Abstract:The conventional strategies employed for introducing functional groups onto the surfaces of nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) require complicated steps. Herein, we report a simple strategy for the fabrication of negatively-charged polyethersulfone (PES) NFM5 adsorbent by utilizing one-step electrospinning. Firstly, functional groups were introduced into the electrospinning solution via in-situ cross-linking co-polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate and acrylic acid in PES solution. Then, the solution was directly used to electrospin into negatively-charged PES NFM5. Sufficient characterization methods were carried out to demonstrate the successful fabrication of the functional NFM5. Batch adsorption experiments for various kinds of dyes with different initial concentrations and pH values were carried out. The results indicated that the NFM5 showed efficient adsorption capacity for cationic dye of methylene blue MB. In particular, binary dye adsorption column experiments were carried out and the membranes exhibited excellent separation efficiency of 98.29% for MB/amaranth mixture. The successful fabrication of such fascinating NFMs adsorbent by using this simple approach may provide new sights into the design and development of adsorptive materials for industrial wastewater treatment with excellent separation efficiency towards mixed dyes. Abstract:One of the challenges in water pollution control is the design of adsorbents aimed at achieving low cost, ultrafast, and selective adsorption of pollutants. Hypercrosslinked-polymers (HCPs) possess abundant microporous structures and advantages such as the ability to manipulate the framework structure, making them highly valuable in the field of adsorption. Three HCPs namely polythiophene (Th-1), polypyrrole (Py-1), and polyfuran (Fu-1) were synthesized through a Friedel's alkylation reaction utilizing different functional monomers (thiophene, pyrrole, and furan) employing a knitting strategy. The HCPs exhibit a heterocyclic structure (C-S-C, C-N-C, C-O-C) with remarkable charge selectivity as well as strong resistance to acids and alkalis. The HCPs, with varying functional monomers, demonstrate selective adsorption of dyes based on their charges and release of dyes dependent on solvent and pH conditions. The ease of synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and high reusability render these HCPs suitable for further design optimization through the utilization of diverse functional monomers to achieve efficient adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants from water.

Development and characterization of amine-functionalized hyper-cross-linked resin for CO2 capture

Abstract:A hyper-cross-linked resin (PDVBpc) based solid amine adsorbent was synthesized by suspension polymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) and a Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction, followed by impregnation with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), for CO2 capture. The results showed that the specific surface area and pore volume of the initial porous polymer (PDVB) remarkably increased after the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction, which was beneficial for increasing the loading of TEPA and the adsorption of CO2. To determine the CO2 adsorption performance, certain factors, including the TEPA loading, flow rate, CO2 concentration and adsorption temperature, were investigated. The maximum adsorbed amount of CO2 (3.11 mmol g−1) was achieved at 25 °C and a CO2 concentration of 10 vol% when the flow rate was 30 mL min−1 and the TEPA loading was 30 wt%. The optimal TEPA loading could provide sufficient active sites for CO2 capture, whereas excessive loading may lead to aggregation of the adsorbent and blockage of pore channels. An increase in temperature was unfavourable for the adsorption of CO2, because the reaction between amine groups and carbon dioxide was exothermic. A high CO2 concentration would reduce the breakthrough time but would not affect the adsorption capacity for CO2. The experimental data fitted the Avrami model well at different temperatures, which indicated that both physisorption and chemisorption contributed to the adsorption of CO2. Thus, a promising material for the adsorption of CO2 was obtained via the functionalization with TEPA of a hyper-crosslinked resin.

Abstract:Nanofibrous membranes showing selective separation of certain dyes out from multiple organic mixtures are of great importance for many advanced applications. Although various strategies including mixed-matrix-membrane or elaborately designed surface modification have been reported for preparation of these advanced membranes, they are still limited in terms of tedious experimental work and questionable long-term stability. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a range of super-engineering polyarylene ethers containing pendent nucleophilic nitriles and negatively charged sulfonate groups, which have been further processed into nanofibrous membranes (NFM) via the one-step electrospinning technique. Thanks to the presence of high density of surface active binding sites, the electrospun polymeric nanofibers exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 796.25 mg/g for cationic organic dye of methylene blue. More importantly, the optimized polymeric NFM allows rapid selective removal of cationic dyes from their mixtures with other dyes molecules, and the removal efficiency of cationic dyes arrives up to 99% even after eight separation-regeneration cycles. Due to their facile fabrication, highly selective purification feature as well as good recyclability, the protocol revealed in this work would open new way for fabrication of advanced separation membranes for wastewater purification.

