Abstract:In general, a high-quality (Q) microresonator can accommodate abundant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with the mode number increasing with the dimensional sizes of the microresonator. Removing the unnecessary modes while reorganizing the remaining modes is of vital importance, which, however, has been proved challenging and usually results in a tradeoff with the Q of the microresonator. Here, an effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism is revealed underlying the generation of polygon and star modes in weakly perturbed tapered fiber-coupled lithium niobate whispering gallery microresonators. Experimentally, various polygon and star modes are observed in sequence within a single microresonator by tuning the excitation wavelength or varying the coupling position between a tapered fiber and the circular microresonator, which can be well reproduced with the theoretical model. The finding offers a ubiquitous solution for a broad range of applications requiring elaborate selection and organization of the high-Q WGMs. An effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism underlying the generation of polygon and star modes is demonstrated in a weakly perturbed lithium niobate microcavity. The various polygon and star mode signals are observed in sequence in a microcavity without the need for some external deformations, agreeing well with the theoretical model.image

Abstract:We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:Theoretical study of free space coupling to high-Q whispering gallery modes (WGMs) are presented in circular and deformed microcavities. Both analytical solutions and asymptotic formulas are derived for a circular cavity. The coupling efficiencies at different coupling regimes for cylindrical incoming wave are discussed, and the maximum efficiency is estimated for the practical Gaussian beam excitation. In the case of a deformed cavity, the coupling efficiency can be higher than the circular cavity if the excitation beam can match the intrinsic emission which can be tuned by adjusting the degree of deformation. Employing an abstract model of slightly deformed cavity, we find that the asymmetric and peak like line shapes instead of the Lorentz-shape dip are universal in transmission spectra due to multi-wave interference, and the coupling efficiency cannot be estimated from the absolute depth of the dip. Our results provide guidelines for free space coupling in experiments, suggesting that the high-Q asymmetric resonator cavities (ARCs) can be efficiently excited through free space which will stimulate further experiments and applications of WGMs based on free space coupling.

Abstract:With the coupled-mode theory, we analyzed the energy transmission between the microsphere cavity and waveguide system. and revealed the mode coupling strength in a bare microsphere coupled with a fiber taper theoretically and experimentally. In a practical taper-microsphere coupling system, the traveling wave clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) whispering gallery modes (WGMs) Should existed simultaneity. Those two modes are coupled in the microsphere cavity with a Coupling strength (beta). In experiment, the reflection spectra of the taper-microsphere system were investigated. By modifying various Coupling condition for microspheres, different groups of data were obtained from the spectra, and used as fitting data for coupling strength estimation. The theory will be valuable in evaluating the upper limit of quality factor (Q) of a microcavity basing oil the WGMs. Referring to the result and consequence of beta, it enables multiple ways to improve the Q-factor of a real cavity like annealing. Because the experiment device is compact and sensitive, such method is also promising for detecting the propagating loss in fiber instead of traditional way.

Abstract:Due to the lack of mode selection capability, single whispering-gallery-mode（WGM） lasing is a challenge to achieve. In bottle microresonators, the highly nondegenerated WGMs are spatially well-separated along the long-axis direction and provide mode selection according to their axial mode numbers. In this work, we use a loss-engineering approach to suppress the higher-order WGMs and demonstrate single-mode lasing emission in small polymer bottle microresonators. The fiber tapers are not only used to couple pump light into the bottle microresonators to excite the WGMs but also to bring optical losses that are induced from the diameter mismatch between fiber tapers and microresonators. By adjusting the coupling positions, the diameters of fiber tapers, and the coupling angles, single fundamental-mode lasing is efficiently generated with side-mode suppression factors over 15 dB. Our loss-engineering approach is convenient just by moving the fiber taper and may findpromising applications in miniature tunable single-mode lasers and sensors.

Abstract:We report a theoretical and experimental study of coupling between a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microdisk resonator and a fiber taper which exchange energies at two distinct regions. We observe an oscillatory behavior in the coupling strength as a function of the distance between the two coupling regions when a fiber taper is moved laterally above the resonator at fixed vertical distance. This oscillation is clearly seen in the linewidth of the resonance as well as in the on-resonance transmission. A theoretical model considering for two-point coupling successfully explains the experimental observations as being a result of the interference between the light fields coupled into and out of the resonator at two distinct regions and the light transmitted through the waveguide. Critical coupling in two-region coupling is a collective result of the coupling at two different coupling regions, and does not require critical coupling at both or at any one of the two coupling regions. This relaxes the conditions for achieving critical coupling in waveguide-resonator systems. The discovery of this previously unnoticed oscillatory behavior in two-region coupling between a WGM resonator and a waveguide will benefit both fundamental studies and practical applications based on WGM resonators.

Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. Abstract:The whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of optical resonators have prompted intensive research efforts due to their usefulness in the field of biological sensing, and their employment in nonlinear optics. While much information is available in the literature on numerical modeling of WGMs in microspheres, it remains a challenging task to be able to predict the emitted spectra of spherical microresonators. Here, we establish a customizable Finite- Difference Time-Domain (FDTD)-based approach to investigate the WGM spectrum of microspheres. The simulations are carried out in the vicinity of a dipole source rather than a typical plane-wave beam excitation, thus providing an effective analogue of the fluorescent dye or nanoparticle coatings used in experiment. The analysis of a single dipole source at different positions on the surface or inside a microsphere, serves to assess the relative efficiency of nearby radiating TE and TM modes, characterizing the profile of the spectrum. By varying the number, positions and alignments of the dipole sources, different excitation scenarios can be compared to analytic models, and to experimental results. The energy flux is collected via a nearby disk-shaped region. The resultant spectral profile shows a dependence on the configuration of the dipole sources. The power outcoupling can then be optimized for specific modes and wavelength regions. The development of such a computational tool can aid the preparation of optical sensors prior to fabrication, by preselecting desired the optical properties of the resonator.

Internalization of the Human Nicotinic Acid Receptor GPR109A Is Regulated by Gi, GRK2, and Arrestin3*

Abstract:Nicotinic acid (niacin) has been widely used as a favorable lipid-lowering drug for several decades, and the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR109A has been identified to be a receptor for niacin. Mechanistic investigations have shown that as a Gi-coupled receptor, GPR109A inhibits adenylate cyclase activity upon niacin activation, thereby inhibiting free fatty acid liberation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that regulate signaling and internalization of GPR109A remain largely unknown. To further characterize GPR109A internalization, we made a construct to express GPR109A fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) at its carboxyl-terminal end. In stable GPR109A-EGFP-expressing HEK-293 cells, GPR109A-EGFP was mainly localized at the plasma membrane and was rapidly internalized in a dose- and time-dependent manner upon agonist stimulation. GPR109A internalization was completely blocked by hypertonic sucrose, indicating that GPR109A internalizes via the clathrin-coated pit pathway. Further investigation demonstrated that internalized GPR109A was recycled to the cell surface after the removal of agonist, and recycling of the internalized receptors was not blocked by treatment with acidotropic agents, NH4Cl and monensin. Pertussis toxin pretreatment not only inhibited forskolin-induced cAMP accumulation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization; it also significantly attenuated agonist-promoted GPR109A internalization. Moreover, RNA interference experiments showed that knockdown of GRK2 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2) and arrestin3 expression significantly impaired receptor internalization. Taken together, these results indicate that the agonist-induced internalization of GPR109A receptors is regulated by GRK2 and arrestin3 in a pertussis toxin-sensitive manner and that internalized receptor recycling is independent of endosomal acidification.

Abstract:Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circular resonators are investigated. Conformal transformation is used to transform circular resonators to more simplified structures. The principle of transverse resonance is utilized to calculate the resonant frequencies. Transmission line theory is applied to calculate the fields of electromagnetic waves. The resonant frequencies and field distributions in different high-Q resonators, including small resonators of several micrometers and large resonators of several millimeters in diameters, are investigated. The method provides a more efficient way to analyze the devices incorporating circular resonators.

Abstract:A two-dimensional tapered fiber core mimicking a commonly used tapered fiber coupler is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a piece of single-mode fiber (SMF) for whispering gallery mode (WGM) excitation. Tapering the fiber core with femtosecond laser ablation can simultaneously enhance the evanescent field and decrease the effective refractive index of the core mode, which lowers the phase mismatch between the core mode and the WGM in a spherical cavity with a diameter less than the fiber cladding radius. Experimental results show that symmetric Lorentzian dip with a quality factor (Q-factor) of $3.6 imes 10 ^{3}$ and asymmetric Fano-like lineshape can be achieved. Such a tapered fiber core provides an effective coupling method for a single WGM based photonic device or WGM array-based lab in-fiber due to its inherent compatibility with fiber optic hardware, high integration, and robustness.

Abstract:Waveguide-coupled optical resonators have played an important role in a wide range of applications including optical communication, sensing, nonlinear optics, slow/fast light, and cavity QED. In such a system, the coupling regimes strongly affect the resonance feature in the light transmission spectra, and hence the performance and outcomes of the applications. Therefore it is crucial to control the coupling between the waveguide and the microresonator. In this work, we investigated a fiber-taper coupled whispering-gallery-mode microresonator system, in which the coupling regime is traditionally controlled by adjusting the distance between the resonator and the fiber-taper mechanically. We propose and experimentally demonstrate that by utilizing Raman gain one can achieve on-demand control of the coupling regime without any mechanical movement in the resonator system. Particularly, the application of Raman gain is accompanied by Q enhancement. We also show that with the help of Raman gain control, the transitions between various coupling regimes can affect the light transmission spectra so as to provide better resolvability and signal amplification. This all-optical approach is also suitable for monolithically integrated and packaged waveguide-resonator systems, whose coupling regime is fixed at the time of manufacturing. It provides an effective route to control the light transmission in a waveguide-couple resonator system without mechanically moving individual optical components.

