Abstract:Precise design of photocatalysts with the demanded active surface structure for highly efficient and selective CO2 photoreduction is crucial but challenging. Here, by taking CdS as a prototype, single-atom Cu is successfully constructed on Cd-deficient CdS (Cd1-xS) to improve the performance of CO2 photoreduction with H2O as proton donor. The optimal Cu/Cd1-xS with Cd vacancies (V-Cd)-mediated single-atom Cu exhibits nearly 100% selective CO production and a more than three-fold higher CO evolution rate compared to that of Cd1-xS. Both experimental identification and DFT theoretical simulation unveil that the V-Cd-mediated single-atom Cu render Cu-S pair sites to function as more catalytically active sites for dissociating H2O and promoting the corresponding proton supply, which favors the subsequent protonation of the adsorbed CO2 at the adjacent Cd sites via the two-proton coupled two-electron transfer pathway. This work demonstrates the importance of modulating proton supply from the oxidation half-reaction for facilitating the overall CO2 photoreduction, advocating an overall-reaction perspective for the design and development of highly efficient and selective CO2 conversion photocatalysts.
Rational Construction of CuO/CdS for Highly Selective CO2 to CO Conversion with S‐Scheme Photocatalysts

Abstract:Herein, the S‐scheme CuO/CdS heterojunction photocatalyst is prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. Through electrochemistry, electron spin resonance, and UV photoelectron spectroscopy, it is found that the electrons in CuO enter CdS according to the S‐type charge transfer mechanism. This results in the production of CO from CdS as the active site and enhances photocatalytic activity. The CO yield of 50%–CuO/CdS is the highest at 152.16 μmol g−1. Then, based on in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the possible photocatalytic reaction pathways are briefly speculated. In summary, the S‐scheme heterostructure accelerates the photocatalytic reaction kinetics of 50%–CuO/CdS, thereby improving its photocatalytic activity, thus improving its photocatalytic activity. The construction of S‐scheme heterojunctions has been widely used in photocatalytic reduction of CO2, and their interfacial charge transfer separation plays an important role. Herein, an S‐scheme CuO/CdS heterojunction has been designed and fabricated by a simple water bath method. Its excellent photocatalytic activity is achieved by the in situ growth of CdS particles on a CuO lamellar structure, a composite structure that provides a large number of active sites and improves CO2 absorption, resulting in a catalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity. The CO yield of the optimized sample can reach 152.16 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 7 and 10 times higher than that of CuO and CdS, respectively. In addition, electron spin resonance, UV photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to investigate the possible charge transfer mechanism, and the present study may provide effective insights into the design of S‐scheme heterojunction catalysts.

Abstract:CdS with a visible light response and energy band location suitable for CO 2 photoreduction has received extensive attention. However, low product selectivity and photocatalytic efficiency limit its application. Here, NaBH 4 is used as a reducing agent to generate Cd metal on the surface of CdS nanorods in situ. This leads to the construction of a B-CdS/Cd metal cocatalyst/semiconductor structure. This configuration significantly enhanced the CdS's activity of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The Cd metal which is on the surface of CdS nanorods promoted the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges and increased both light photosensitivity and CO 2 adsorption capabilities. The improved B-CdS/Cd catalyst shows excellent CO 2 reduction capabilities by generating CO at a rate of 323.39 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 2.01 times more than pure CdS, owing to the synergistic enhancements. Simultaneously, Cd acts as an active site inhibiting H 2 production during the CO 2 reduction reaction. This work demonstrates the potential of Cd metal as a metal cocatalyst in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Co(II) Species Modified CdS in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into value-added chemical fuels has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environmental/energy fields due to the low efficiency, especially in the inorganic aqueous environment. In this report, we present a facial approach to modify CdS with Co(II) species through controlling decarboxylation of the Co-EDTA precursor for improved CO2 reduction. Performance evaluation and microstructure characterization reveal that the resulted tetra-coordinated Co(II) modified CdS exhibits the most optimized CO evolution rate of 9.8 mu mol h(-1) (i.e., 392 mu mol h(-1) g((catalyst))(-1) with TOF of 7.94 h(-1)) in aqueous solution under visible light, where the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is significantly inhibited. Further investigation implies that the fully utilized Co(II) active sites, the tetra-coordinated Co(II) species, the favorable interaction between CO2 and Co(II) sites and efficient charge transferring ensured the high efficiency and improved selectivity. This work would provide a good strategy for the structure engineering of catalytic site to improve photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Cu3SnS4 with S vacancy and different ratios of Cu(I/II) and Sn(II/IV) was designed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction with high selectivity and activity in this study. The conduction band (CB) position dominated by the Sn(II) 5p orbital of Cu3SnS4 could be regulated via controlling the content of Sn(II). Cu(I) and Sn(IV) in crystal lattice acted as the adsorption sites of CO2 and H2O as demonstrated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, meanwhile Cu(I) had a strong adsorption ability to CO, which was conducive to further protonation for CH4 generation (CO2→COOH*→CO*→CHO*→CH2O*→CH3O*→CH4). S vacancy could result in the appearance of Cu(I) and Sn(II), which could successfully inhibit the electron-hole recombination and improve the reactivity (CH4 with yield of 22.65 μmol/g/h) and selectivity (CH4 ∼ 83.10 %). This work can shed some light on the synthetic method by controlling vacancy and elements to adjust CB position to increase reduction capability and selectivity.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into high-value-added chemicals has been recognized as a promising way to tackle the fossil fuel crisis. Quantum dots (QDs) have been extensively studied for photocatalytic CO2 reduction due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, most of the photogenerated charge carriers recombine before they participate in the photocatalytic reaction. It is crucial to regulate the charge carriers to minimize undesired charge recombination, thus, promoting surface photocatalysis. Herein, we report a copper-doped CdS (Cu:CdS) QD photocatalyst for CO2 reduction. Density functional theory simulations and experimental results demonstrate that Cu dopants create intermediate energy levels in CdS QDs that can extend the lifetime of exciton charge carriers. Furthermore, the long-lived charge carriers can be harnessed for the photocatalytic reaction on Cu:CdS QDs. The resultant Cu:CdS QDs exhibited a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity toward CO2 reduction compared to the pristine CdS QDs. This work highlights the importance of charge regulation in photocatalysts and opens new pathways for the exploration of efficient QD photocatalysts.

