Abstract:The synthesis of nanostructured zeolites enables modification of catalytically relevant properties such as effective surface area and diffusion path length. Nanostructured zeolites may be synthesized either in alkaline media, and so contain significant numbers of hydrophilic silanol groups, or in expensive and harmful fluoride-containing media. Here, we report and characterize, using a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques, the one-pot synthesis of silanol-free nanosized MFI-type zeolites by introducing atomically dispersed tungsten; this prevents silanol group occurrence by forming flexible W–O–Si bridges. These W–O–Si bonds are more stable than Si–O–Si in the all-silica MFI zeolite. Tungsten incorporation in nanosized MFI crystals also modifies other properties such as structural features, hydrophobicity and Lewis acidity. The effect of these is illustrated on the catalytic epoxidation of styrene and separation of CO2 and NO2. Silanol-free nanosized W-MFI zeolites open new perspectives for catalytic and separation applications.

Abstract:C ore-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite could effectively hinder the deactivation of catalyst surface. Currently, organic structure directing agents(OSDAs) are necessary in the conventional route for the synthesis of this core-shell zeolite under hydrothermal conditions, which is costly and environmental-unfriendly. In this research, a synthesis of the core-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite with a strategy of alcohol filling and zeolite seeding without any organic template or solvent is exhibited. The obtained products are well characterized by X-ray powder diffractometer(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), N 2 sorption isotherms, solid magic angle spinning(MAS) NMR, temperature-programmed-desorption of ammonia(NH 3 -TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) techniques, in order to confirm the core-shell structure. More importantly, the core-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite exhibits a long lifetime and a high p -xylene selectivity in the alkylation of toluene with methanol, compared with the conventional ZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:A TS-1 zeolite with a disordered network of mesopores penetrating the microporous crystalline zeolite framework was successfully synthesized by a one-pot carbon hard-templating synthesis approach Besides conventional methods to characterize the mesoporosity, the use of variable-temperature Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy was explored. At low temperature, a new resonance of Xe-129 adsorbed in the mesopores could be distinguished from the signal of Xe in the micropores. The. similarity of UV-vis and UV resonance Raman spectra of this mesoporous TS-1 zeolite with a conventional microporous TS-1 zeolite shows that the local coordination environment of Ti in these samples is identical Further characterization (TEM, XRD) indicates that phase sepal anon of titanium oxide is absent. The mesoporous TS-1 zeolite exhibits improved catalytic activity in the hydroxylation of phenol and ammoxidation of methyl ethyl ketone The catalytic activity is substantially improved by introducing mesoporosity in TS-1. whereas the selectivity to the desired products is very similar. The improved catalytic activity of the TS-1 with the hierarchical structure is mainly attributed to the improved mass transfer of reactants and products into and out of the zeolite micropores. The generation of the hierarchical pore structure by the one-pot carbon-templating route becomes a general strategy for the synthesis of hierarchical zeolite with different compositions

Abstract:We have demonstrated that an organotemplate-free and seed-directed route has been successfully applied for synthesizing Fe-Beta zeolite with good crystallinity, high surface area, uniform crystals, and tetrahedral Al3+ and Fe3+ species. Catalytic tests for the direct decomposition of nitrous oxide indicate that the Fe-Beta exhibits excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:The metal-exchanged zeolites as catalysts have been widely applied in many catalytic reactions, but their syntheses are environmentally unfriendly due to the multiple steps such as ion-exchange for the formation of a large amount of wastes. Herein, we for the first time report a method for one-pot fabrication of metal-zeolite catalysts (M-SSZ-13, M-Beta, M-ZSM-5, and M-EU-1; M = Cu, Co, Ni) from a combination of solvent-free and sodium-free routes by mixing, grinding, and heating the raw materials of aluminosilicate gel, organic templates, and metalamine complexes. As a typical example, Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite is successfully synthesized from heating the mixture of aluminosilicate gel, organic template, and Cu-amine complex. Catalytic tests in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) show that the synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite before and after hydrothermal aging at 750 degrees C for 16 h are completely comparable with the commercial Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite from the conventional hydrothermal synthesis. Very interestingly, the method in this work has obvious advantages such as high yield, reduced pollutants, and simple process, which should be potentially important for practical applications of the metal-zeolites in the future.