Abstract:<p>The separation of harmful substances by supramolecular crosslinking polymers is the focus of current research. As far as it is known, supramolecular crosslinking systems based on electrospun nanofibers are rarely reported. However, electrospun nanofibers should be promising candidates for interfacial crosslinking substrates because of their adjustable morphology and can be doped with different functional nanoparticles. In this study, β‐cyclodextrin and acyl chloride compounds are interfacially polymerized on polyacrylonitrile electrospun nanofibrous substrates with different morphologies. The diameter and orientation of electrospun nanofibrous substrates affect the dye‐filtration efficiency, with a porous membrane composed of aligned nanofibers giving the highest efficiency. Cationic dyes can be selectively filtered from mixtures of cationic and anionic dyes, and the porous supramolecular crosslinking polymers are also suitable for mixtures of various cationic dyes. When TiO<sub>2</sub> is present in the nanofibrous substrate, UV irradiation of the used porous composite membranes efficiently in situ degrade the absorbed dye, making the membranes self‐cleaning and thus reusable.</p>

Abstract:<p>Magnetic separation technology is an efficient and feasible way to achieve rapid recovery of adsorbents, thus, the use of magnetic adsorbents has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, currently reported magnetic adsorbents have limited adsorption capacity due to insufficient adsorption sites and reactive groups. In this work, a novel magnetic chitosan-based amphiphilic adsorbent (PFSC) was synthesized by using UV-light irradiation method to combine with acryloyloxyethyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (AO), a molecule containing benzyl groups. PFSC and its precursors were carefully characterized, and their adsorption performances for the removal of anionic dyes were explored. The characterization results showed that the magnetic copolymers with a type of microsphere structure were successfully synthesized. Moreover, PFSC exhibited superior adsorption efficiency and pH resistance compared to those of an unmodified chitosan-based magnetic adsorbent (FSC). The maximum adsorption capacities of PFSC towards orange II (OG), acid red 88 (AE) and red amaranth (RM) were 955.0, 1075.8 and 567.5 mg/g at pH 3.0, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of PFSC were consistent with that of a pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, adsorption-desorption experiments showed that PFSC could be rapidly separated and efficiently recycled even after 4 uses. More importantly, the FTIR and XPS results revealed that electrostatic adsorption and π-π stacking interactions were the main adsorption mechanisms for the PFSC-enhanced removal of anionic dyes.</p>

Abstract:In the current paper, a novel amphoteric straw-based adsorbent was prepared and applied to adsorb various dyes from aqueous solutions. The amphoteric adsorbent was proven effective in eliminating both cationic and anionic dyes (methylene blue and acid green 25), especially at corresponding favored pH conditions. The fundamental adsorption behavior of the adsorbent on removing various dyes was also investigated at different temperatures. The adsorption isotherms were all best-fitted by the Langmuir equation, whereas the adsorption kinetics was well-described by both the pseudo-second order model and the Elovich model. The experimental result revealed that the adsorption mechanism followed the monolayer chemical adsorption with an ion-exchange process.

To achieve a high CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity, particularly at the low partition pressures required for post-combustion CO2 capture or direct capture of CO2 from the atmosphere, incorporating amines onto the polymer frameworks or within the pores has shown much promise. This review provides a comprehensive summary of recent studies on the synthesis and CO2 capture performance of amine-functionalized POPs. The review also provides a detailed discussion of structure-performance relationships, focusing on how the loading amount and amine type influence CO2 capture capacity, CO2/N-2 selectivity, heat of adsorption, sorption kinetics, and recyclability of POPs. Additionally, the authors offer their perspective on the challenges associated with the practical implementation of amine-modified POPs for CO2 capture.

Abstract:A series of aminated hypercrosslinked polymers (AH-1, AH-2 and AH-3) were prepared on the basis of the conventional chloromethylated low-crosslinked macroporous styrene–divinylbenzene copolymers by controlling the post-crosslinking reaction and surface modification with dimethylamine. Adsorption behaviour of resorcinol and catechol from aqueous solution onto the above aminated hypercrosslinked polymers and the hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent NDA-100 without amino groups was compared. It was found that the aminated hypercrosslinked polymers had higher adsorption capacities than NDA-100 due to the Lewis acid–base interaction between the phenolic compounds and the tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix. Specific surface area and micropore structure of the adsorbent, in company with tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix mutually affect the adsorption performance towards the both phenolic compounds. Additionally, more catechol is adsorbed than resorcinol due to the affinity towards water and position of the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring of the compound. Besides, thermodynamic study was carried out to interpret the adsorption mechanism. Kinetic study testified that the tertiary amino groups on the polymer matrix could decrease the adsorption rate and increase the adsorption apparent activation energy.
Facile Fabrication of Porous Adsorbent with Multiple Amine Groups for Efficient and Selective Removal of Amaranth and Tartrazine Dyes from Water

