Abstract:Rope jumping is a popular sport and widely-used training tool among teenagers, adults and professional athletes in China where its energy expenditure characteristics based on Chinese population haven’t been published officially yet. PURPOSE: To determine and compare exercise intensity (EI), energy expenditure (EE) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) between 3 different paces of rope jumping using indirect calorimetry (IDC) and heart rate (HR) monitor and to estimate EE with HR. METHODS: 36 Chinese college students (F/M = 1/1, Age = 22.1 ± 2.0 yrs, BMI = 21.7 ± 2.3) completed 4 exercise protocols including a 1-min all-out rope jumping test and slow pace (SP), moderate pace (MP), fast pace (FP) rope jumping test (3-min each) during which participants followed metronome cadences of 60, 100, 130 bpm respectively and actual skips were recorded. The respiratory response and HR were measured by IDC and HR monitor continuously before (15-min), during (1-min or 3-min) and after (at least 15-min, until recover to baseline) each test. RESULTS: There were significant differences in EI, EE and EPOC among rope jumping at different paces (p < 0.05) excpet between MP and FP (p > 0.05) (Table 1, *indicates comparing with LS, p < 0.05; ** indicates p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in metabolic equivalent (METs) between genders (p > 0.05; M vs. F: SP 9.1 ± 1.05 vs. 9.7 ± 1.31; MP 9.85 ± 1.33 vs. 10.5 ± 0.76; FP 10.2 ± 1.29 vs. 10.6 ± 0.90). When using HR to develop a prediction model to estimate EE, considering gender and pace, moderate to strong correlations were found between HR% (HR / HRmax*100%, HRmax obtained from 1-min all-out test) and METs (r = 0.57-0.79, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: 3-min rope jumping is a short-term and high energy consuming (during and after exercise) sport where MP (80-120 skips/min) and FP(121-160 skips/min)have similar energy expenditure characteristics. HR can be an effective parameter to estimate EE and monitor EI during rope jumping.