Abstract:Developing sustainable synthesis method of versatile zeolites to overcome the shortcoming of traditional process is of significant for development of green chemistry and environmentally friendly techniques. In this work, MFI zeolite (ZSM-5) was synthesized through organotemplate-, solvent- and seed-free sustainable process comprising physical grinding and quasi-solid state crystallization and utilizing commercial silica gel or Stöber colloidal SiO 2 as silica source. The key influencing factors to this sustainable synthesis process, such as starting material composition, crystallization temperature and time, had been unambiguously investigated by combining a series of characterization techniques. It is revealed that the starting material with SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 and Na 2 O/SiO 2 at 30–40 and 0.072, respectively, is suitable to obtain zeolite product with high crystallinity. The presence of right amount of water (or alcohol) is also crucial. In addition, this green synthesis method can be extended into the fabrication of encapsulated metal-zeolite bifunctional catalyst, which is effective in hydroisomerization of n -heptane. These results are instructive for development of sustainable synthesis of aluminosilicate zeolites and derived heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:How to directionally design the hollow zeolite via a green route is of great significance. Here, we successfully synthesized the hollow Fe-silicate-1 encapsulated ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles (2.5 nm) with higher yield (85.2%) by mother liquid than traditional dissolution-recrystallization for the first time, which was achieved by precisely regulating the number and distribution of defects in zeolite and cleverly utilizing the TPAOH and nuclei in mother liquor. The effects of synthetic temperature, synthetic period and addition amount of parent zeolite on the formation of hollow zeolite have been investigated and the effect of synthetic conditions on the defects in parent zeolite has been also firstly quantified. The corresponding formation mechanism has been proposed. The abundant inner defects provided by the zeolite synthesized at 130 °C for 1 day and large amount of TPAOH remaining in mother liquid are conducive to the formation of hollow zeolite. Meanwhile, both parent zeolite and nuclei (4-, 5-member rings and structure units) in mother liquid obtained at 130 °C play the crucial roles in enhancing the zeolite yield. Notably, Fe2O3 nanoparticles could decompose into small fragments by the interaction with nuclei in mother liquid. Partial ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles would be encapsulated in cavity and the rest could be inserted in the zeolite framework, which is significantly different from the conventional dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. The obtained encapsulated catalyst shows the superior catalytic performance and stability in phenol and tetracycline degradation reactions.

Abstract:Developing sustainable routes for the synthesis of zeolites is still a vital and challenging task in zeolite scientific community. One of the typical examples is sustainable synthesis of aluminosilicate EU-1 zeolite, which is not very efficient and environmental-unfriendly under hydrothermal condition due to the use of a large amount of water as solvent. Herein, we report a sustainable synthesis route for aluminosilicate EU-1 zeolite without the use of solvent for the first time. The physicochemical properties of the obtained EU-1 zeolite are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), N2 sorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis, and solid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which show the product has high crystallinity, uniform morphology, large BET surface area, and four-coordinated aluminum species. Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolite with well-matched acidity and diffusivity is of significance for the improvement of acid catalytic performance. This study reports a novel synthesis for the twin-free ZSM-5 single crystal with nanoscaled b-axis orientation and its super performance in methanol to propylene (MTP) reaction. The synergistic effect of ZSM-5 nanosheet seed and n-butylamine template, the target ZSM-5 zeolite was achieved at a short crystallization time of 3.0 h. The as-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolite exposes open and high proportion of straight channels and features an inverse Al zoned distribution, which largely improves the intrinsic molecular diffusion and inhibits coke formation at the external surface. Finally, the optimal nanoslab ZSM-5 zeolite performs high MTP performance, i.e., the selectivity to propylene up to 50%, light olefins more than 80%, along with a very long catalytic life of 297 h at WHSV of 6 h–1. The role of the nanosheet seed in the crystallization process was studied by examining the structure evolution of the sol species by SAXS, XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, FT-IR, etc. Results show that addition of ZSM-5 nanosheet seed can avoid secondary nucleation on the surface of a crystallizing zeolite and proves a quasi-solid-phase crystallization mechanism. Thus, the crystallization process belongs to a classical synthesis route, because the growth structure units are the smaller sized particle according to SAXS analysis.

