Abstract:Abstract Representatives of arthropods, the largest animal phylum, occupy terrestrial, aquatic, arboreal, and subterranean niches. Their evolutionary success depends on specific morphological and biomechanical adaptations related to their materials and structures. Biologists and engineers have become increasingly interested in exploring these natural solutions to understand relationships between structures, materials, and their functions in living organisms. The aim of this special issue is to present the state-of-the-art research in this interdisciplinary field using modern methodology, such as imaging techniques, mechanical testing, movement capture, and numerical modeling. It contains nine original research reports covering diverse topics, including flight, locomotion, and attachment of the arthropods. The research achievements are essential not only to understand ecological adaptations, and evolutionary and behavioral traits, but also to drive prominent advances for engineering from exploitation of numerous biomimetic ideas.

Abstract:Many insects are capable of developing into either long-winged or short-winged (or wingless) morphs, which enables them to rapidly match heterogeneous environments. Thus, the wing polymorphism is an adaptation at the root of their ecological success. Wing polymorphism is orchestrated at various levels, starting with the insect's perception of environmental cues, then signal transduction and signal execution, and ultimately the transmitting of signals into physiological adaption in accordance with the particular morph produced. Juvenile hormone and ecdysteroid pathways have long been proposed to regulate wing polymorphism in insects, but rigorous experimental evidence is lacking. The breakthrough findings of ecdysone receptor regulation on transgenerational wing dimorphism in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum and of insulin signaling in the planthopper Nilaparvata lugens greatly broaden our understanding of wing polymorphism at the molecular level. Recently, the advent of high-throughput sequencing coupled with functional genomics provides powerful genetic tools for future insights into the molecular bases underlying wing polymorphism in insects.

Abstract:Over the course of their wildly successful proliferation across the earth, the insects as a taxon have evolved enviable adaptations to their diverse habitats, which include adhesives, locomotor systems, hydrophobic surfaces, and sensors and actuators that transduce mechanical, acoustic, optical, thermal, and chemical signals. Insect-inspired designs currently appear in a range of contexts, including antireflective coatings, optical displays, and computing algorithms. However, as over one million distinct and highly specialized species of insects have colonized nearly all habitable regions on the planet, they still provide a largely untapped pool of unique problem-solving strategies. With the intent of providing materials scientists and engineers with a muse for the next generation of bioinspired materials, here, a selection of some of the most spectacular adaptations that insects have evolved is assembled and organized by function. The insects presented display dazzling optical properties as a result of natural photonic crystals, precise hierarchical patterns that span length scales from nanometers to millimeters, and formidable defense mechanisms that deploy an arsenal of chemical weaponry. Successful mimicry of these adaptations may facilitate technological solutions to as wide a range of problems as they solve in the insects that originated them.

Biodiversity and Activity of the Gut Microbiota Across the Life History of the Insect Herbivore Spodoptera Littoralis

Abstract:Microbes that live inside insects play critical roles in host nutrition, physiology, and behavior. Although Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are one of the most diverse insect taxa, their microbial symbionts are little-studied, particularly during metamorphosis. Here, using ribosomal tag pyrosequencing of DNA and RNA, we investigated biodiversity and activity of gut microbiotas across the holometabolous life cycle of Spodoptera littoralis, a notorious agricultural pest worldwide. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes dominate but undergo a structural "metamorphosis" in tandem with its host. Enterococcus, Pantoea and Citrobacter were abundant and active in early-instar, while Clostridia increased in late-instar. Interestingly, only enterococci persisted through metamorphosis. Female adults harbored high proportions of Enterococcus, Klebsiella and Pantoea, whereas males largely shifted to Klebsiella. Comparative functional analysis with PICRUSt indicated that early-instar larval microbiome was more enriched for genes involved in cell motility and carbohydrate metabolism, whereas in late-instar amino acid, cofactor and vitamin metabolism increased. Genes involved in energy and nucleotide metabolism were abundant in pupae. Female adult microbiome was enriched for genes relevant to energy metabolism, while an increase in the replication and repair pathway was observed in male. Understanding the metabolic activity of these herbivore-associated microbial symbionts may assist the development of novel pest-management strategies.

