Abstract:We evaluate the advantages of using the extra dimension introduced by space-division multiplexing (SDM) for dynamic bandwidth-allocation purposes in a flexible optical network. In that respect, we aim to compare spectral and spatial super-channel (Sp-Ch) allocation policies in an SDM network based on bundles of SMFs (to eliminate coupling between spatial dimensions from the study) and to investigate the role of modulation format selection in the blocking probability performance with an emphasis on the spectral efficiency (SE)/reach tradeoff for different multiline-rate scenarios, created either by changing the number of sub-channels (Sb-Ch), or by employing different modulation formats. Our network-performance results show that DP-8QAM -in a multichannel (MC) single-modulation-format system assuming ITU-T 50-GHz WDM Sb-Ch spectrum occupation-offers the best compromise between SE and optical reach for both spectral and spatial Sp-Ch allocation policies. They also reveal that an MC multimodulation-format system improves the network performance, particularly for spectral Sp-Ch allocation with Sb-Ch spectrum occupation of 37.5 GHz on the 12.5-GHz grid. Additionally, as another important contribution of the paper, we investigate, for spatial Sp-Ch allocation, the performance of several SDM switching options: independent switching (InS), which offers highest flexibility, joint-switching (JoS), which routes all spatial modes as a single entity, and fractional-joint switching, which separates out the spatial modes into sub-sets of spatial modes which are routed independently. JoS is proved to offer a similar performance to that of InS for particular network load profiles, while allowing a significant reduction in the number of wavelength-selective switches.

Abstract:This paper proposes a dynamic routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMLSA) scheme in the flexible optical wavelength-division multiplexing (FWDM) networks with modulation format conversion ability. The scheme considers the modulation format conversion at the intermediate nodes and addresses the fragmentation problem by avoiding appearance of them. The influence of routing to the emergence of the fragmentation is quantified, which is referenced to decide which one route of k-paths to use. Simulation results demonstrate efficient reductions in blocking rates and improvements in failure recovery rates for the scheme in the network.

Abstract:To keep pace with the rapidly increasing network traffic demand anticipated in the coming years, space-division multiplexing (SDM) has become a promising technology for overcoming the limitations of the current wavelength-division multiplexing based optical networks. The key advantage of SDM-based optical transmission is that it increases the network capacity by extending the available spatial dimensions. In this context, several innovative technologies have been proposed to support spatially and spectrally flexible all-optical transmission. One typical technology of this kind is called spatial and spectral super-channel (Spa & Spe SpCh) transmission. Newly designed Spa & Spe SpCh transceivers can support high-speed transmission with excellent spectral efficiency by allowing the optical carriers to be flexibly distributed in both the spatial and spectral domains without guardbands. In addition, SDM-based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) with varying spatial switching granularities and add/drop ports have been developed to support super-channel transmission (e.g., routing and add/drop). Moreover, ROADMs with spatial lane change support, which can further improve the routing flexibility in the network layer, have also been proposed in recent years. Different modes of implementation of the aforementioned technologies have distinct advantages and disadvantages. These technologies can be combined in various ways to support different types of SDM transmission, leading to variable network performance. In this paper, we evaluate the device cost, power consumption, and network performance of SDM transmission systems based on different implementations of these technologies to serve as a reference for future research.

Abstract:The use of multi-granularity OXC in DWDM network results in reduction of the number of ports both for the switches and for the optical multiplexers and de-multiplexers, which lead to cost saving. However, it introduces more difficulties for the routing and wavelength assignment problem. In this paper, a new model, called Multi-Dimension-Graph, is proposed to provide an exact description of the states of multi-granularity WDM network. The algorithm based on the MDS-G can solve routing and wavelength assignment subproblems in multi-granularity networks simultaneously. The simulation results prove that the algorithm based on the MDS-G performs better than existing algorithms that deal with routing and wavelength assignment separately.