Abstract:Fabrication of suitable zeolite-based multifunctional catalysts has been perceived as a potential method for CO 2 conversion to value-added chemicals and fuels. Thus, a highly crystallized LSX zeolite was prepared directly for the first time without aging and strong alkali sodium/potassium salt. Besides, the hierarchical structure was also successfully introduced by template-free method. The resulted LSX zeolite-based catalyst can significantly boost CO 2 hydrogenation with a preferential production of methanol (100% selectivity). This can be owing to the electron transfer between extra framework aluminum (EFAl) and ZnO species that drives the remarkable adsorption capability of CO 2 and the formate activation pathway. Furthermore, the highly dispersive Cu nanoparticles that interplay with zeolite host and ZnO species render convenient access to the activated CO 2 * species for those dissociated H after their spillover. More importantly, an exceptional stability can also be obtained, indicating the promising prospect in practical and industrial application.

Abstract:Highly efficient synthesis of zeolites is an important goal given the many catalytic applications of zeolites in industrial chemical processes. The conventional zeolite syntheses, i.e., hydrothermal synthesis in a batch setup are usually challenged by certain limiting factors deriving from the long synthesis period or the low yield. Herein, we report that a combined strategy of organic promoter and zeolite seeding can remarkably improve the synthetic efficiency of high silica SSZ-13 zeolite. The low-cost promoter diethylamine (DEA) and zeolite seeds could both remarkably accelerate the crystallization rate of SSZ-13 zeolite, and DEA has a much higher beneficial effect on the solid yield as compared to the zeolite seeds. Consequently, the crystallization time could be unprecedentedly shorted by a factor of 30, instead of multiple days normally required. Besides, this novel protocol also exhibits high atom efficiency (93% of yield). The resultant high-silica nano-sized SSZ-13 zeolite shows good (hydro)thermal stability along with excellent catalytic performance for the MTO reaction.

Abstract:Zeolites-microporous crystalline aluminosilicates-are widely used in petrochemistry and fine-chemical synthesis because strong acid sites within their uniform micropores enable size- and shape-selective catalysis. But the very presence of the micropores, with aperture diameters below 1 nm, often goes hand-in-hand with diffusion limitations that adversely affect catalytic activity. The problem can be overcome by reducing the thickness of the zeolite crystals, which reduces diffusion path lengths and thus improves molecular diffusion. This has been realized by synthesizing zeolite nanocrystals, by exfoliating layered zeolites, and by introducing mesopores in the microporous material through templating strategies or demetallation processes. But except for the exfoliation, none of these strategies has produced 'ultrathin' zeolites with thicknesses below 5 nm. Here we show that appropriately designed bifunctional surfactants can direct the formation of zeolite structures on the mesoporous and microporous length scales simultaneously and thus yield MFI (ZSM-5, one of the most important catalysts in the petrochemical industry) zeolite nanosheets that are only 2 nm thick, which corresponds to the b-axis dimension of a single MFI unit cell. The large number of acid sites on the external surface of these zeolites renders them highly active for the catalytic conversion of large organic molecules, and the reduced crystal thickness facilitates diffusion and thereby dramatically suppresses catalyst deactivation through coke deposition during methanol-to-gasoline conversion. We expect that our synthesis approach could be applied to other zeolites to improve their performance in a range of important catalytic applications.

Abstract:Ionothermal synthesis has been widely used for the preparation of aluminophosphate-based molecular sieves, coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. However, this method is still challenging for synthesis of silica-based zeolites. Herein, we show a generalized ionothermal route to synthesize silica-based zeolites with MTT, TON, ITW, and MFI structures in the presence of NH4F as a mineralizing agent and ionic liquid as a solvent and/or structure directing agent. The presence of a suitable amount of NH4F plays a key role for the successful synthesis of these silica-based zeolites. This methodology might open a pathway to ionthermally synthesize silica-based zeolites.