Metamorphosis is the biological process through which insect larvae develop into pupae and pupae develop into adults. It is divided into five types on the basis of the degree of morphological change that takes place, these types are; anamorphosis, epimorphosis, prometamorphosis, and incomplete and complete metamorphosis. Metamorphosis in insects is a complicated process that is accurately regulated by various factors, such as hormones, genes and nutrients. This review provides a brief description of the types of insect metamorphosis and their molecular regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract:Cyborg insects are a convergence of biological organisms and artificial machinery, which is often referred to as insect-machine hybrid systems. These systems utilize an insect-machine interface (IMI) to gain control of the locomotion of insects and to facilitate the manipulation of their natural movement patterns. This control is achieved through external stimulus of the insect's peripheral or central nervous system and muscle fibers. Cyborg insects offer notable advantages over their counterparts-micro or bionic mobile robots-that merely mimic the physical attributes and movement patterns of insects. These benefits encompass: (1) The elimination of the need for complex designs associated with mechanical structure, drive, and control systems. This simplifies the developmental process substantially. (2) The integration of the superior sensorimotor performance of insects, which have been honed and refined through millions of years of evolution, providing them with an inherent, natural advantage. (3) The unique design where system power is supplied exclusively to control and communication modules, facilitating efficient command issuance and data transmission. (4) A compact size and natural insect-like appearance, making them virtually undetectable to both humans and other animals, thus offering exceptional stealth capabilities. (5) The mature feeding technology reduces the cost of insect culture, and makes the development cost of insect machine mixing system into controllable. Cyborg insects amalgamate the sensory cognition and movement capabilities inherent to insects with the high precision and controllability characteristic of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). This unique combination addresses and compensates for the limitations of micro robots, particularly concerning motion speed, distance, and payload. The attributes of straightforward system structure, exceptional motion perception, low energy consumption, and superior stealth make cyborg insects extremely valuable in both scientific research and practical engineering applications. Their stability across diverse motion modes makes them particularly suitable for complex real-world scenarios. For instance, they can be employed in search, rescue, and reconnaissance operations in disaster environments, especially those characterized by narrow, intricate terrains. Moreover, insect-machine hybrid systems offer a unique, versatile research platform with easily adjustable variables, providing promising opportunities for in-depth studies in neuroscience, entomology, and bionics. In this review, we first provide a comprehensive summary of the insect-machine hybrid system architecture, followed by a critical review of the significant strides made in the development of typical insect-machine hybrid systems based on different control principled. We aim to encapsulate the critical components that influence the locomotion control of these hybrid systems, including the characteristics of neuromechanism, neuromodulation methods, microstimulation systems, and control strategies. We also explore the significant research findings concerning several typical cyborg insects in detail. These findings are categorized based on virtual sensation, muscle execution, and central decision-making, all of which are grounded in the context of the neuromechanism. Additionally, to exploit cyborg insects effectively for practical applications, we delineate a research framework that addresses future cyborg insects, considering the current technical bottlenecks. We further discuss the technical challenges associated with cyborg insects, focusing on the sensorimotor neural mechanism of insects, neuromodulation methods, microcontrol systems and intelligent control strategies. In conclusion, we present an insightful forecast into the future research directions that hold promise in overcoming these challenges and unleashing the full potential of insect-machine hybrid systems. The journey towards these exciting prospects may prove transformative in our understanding of biology, technology, and the inspiring interface where they converge.

Abstract:Insects,the largest group of muhicellular organisms on the Earth,are notable for their numerous species and varied morphology,generally harboring abundant microbes in their digestive tract.These microorganisms help the host in digestion,nutrition absorption,pheromone synthesis,as well as playing a role in the defense of harmful invaders,which strengthen the host immune activity.Lepidoptera is the second largest order in Insecta,with many common pest and beneficial insect species.Many methods and techniques have been developed for the research on the gut microbiota,which becomes a hot research topic in recent years.This review outlines the research of gut microbiota in lepidopteran insects (e.g.,Bombyx mori,Spodoptera littoralis and Plutella xylostella),including gut environment,microbial diversity and research methods.Furthermore,the community structure of several lepidopteran model insects and the roles of gut microbes in host's detoxification and immune system are summarized.The findings we review here should be valuable for the further research on the gut microbiota in lepidopteran insects,and pave the way for developing novel strategies to control pests and protect beneficial insects.