Abstract:In order to address the spectrum fragmentation problem in flexible grid optical networks,the spectrum fusion oriented routing and spectrum allocation algorithm and spectrum defragmentation algorithm are proposed.The notions of spectrum allocation window,spectrum allocation point and spectrum fusion window are introduced to optimize the network resource utilization.To retain the spectrum consecutiveness as much as possible when establishing a lightpath and reduce the spectrum fragments,the proposed RSA algorithm considers the spectrum utilization in candidate links and their adjacent links.The spectrum defragmentation algorithm is used to make enough room for the blocked request by rerouting already established lightpaths.Simulation results reveal that the algorithms significantly improve the blocking probability performance and resource utilization under dynamic traffic in flexible grid optical networks.

Abstract:The increasing demand for network bandwidth highlights the critical need to enhance optical transmission systems. Utilizing the entire C-band for a single optical channel(OCh) eliminates the requirement for wavelength switching, prompting the emergence of spatial channel networks (SCNs). SCNs transform the optical layer into hierarchical spatial division multiplexing (SDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) layers through the implementation of hierarchical optical cross-connects (HOXCs). A HOXC comprises a spatial channel cross-connect (SXC) for spatial bypass switching and multiple wavelength cross-connects (WXCs) for wavelength channel switching, ensuring efficient optical transmission. Therefore, the design of the HOXC plays a pivotal role in determining both the device cost and network performance in SCNs. This study investigates the impact of wavelength switching granularity on core-selective switch (CSS)-based HOXC architectures. We propose an adaptive dynamic Routing, Spatial Channel, and Spectrum Assignment (RSCSA) algorithm to solve routing and resource allocation problems in SCNs. By examining SCN designs with varying wavelength switching granularities, we assess the overall network deployment cost, considering both network throughput and spectrum resource utilization. Our findings indicate that adjusting the granularity of wavelength switching in SCNs can significantly affect device costs and performance, highlighting the importance of identifying an optimal SCN design that strikes a balance between these factors. These insights offer valuable guidance for the practical planning and management of future SCN deployments.

Abstract:The explosive growth of internet traffic has accelerated the evolution of optical transport networks, emphasizing the need to expand transmission capacity. To overcome the limitations of conventional single-core/mode fiber-based optical transmission, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) has been proposed. Spatial and spectral superchannel (Spa & Spe SpCh) technology in SDM-based optical networks realizes high-capacity transmission. Such an optical transmission technology can be supported by the Spa & Spe SpCh transceiver and the reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM), allocating optical carriers (OCs) in spatial and spectral domains simultaneously. The architectures of the manufactured transceivers and ROADMs installed in advance at each network node are fixed. This necessitates the determination of the appropriate spatial and spectral granularity combination that affects the transceiver and ROADM designs to efficiently utilize the switching capacity and reduce the implementation costs. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for the $N$ -core MCF-based network deployment issues under different granularity combinations. Detailed evaluation of a 4-core MCF-based network reveals that the device cost and network performance are influenced by spatial and spectral granularities and can provide guidance for real-world network planning and design. In particular, the trade-off between device cost and network performance based on different granularities should be taken into account in network design.

Abstract:In the past few decades, the architecture of optical networks has undergone significant evolution, from the earliest wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks to elastic optical networks (EONs) and later to space-division multiplexing (SDM) EONs, to address the continuous growth of Internet traffic. By 2024, Pbps-level optical networks are expected, far exceeding the capacity limit of single-mode fibers. The massive SDM era is on the horizon. In this context, a newly designed architecture for optical networks called the spatial channel network (SCN) architecture, which achieves high cost efficiency by means of practical hierarchical optical cross-connects, has recently been proposed. However, the evolution of optical network architectures will simultaneously present challenges related to network optimization. For instance, with the evolution from WDM optical networks to EONs, the kernel network optimization problem was transformed from the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem into the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) problem due to the additionally introduced constraint of spectrum contiguity. Similarly, specially designed algorithms are also expected to be essential for addressing the network optimization problem in SCNs. In this paper, we define this new problem as the routing, spatial channel, and spectrum assignment (RSCSA) problem. We propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model and a heuristic algorithm to solve the RSCSA problem. We examine the performance of the proposed approaches via simulation experiments. The results show that both proposed approaches are effective in finding the optimal solutions or solutions close to the lower bounds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to focus on the network optimization problem in SCNs.