Abstract:As a size- and shape-selective catalyst, zeolites are widely used in petroleum and fine-chemicals processing. However, their small micropores severely hinder molecular diffusion and are sensitive to coke formation. Hierarchically porous zeolite single crystals with fully interconnected, ordered, and tunable multimodal porosity at macro-, meso-, and microlength scale, like in leaves, offer the ideal solution. However, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Here, we report a versatile confined zeolite crystallization process to achieve these superior properties. Such zeolite single crystals lead to significantly improved mass transport properties by shortening the diffusion length while maintaining shape-selective properties, endowing them with a high efficiency of zeolite crystals, enhanced catalytic activities and lifetime, highly reduced coke formation, and reduced deactivation rate in bulky-molecule reactions and methanol-to-olefins process. Their industrial utilization can lead to the design of innovative and intensified reactors and processes with highly enhanced efficiency and minimum energy consumption.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolite has good hydrothermal stability and is widely used in fields such as hydrocarbon catalytic cracking and nitrogen oxide removal. In this study, a simple crystal seed solution assisted method was developed for the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite without template from solid waste. The perlite tailings are not suitable for traditional perlite industrial production due to their small particle size. It was used as the main silicon source and the sole aluminum source to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite. The effects of synthesis conditions, such as SiO2/Al2O3, Na2O/SiO2 and H2O/SiO2 molar ratios, on the properties of the products were investigated, and the best preparation conditions were optimized. The crystallization mechanism of the crystal seed solution assisted method to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite from the perlite tailings was explored. In addition, the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by copper ion exchange method, and its performance of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx was studied. The experimental results showed that the product ZSM-5 zeolite has a high degree of crystallization and typical hexagonal pyramid morphology. The as-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolite had a large specific surface area, and it had both micropores and mesopores. The as-synthesized Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst had a wide denitrification activity window of 230-500 degrees C (denitrification efficiency of more than 90%) and N2 selectivity was over 96% in the temperature range of 100-540 degrees C. The crystal seed solution induced crystallization strategy can be used to prepare zeolites catalysts with high silica-alumina ratio from pearlite waste by one-step method. This method has a good industry application prospect due to simple steps and lower cost.

Abstract:Constructing zeolite catalysts with excellent mass transfer and active site accessibility is the key to improving their catalytic efficiencies. Herein, a zeolite subcrystal catalyst with high short-range ordering but X-ray amorphism is prepared to minimize the existing molecular mass-transfer barrier of conventional zeolite catalysts. Various characterizations confirm its size of smaller than 10 nm, definite MFI framework, complete opened micropore channel, and abundant accessible acid sites. Moreover, physical and chemisorption results reveal that the high short-range ordering MFI zeolite subcrystal possesses negligible intracrystalline diffuse limitation and utmost accessibility for the active site. As anticipated, the zeolite subcrystal catalyst not only demonstrates high cracking efficiency in polyolefin cracking reactions but also exhibits outstanding catalytic activity and resistance to carbon deposition in macromolecular furfuryl alcohol etherification reaction. The controlled MFI zeolite subcrystal catalyst synthesis strategy is expected to extend to a variety of microporous materials.

Abstract:Development of the sustainable routes for synthesis of ITQ-family zeolites is very important because of their unique structures and excellent catalytic and adsorptive properties. The burden of costly raw materials and low efficiency of synthesis put a strong challenge for their widespread commercial application. Here, we show an alternative and simple route for synthesis of ITQ-12, ITQ-13, and ITQ-17 zeolites using commercially available organic templates by a facile grinding process of anhydrous starting raw solids, followed by heating at 140-180.. Compared with the conventional hydrothermal synthesis, this approach has obvious advantages such as employment of low-cost organic templates with very high effectiveness, high yield of zeolite products, short crystallization time, and relatively simple procedures. This methodology might open a pathway to synthesize ITQ zeolites with more sustainable manner.
