Abstract:ZnO nanowires were successfully fabricated by using the hydrothermal method in the existence of the poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with the molecular weight of 200. The experimental results exhibit that the ZnO nanowires with the diameter of ~30nm and the length of ten micrometers. PL spectra show a weak ultraviolet emission and an intense broad visible emission band for as-grown and annealed samples. These visible emission bands exhibit red-shifts from green (545nm) to yellow (580nm) and blue-shifts from yellow (580nm) to green (520nm) by annealing at aerobic or anaerobic environment, it indicates that the defect types are changed by annealed at different environment. Additionally, the red-shifts (520nm) and blue-shifts (580) can match up the bimodal lorentzian fitting (520nm and 583nm) of as-growth, which suggest that the visible emission band (545nm) is closely related to oxygen defects. The oxygen atomic can enter into the crystal lattice of ZnO and decrease the oxygen vacancy in air or oxygen, whereas, more oxygen vacancy defects is gave rise in vacuum annealed. We guess the energy levels of the intrinsic defects in ZnO nanowire maybe like that: the electrons of Zni defects compound with holes of VZn, Oi and OZn levels and conform to the yellow emission, and the green emission corresponds to the electron transition from the association defects deep donor level to the valence band.

Abstract:The cathodoluminescence (CL) properties including intensity and distribution of the band to band and defect emission of the flower-like ZnO, ZnO/ZnS core–shell and tube-like ZnS nanostructures have been investigated. It is indicated that the Ultraviolet (UV) emission at 380nm of the flower-like ZnO nanostructures due to the band to band emission is weaker than their yellow emission at 600nm induced by interstitial oxygen. Moreover, the UV emission of the ZnO nanorods unevenly distributes from the tip to the end. The UV emission on the tip is stronger than that of others due to the waveguide. On the contrary, the yellow emission at 600nm is uniform. Furthermore, the UV emission of ZnO has been greatly enhanced and the yellow emission has been inhibited by the formation of ZnO/ZnS core–shell nanostructures in the sulfuration process due to the elimination of interstitial oxygen. However, the polycrystalline tube-like ZnS nanostructures shows the uniform and weak defect emission due to S vacancies.

Abstract:This manuscript presents the preparation and characterization of ZnO/ZnS nanostructured materials through sulfuration conversion from ZnO nanorods by a simple chemical synthesis. ZnO nanorods are synthesized by SDS-assisted hydrothermal growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques are used to characterize the ZnO nanorods and the novel ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites. The results show that the ZnO nanorods are wurtzite crystal structure and the ZnS nanoparticles are sphalerite structure with the average size of about 10nm grown on the surface of the ZnO nanorods. The measurements of the optical properties reveal that ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites have integrated the photoluminescent effect of ZnO and ZnS. Comparing to the bare ZnO nanorods with the ultraviolet, blue and green emissions of the ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites are dramatically enhanced, while the orange emission is passivated. In addition, the growth mechanism of ZnO/ZnS nanocomposites is discussed preliminarily.

Abstract:Without the use of a metal catalyst in the process, ZnO with nanostructures was successfully prepared on Si (100) substrate by simple chemical vapor-deposition method. In our work, Ar was used as the plasma forming gas, O2 was the reactive gas and metal zinc powder (99.99% purity) vaporized by cylinder hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) acted as the zinc source. The crystal structures of the as-synthesized ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD); the ZnO sample growing on the wall of the crucible showed a ‘comb-like’ nanostructure, while the other one at the bottom of the crucible showed a ‘rod-like’ structure, which can be attributed to the difference of the oxygen content. The measurement on the photoluminescence (PL) performance of the ZnO nanostructures was carried out at room temperature. The results indicated that the ‘comb-shape’ ZnO nanomaterial possessed a remarkably strong ultraviolet emission peak centered at 388 nm, while ZnO nanorods, except better ultraviolet emission, also had relatively strong blue-green emission ranging from 470 to 600 nm due to the existence of oxygen vacancies. The growth mechanism of ZnO with nanostructures is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:High-quality nanostructured ZnxCd1-xS has been synthesized through a method of two-step thermal evaporation. The typical morphologies of the nanomaterials were investigated by SEM and TEM. The first step of synthesis is the preparation of ZnS nanoribbons. With ZnS nanoribbons being used as templates, a series of wurtzite ZnxCd1-xS (x = 0.47, 0.70, 0.77, 0.85, and 0.94) nanobelts can be produced. Furthermore, by adopting ZnS nanoribbons of a particular width, ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts of a desired width can be fabricated. In XRD analysis, we find that with an increase in Zn content (x), the peaks corresponding to the wurtzite structures shift to larger 2 theta. As a deduction based on Vegard's law, the ZnxCd1-xS are solid solutions of similar crystal structure. The results of H RTEM and SAED investigations reveal that the ZnS nanoribbons and ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts grow along the (10 (1) over bar0) direction. With an increase in Zn content, we observe a gradual blue shift of photoluminescence emission (from 443 to 352 nm), further indicating the homogeneity of the ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. After proper thermal annealing, there is better crystallinity of ZnxCd1-xS and higher specificity of near-band emission.
Photoluminescence enhancement of ZnO nanowire arrays by atomic layer deposition of ZrO2 layers and thermal annealing.

