Abstract:Let E be an atomic reflexive Banach lattice and X be any Banach lattice with Pelczynski's property (V). We show that (i) the positive injective tensor product E circle times(|epsilon|) X has Pelczynski's property (V); (ii) the positive projective tensor product E (circle times) over cap (|pi|) X has Pelczynski's property (V) if and only if every positive linear operator from E to X* is compact. As an application, we provide new examples of non-reflexive Banach lattices with Pelczynski's property (V).

Abstract:Given Banach spaces E and F, we denote by ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ the space of all k-homogeneous (continuous) polynomials from E into F, and by ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ the subspace of polynomials which are weak-to-norm continuous on bounded sets. It is shown that if E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, the following assertions are equivalent: (a) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$; (b) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$; (c) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $\ell_\infty$; (d) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ is complemented in ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$. This result was obtained by Kalton for linear operators. As an application, we show that if E has Pełczyński's property (V) and satisfies ${\mathcal P}(^k!E) ={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E)$ then, for all F, every unconditionally converging $P\in{\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ is weakly compact. If E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, then the converse is also true.

Abstract:For $1\leq p\leq q\leq\infty$ and a locally convex space $E$, we introduce and study the $(V^\ast)$ subsets of order $(p,q)$ of $E$ and the $(V)$ subsets of order $(p,q)$ of the topological dual $E'$ of $E$. Using these sets we define and study the (sequential) Pełczyński's property $V^\ast$ of order $(p,q)$, the (sequential) Pełczyński's property $V$ of order $(p,q)$, and the Pełczyński's property $(u)$ of order $p$ in the class of all locally convex spaces. To this end, we also introduce and study several new completeness type properties, weak barrelledness conditions, Schur type properties, the Gantmacher property for locally convex spaces, and $(q,p)$-summing operators between locally convex spaces. Applications to some classical function spaces are given.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a separable Banach space and $\Omega$ be a compact Hausdorff space. It is shown that the space $C(\Omega,E)$ has property (V) if and only if $E$ does. Similar result is also given for Bochner spaces $L^p(\mu,E)$ if $1<p<\infty$ and $\mu$ is a finite Borel measure on $\Omega$.

Abstract:Let ℒ^r(E,X) denote the space of regular linear operators from a Banach lattice E to a Banach lattice X . In this paper, we show that if E is a separable atomic Banach lattice, then ℒ^r(E, X) is reflexive if and only if both E and X are reflexive and each positive linear operator from E to X is compact; moreover, if E is a separable atomic Banach lattice such that E and E * are order continuous, then ℒ^r(E, X) has the Radon–Nikodym property (respectively, is a KB-space) if and only if X has the Radon–Nikodym property (respectively, is a KB-space) and each positive linear operator from E to X is compact.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.
On the property (C) of Corson and other sequential properties of Banach Spaces

Abstract:A well-known result of R. Pol states that a Banach space $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson if and only if every point in the weak*-closure of any convex set $C \subseteq B_{X^*}$ is actually in the weak*-closure of a countable subset of $C$. Nevertheless, it is an open problem whether this is in turn equivalent to the countable tightness of $B_{X^*}$ with respect to the weak*-topology. Frankiewicz, Plebanek and Ryll-Nardzewski provided an affirmative answer under $\mathrm{MA}+\neg \mathrm{CH}$ for the class of $\mathcal{C}(K)$-spaces. In this article we provide a partial extension of this latter result by showing that under the Proper Forcing Axiom ($\mathrm{PFA}$) the following conditions are equivalent for an arbitrary Banach space $X$: 1) $X$ has property $\mathcal{E}'$; 2) $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball; 3) $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson; 4) $(B_{X^*},w^\ast)$ has countable tightness. This provides a partial extension of a former result of Arhangel'skii. In addition, we show that every Banach space with property $\mathcal{E}'$ has weak*-convex block compact dual ball.

Abstract:We introduce the concepts of Pelczyn'ski's property (V*) of order p and Pelczyn'ski's property (V*) of order p. It is proved that, for each 1 < p < infinity, the James p-spaces J(p) enjoys Pelczyn'ski's property (V*) of order p and the James p*-spaces J(p)* (where p? denotes the conjugate number of p) enjoys Pelczyn'ski's property (V) of order p. We prove that both L-1(mu) (mu a finite positive measure) and l(1) enjoy a quantitative version of Pelczyn'ski's property (V*).

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper we use the norm of bounded variation to study multilinear operators and polynomials on Banach lattices. As a result, we obtain when all continuous multilinear operators and polynomials on Banach lattices are regular. We also provide new abstract M- and abstract L-spaces of multilinear operators and polynomials and generalize all the results by Grecu and Ryan, from Banach lattices with an unconditional basis to all Banach lattices.

Abstract:We show several characterizations of weakly compact sets in Banach spaces. Given a bounded closed convex set C of a Banach space X, the following statements are equivalent: (i) C is weakly compact; (ii) C can be affinely uniformly embedded into a reflexive Banach space; (iii) there exists an equivalent norm on X which has the w2R-property on C; (iv) there is a continuous and w*-lower semicontinuous seminorm p on the dual X* with p >= sup(C) such that p(2) is everywhere Frechet differentiable in X*; and as a consequence, the space X is a weakly compactly generated space if and only if there exists a continuous and w*-l.s.c. Frechet smooth (not necessarily equivalent) norm on X*.

Abstract:We prove that if Banach lattices E and F are reflexive and each positive linear operator from E to F is compact then L-r( E; F), the space of all regular linear operators from E to F, is reflexive. Conversely, if E* or F has the bounded regular approximation property then the reflexivity of L-r( E; F) implies that each positive linear operator from E to F is compact. Analogously we also study the reflexivity for the space of regular multilinear operators on Banach lattices.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach space and let $C$ be a closed convex bounded subset of $X$. It is proved that $C$ is weakly compact if, and only if, $C$ has the {it generic} fixed point property ($\mathcal{G}$-FPP) for the class of $L$-bi-Lipschitz affine mappings for every $L>1$. It is also proved that if $X$ has Pełczyński's property $(u)$, then either $C$ is weakly compact, contains an $\ell_1$-sequence or a $\mathrm{c}_0$-summing basic sequence. In this case, weak compactness of $C$ is equivalent to the $\mathcal{G}$-FPP for the strengthened class of affine mappings that are uniformly bi-Lipschitz. We also introduce a generalized form of property $(u)$, called {it property $(\mathfrak{su})$}, and use it to prove that if $X$ has property $(\mathfrak{su})$ then either $C$ is weakly compact or contains a wide-$(s)$ sequence which is uniformly shift equivalent. In this case, weak compactness in such spaces can also be characterized in terms of the $\mathcal{G}$-FPP for affine uniformly bi-Lipschitz mappings. It is also proved that every Banach space with a spreading basis has property $(\mathfrak{su})$, thus property $(\mathfrak{su})$ is stronger than property $(u)$. These results yield a significant strengthening of an important theorem of Benavides, Japón-Pineda and Prus published in 2004.
