Abstract:The desorptive fluent couldn't be disposed easily because of its dilute concentration and its adherence to adsorbents in the application of resins with the method of adsorption. A comparison of properties between the polystyrene resin modified by phenolic hydroxyl group and XAD-4 and NDA150 for adsorbing the phenol in the aqueous solution were made. The results show that the performance of the resin modified by phenolic hydroxyl group is improved and this resin will be applied widely for treating the wastewater containing phenolic compounds.
Lignosulfonate-Based Hybrid Hydrogels Functionalized with Hyperbranched Polyamide Amine as Ultra-High-Capacity Adsorbent for Congo Red Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Fast and efficient removal of organic dyes from industrial wastewater by practical and cost-effective adsorption method has been in the spotlight. Herein, lignosulfonate-based hybrid hydrogel adsorbents (HPAS) were one-pot synthesized via cross-linking reaction with lignosulfonate amine, hyperbranched polyamide amine, and polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, then were characterized by FTIR, XPS, and SEM measurements. The adsorption capacity of HPAS for separate organic dyes and metallic ion were further studied. HPAS with hierarchical porous structures showed ultra-high capacity for dye removal, especially for Congo red (CR). The actual maximum adsorption capacity of CR can reach 5120 mg/g, when the initial concentration of CR is 6000 mg/L, natural pH, temperature is 298 K, and the amount of adsorbent HPAS-4 is 0.8 g/L. Simultaneously, HPAS-4 also showed a relatively strong adsorption performance for Cu(II); the maximum uptake capacity was obtained at 249 mg/g (initial Cu(II) concentration = 100 mg/L). After 5 adsorption–desorption cycles, HPAS-4 still maintains a high adsorption capacity for CR and Cu(II). The CR and Cu(II) adsorption mechanisms by HPAS were further validated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption of CR and Cu(II) by HPAS was a spontaneous endothermic process, which conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption model. The key mechanism of CR adsorption process is H-bond interactions due to abundant N and O atoms in HPAS accompanied with electrostatic attraction and π-π stacking interaction. The adsorption of Cu(II) on HPAS is mainly determined by the complexation/chelation accompanied with precipitation of copper derivatives on HPAS. The results of this study provide a new method for the preparation of high-performance biomass-based adsorbents in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A series of aminated hypercrosslinked polymers (AH-1, AH-2 and AH-3) were prepared on the basis of the conventional chloromethylated low-crosslinked macroporous styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers by controlling the post-crosslinking reaction and surface modification with dimethylamine. Adsorption behaviour of resorcinol and catechol from aqueous solution onto the above aminated hypercrosslinked polymers and the hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent NDA-100 without amino groups was compared. It was found that the aminated hypercrosslinked polymers had higher adsorption capacities than NDA-100 due to the Lewis acid–base interaction between the phenolic compounds and the tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix. Specific surface area and micropore structure of the adsorbent, in company with tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix mutually affect the adsorption performance towards the both phenolic compounds. Additionally, more catechol is adsorbed than resorcinol due to the affinity towards water and position of the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring of the compound. Besides, thermodynamic study was carried out to interpret the adsorption mechanism. Kinetic study testified that the tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix could decrease the adsorption rate and increase the adsorption apparent activation energy.

Abstract:Polar organic compounds (POCs) are one of the main categories of pollutants in wastewater, and their effective removal is highly desirable. In this work a novel hyper-cross-linked polyphosphamide resin (HPR) with flexible structure and functional groups for POCs adsorption was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phenol, a typical POC, was used to test its adsorption amount. The experimental results showed that the polrner exhibited an excellent phenol adsorptive capacity of 516 mg g(-1) in phenol aqueous solution, though its surface area was 14.5 m(2) g(-1) only. The influences of pH, contact time, and the zero point charges of adsorption were investigated. This research provides a new and effective approach to separate and recover phenols, especially at a high concentration, from wastewater.