Abstract:The effects of shell thickness and rapid thermal annealing on photoluminescence properties of one-dimensional ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell nanowires (NWs) are studied in this work. The ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell structures were synthesized by coating thin ZrO2 layers on the surface of ZnO NWs using atomic layer deposition. The morphological and structural characterization studies reveal that the ZrO2 shells have a polycrystalline structure, which are uniformly and conformally coated on the high quality single-crystal ZnO NWs. As compared with bare ZnO NWs, the ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell structures show a remarkable and continuous enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) emission in intensity with increasing ZrO2 shell thickness up to 10 nm. The great improvement mechanism of the UV emission arises from the surface passivation and the efficient carrier confinement effect of the type-I core/shell system. Moreover, it is observed that the UV emission of ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell structures after thermal annealing increases with increasing annealing temperature. The dominant surface exciton (SX) emission in the bare ZnO NWs and the ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell nanostructures has been detected in the low temperature photoluminescence spectra. A blue shift of the NBE emission peak as well as the varied decay rate of the SX emission intensity are also found in the ZnO NWs after the growth of ZrO2 shells and further thermal treatment. Our results suggest that the ZnO/ZrO2 core/shell nanostructures could be widely implemented in the optical and electronic devices in the future.

Abstract:Cr3+-doped zinc gallate (CZGO) is one of the representative persistent luminescent phosphors emitting in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The emission wavelength it covers falls in the tissue-transparent window, making CZGO a promising optical probe for various biomedical applications. However, the PersL mechanism dictates that such a phenomenon is only profound in large crystals. Synthesizing CZGO with sizes small enough for biological applications while maintaining its luminescence remains a challenging task. Recent attempts to use mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) as a template for growing nanosized CZGO have been successful. MSN is also a well-studied drug carrier, and incorporating CZGO in MSN further expands its potential in imaging-guided therapeutics. Despite the interest, it is unclear of how the addition of MSN would affect the luminescence properties of CZGO. In this work, we observed that forming a CZGO@MSN nanocomposite could enhance the luminescence intensity and extend the PersL lifetime of CZGO. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis was conducted to investigate the local structure of Zn2+, and an interaction between Zn2+ in CZGO and the MSN matrix was identified.

Abstract:Aligned ZnO/ZnSe core/shell nanorods (NRs) with type-II energy band alignment were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition of ZnSe on the surfaces of hydrothermally grown ZnO NRs. The obtained ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs are composed of wurtzite ZnO cores and zinc blende ZnSe shells. The bare ZnO NRs are capable of emitting strong ultraviolet (UV) near band edge (NBE) emission at 325-nm light excitation, while the ZnSe shells greatly suppress the emission from the ZnO cores. High-temperature processing results in an improvement in the structures of the ZnO cores and the ZnSe shells and significant changes in the optical properties of ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs. The fabricated ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRs show optical properties corresponding to the two excitonic band gaps of wurtzite ZnO and zinc blende ZnSe and the effective band gap between the conduction band minimum of ZnO and the valence band maximum ZnSe. An extended photoresponse much wider than those of the constituting ZnO and ZnSe and a multi-band photoluminescence including the UV NBE emission of ZnO and the blue NBE emission of ZnSe are observed.