Abstract:The exponential growth of Internet traffic necessitates high-capacity optical networks and has also highlighted the importance of bandwidth-flexible and multi-granularity transport platforms. Improving both transport capacity and bandwidth flexibility is a significant challenge in optical networks. A bitrate flexible network architecture that is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing has been proposed as a promising solution for meeting this challenge. In the current study, we focus on the online routing and spectrum assignment problems in the aforementioned network architecture and introduce a general solution for dynamic bitrate flexible traffic in distributed environments. A novel spectrum representation method based on continuous spectrum segments is introduced into the networks. Segment-based routing and signaling mechanisms provide general solutions that support both the conventional slot-based networks and the ideal fully gridless networks. The routing algorithms and spectrum selection approaches are demonstrated and compared in a simulation. Performance estimation indicates that random spectrum segment assignment achieves the lowest capacity blocking rate in light traffic, whereas the adaptive routing plus minimum residual spectrum scheme obtains the lowest capacity blocking rate under heavy traffic.

Abstract:This paper considers the online routing, modulation, spectrum, and core allocation problem in elastic optical networks. Three algorithms are proposed to minimize the bandwidth blocking probability while taking into account the impact of interference from established lightpaths. These algorithms are based on a sequence of alternative paths, ordered in terms of increasing lengths, determined by Yen's algorithm. Each of the algorithms for the selected single or dual lightpath enforces the constraints of spectrum continuity, contiguity of the slots, and non-overlapping of the spectra with the established lightpaths, maximizes the number of bits per symbol, and selects a specific core on each link of the path. Simulation studies performed for two sample networks showed that the crosstalk has a significant impact on the bandwidth blocking probability. The best results were obtained by iterating over all paths and all slots, selecting the lightpath with the lowest average crosstalk per slot, consisting of the most loaded cores.

Abstract:Quantum-key-distribution (QKD) enabled optical networks can provide secure keys for different kinds of applications to ensure the high security of communication processes. As the number of wavelength channels in a single-core fiber is limited, space division multiplexing (SDM) has been considered to be a valuable technique to provide more wavelength resources, which solves the problem of insufficient channel capacity. Due to the rapid expansion of data volume, the SDM-based QKD network has been regarded as an important paradigm. At the same time, resource allocation in multi-core optical networks is a problem worthy of studying. In this work, four routing, core, and wavelength allocation (RCWA) algorithms are proposed in the multi-core optical network for quantum service requests and classical service requests, which are referred to as RCWA without perception (RCWA-WP), RCWA with crosstalk perception (RCWA-XTP), RCWA with spectrum perception (RCWA-SP), and RCWA with core perception (RCWA-CP). Simulations are carried out to evaluate the network performance in terms of blocking probability, key utilization, and average crosstalk intensity. The comparative results indicate that the RCWA-SP algorithm can improve network performance and reduce the blocking probability, while the RCWA-XTP algorithm can reduce inter-core crosstalk during transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the static routing, spectrum, and core assignment (RSCA) problem in spacedivision multiplexing (SDM)-based elastic optical networks (EONs) with multi-core fiber (MCF). In RSCA problems, it is a challenging task to control the inter-core interference, called inter-core crosstalk (XT), within an acceptable level and simultaneously maximize the spectrum utilization. We first consider XT in a worst interference scenario (i.e., XTunaware), which can simplify the RSCA problem. In this scenario, we formulate the RSCA problem using a nodearc- based integer linear programming (ILP) method in which the numbers of both variables and constraints are greatly reduced compared with previous ILP methods, thereby leading to a significant improvement in convergence efficiency. Then, we consider the XT strictly (i.e., XT-aware) and formulate the problem using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) method, which is an extension of the above node-arc-based ILP method. It is more suitable for different XT thresholds and/or geographically large networks, in that it has a higher degree of generalizability. Finally, we propose an XT-aware-based heuristic algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate that our heuristic algorithm achieves higher spectrum efficiency, higher degree of generalizability, and higher computational efficiency than the existing heuristic algorithm(s).
