Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals were synthesized by epitaxial growth of 1-6 monolayers of CdS shell onto presynthesized zinc-blende CdSe core nanocrystals in one pot. To retain the zinc-blende structure, the reaction temperature was lowered to the 100-140 degrees C range by using cadmium diethyldithiocarbamate as a single-source precursor and primary amine as activation reagents for the precursor. Although the wurtzite counterparts grown under the same conditions showed optical properties similar to those reported in the literature, zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals demonstrated surprisingly different optical properties, with ensemble single-exponential photoluminescence decay, significant decrease of photoluminescence peak width by the shell growth, and comparatively high photoluminescence quantum yields. The lifetime for the single-exponential ensemble photoluminescence decay of zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with 3-4 monolayers of CdS shell was reproducibly found to be approximately 16.5 +/- 1.0 ns.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:A variety of nearly monodisperse semiconductor nanocrystals, such as US, ZnS, and ZnS:Mn, with controllable aspect ratios have been successfully prepared through a facile synthetic process. These as-prepared nanocrystals were obtained from the reactions between metal ions and thioacetamide by employing octadecylamine or oleylamine as the surfactants. The effects of reaction temperature and time, ratios of thioacetamide to inorganic precursors, and the reactant content on the size and crystal purity of the nanorods, have been systematically investigated. The optical properties and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been discussed. For the next biolabel applications, these hydrophobic nanocrystals have also been transferred into hydrophilic colloidal spheres by means of an emulsion-based bottom-up self-assembly approach.

Abstract:We report on a controlled synthesis of two novel semiconducting heterostructures: heterocrystalline-ZnS/single-crystalline-ZnO biaxial nanobelts and side-to-side single-crystalline ZnS/ZnO biaxial nanobelts via a simple one-step thermal evaporation method. In the first heterostructure, a ZnS domain is composed of the heterocrystalline superlattice (3C-ZnS) N /(2H-ZnS) M [111]-[0001] with the atomically smooth interface between wurtzite and zinc blende ZnS fragments. High-spatial resolution cathodoluminescence studies on individual heterostructures for the first time reveal a new ultraviolet emission peak ( approximately 355 nm), which is not observed in separate ZnS or ZnO nanostructures. The present hererostructures are expected to become valuable not only with respect to fundamental research but also for a design of new broad-range ultraviolet nanoscale lasers and sensors.

Abstract:Conventional single-component quantum dots (QDs) suffer from low recombination rates of photogenerated electrons and holes, which hinders their ability to meet the requirements for LED and laser applications. Therefore, it is urgent to design multicomponent heterojunction nanocrystals with these properties. Herein, we used CdSe quantum dot nanocrystals as a typical model, which were synthesized by means of a colloidal chemistry method at high temperatures. Then, CdS with a wide band gap was used to encapsulate the CdSe QDs, forming a CdSe@CdS core@shell heterojunction. Finally, the CdSe@CdS core@shell was modified through the growth of the ZnS shell to obtain CdSe@CdS@ZnS heterojunction nanocrystal hybrids. The morphologies, phases, structures and performance characteristics of CdSe@CdS@ZnS were evaluated using various analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved transient photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results show that the energy band structure is transformed from type II to type I after the ZnS growth. The photoluminescence lifetime increases from 41.4 ns to 88.8 ns and the photoluminescence quantum efficiency reaches 17.05% compared with that of pristine CdSe QDs. This paper provides a fundamental study and a new route for studying light-emitting devices and biological imaging based on multicomponent QDs.