Abstract:ZnS nanobelts with a pure wurtzite phase have been synthesized by a thermal evaporation method with the assistance of H2S in an Ar atmosphere. Photoluminescence band centered at about 535nm has been observed under excitation in the range of 250–480nm with decay rate as short as 860ps. The origin of this intense photoluminescence is related to elemental sulfur species on the surface of the ZnS nanobelts. This assignment is substantiated by structural analysis by high-resolution electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence and excitation technique. ZnS nanobelts with intense surface photoluminescence could be used as effective green light emitters, humid sensors, and UV light detectors.
Enhanced ultraviolet emission from ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires fabricated by self-assembling method

Abstract:A simple chemical route for ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires with preferential (002) orientation is reported. Sodium sulfide and zinc nitrate were employed to supply S and Zn atoms at 60 degrees C to form ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires structures. Electron diffraction measurement shows that the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanostructure is single crystalline. Interesting features are found in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnS-coated ZnO nanostructures. After coating, the UV emission of nanorods is dramatically enhanced at the expense of the green emission. The core/shell structure with higher band gap shell material and reduced surface states should be responsible for this PL enhancement.

Abstract:Heterogenous nanostructures shaped with CdS covered ZnO (ZnO/CdS) core/shell nanorods (NRs) are fabricated on indium-tin-oxide by pulsed laser deposition of CdS on hydrothermally grown ZnO NRs and characterized through morphology examination, structure characterization, photoluminescence and optical absorption measurements. Both the ZnO cores and the CdS shells are hexagonal wurtzite in structure. Compared with bare ZnO NRs, the fabricated ZnO/CdS core/shell NRs present an extended photo-response and have optical properties corresponding to the two excitonic band-gaps of ZnO and CdS as well as the effective band-gap formed between the conduction band minimum of ZnO and the valence band maximum of CdS. Abstract:Cu-, Eu-, or Mn-doped ZnS nanocrystalline phosphors were prepared at room temperature using a chemical synthesis method. Transmission electron microscopy observation shows that the size of the ZnS clusters is in the 3–18 nm range. New luminescence characteristics such as strong and stable visible-light emissions with different colors were observed from the doped ZnS nanocrystals at room temperature. These results strongly suggest that impurities, especially transition metals and rare-earth metals-activated ZnS nanoclusters form a new class of luminescent materials.

Abstract:A systematic investigation into the excitonic properties of wurtzite ZnS nanowires (NWs) is presented. Under optical excitation, the ZnS NWs exhibit strong ultraviolet (UV) emission. Optical transition from free exciton A, free exciton B, and shallow level emission are observed and analyzed through power-dependent and temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements performed from 10 to 300 K. The excitonic transition and coupling strength of exciton-longitudinal optical phonon were directly determined from the evolution of exciton peak energy and peak width broadening. Our studies indicate that free excitons in ZnS nanowires are very stable, suggesting a great promise for high-efficiency light-emitting devices and lasers in the UV region. Finally, the carrier dynamics of the ZnS NWs were measured and analyzed for the first time by ultrafast spectroscopy.
Electroluminescence From Doped Zns Nanocrystals Polymer Composite Systems

Abstract:ZnS, ZnS:Cu and ZnS/CdS nanocrystals were synthesized in polymer matrices with a variety of methods. TEM, absorption spectra and small-angle X-ray scattering studies showed that the particle sizes of ZnS, ZnS:Cu and ZnS/CdS nanocrystals were 3.0, 3.2 and 2.0nm respectively. Electron diffraction results showed that the ZnS and CdS nanocrystals have the hexagonal structures and Cu ions existed in ZnS with the form of Cu2S. A hole transport material tetraphenylbenzidine(TPB) were also doped into ZnS nanocrystals/polymer to improve the electroluminescent(EL) property of the ZnS nanocrystals. ZnS:Cu, ZnS/CdS and TPB/ZnS nanoparticles/polymer composite as emitters were used to fabricate a single layer structure light-emitting diode between ITO and Al electrodes respectively The photoluminescent and EL properties of these doped systems were studied. These EL devices had low turn on voltage(less than or equal to 4V) and the blue electroluminesence from Cu:ZnS and ZnS/CdS and a violet-blue electroluminescence from TPB:ZnS were observed respectively at room temperature under ambient air. The EL mechanism is also discussed.
Cadmium-Alloyed Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals in the Quantum Confinement Region with Intense Visible Luminescence