Abstract:A complete integrated table-top facility for the study of high-$Q$ Whispering Gallery Modes in solid and liquid micro-cavities is described, with emphasis on the in situ fabrication of reliable tapered fibers of sub-micron waist sizes for coupling light into time-dependent liquid micro-cavities. The experimental parameters have been chosen to get nearly adiabatic tapers, with their waist size consistent with the theoretical model. The oscillations in the transmitted power during fiber tapering are monitored to check the coupling of higher order modes and identify the point when the fiber is suitable for pure single mode coupling. The fabricated tapered fibers have greater than 85% transmission on the average and very good polarization fidelity. The tapered fibers have been used for efficiently exciting and detecting WGMs of $Q\sim10^7$ in silica microspheres and of $Q$ up to $7\times10^7$ in microdrops of silicone oils.

Abstract:A tapered-optical fiber tip coupler for the excitation of capillary whispering gallery modes (WGMs) is proposed. The phase matching theory and spectral features are analyzed. The light transmission characteristics and cross-sectional mode fields of the coupler are simulated. The impact of fabrication tolerance on excited WGM is studied, and the structure is fabricated based on the simulation results. It has been experimentally verified that this structure can excite the WGM resonance of capillaries of various sizes, with the highest quality factor (Q factor) of 3.6×103 and refractive index sensitivity of 22.28 nm/RIU. The resonant coupler is not fragile, large fabrication tolerance, and can excite WGM in capillaries of different sizes, which can provide a new means of detection in the field of capillary biochemical sensing.

Abstract:The character of the modal coupling strength beta between clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) whispering gallery modes (WGMs) represents an intrinsic property of a microsphere cavity, which is an important factor for the application of both micro-laser and cavity QED. Depending on a fibre taper coupled microsphere with quality factor larger than 107, modal coupling has been observed, while reflection spectra have been captured to derive the practical modal coupling strength. Upon obtaining results the modal coupling strength is confirmed to be a constant determined only by a microcavity and modes under excitation. This measurement system and results enable ways not only to acquire the material character of a microcavity, but also to analyse microsphere-based cavity QED research.
Fano Resonance in Whispering Gallery Photonic Microcavities

Abstract:Fano resonances, sometimes behaving like electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT)-like resonances in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities are attracting much attention due to the important applications in high-sensitivity biosensing, optical switch, and slow light. In this paper, Fano resonances in several WGM systems are reported, including in a single WGM photonic microcavity and in coupled WGM microcavities. Specifically, in a single WGM microcavity system, Fano or EIT-like resonances in both polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated silica microtoroid and bare silica microtoroid are experimentally investigated. In coupled microcavity system, we report a theoretical study of EIT-like resonance in an array of microcavities indirectly coupled through a parallel waveguides system. Finally, we experimentally investigate the Fano resonance in two microcavities indirectly coupled via a single fiber taper.

Abstract:Here we propose and demonstrate a new type of microsphere whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator with microsphere-microsphere coupling. The coupler consists of a microsphere attached to a single mode fiber (SMF) tip by use of UV adhesive. The microsphere-microsphere coupling system is robust, compact in size, easy in fabrication and stable in operation and has good Q-factor of 4.72×10 3 . The WGM resonator developed in this work is also explored for vibration measurement.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transmission spectrum of a coupled resonator structure in which a low-Q microdisk and a high-Q microtoroid indirectly interact with each other mediated by a fiber taper. Asymmetric Fano resonances were observed and could be controlled to change periodically by adjusting the distance between the two microresonators. It is revealed that the Fano resonance originates from the coupling of the two modes belonging to the two microresonators. The observed period of distance change is around 8 μm, which shows good agreement with the theoretical prediction by the beat of multiple propagating modes in the fiber taper.

Abstract:A whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator based on a capillary is presented, which consists of a tapered capillary with thick wall and an inserted microsphere, fusion spliced using conical fusing mode with single mode fiber at both of its ends. The device is featured with alignment-free coupling of light traveling in the capillary wall into the microsphere, high robustness due to the thick capillary wall, simple in fabrication, low in cost and good operation stability, which make it exhibit broad application prospects in the field of photonics.