Abstract:CuGaS(2)is one of the most excellent visible-light-active photocatalysts for CO(2)reduction and water splitting. However, CuGaS(2)suffers from serious deactivation in photocatalytic reactions, which is mainly due to the photo-oxidation induced self-corrosion (Cu(+)to Cu2+). Here, we constructed a CuGaS2/CdS hybrid photocatalyst dominated by a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The transfer of photo-generated electrons from excited nanocrystalline CdS to CuGaS(2)across the coherent interface reduces Cu(2+)formation and favors Cu(+)regeneration. This process suppresses the deactivation of CuGaS(2)and maintains high performance. Both the activity and stability of photocatalytic CO(2)reduction to produce CO over the CuGaS2/CdS hybrid were remarkably improved, which was approximately 4-fold higher than CuGaS(2)and 3-fold higher than CdS in converting CO(2)into CO. Our study demonstrates that even using the semiconductors prone to photo-corrosion, it is possible to obtain satisfactory catalytic activity and stability by designing efficient Z-scheme-charge-transfer-type photocatalysts.
γ-Radiation Induced Deposition of Au Nanoparticles on Defect-Rich CdS for Enhanced CO2 Photoreduction Under Visible Light

Abstract:Photoreduction of CO 2 into high-value chemicals is one of the promising strategies to mitigate CO 2 emission and alleviate energy challenges, while the design and development of high-performance photocatalysts are recognized as the pivotal part. Herein, CdS-xAu catalysts with abundant S vacancies and Au nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via one-step γ-ray radiation method. The characterization results showed that the CdS-γ had smaller spherical particles compared to the CdS-H catalyst prepared by hydrothermal method, which was favorable for exposing more active sites. Besides, the Au was reduced by solvated electrons and anchored on the in situ generated S vacancies within CdS. By acting as the photogenerated electrons extractors, the generated Au nanoparticles synergized with S vacancies to promote the charge separation and inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carriers, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activities. Consequently, the CdS-2.5Au photocatalyst with appropriate loading amount presented the optimal performance for achieving the CO yield of 12.48 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was superior to CdS-γ and even 2.8 times that of the hydrothermal synthesized CdS-H. This study provided new insights into the applications of γ-ray radiation in the preparation of high-performance photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Single-site metal atoms or clusters(SMCs)present high potential to enable the exploration of energetics and kinetics in heterogeneous photocatalysis owing to their unique properties.Here,we report the first work for highly no ligands-protected atomic-level Cu clusters by mediating them in Cd vacancies at the edge of CdS nanorods(CuCR SCC)towards photocatalytic CO2 conversion.X-ray absorption spectromet-ric analysis and photoelectric dynamic characterizations demonstrate that the well-defined Cu clusters across the Cd vacancies induce a synergistic effect on CO2 reduction through the interfacial conjunction,accelerating charge carrier mobility and facilitating atom utilization.In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy,low-coverage calculated isosteric heat,and theoretical studies unveil that the direct cluster/substrate conjunction provides a driving force for interfacial electronic modification and dynamic cooperation.Besides,Cu acts as the active site in the process of CO2 photoreduction,which en-hances the adsorption and activation of CO2.Consequently,this leads to outstanding CO2-to-CO conver-sion with a turnover number of more than 90 without the addition of any sacrificial agent.Particularly,the Cu clusters-mediated CdS nanorods are able to serve as carrier provider,allowing the photogenerated electrons transfer from CdS to Cu clusters.These electrons received from CdS can further enhance the charge carrier separation and thus achieve high photostability during longtime light irradiation.