Abstract:Via an ultrasonic assisted sol-gel method, cadmium-alloyed zinc oxide nanocrystals in the quantum confinement region are firstly prepared. The nanocrystals show a wurtzite structure over all compositions. The homogenous structures of the samples are confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman analyses. With the increase of Cd/Zn mole ratio from 0 to 2.0, the band gap values of the samples first shift red then shift blue, and shift red again. The variation of band gap values for the samples is explained based on the compositions and crystallite sizes. The samples exhibit intense visible luminescence. The maximum of the visible luminescence systematically shifts to the lower wavelength with the decrease of the crystallite size. It is found that both the ultrasonic treatment and the coordination ability of triethylene glycol play important roles in the current sol-gel preparation.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a reverse micelle method with AOT(bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate, disodium salt) as surfactant. The photophysical properties of two colloidal systems, ZnS/AOT− and ZnS/pyridine/AOT−, have been investigated. The absorption spectra of the ZnS nanoparticles with different size and with different surface modification demonstrated the effects of quantum confinement and dielectric confinement on the band gap of colloidal ZnS nanoparticles. Photoluminescence measurements were carried out to investigate the energetic positions of the surface state, shallow trap and deep trap in band gap. The peaks in photoluminescence emission spectrum of ZnS/AOT− in heptane, located at 405 and 420 nm, were identified to be due to the electron–hole recombination from surface and internal vacancies for Zn and S atoms, respectively, while the peak at 385 nm was ascribed to the dangling bond of AOT− linked with the surface of ZnS nanoparticles. The study provides a method of differentiating deep trap, shallow trap and surface state in the band gap.

Abstract:SiO2 thin films co-doped with ZnO nanoparticles and Eu3+ ions were prepared by sol–gel method. The formation of nano-sized ZnO particles was confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy. The characteristic emission bands from Eu3+ ions can be observed at room temperature and the luminescence intensity is increased obviously by introducing ZnO nanoparticles into Eu3+-doped silica films. The integrated luminescence intensity is influenced by the concentration and size of ZnO particles, suggesting effective energy transfer from nano-sized ZnO to Eu3+ ions. It is argued that the efficient luminescence enhancement occurs under the suitable Zn2+ amount and annealing temperature.

Abstract:The observation of efficient blue, green, orange and red luminescence from CdS nanocrystals made by using a reverse micelle method was reported. The blue luminescence about 480 nm is attributed to the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs. The red luminescence around 650 nm is due to the radiative recombination of the exciton trapped in the nanocrystal surface defect states. The combination of different portion of band-edge emission and surface trap state emission results in green and orange luminescence for the nanocrystals. The CdS nanocrystals with efficient multicolored luminescence may find potential application in full color displays and biolabelings.

Abstract:Two ZnO nanostructures with multisegment structure have been synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method on a silicon substrate. The top size of the nanostructures can reduce to 10-30 nm, which is beneficial to field emission applications. Scanning and transmission electron microscope methods are applied to analyze the morphology and microstructure of the nanostructures. Cathodoluminescence study shows that the ZnO nanostructures have core-shell luminescent structure that will affect significantly the mechanical and electrical properties of the ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:ZnO/CdS core/shell nanorods (NRs) constructed of ZnO NR cores and CdS coating shells were fabricated by hydrothermally growing ZnO NRs and pulsed laser depositing CdS coatings on the grown ZnO NRs. The fabricated ZnO/CdS NRs were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and Raman backsattering spectroscopy. The optical and photoelectrochemical properties were evaluated and their correlation was studied. The ZnO cores and CdS shells are both in a hexagonal wurtzite structure with c-axis orientation. Compared with the bare ZnO NRs, the heterostructured ZnO/CdS NRs exhibit improved optical properties including strong visible light absorption and quenched photoluminescence. The former facilitates the generation of electron-hole pairs by visible optical excitation, and the latter reveals the suppressed radiative recombination of photogenerated charges and hence efficient charge transfer and separation.