Abstract:The development of an advanced dye adsorbent that possesses a range of beneficial characteristics, such as high adsorption capacity, swift adsorption kinetics, selective adsorption capability, and robust reusability, remains a challenge. This study introduces a facile method for fabricating an amine-rich porous adsorbent (ARPA), which is specifically engineered for the adsorptive removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solutions. Through a comprehensive assessment, we have evaluated the adsorption performance of ARPA using two benchmark dyes: amaranth (ART) and tartrazine (TTZ). Our findings indicate that the adsorption process reaches equilibrium in a remarkably short timeframe of just 20 min, and it exhibits an excellent correlation with both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, ARPA has demonstrated an exceptional maximum adsorption capacity, with values of 675.68 mg g−1 for ART and 534.76 mg g−1 for TTZ. In addition to its high adsorption capacity, ARPA has also shown remarkable selectivity, as evidenced by its ability to selectively adsorb TTZ from a mixed dye solution, a feature that is highly desirable for practical applications. Beyond its impressive adsorption capabilities, ARPA can be efficiently regenerated and recycled. It maintains a high level of original removal efficiency for both ART (76.8%) and TTZ (78.9%) even after five consecutive cycles of adsorption and desorption. Considering the simplicity of its synthesis and its outstanding adsorption performance, ARPA emerges as a highly promising material for use in dye removal applications. Consequently, this paper presents a straightforward and feasible method for the production of an effective dye adsorbent for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Adsorption is a promising technique for the effective removal of dyes from dyeing wastewater resulting from the paper, textile, and leather industries. Herein, we report a facile strategy for preparing adsorption membrane-based aminated ultrathin polyacrylonitrile (UPAN-N) nanofibers to effectively remove the synthetic dyes from wastewater. The UPAN-N nanofibers were synthesized using a mixed solution electrospinning procedure, followed by triethylenetetramine modification. After the amino modification, the surface of the obtained UPAN-N nanofiber membrane is rich in amino groups, which endows the resulting membrane with an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of more than 1800 mg/g for the organic dye DR23 and a rapid adsorption rate for DR23 solutions with the concentrations ranging from 20 to 100 mg/L. This work not only provides a feasible method for the preparation of high-capacity adsorbents but also offers the possibility of preparing nanofibers by a mixed solution electrospinning procedure.

Efficient adsorption of cationic dyes by a novel honeycomb-like porous hydrogel with ultrahigh mechanical property

Abstract:The optimization of hydrogel structure is crucial for adsorption capacity, mechanical stability, and reusability. Herein, a chitosan and laponite-XLS co-doped poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) hydrogel (CXAA) with honeycomb-like porous structures is synthesized by cooperative cross-linking of 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and laponite-XLS in reticular frameworks of acrylic acid (AAc) and acrylamide (AM). The CXAA exhibits extraordinary mechanical performances including tough tensile strength (3.36 MPa) and elasticity (2756 %), which facilitates recycling in practical adsorption treatment and broadens potential applications. Since the regular porous structures can fully expose numerous adsorption sites and electronegative natures within polymer materials, CXAA displays efficient and selective adsorption properties for cationic dyes like methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) from mixed pollutants and can reach record-high values (MB = 6886 mg g-1, MG = 11,381 mg g-1) compared with previously reported adsorbents. Therefore, CXAA exhibits promising potential for separating cationic and anionic dyes by their charge disparities. Mechanism studies show that the synergistic effects of HACC, laponite-XLS, and functional groups in monomers promote highly efficient adsorption. Besides, the adsorption capacity of CXAA remains stable even after undergoing five cycles of regeneration. The results confirm that CXAA is a promising adsorbent for effectively removing organic dyes in wastewater.
Highly efficient and selective removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solutions using polyacrylamide/peach gum polysaccharide/attapulgite composite hydrogels with positively charged hybrid network

Abstract:To avoid the weakness (lower adsorption rate and selectivity) of peach gum polysaccharide (PGP) and improve the adsorption performance of polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel (lower adsorption capacity), in the present work, the PGP was chemically tailored to afford ammoniated PGP (APGP) and quaternized PGP (QPGP), and attapulgite (ATP) was bi-functionalized with cation groups and carbon‑carbon double bond. Then, PAAm/APGP and PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogels were synthesized via redox polymerization. The synthesis procedure and properties of hydrogels were traced by FTIR, SEM, XPS, TGA, TEM, and BET methods, and the dye adsorption performance of the hydrogels was evaluated using the new coccine (NC) and tartrazine (TTZ) aqueous solutions as the model anionic dyes. Effects of initial dye concentration, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption were investigated. Compared with PAAm/APGP hydrogel, PAAm/APGP/ATP hydrogel exhibits higher adsorption rate, superior adsorption capacity, stability, and selectivity towards anionic dye. The adsorption process of PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogel reached equilibrium in about 20 min and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption capacities towards NC and TTZ of PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogel were calculated as 873.235 and 731.432 mg/g. This hydrogel adsorbent originating from PAAm, PGP, and ATP shows great promise for application in practical water treatment.
Amino-functionalization of lignocellulosic biopolymer to be used as a green and sustainable adsorbent for anionic contaminant removal