Abstract:Aminated polyacrylonitrile fibers (APANFs) were prepared by surface modification and were used as an adsorbent to remove humic acid from aqueous solutions. The APANFs were found to be very effective in removing humic acid at the pH range from 2 to 10. The adsorption isotherm obeyed both the Langmuir and Freundlich models, and the adsorption kinetics followed an initial diffusion-controlled and then an attachment-controlled adsorption pattern. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that chemical bonds were formed between the nitrogen atoms in the amine groups on the fibers and humic acid molecules adsorbed, suggesting that, besides electrostatic interaction, surface complexation also played an important role in humic acid adsorption on the APANFs. The humic acid adsorbed on the APANFs can be effectively desorbed in a 0.1 M NaOH solution, and the regenerated APANFs can be reused in the subsequent adsorption cycles without significant loss of the adsorption capacities.

Abstract:Two novel polymers (NJ-1 and NJ-2) were synthesized by chemically modified a hypercrosslinked polymer NJ-0 with dimethylamine and trimethylamine, respectively. The comparison of the adsorption properties of the three polymers toward phenol, resorcin and phloroglucin was made. The study focused on the static equilibrium adsorption behaviors and the adsorption thermodynamics. Freundlich equation was found to fit the adsorption results well. The effect of amino groups introduced onto the surface of the resin and the structure of phenolic compounds on the adsorption were also studied. The hydrogen-bonding interaction and electrostatic interaction could happen between the amino groups and the adsorbates. The adsorption impetus increased as quantity of hydroxyl groups increased, but the adsorption capacity decreased due to the drop of the matching degree of the aperture of resins and the diameter of adsorbate molecules.

Abstract:One of the challenges in water pollution control is the design of adsorbents aimed at achieving low cost, ultrafast, and selective adsorption of pollutants. Hypercrosslinked-polymers (HCPs) possess abundant microporous structures and advantages such as the ability to manipulate the framework structure, making them highly valuable in the field of adsorption. Three HCPs namely polythiophene (Th-1), polypyrrole (Py-1), and polyfuran (Fu-1) were synthesized through a Friedel's alkylation reaction utilizing different functional monomers (thiophene, pyrrole, and furan) employing a knitting strategy. The HCPs exhibit a heterocyclic structure (C-S-C, C-N-C, C-O-C) with remarkable charge selectivity as well as strong resistance to acids and alkalis. The HCPs, with varying functional monomers, demonstrate selective adsorption of dyes based on their charges and release of dyes dependent on solvent and pH conditions. The ease of synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and high reusability render these HCPs suitable for further design optimization through the utilization of diverse functional monomers to achieve efficient adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants from water.

Abstract:Water treatment faces significant challenges due to the increasing complexity of pollutants and the need for more efficient, sustainable treatment methods. However, current adsorbent materials often struggle with issues such as low adsorption capacity, slow kinetics, and poor reusability, limiting their practical application. In this study, we developed a novel hierarchical porous hybrid gel (HPHG) for water treatment to address the limitations of conventional adsorbents. The HPHG features a multi-level porous structure (from 48 ± 28 nm to 4385 ± 823 nm) that significantly enhances its porosity and specific surface area. We systematically investigated the relationship between the material's structure and its adsorption performance. Kinetic studies revealed a tendency towards a pseudo-second-order adsorption model, attributed to the material's unique structural features that facilitate rapid mass exchange channels inside HPHG and provide abundant active sites for pollutant adsorption. Reusability tests demonstrated that the material retained 85.4% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles, highlighting its potential for practical applications. This study provides valuable insights into structure-performance relationships in advanced water treatment materials, offering a promising approach for designing next-generation adsorbents with superior efficiency and sustainability.

Abstract:Three hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbents AH-1,AH-2 and AH-3,which were chemically modified by amination with dimethylamine,were employed to remove hydroquinone from aqueous solution through static experiments.A comparison of adsorption behaviors against the three functional resins,the hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent NDA-100 with no tertiary amino groups was made.It was found that the adsorption capacities of hydroquinone increased notablely on the hypercrosslinked resins after amination.The adsorptions of hydroqinone on the four hypercrosslinked resins were all spontaneous exothermic processes with physical characters.

Abstract:Characteristics of adsorption for aniline,phenol and benzoic acid were reported at different temperature onto the three adsorption resins of Amberlite XAD-4,AM-1 and JX101,and interpreted with frontier orbital theory.The results show that the energy level of LUMO or HOMO of adsorbents will be changed when the adsorbents were modified by the proper functional groups,which will induce the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate and the additional chemical adsorption capacities.

