Abstract:A Banach space E is said to have Property (w) if every (bounded linear) operator from E into E' is weakly compact. We give some interesting examples of James type Banach spaces with Property (w). We also consider the passing of Property (w) from E to C(K,E).

Abstract:Let (X, tau(1)) and (Y, tau(2)) be two Hausdorff locally convex spaces with continuous duals X, and Y', respectively, L (X, Y) be the space of all continuous linear operators from X into Y, K (X, Y) be the space of all compact operators of L (X, Y). Let WOT and UOT be the weak operator topology and uniform operator topology on K (X, Y), respectively. In this paper, we characterize a full-invariant property of K (X, Y); that is, if the sequence space X has the signed-weak gliding hump property, then each; lambda-multiplier WOT-convergent series Sigma(i) T-i in K(X, Y) must be X-multiplier convergent with respect to all topologies between WOT and UOT if and only if each continuous linear operator T: (X, tau(1)) --> or (lambda(beta), sigma(lambda(beta),lambda)) is compact. Abstract:Given Banach spaces E and F, we denote by ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ the space of all k-homogeneous (continuous) polynomials from E into F, and by ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ the subspace of polynomials which are weak-to-norm continuous on bounded sets. It is shown that if E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, the following assertions are equivalent: (a) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$; (b) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$; (c) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $\ell_\infty$; (d) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ is complemented in ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$. This result was obtained by Kalton for linear operators. As an application, we show that if E has Pełczyński's property (V) and satisfies ${\mathcal P}(^k!E) ={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E)$ then, for all F, every unconditionally converging $P\in{\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ is weakly compact. If E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, then the converse is also true.

Abstract:A well-known result of R. Pol states that a Banach space $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson if and only if every point in the weak*-closure of any convex set $C \subseteq B_{X^*}$ is actually in the weak*-closure of a countable subset of $C$. Nevertheless, it is an open problem whether this is in turn equivalent to the countable tightness of $B_{X^*}$ with respect to the weak*-topology. Frankiewicz, Plebanek and Ryll-Nardzewski provided an affirmative answer under $\mathrm{MA}+\neg \mathrm{CH}$ for the class of $\mathcal{C}(K)$-spaces. In this article we provide a partial extension of this latter result by showing that under the Proper Forcing Axiom ($\mathrm{PFA}$) the following conditions are equivalent for an arbitrary Banach space $X$: 1) $X$ has property $\mathcal{E}'$; 2) $X$ has weak*-sequential dual ball; 3) $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson; 4) $(B_{X^*},w^\ast)$ has countable tightness. This provides a partial extension of a former result of Arhangel'skii. In addition, we show that every Banach space with property $\mathcal{E}'$ has weak*-convex block compact dual ball.

Abstract:A Banach space is said to have the Lebesgue property if every Riemann-integrable function $f:[0,1]\to X$ is Lebesgue almost everywhere continuous. We give a characterization of the Lebesgue property in terms of a new sequential asymptotic structure that is strictly between the notions of spreading and asymptotic models. We also reproduce an apparently lost theorem of Pelczynski and da Rocha Filho that a subspace $X\subset L_{1}[0,1]$ has the Lebesgue property if every spreading model of $X$ is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_{1}$.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a separable Banach space and $\Omega$ be a compact Hausdorff space. It is shown that the space $C(\Omega,E)$ has property (V) if and only if $E$ does. Similar result is also given for Bochner spaces $L^p(\mu,E)$ if $1<p<\infty$ and $\mu$ is a finite Borel measure on $\Omega$.

Abstract:The Banach-Saks property is an important tool in analysis with applications ranging from partial differential equations (PDEs) to calculus of variations and probability theory. We survey the Banach-Saks property for $L^p$-spaces, with a particular emphasis on the case where $p=1$. In other words, we revisit the celebrated result by W. Szlenk (1965) in a more general context, demonstrating that $L^1$-spaces possess the weak Banach-Saks property.

Abstract:It is shown that if the dual of a Banach space, $X^*$, where the dual ball is weak* sequentially compact, has the weak* uniform Kadec-Klee property then $X^*$ has Property($K^*$). An example is given where the reverse implication does not hold. That is, there is a Banach space $X$ whose dual, $X^*$, has Property($K^*$) but $X^*$ does not have the weak* uniform Kadec-Klee property.

Abstract:We define and study the notion of property $(\rm T)$ for Banach algebras, generalizing the one from $C^*$-algebras. For a second countable locally compact group $G$ and a given family of Banach spaces $\mathcal E$, we prove that our Banach algebraic property $(\rm{T}_{\mathcal E})$ of the symmetrized pseudofunction algebras $F^*_{\mathcal E}(G)$ characterizes the Banach property $(\rm{T}_{\mathcal E})$ of Bader, Furman, Gelander and Monod for groups. In case $G$ is a discrete group and $\mathcal E$ is the class of $L^p$-spaces for $1\leq p < \infty$, we also achieve the analogue characterization using the symmetrized $p$-pseudofunction algebras $F^*_{\lambda_ p}(G)$.

