Abstract:Based on a systematic approach to expand non-ideal eigenmodes as superposition of ideal eigenmodes, we develop a theoretical formalism to study mode coupling in perturbed fibers. The formalism explicitly yields the maximum energy-conversion ratios among ideal eigenmodes and the corresponding propagation lengths to reach the maximum conversion, and errors inherent to the underlying perturbative assumption can be estimated straightforwardly. Moreover, the formalism provides a simple way to divide the modes into smaller approximately-decoupled subsets, thus substantially simplifying the theoretical analysis and more directly catching the physical essence. By employing the formalism to analyze a ring fiber under perturbations of ellipticity and misalignment, we find that stability of the ideal eigenmodes is sensitive to the specific perturbation form, i.e., with some modes strongly affected by the ellipticity but not the misalignment, or vice versa. Furthermore, it is revealed that the EH11 and HE31 modes are strongly coupled under perturbation of ellipticity despite the relatively large effective-refractive-index difference, which suggests possible inadequacy of a widely adopted criterion against the coupling of EHν−1,p and HEν+1,p modes.

Abstract:We study the interaction between quasi-modes in dielectric cavities of stadium shape. We show that dependence of two coupled modes on the cavity deformation can be described by the coupled-level model, and extract complex coupling constant. Depending on the value of coupling constant we observe several kinds of quasi-mode evolution.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the coupling characteristics of a few-mode twin-core all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. We show that extrema in the coupling length, reversal of the ordering of supermodes, and complete decoupling can occur in high-order modes. Using significant differences in the coupling characteristics between different modes, we can separate degenerate mode pairs such as LP11a and LP11b, and LP21a and LP21b, as well as modes with the same azimuthal quantum number, e.g., LP01 and LP02. By setting a suitable photonic-crystal period, we can realize an optical fiber coupler with mode separation properties in the C-band. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. Abstract:In this paper, to accurately characterize the low inter-mode coupling of the weakly-coupled few mode fibers (FMFs), we propose a modified inter-mode coupling characterization method based on swept-wavelength interferometry measurement, in which an integral calculation approach is used to eliminate significant sources of error that may lead to underestimation of the power coupling coefficient. Using the proposed characterization method, a low-crosstalk ring-core fiber (RCF) with low mode dependent loss (MDL) and with single span length up to 100 km is experimentally measured to have low power coupling coefficients between high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode groups of below 30 dBkm over C band. The measured low coupling coefficients based on the proposed method are verified by the direct system power measurements, proving the feasibility and reliability of the proposed inter-mode coupling characterization method.

Abstract:Nearest-neighbor coupled-mode theory is a powerful framework to describe electromagnetic-wave propagation in multicore fibers but it lacks precision as the separation between cores decreases. We use abstract symmetries to study a ring of evenly distributed identical cores around a central core, a common configuration used in telecommunications and sensing. We find its normal modes and their effective propagation constants while including the effect of all high-order inter-core couplings. Finite-element simulations support our results to good agreement. Only two of these effective modes involve fields in all the cores. These two modes display opposite-sign phase configurations between the fields in the external cores and the central core. These two modes still appear in the limit where the external cores become a continuous ring. Our results might help improve predictions for crosstalk in telecommunications or precision in sensing applications.

Abstract:Nanomechanical and other mesoscopic vibrational systems typically have several nonlinearly coupled modes with different frequencies and with long lifetime. We consider the power spectrum of one of these modes. Thermal fluctuations of the modes nonlinearly coupled to it lead to fluctuations of the mode frequency and thus to the broadening of its spectrum. However, the coupling-induced broadening is partly masked by the spectral broadening due to the mode decay. We show that the mode coupling can be identified and characterized using the change of the spectrum by weak resonant driving. We develop a path-integral method of averaging over the non-Gaussian frequency fluctuations from nonresonant (dispersive) mode coupling. The shape of the driving-induced power spectrum depends on the interrelation between the coupling strength and the decay rates of the modes involved. The characteristic features of the spectrum are analyzed in the limiting cases. We also find the power spectrum of a driven mode where the mode has internal nonlinearity. Unexpectedly, the power spectra induced by the intra- and inter-mode nonlinearities are qualitatively different. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations.