Abstract:Purpose– Entomology is a useful tool when applied to engineering challenges that have been solved in nature. Abstract:Eight structural elements in biological materials are identified as the most common amongst a variety of animal taxa. These are proposed as a new paradigm in the field of biological materials science as they can serve as a toolbox for rationalizing the complex mechanical behavior of structural biological materials and for systematizing the development of bioinspired designs for structural applications. They are employed to improve the mechanical properties, namely strength, wear resistance, stiffness, flexibility, fracture toughness, and energy absorption of different biological materials for a variety of functions (e.g., body support, joint movement, impact protection, weight reduction). The structural elements identified are: fibrous, helical, gradient, layered, tubular, cellular, suture, and overlapping. For each of the structural design elements, critical design parameters are presented along with constitutive equations with a focus on mechanical properties. Additionally, example organisms from varying biological classes are presented for each case to display the wide variety of environments where each of these elements is present. Examples of current bioinspired materials are also introduced for each element.

Using controlled vocabularies in anatomical terminology: A case study with Strumigenys (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Abstract:Morphological studies of insects can help us to understand the concomitant or sequential functionality of complex structures and may be used to hypothetize distinct levels of phylogenetic relationship among groups. Traditional morphological works, generally, have encompassed a set of elements, including descriptions of structures and their respective conditions, literature references and images, all combined in a single document. Fast forward to the digital era, it is now possible to release this information simultaneously but also independently as data sets linked to the original publication in an external environment. In order to link data from various fields of knowledge, disseminating morphological information in an open environment, it is important to use tools that enhance interoperability. For example, semantic annotations facilitate the dissemination and retrieval of phenotypic data in digital environments. The integration of semantic (i.e. web-based) components with anatomic treatments can be used to generate a traditional description in natural language along with a set of semantic annotations. The ant genus Strumigenys currently comprises about 840 described species distributed worldwide. In the Neotropical region, almost 200 species are currently known, but it is possible that much of the species' diversity there remains unexplored and undescribed. The morphological diversity in the genus is high, reflecting an extreme generic reclassification that occurred in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Here we define the anatomical concepts in this highly diverse group of ants using semantic annotations to enrich the anatomical ontologies available online, focussing on the definition of terms through subjacent conceptualization.

Abstract:This research presents a 10-year systematic review based on bibliometric analysis of the bio-inspired design of hard-bodied mobile robot mechatronic systems considering the anatomy of arthropods. These are the most diverse group of animals whose flexible biomechanics and adaptable morphology, thus, it can inspire robot development. Papers were reviewed from two international databases (Scopus and Web of Science) and one platform (Aerospace Research Central), then they were classified according to: year of publication (January 2013 to April 2023), arthropod group, published journal, conference proceedings, editorial publisher, research teams, robot classification according to the name of arthropod, limb's locomotion support, number of legs/arms, number of legs/body segments, limb's degrees of freedom, mechanical actuation type, modular system, and environment adaptation. During the screening, more than 33000 works were analyzed. Finally, a total of 174 studies (90 journal-type, 84 conference-type) were selected for in-depth study: Insecta - hexapod (53,8%), Arachnida - octopods (20.7%), Crustacea - decapods (16,1%), and Myriapoda – centipedes and millipedes (9,2%). The study reveals that the most active editorials are the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., Springer, MDPI, and Elsevier, while the most influential researchers are located in the USA, China, Singapore, and Japan. Most works pertained to spiders, crabs, caterpillars, cockroaches, and centipedes. We conclude that "arthrobotics" research, which merges arthropods and robotics, is constantly growing and includes a high number of relevant studies with findings that can inspire new methods to design biomechatronic systems.

Abstract:The stinkbugs of the infraorder Pentatomomorpha are a group of important plant sap-feeding insects, which host diverse microorganisms. Some are located in their complex morphological midgut compartments, while some within the specialized bacteriomes of insect hosts. This perpetuation of symbioses through host generations is reinforced via the diverse routes of vertical transmission or environmental acquisition of the symbionts. These symbiotic partners, reside either through the extracellular associations in midgut or intracellular associations in specialized cells, not only have contributed nutritional benefits to the insect hosts but also shaped their ecological and evolutionary basis. The stinkbugs and gut microbe symbioses present a valuable model that provides insights into symbiotic interactions between agricultural insects and microorganisms and may become potential agents for insect pest management.