Constructing N-Coordinated Co and Cu Single-Atomic-Pair Sites Toward Boosted CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) (CO2RR) to value-added fuels presents a feasible approach to curb anthropogenic CO2 emissions and mitigate the increasing energy crisis. However, developing photocatalysts with excellent performance still remains a great challenge in this field. Herein Co,Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1Cu1/NC) were fabricated through the pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) with Cu(NO3)2 adsorbed inside the cavities and CoTBPP decorated over the surface of ZIF. Spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements disclose the dual-metal single-atomic nature of Co1Cu1/NC consisting of atomically dispersed Co-Cu pair sites on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis reveals the tetra-N-coordinated nature of each metal in Co1Cu1/NC (N2-Co-N2-Cu-N2). For the purpose of comparative study, Co,N-and Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1/NC and Cu1/NC) also with single atomic site nature have been fabricated following the same route. The as-prepared Co1Cu1/NC exhibits highly effective photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction with a considerably high CO-generating yield of 22.46 mmol g-1 and a CO selectivity of 83.4% after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. Experimental characterizations and in particular theoretical calculations disclose the close association of the remarkable CO2RR catalytic activity of Co1Cu1/NC with the synergetic effect of the Co-Cu atomic-pair sites, which facilitate the conversion of CO2 to CO via lowering the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate. This work paves a new avenue for the rational design and construction of atomic-pair photocatalysts with boosted performance.
CdS-based ternary composite material for high-efficiency photocatalytic CO 2 reduction via a cascade electron transfer

Abstract:CdS conductor has a suitable band gap (~2.4 eV), and the energy band position is conducive to photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is highly confined by its unfavored carrier transfer. In this study, a moderately in-situ growth method is harnessed to insert commercial TiO 2 particles (P25) into the CdS grains in the first place, and the resulted CdS-P25 composite is further integrated with to a mixed-ligand-based metal organic framework (MOF), CuTCPP⊂UiO-66 (CTU), which is structure-analogous to regular UiO-66 MOF but with visible light response thanks to the involvement of copper(II) tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (CuTCPP) ligand. The eventually attained ternary composite (CTU/CdS-P25) by solvothermal approach presents a broadened light absorption and an impressive delivery for photo-induced carriers. The light-driven catalytic assessment of CTU/CdS-P25 for CO 2 reduction furnishes the CO production rate as great as 2.38 μmol·h −1 , as much as 3.9 and 8.8 times that of UiO/CdS-P25 and CdS-P25, respectively. According to the value determination of band edge for each component of the ternary composite, we proposed that the established heterojunction facilitates a cascade electron transfer mode within the structure, which highly suppresses the adverse recombination of carriers and thereafter significantly enhances the photocatalytic behavior. Our work provides an effective perspective for the melioration of CdS semiconductor.

A Hierarchical Heterostructure of CdS QDs Confined on 3D ZnIn2S4 with Boosted Charge Transfer for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Metal sulfide based materials as photocatalysts for energy conversion are essential to produce value-added chemical fuels, but their intrinsically slow carrier dynamics and low activity are yet to be resolved. Herein, we developed a unique heterogeneously nanostructured ZnIn2S4-CdS heterostructure that involves zero-dimensional (0D) CdS quantum dots uniformly confined on three-dimensional (3D) ZnIn(2)S(4)nanoflowers, which achieves an excellent catalytic performance of CO2 photoconversion under visible-light irradiation. The obtained hierarchical heterostructure can significantly enhance the light harvesting, shorten the migration distance of carriers, and obviously accelerate the transport of electrons. As evidenced by the ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, the formed interface can effectively facilitate charge separation and transport. This work opens up a new avenue to carefully design the elaborate heterostructures for achieving optimal charge separation efficiency by lowering interfacial kinetic barriers and energy losses at the interface.

Abstract:It is important to improve the separation ability of photogenerated electrons and the adsorption capacity of carbon dioxide (CO2) for efficient photoreduction of CO2. Here, we synthesized ZnCdS quantum dots (ZCS-QDs) and cerium dioxide nanosheets (CeO2) using the solvothermal method and calcination method. We combined CeO2 and ZCS-QDs to effectively enhance the charge separation efficiency, and the lifetime of photogenerated electrons was increased 4.5 times. The CO evolution rate of the optimized composite (ZCS-QDs/CeO2) was up to 495.8 μmol g−1 h−1, and it had 100% product selectivity. In addition, the stability remained high after five cycles. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the catalyst surface was observed by in situ FTIR. The test results showed that improving CO2 capture ability and promoting photogenic electron separation had positive effects on enhancing photoreduction of CO2. This study provides a reference for constructing a zero-dimensional–two-dimensional (0D–2D) heterojunction and explores potential CO2 reduction reaction mechanisms.