Abstract:In this paper, for a bounded linear operator defined on a complex Banach space of infinite dimension, we consider the set of isolated points in its approximate point spectrum, which are eigenvalues of finite multiplicity; this set can be equal to the spectrum of the operator but without its upper semi-Fredholm spectrum, and this relation or equality defines in the literature a new spectral property called the property $ (\omega{ \pi }) $ and is a generalization of the classical a-Weyl theorem. We establish some characterizations and consequences about the property $ (\omega{ \pi }) $, some with topological aspects. Furthermore, we study this property through the Riesz functional calculus. Part of the spectral structure of a linear operator verifying property $ (\omega{ \pi }) $ is described, obtaining some associated properties.

Abstract:A topological space $Y$ has the property (B) of Banakh if there is a countable family $\{A_n:n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ of closed nowhere dense subsets of $Y$ absorbing all compact subsets of $Y$. In this note we show that the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ with the topology of pointwise convergence, fails to satisfy the property (B) if and only if the space $X$ has the following property $(\kappa)$: every sequence of disjoint finite subsets of $X$ has a subsequence with point--finite open expansion. Additionally, we provide an analogous characterization for the compact--open topology on $C(X)$. Finally, we give examples of Tychonoff spaces $X$ whose all bounded subsets are finite, yet $X$ fails to have the property $(\kappa)$. This answers a question of Tkachuk.

On Hahn-Banach smoothness and related properties in Banach spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we study several variants of Hahn-Banach smoothness, viz., property-$(SU)$/$(HB)$/$(wU)$, where property-$(SU)$ and property-$(HB)$ are stronger notions and property-$(wU)$ is a weaker notion of Hahn-Banach smoothness. We characterize property-$(wU)$ and property-$(HB)$. It is observed that $L_1(\mu)$ has property-$(wU)$ in $L_1(\mu,(\mathbb{R}^2,\|.\|_2))$ but it does not have property-$(U)$ in $L_1(\mu,(\mathbb{R}^2,\|.\|_2))$ for a non-atomic measure $\mu$. We derive a sufficient condition when property-$(wU)$ is equivalent to property-$(U)$ of a subspace. It is observed that these properties are separably determined. Finally, finite-dimensional and finite co-dimensional subspaces of $c_0$, $\ell_p$ ($1\leq p<\infty$) having these properties are characterized.

Abstract:We characterize the properties $(z)$ and $(az)$ for an operator $T$ whose dual $T^*$ has the SVEP on the complementary of the upper semi-Weyl spectrum of $T.$ If $S$ and $T$ are Banach space operators satisfying property $(z)$ or $(az),$ we give conditions on $S$ and $T$ to ensure the preservation of these properties by the direct sum $S\oplus T.$ Some results are given for multipliers and in general for $(H)$-operators. Also we give a correct proof of \cite[Theorem 2.3]{SZ} which was proved by using the equality $\sigma_p^0(S\oplus T)= \sigma_p^0(S)\cup \sigma_p^0(T).$ However this equality is not true; we give counterexamples to show that.

Abstract:An operator $T\in B(H)$ is said to satisfy property ($UW${\scriptsize \it{E}}) if the complement in the approximate point spectrum of the essential approximate point spectrum coincides with the isolated eigenvalues of the spectrum. Via the CI spectrum induced by consistent invertibility property of operators, we explore property ($UW${\scriptsize \it{E}}) for $T$ and $T^\ast$ simultaneously. Furthermore, the transfer of property ($UW${\scriptsize \it{E}}) from $T$ to $f(T)$ and $f(T^{\ast})$ is obtained, where $f$ is a function which is analytic in a neighborhood of the spectrum of $T$. At last, with the help of the so-called $(A,B)$ entanglement stable spectra, the entanglement stability of property ($UW${\scriptsize \it{E}}) for $2\times 2$ upper triangular operator matrices is investigated.

Abstract:We characterize the weak-type boundedness of the Hilbert transform $H$ on weighted Lorentz spaces $\Lambda^p_u(w)$, with $p>0$, in terms of some geometric conditions on the weights $u$ and $w$ and the weak-type boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on the same spaces. Our results recover simultaneously the theory of the boundedness of $H$ on weighted Lebesgue spaces $L^p(u)$ and Muckenhoupt weights $A_p$, and the theory on classical Lorentz spaces $\Lambda^p(w)$ and Ariño Muckenhoupt weights $B_p$.

Numerical Functional Analysis and Optimization

Abstract:We introduce two notions called k -weakly uniform rotundity ( k -WUR) and k -weakly locally uniform rotundity ( k -WLUR) in real Banach spaces. These are natural generalizations of the well-known concepts k -UR and WUR. By introducing two best approximation notions namely k -weakly strong Chebyshevity and k -weakly uniform strong Chebyshevity, we generalize some of the existing results to k -WUR and k -WLUR spaces. In particular, we present characterizations of k -WUR spaces in terms of k -weakly uniformly strong Chebyshevness. Also, the inheritance of the notions k -WUR and k -WLUR by quotient spaces are discussed. Further, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for an infinite lp -product space to be k -WUR (respectively, k -WLUR). As a consequence, we observe that the notions WUR and k -WUR coincide for an infinite lp -product of a Banach space.
