressed.This algorithm has practicality and potential application value in the field of infrared images contrast enhancement.

Abstract:Image enhancement is important given that it can be used to highlight the area of interest in the images. This article designs four filters via special function for realizing image enhancement. Firstly, a filter based on the exponential function is designed. When the value of the progression is even, the edge feature can be extracted. When the value of the progression is odd, sharp contrast can be obtained. Secondly, a filter is built using hyperbolic cosine and its inverse function, where a printmaking feature can be extracted. Thirdly, a filter is made via a hyperbolic secant function and its inverse. It can lead to the extraction of image edge. When the progression value is increasing, marginal effect can be found and the brightness is decreasing. Ripple morphology can be found. Fourthly, a filter is constructed through a hyperbolic sine function and its inverse, where marginal features can be extracted. Furthermore, these filters are useful for extracting the marginal features even when a high noise density of 0.9 is added to the original images. They are useful for highlighting the images acquired from near infrared imaging.
A Fast Image Enhancement Algorithm Based on Multi-scale Edges Representation of Images

Abstract:Low contrast structure can be found in many kinds of digital images, and it is a meaningful work to find out how to enhance these raw images through digital post-processing. A novel enhancement algorithm based on multi-scale edges representation of images is proposed. This algorithm is motivated by the connection between the contrast of a grayscale image and the gradient magnitude of intensity edges in the neighborhood where the contrast is measured. The undecimated dyadic wavelet transform of the original image is computed firstly by treating the columns and lines of the image separately, and then the local maxima of wavelet transform coefficients are selected out. The reconstruction of the image can be interpreted as an interpolation process, which recovers the wavelet coefficients between two consecutive modulus maxima and then calculates the inverse wavelet transform. As we know, the first derivatives of the modulus maxima are zero, and the Hermite polynomial requires the value of derivatives at the given nodes. Based on these two facts, the wavelet coefficients can be reconstructed using Hermite interpolation polynomial of degree 3 between any two adjacent maxima. By means of stretching those maxima at different levels and interpolating them with Hermite interpolation polynomials, the image can be enhanced effectively, and the different stretching factors on different levels can provide various kinds of enhancing effects, while this kind of enhancing flexibility cannot be found in other algorithms easily. This algorithm also offers abilities to control noise magnification and to enhance features of certain size within the images. Numerical experiments show that, the method can get fairly well enhancement result and the computing complexity can be low, so it is a practical fast enhancement algorithm.

Abstract:Based on the radial Hilbert transform of spatial filtering and electro-optical sampling, we propose a broadband terahertz edge-enhanced imaging method in this work. Instead of using a narrow-band THz vortex phase plate, here we use vortex ultrashort laser pulse to realize the THz enhancement imaging which can be applied for few-cycle THz imaging. The principle of edge enhancement is analyzed theoretically, and the analytical expression of the final terahertz imaging is derived. We found that edge-enhancement imaging corresponds to the nonlinear term of the THz field, and the background and linear terms can be suppressed when the static birefringent phase is set to zero. The simulations show that our method can effectively improve the contrast and signal-to-noise ratio of terahertz imaging.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a lensless coding edge enhancement imaging technology based on a spiral zone aperture whose system comprises a spiral zone aperture and an image sensor. A captured image is reconstructed by backpropagation. In backpropagation, isotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the intensity value, whereas anisotropic edge enhancement imaging can be realized by taking the real or imaginary part. The theoretical derivation and verification of the anisotropy edge enhancement imaging achieved by taking the real part are performed, and an initial phase factor is introduced to realize the anisotropic edge enhancement imaging with selective directions. Our numerical simulations and experimental results verify the consistency between theoretical analysis and experimental results, and a quantitative comparative analysis is performed for the edge enhancement reconstruction results using the lensless imaging system with Fresnel and spiral zone apertures respectively. The results verify that a spiral zone aperture is more suitable for edge enhancement imaging. The proposed technology can be applied to intelligent recognition, defect detection, and virtual reality tasks.

Abstract:In Order to improve the quality of the infrared image, a kind of algorithm based on fuzzy-set and multi-scale wavelet decomposition (FSMW) to enhance the edge without the noise enhancement is advanced in this paper. Because the details and the noise of the image are difficult to distinguish and the edges are distributed in multi-scales, the membership functions in each scales of the noise, the low and high intensity gradient edge are established respectivly. And then the image gray-level plane is transformed into fuzzy plane based on the fuzzy membership functions. Finally the sharpening parameters are controlled by the fuzzy plane and the result is reconstructed by wavelet reconstruction function. As it is shown in experiments, the edges distributed in multiscales of the image are sharpened and the noise is suppressed This algorithm has practicality and potential application value in the field of infrared images enhancement.

Abstract:A new method for image edge enhancement is proposed. Only simply adjusting the light intensity ratio of the reference light and the object light, recording a Fourier transformation hologram under nonlinear conditions, the differential operation for image can be achieved. The principle of the nonlinear effect of holographic recording making the image obtain differential result was theoretically analyzed. The experimental results are given.

Abstract:To efficiently reduce the required measurement count for single-pixel imaging edge detection, this study devises an edge detection model based on W-transform single-pixel imaging. In this model, the convolution of the DoG (Difference of Gaussians) operator and W-transform basis patterns as modulation patterns are employed to directly extract edge information from the spectral domain of the target object. Different from traditional methods, it achieves the extraction of edge details from an object without imaging. Numerical simulations and experimental results demonstrate that this model extracts edges with higher signal-to-noise ratios compared to the edge extraction using phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns. Additionally, the proposed model reduces the number of modulation patterns required by half, so as to gain double efficiency. The integration of W-transform single-pixel imaging with edge detection offers a novel approach for edge detections without the need for imaging.

Abstract:With the development of optical information processing technology, image edge detection has been widely used in optical high-contrast imaging, automatic driving, face recognition, astronomical observation and other fields. Optical edge detection mainly employs 4-f spatial filtering imaging system with a filtering element in a Fourier plane to modify the spectral information of the image, which results in a strong edge enhancement of object structures. In this paper, several different methods of optical image edge detection and their theoretical analyses are demonstrated. Besides, relevant research progresses at home and abroad are reviewed.