Efficient Adsorption of Oil in Water by Hydrophobic Nonwoven Fabrics Coated with Cross‐linked Polydivinylbenzene Fibers

Abstract:Background Oil pollution of water causes extensive damage to the environment and human health. Adsorption techniques are environmentally friendly and relatively feasible to treat oil contamination and reclaim oil resources, and it is essential to develop adsorbents that have high adsorption capacity for oil which can be recycled and regenerated conveniently to save money and resources. Results Hydrophobic nonwoven fabrics coated with polydivinylbenzene nanofibres (HNF-PDVB) were constructed by a one-step cation polymerization reaction. The results showed that the optimal concentration of OTS (octadecylsilane) for the modification of nonwoven fibers was 1.22 mL L(-1)of n-hexane. The HNF-PDVB showed relatively good performance in adsorbing oil from water, with adsorption capacity as high as 7.5 g g-1. Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevic isotherms fitted well with the experimental data. The kinetic data fitted better to the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models, and the parameters indicated that the adsorption by HNF-PDVB involved macropores that contributed to the rapid and high-capacity adsorption, as well as micropores that resulted in the diffusion of oil in the nanofibres. Thermodynamics studies revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, with an increasing performance when the temperature rose from 10 to 50 degrees C. The material possessed good stability and the adsorption capacity reduced from 7.5 g g(-1) to 6.6 g g(-1) after ten cycles of repeated use, recovered by squeezing and ethanol extraction. Conclusion This work demonstrates that the new hydrophobic nonwoven fabrics have the potential to be used for elimination of pollution from oil wastewater. (c) 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

Of the tested polymers, the aminated hypercrosslinked resins had the highest adsorption capacities. The empirical Freundlich equation was successfully employed to describe the adsorption process. The specific surface area and the micropore structure of the adsorbent together with the tertiary amino group on the matrix affected the adsorption performance towards phenol. Furthermore, these factors also influenced the thermodynamic properties. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the presence of the tertiary amino group on the polymer matrix decreased the adsorption rate and increased the apparent activation energy of the adsorption process.
Efficient adsorption of cationic dyes by a novel honeycomb-like porous hydrogel with ultrahigh mechanical property

Abstract:The optimization of hydrogel structure is crucial for adsorption capacity, mechanical stability, and reusability. Herein, a chitosan and laponite-XLS co-doped poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) hydrogel (CXAA) with honeycomb-like porous structures is synthesized by cooperative cross-linking of 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and laponite-XLS in reticular frameworks of acrylic acid (AAc) and acrylamide (AM). The CXAA exhibits extraordinary mechanical performances including tough tensile strength (3.36 MPa) and elasticity (2756 %), which facilitates recycling in practical adsorption treatment and broadens potential applications. Since the regular porous structures can fully expose numerous adsorption sites and electronegative natures within polymer materials, CXAA displays efficient and selective adsorption properties for cationic dyes like methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) from mixed pollutants and can reach record-high values (MB = 6886 mg g-1, MG = 11,381 mg g-1) compared with previously reported adsorbents. Therefore, CXAA exhibits promising potential for separating cationic and anionic dyes by their charge disparities. Mechanism studies show that the synergistic effects of HACC, laponite-XLS, and functional groups in monomers promote highly efficient adsorption. Besides, the adsorption capacity of CXAA remains stable even after undergoing five cycles of regeneration. The results confirm that CXAA is a promising adsorbent for effectively removing organic dyes in wastewater.

Abstract:Dyes are usual contaminants in aqueous solution. Some of them are carcinogenic and toxic. Hydroxyl-carboxyl bifunctional hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCHCP) carrying hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on their surface were fabricated for methylene blue (MB) adsorption by Friedel-Crafts alkylation, using 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid as a monomer. The maximum adsorption amount of MB was 751.88 mg g(-1) according to the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption kinetics results demonstrated that the adsorption of MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic mode. In addition, the results of selective adsorption displayed that the HCHCP could separate MB from Acid Red 91 and methyl orange. Thus, HCHCP are promising adsorbents for cationic dyes.