Abstract:Two ZnO nanostructures with multisegment structure have been synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method on a silicon substrate. The top size of the nanostructures can reduce to 10-30 nm, which is beneficial to field emission applications. Scanning and transmission electron microscope methods are applied to analyze the morphology and microstructure of the nanostructures. Cathodoluminescence study shows that the ZnO nanostructures have core-shell luminescent structure that will affect significantly the mechanical and electrical properties of the ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:Multinary quantum dots (QDs), owing to the large degree of freedom in their structure and composition, have a wide tunability in their bandgap and show an increased indeterminacy and complexity in their optical properties. In this work, a facile microwave-assisted aqueous route using sodium citrate and thioglycolic acid (TGA) as dual stabilizer was utilized to synthesize Cu-In-S/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) core/shell QDs. The effects of the shell thickness, refluxing time, pH value, temperature, Cu/In ratio and stabilizer on the morphology and optical properties of the CIS/ZnS QDs have been systematically investigated. The results show that the morphology-controllable alloyed CIS/ZnS QDs with tunable emission from 533 nm to 666 nm and long PL lifetime can be obtained by varying the molar ratio of sodium citrate to TGA. The proposed microwave-assisted aqueous synthesis method for alloyed QDs is simple, rapid, with comparatively low reaction temperature. The as-prepared QDs with the size of 3.8 nm are promising materials for lighting and biological applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Novel core–shell nanostructures comprised of cubic sphalerite and hexagonal wurtzite ZnS have been synthesized at 150°C by a simple hydrothermal method. The results of HR-TEM and SAED investigation reveal that the cores of hexagonal wurtzite ZnS (ca. 200 nm in average diameter) are encapsulated by a shell of cubic sphalerite ZnS. The FE-SEM image of the nanomaterials shows a surface tightly packed with nanoparticles (<10 nm in size). The optical properties of the fabricated material have been studied in terms of ultraviolet–visible absorption and photoluminescence. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the fabrication of the core–shell nanostructures has been presented.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1-D) hierarchical heterostructures have attracted much attention due to potential applications in nanoscale building blocks for future optoelectronics devices and systems. In the present article, ZnO/ZnS heterostructures have been synthesized by a controlled vapor deposition method in which all precursors are mixed together in the reaction chamber. The temperature, as well as the flow rate of the inert carrier Ar gas, plays an important role in defining the morphology of the heterostructures. The morphology and structure of as grown heterostructures have been characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The microscopic results reveal that the products consist of heterostructures with a verity of morphology. The structural analysis shows that the brushlike heterostructures are composed of side-by-side and up and down interfaces between two materials. In addition, the photoluminescence spectra of the heterostructures exhibit a strong blue-shift similar to 63 nm and an increase intensity of green emission which give them potential for optoelectronics devices. Furthermore, a brief growth mechanism has also been proposed.

Abstract:Spatially and spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) is one of the most effective methods to explore the optical properties of a nanomaterials and reveals the spatial distribution as well as the correlation between the luminescence and the sample morphology and microstructure. Here, CL modulation of ZnS nanostructures by controlled morphologies, Fe/Mn doping, and measurement temperature is demonstrated. High quality ZnS nanobelts and nanorods are synthesized on an Au-coated Si substrate and an Au-coated GaAs substrate via a facile thermal evaporation route. A room-temperature sharp ultraviolet (UV) lasing-like peak in various ZnS is achieved. The main UV luminescence peaks appear at wavelengths between 330 and 338 nm. The low temperature (32 K) CL spectrum consists of a narrow and strong UV peak centered at 330 nm and two broad, low-intensity peaks in the visible region (514 and 610 nm). Temperature-dependent CL from such single-crystalline ZnS nanobelts in the temperature range of 32 to 296 K reveals two UV peaks at 3.757 and 3.646 eV. The effects of Fe doping and Fe/Mn co-doping on the CL property of ZnS nanobelts are further investigated. These results imply that ZnS nanostructures can be used for potential luminescent materials as well as short-wavelength nanolaser light sources.

Abstract:The monodisperse ZnS nanospheres, with an average diameter of 100 nm, were synthesized through a solvothermal method. Strong photoluminescence emission from blue to green and orange can be observed by doping these ZnS nanospheres with various cations (Mn2+, Cu2+, Al3+). An investigation is reported on the coating of ZnS nanospheres by a thin shell of SiO2 or TiO2 using a sol-get process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the characterization of the coated ZnS nanospheres. The photoluminescence properties demonstrated that not only the brightness of the coated nanospheres has been enhanced but also the thermal stability has been improved greatly.