A rapidly room-temperature-synthesized Cd/ZnS:Cu nanocrystal photocatalyst for highly efficient solar-light-powered CO 2 reduction

Abstract:An efficient and solar light active CO2 reduction photocatalyst is designed by rationally engineering ZnS nanocrystals through Cu+ doping and Cd2+ surface modification. The Cd/ZnS:Cu is noble metal free and can be instantly synthesized at room temperature. It is an ideal model catalyst and has wide applications related to photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:CuGaS(2)is one of the most excellent visible-light-active photocatalysts for CO(2)reduction and water splitting. However, CuGaS(2)suffers from serious deactivation in photocatalytic reactions, which is mainly due to the photo-oxidation induced self-corrosion (Cu(+)to Cu2+). Here, we constructed a CuGaS2/CdS hybrid photocatalyst dominated by a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The transfer of photo-generated electrons from excited nanocrystalline CdS to CuGaS(2)across the coherent interface reduces Cu(2+)formation and favors Cu(+)regeneration. This process suppresses the deactivation of CuGaS(2)and maintains high performance. Both the activity and stability of photocatalytic CO(2)reduction to produce CO over the CuGaS2/CdS hybrid were remarkably improved, which was approximately 4-fold higher than CuGaS(2)and 3-fold higher than CdS in converting CO(2)into CO. Our study demonstrates that even using the semiconductors prone to photo-corrosion, it is possible to obtain satisfactory catalytic activity and stability by designing efficient Z-scheme-charge-transfer-type photocatalysts.
Disruption Symmetric Crystal Structure Favoring Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction: Reduced *COOH Formation Energy Barrier on Al Doped CuS/TiO2

Abstract:In this work, the symmetric structure and electron localization range of CuS are successfully adjusted via Al doping and S vacancy. Due to the destruction of CuS symmetry structure, more metal Cu sites are exposed and the electronic structure of the active sites is regulated, which expands the electron localization range and facilitates the adsorption of CO2 and *COOH, which speeds up the photocatalytic CO2 reduction rate. How to break the C═O bond and reduce the energy barrier of *COOH formation is the key to triggering the photocatalytic CO2 reduction (PCR) reaction and subsequent proton‐electron processes, which is as important as overcoming high recombination rate of photocarriers. In order to solve this issue, the symmetric structure of CuS/TiO2 is destroyed by S vacancy and Al doping (denoted as Al‐CuS/TiO2), which significantly expands the electron localization range and promotes the cis‐coordination splitting of Cu 3d orbits. The experimental results show that the CO yield selectivity of ≈90.68% and yield of ≈335.68 μmol·g−1·h−1 on Al‐CuS/TiO2. The redistribution of Cu electron states in specific d/s/p orbitals increases the adsorption of CO2 and reduces the reaction energy barrier of *COOH intermediates, while effectively breaking the C═O bond. Doped Al atoms also serve as adsorption sites for H2O molecules, effectively interleaving the competition with photocatalytic CO2 reduction at the Cu sites is effectively staggered. This study provides a new approach to reduce the energy barrier of *COOH formation and to accelerate the photocarrier migration by destroying local symmetry to adjust the crystal structure, which is important for further improving the activity and selectivity of PCR.

Abstract:The d-band states of catalytic materials participate in adsorbing reactive intermediate species and determine the catalytic behaviors in CO2 reduction reactions. However, surface d-band states relating to the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions behaviors are rarely concerned. Herein, a slightly amount of Cd2+ is decorated on the surface of (CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4 material (Cd2+/(CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4) to tune the surface d-band states for improved CO2 reduction reactions. The Cd2+/(CuGa) x Zn1-2x Ga2S4 is fabricated via the facile ions-exchange method to make that slightly Zn2+ is substituted by Cd2+. The Cd2+/(CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4 exhibits much enhanced photocatalytic activity in CO2 reduction reactions to produce CO and water splitting to produce H2. Physical characterizations show that the energy band structure is not changed obviously. Density functional theory reveals that Cd2+/(CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4 possesses a closer shift of d-band center to Fermi level than (CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4, suggesting easier adsorption of CO2 reduction reactive intermediates after Cd2+ decoration. Further calculations confirm that a relatively reduced adsorption Gibbs energy of reactive intermediates in CO2 reduction reaction is required on Zn atoms in Cd2+/(CuGa) x Zn1-2 x Ga2S4 material, benefiting the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. This work engineers surface d-band states by surface Cd2+ decoration, which gives an effective strategy to design highly efficient photocatalysts for syngas production.