Abstract:In the presence of loss and gain, the coupled mode equation on describing the mode hybridization of various waveguides or cavities, or cavities coupled to waveguides becomes intrinsically non-Hermitian. In such non-Hermitian waveguides, the standard coupled coupled mode theory fails. We generalize the coupled mode theory with a properly defined inner product based on reaction conservation. We apply our theory to the non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric waveguides, and obtain excellent agreement with results obtained by finite element fullwave simulations. The theory presented here is typically formulated in space to study coupling between waveguides, which can be transformed into time domain by proper reformulation to study coupling between non-Hermitian resonators. Our theory has the strength of studying non-Hermitian optical systems with inclusion of the full vector fields, thus is useful to study and design non-Hermitian devices that support asymmetric and even nonreciprocal light propagations

Abstract:In this paper, we give a general model for analysis of multimode Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) resonators coupled to multimode tapered fibers based on the coupled-mode theory. Such formulation takes into account the asymmetry of the taper-resonator coupling. Simulations for a microsphere show that the tapered fiber coupling mechanism induces cross-coupling between coherent orthonormal WGMs. We show that the degree of such cross-coupling depends basically on the fiber diameter, air-gap between the taper and resonator, intrinsic losses and eccentricity. The WGM cross-coupling affects the total transmission and spectral line-shape of the internal powers resulting in a controllable transformation of the line-shape to non-Lorentzian spectra. This analysis can be utilized to precisely determine the output and intra-cavity intensity of multimode microresonators, which is important in lasers, nonlinear optical signal generation and realization of optical delays.

Abstract:Standing-wave supermode microresonators that are created through the strong coupling between counter-propa-gating modes have emerged as versatile platforms for sensing and nonlinear optics.For example,these micro-resonators have shown potential in nanoparticle sizing and counting,as well as enhancing the single-photon optomechanical coupling rate of stimulated Brillouin scattering.However,it has been observed that the relation between the mode linewidth and on-resonance transmission of the split supermodes differs obviously from that of the non-split modes.This behavior is typically quantified by the coupling ideality(I),which remains inad-equately explored for the standing-wave supermodes.In this study,we theoretically and experimentally inves-tigate the coupling ideality of standing-wave supermodes in a commonly employed configuration involving a SiO2 microresonator side-coupled to a tapered fiber.Our findings demonstrate that,even with a single-mode tapered fiber,the coupling ideality of the standing-wave supermodes is limited to 0.5,due to the strong back-scattering-induced energy loss into the counter-propagating direction,resulting in an additional equivalent parasitic loss.While achieving a coupling ideality of 0.5 presents challenges for reaching over-coupled regimes,it offers a convenient approach for adjusting the total linewidth of the modes while maintaining critically-coupled conditions.

Abstract:We present experimental and numerical studies on principal modes in a multimode fiber with mode coupling. By applying external stress to the fiber and gradually adjusting the stress, we have realized a transition from weak to strong mode coupling, which corresponds to the transition from single scattering to multiple scattering in mode space. Our experiments show that principal modes have distinct spatial and spectral characteristic in the weak and strong mode coupling regimes. We also investigate the bandwidth of the principal modes, in particular, the dependence of the bandwidth on the delay time, and the effects of the mode-dependent loss. By analyzing the path-length distributions, we discover two distinct mechanisms that are responsible for the bandwidth of principal modes in weak and strong mode coupling regimes. Their interplay leads to a non-monotonic transition of the average principal mode bandwidth from weak to strong mode coupling. Taking into account the mode-dependent loss in the fiber, our numerical results are in qualitative agreement with our experimental observations. Our study paves the way for exploring potential applications of principal modes in communication, imaging and spectroscopy.