Abstract:Insects are among the most diverse and successful groups of animals and exhibit great morphological diversity and complexity. The innovation of wings and metamorphosis are some examples of the fascinating biological evolution of insects. Most microRNAs (miRNAs) contribute to canalization by conferring robustness to gene networks and thus increase the heritability of important phenotypes. Though previous studies have demonstrated how miRNAs regulate important phenotypes, little is still known about miRNA evolution in insects. Here, we used both small RNA-seq data and homology searching methods to annotate the miRNA repertoires of 152 arthropod species, including 135 insects and 17 noninsect arthropods. We identified 16,212 miRNA genes, and classified them into highly conserved (62), insect-conserved (90), and lineage-specific (354) miRNA families. The phylogenetic relationship of miRNA binary presence/absence dynamics implies that homoplastic loss of conserved miRNA families tends to occur in far-related morphologically simplified taxa, including scale insects (Coccoidea) and twisted-wing insects (Strepsiptera), leading to inconsistent phylogenetic tree reconstruction. The common ancestor of Insecta shares 62 conserved miRNA families, of which five were rapidly gained in the early winged-insects (Pterygota). We also detected extensive miRNA losses in Paraneoptera that are correlated with morphological reduction, and miRNA gains in early Endopterygota around the time holometabolous metamorphosis appeared. This was followed by abundant miRNA gains in Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera. In summary, we provide a comprehensive data set and a detailed evolutionary analysis of miRNAs in insects. These data will be important for future studies on miRNA functions associated with insect morphological innovation and trait biodiversity.

Abstract:Abstract Microbes through its symbiotic relationship between the host and their invaded organisms, owes a major part in nature as well as the evolutionary processes. Insects are the most diversified fauna with stable surveillance in innumerable ecological niches. Many among those act as secondary symbionts as well. These symbiotic connotations originated more recently and can be ephemeral. In some cases, the direct contact with the host also is not needed in a population for these organisms to survive. Because when the primary symbionts transfer the genes directly from mother to progeny, the secondary symbionts do it through several means. This chapter reviews the association between insect gut microbiomes and their interactions with the environment. Recent insights and potential applications of the insect gut microbiome will provide a metagenomic thorough knowledge of the microbial census in the insect gut.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an approach that can simulate the behavior of insects, and the aggressive behavior of fruit flies is shown as an example. The specific workflow is as follows. (1) We obtained high-speed camera video of the fly's aggressive behavior. (2) Based on the high-speed camera video, we generated the key action diagrams for each movement. (3, 4) We used micro-computed tomography imaging to segment the leg exoskeleton models using Amira 6.0. (5) With the Blender software, we optimized the OBJ model. (6) We gave motion properties to the 3-dimensional biomechanical model in Blender. (7) Based on high-speed camera videos and the key action diagrams, we generated a 4-dimensional precision adult Drosophila melanogaster biomechanical model. Our study provides a new approach to study rapid locomotion in insects. In addition, our study provides a new idea for establishment of a 4D database, the design and fabrication of bionic multipedal robots, and the linking of nerve signaling and muscle stretching processes.

Abstract:Modern material design aims to achieve multifunctionality through integrating structures in a diverse range, resulting in simple materials with embedded functions. Biological materials and organisms are typical examples of this concept, where complex functionalities are achieved through a limited material base. This review highlights the multiscale structural and functional integration of representative natural organisms and materials, as well as biomimetic examples. The impact, wear, and crush resistance properties exhibited by mantis shrimp and ironclad beetle during predation or resistance offer valuable inspiration for the development of structural materials in the aerospace field. Investigating cyanobacteria that thrive in extreme environments can contribute to developing living materials that can serve in places like Mars. The exploration of shape memory and the self-repairing properties of spider silk and mussels, as well as the investigation of sensing-actuating and sensing-camouflage mechanisms in Banksias, chameleons, and moths, holds significant potential for the optimization of soft robot designs. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of mussel and gecko adhesion mechanisms can have a profound impact on medical fields, including tissue engineering and drug delivery. In conclusion, the integration of structure and function is crucial for driving innovations and breakthroughs in modern engineering materials and their applications. The gaps between current biomimetic designs and natural organisms are also discussed.