Abstract:Using phosphine-free and "green" chalcogen precursors, controlled synthesis of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 nanocrystals has been successfully carried out using different sized CdS nanocrystals as cores. The properties and structures of the synthesized nanocrystals were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). By changing CdS core sizes and/or ZnSe shell thicknesses, the PL range of CdS/ZnSe core/shell nanocrystals could be adjusted from 500 nm to 630 nm with type-II optical characteristics. The PL quantum yields (QYs) of these nanocrystals were 50-60% after the growth of thick ZnS shells, their full width at half maximum (FWHM) was kept below 50 nm during the entire growth process, and the total Cd content was reduced to about 1% in atomic ratio. TEM images showed narrow size distributions and XRD results demonstrated the zinc blende structure of CdS was retained following subsequent growth of ZnSe and ZnS shells. More than 2 g of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals were successfully prepared in a large scale synthesis with the use of only low-cost, green, and environmentally friendly reagents.
Origin of luminescence from ZnO/CdS core/shell nanowire arrays

Abstract:Chemical imaging, electronic structure and optical properties of ZnO/CdS nano-composites have been investigated using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) spectroscopy. STXM and XANES results confirm that the as-prepared product is ZnO/CdS core/shell nanowires (NWs), and further indicate that ZnS was formed on the surface of ZnO NWs as the interface between ZnO and CdS. The XEOL from ZnO/CdS NW arrays exhibits one weak ultraviolet (UV) emission at 375 nm, one strong green emission at 512 nm, and two broad infrared (IR) emissions at 750 and 900 nm. Combining XANES and XEOL, it is concluded that the UV luminescence is the near band gap emission (BGE) of ZnO; the green luminescence comes from both the BGE of CdS and defect emission (DE, zinc vacancies) of ZnO; the IR luminescence is attributed to the DE (bulk defect related to the S site) of CdS; ZnS contributes little to the luminescence of the ZnO/CdS NW arrays. Interestingly, the BGE and DE from oxygen vacancies of ZnO in the ZnO/CdS nano-composites are almost entirely quenched, while DE from zinc vacancies changes little.
Surface Modification and Enhancement of Luminescence Due to Quantum Effects in Coated Cdse/Cuse Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Abstract:We report a new and low cost method to synthesize colloidal CdSe and coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. The results of structural characterization and optical measurements indicated that the good size control had been achieved. The photoluminescence study confirmed the surface passivation of CdSe core with CuSe outlayer and revealed strong enhancement of band-edge luminescence due to the quantum confinement in coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals.

Abstract:Cu-, Eu-, or Mn-doped ZnS nanocrystalline phosphors were prepared at room temperature using a chemical synthesis method. Transmission electron microscopy observation shows that the size of the ZnS clusters is in the 3–18 nm range. New luminescence characteristics such as strong and stable visible-light emissions with different colors were observed from the doped ZnS nanocrystals at room temperature. These results strongly suggest that impurities, especially transition metals and rare-earth metals-activated ZnS nanoclusters form a new class of luminescent materials.

Abstract:Mn2+ doped ZnS nanoparticle (NP) clusters composed of densely packed ZnS:Mn2+ NPs, ZnS/ZnS:Mn2+ core/shell NPs, or ZnS:Mn2+/ZnS core/shell NPs were prepared by a chemical co-precipitation method. Estimation of the lattice parameters and the band gap of the ZnS NP clusters through X-ray diffraction and optical diffuse reflectance spectra showed no noticeable divergence due to Mn2+ dopants. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that ZnS:Mn2+/ZnS NP clusters contained much larger NP crystallites associated with the high growth rate of undoped ZnS shell layers. In contrast, Mn2+ dopants limited the deposition of ZnS:Mn2+ shell layers, leading to smaller particle sizes of ZnS:Mn2+ and ZnS/ZnS:Mn2+ NPs in the clusters. Among all the samples, ZnS/ZnS:Mn2+ NP clusters exhibited the most intense orange emission of Mn2+, which was further confirmed by the estimated energy transfer (from ZnS to Mn2+) efficiency values, i.e., ZnS/ZnS:Mn2+ (42.1%) > ZnS:Mn2+/ZnS (15.9%) > ZnS:Mn2+ (1%). An energy migration mechanism was proposed for interpreting the high energy transfer efficiency of the ZnS/ZnS:Mn2+ structure. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