Abstract:We develop a model for the coupling of quasi-normal modes in open photonic systems consisting of two resonators. By expressing the modes of the coupled system as a linear combination of the modes of the individual particles, we obtain a generalized eigenvalue problem involving small size dense matrices. We apply this technique to dielectric rod dimmer of rectangular cross section for Transverse Electric (TE) polarization in a two-dimensional (2D) setup. The results of our model show excellent agreement with full-wave finite element simulations. We provide a convergence analysis, and a simplified model with a few modes to study the influence of the relative position of the two resonators. This model provides interesting physical insights on the coupling scheme at stake in such systems and pave the way for systematic and efficient design and optimization of resonances in more complicated systems, for applications including sensing, antennae and spectral filtering.

Abstract:We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:We derive a general theory of linear coupling and Kerr nonlinear coupling between modes of dielectric optical resonators from first principles. The treatment is not specific to a particular geometry or choice of mode basis, and can therefore be used as a foundation for describing any phenomenon resulting from any combination of linear coupling, scattering, and Kerr nonlinearity, such as bending and surface roughness losses, geometric backscattering, self- and cross-phase modulation, four-wave mixing, third-harmonic generation, and Kerr frequency comb generation. The theory is then applied to a translationally symmetric waveguide in order to calculate the evanescent coupling strength to the modes of a microresonator placed nearby, as well as the Kerr self- and cross-phase modulation terms between the modes of the resonator. This is then used to derive a dimensionless equation describing the symmetry-breaking dynamics of two counterpropagating modes of a loop resonator and prove that cross-phase modulation is exactly twice as strong as self-phase modulation only in the case that the two counterpropagating modes are otherwise identical. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.023517 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:A novel inter-mode crosstalk (IMXT) model of LPmn mode for weakly coupled few-mode multicore fiber is proposed based on the coupled mode theory (CMT) with bending and twisting perturbations. A universal expression of the mode coupling coefficient (MCC) between LPmn modes is derived. By employing this MCC, the universal semi-analytical model (USAM) of inter-core crosstalk (ICXT) can be applied to calculate the IMXT. Simulation results show that our model is generally consistent with previous theories when stochastic perturbations are absent. Moreover, our model can work effectively when stochastic perturbations are present, where former theories are not able to work properly. It has been theoretically found that the MCC has an intimate relationship with core pitch. Our model, based on the CMT, can provide physical characteristics in detail, which has not been reported clearly by former theories. In addition, our model is applicable to phase-matching and non-phase-matching regions of both real homogeneous and heterogeneous few-mode multicore fibers (FM-MCFs) with a wider range of applications.

Incident Light Influence on the Transmission of Coupled Ring Resonators

Abstract:The transmission matrix method is used to analyze the influence of incident light on coupled resonators. Two different types of incident light on the same coupled resonator geometry are shown to lead to different system transmission features. The EIT-like phenomenon occurs in the type I case with the transmission being symmetric around the zero-single-pass-phase-shift frequency. In the type II case the resonant frequency has a blue shift corresponding to the increasing coupling strength between the two ring resonators. Also, the critical-coupling-like condition exists in the type II configuration to maintain the zero-single pass-phase-shift frequency. The incident light, as well as the geometry, partially determine the mode interference in the coupled ring resonator system.
A new exceptional point condition for coupled microresonators with coupled mode theory in space

Abstract:We derive new exceptional point (EP) conditions of the coupled microring resonators using coupled mode theory in space, a more accurate approach than the commonly used coupled mode theory in time. Transmission spectra around EPs obtained from the two models have been compared on two material platforms, revealing non-negligible deviations. Our analysis provides a guide for accurately determining parameter sets of coupled microrings at EPs and deepens our understanding on parity-time-symmetric coupled resonators at EPs.