Abstract:In this work, natural biopolymer stemming from lignocellulosic peanut hull biomass was used as a green and low-cost adsorbent to eliminate anionic Congo red (CR) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous sample. In order to enhance the removal performance, the lignocellulosic biopolymer was subjected to amino-modification by the graft copolymerization of (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride and N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide. The property of the prepared amino-functionalized biopolymer (AFB) was examined through FTIR, TG, SEM, particle size analysis, zeta potential determination and XPS. The adsorption efficacy of AFB for CR and Cr(VI) was tested at different pH, contact time and initial concentration. The kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamics investigations revealed that the uptakes of CR and Cr(VI) were the combination processes of chemical and physical interactions, and both endothermic in nature. The AFB exhibited good reusability without significant loss in adsorption capacity after five consecutive cycles. Mechanistic analysis indicated that the quaternary ammonium groups in AFB contributed a lot to the binding of anionic compounds through electrostatic attraction. In addition, n-π and hydrogen bonding while reduction and coordination were also responsible for the removal of CR and Cr(VI), respectively. The present study provides a favorable strategy for the removal of anionic contaminates in water by using green and sustainable lignocellulosic wastes.

Insight into highly efficient removal of sulfonic acid pollutants by a series of newly-synthesized resins from aqueous media: Physical & chemical adsorption

Abstract:<div><p>In this study, the adsorption behaviors of a series of systematically designed resins with different physical textures and chemical characteristics were investigated towards sulfonic acid dyes and the adsorption mechanism involving physical and chemical adsorption was elaborately explored. The newly synthesized resins include the hyper-crosslinked resin series which possesses the largest physical adsorption capacity, aminated resin series which has the largest uploading of amino groups and aminated crosslinked resin series which was functionalized with amino groups after the optimization of physical structure. The aminated crosslinked resin AC-2-DETA displayed the best adsorption performance (325.63 mg/g) towards BA and the adsorption capacities increased by 93.0% compared to commercial resin H-103 and the superiority in adsorption is applicable to other dyes with diverse characteristics. Detailed investigation on chemical-physical adsorption interaction based on N<sub>2</sub> adsorption-desorption study revealed the significance of associating chemical modification with structure optimization. The former provided hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interacting sites and the latter regulated porous structure and BET surface area. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were also studied to gain further understanding for the adsorption behaviors.</p><h5>Graphic abstract</h5><p>Three types of resins prepared by crosslinking/amination modification based on CMPS displayed enhanced adsorption capacity towards BA and multiple physical and chemical interacting modes were involved in the process..</p></div>

Abstract:A new adsorbent (AC–BP–V) was synthesized by activated carbon, which was used to remove anionic amaranth from aqueous solutions. The adsorption capability, adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the AC–BP–V were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potential were employed to characterize the adsorbent. Experimental results indicated that AC–BP–V adsorbent exhibited high-selectivity adsorption and efficiency for anionic dyes. Adsorption behavior of the modified activated carbon from aqueous solution was investigated by varying the parameters such as pH, contact time and amaranth concentration, and the optimum adsorption pH was 1. The equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm, and the obtained kinetic data obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 216.92 mg/g. The new adsorbent (AC–BP–V) has obvious selectivity to anionic dyes. The results indicated that electrostatic interaction was the main mechanism for the adsorption of anionic amaranth.

Abstract:Chitosan in situ grown polyamidoamine (CTS-Gx PAMAM (x = 0, 1, 2, 3)) aerogels were fabricated by a facile one-step freeze-drying method, with glutaraldehyde serving as a crosslinker. The three-dimensional skeletal structure of aerogel provided numerous adsorption sites and accelerated the effective mass transfer of pollutants. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies of the two anionic dyes were consistent with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicating that the removal of rose bengal (RB) and sunset yellow (SY) was a monolayer chemisorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of RB and SY reached 370.28 mg/g and 343.31 mg/g, respectively. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacities of the two anionic dyes reached 81.10% and 84.06% of the initial adsorption capacities, respectively. The major mechanism between the aerogels and dyes was systematically investigated based on using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses, confirming that electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions were the main driving forces for the superior adsorption performance. Furthermore, the CTS-G2 PAMAM aerogel exhibited good filtration and separation performance. Overall, the novel aerogel adsorbent possesses excellent theoretical guidance and practical application potential for the purification of anionic dyes.
