Abstract:A silicon-based on-chip add-drop optical filter is realized for the wavelength-band of 2 mu m by integrating a multimode waveguide grating (MWG) and a pair of two-channel mode (de)multiplexers. The realized add-drop optical filter has low loss and high sidelobe suppression ratio in a broad band, achieved by optimizing the corrugation depth, the apodization strength, as well as the grating length. The measurement results agree very well with the theoretical simulation results. The demonstrated similar to 100 mu m-long MWG has a large 0.5 dB bandwidth of 6 similar to 26 nm and a sidelobe suppression ratio of 22 similar to 27 dB. The thermal-tunability of the present optical filter is also demonstrated experimentally, and the measured tuning efficiency is about 0.16 nm/mW.

Abstract:A narrow-band add-drop filter based on an anti-symmetric cladding-modulated multimode Bragg grating (CMMBG) is demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The CMMBG is implemented by using periodic placements of silicon cubes along a multimode waveguide. The coupling strength is varied by changing the distance between the cubes and the multimode waveguide. An unlimited free-spectral range (FSR) and weak coupling strengths for TE0-TE1 modes conversion are achieved. Sidewall-misalignment-modulation (SMM) apodization is applied to achieve a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). The experimental results show that the designed filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.8 nm, an insertion loss of 0.65 dB and a SLSR of 20.3 dB. The devices with different grating duty cycles and multimode waveguide widths were also fabricated and analyzed. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as WDM channel filters.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of a two-mode silicon add-drop filter, which is based on multimode grating-assisted contra-directional couplers. The mode conversions between two asymmetry strip waveguides are realized by using spatially periodic corrugations in one side wall of a multimode waveguide at the phase-match condition. Experimental results show that the fundamental mode of a single-mode waveguide is successfully coupled to the first two modes of the multimode waveguide in the opposite direction. The corresponding mode conversion bandwidths and extinction ratios are also measured. The demonstrated add-drop filter may find their applications in a hybrid multiplexing system by combing wavelength-division multiplexing technology and mode-division multiplexing technology for on-chip optical interconnect.

Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:A lateral-apodized add-drop filter is demonstrated in a multimode asymmetric waveguide Bragg grating. This design utilizes two individual superposed gratings with the same sidewall corrugation depth. The strong side lobes of the grating filter are efficiently suppressed by mapping the target apodization profile into lateral shifts between the periods of the two gratings. Compared with other apodized technology, this device is easier to be realized. Experimental results show that the side-lobes suppression ratio can reach 18.5 dB, and a bandwidth of 9.5 nm is achieved by a large corrugation width of 150 nm. The insertion loss at the drop port is only 0.8 dB, and the extinction ratio is up to 24 dB at the through port. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A narrow-hand silicon photonic add-drop filter is demonstrated by using phase-modulated grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The apodization coupling is achieved by modulating the phase of one grating in a contra-DC, while keeping the other grating uniform. As the local effective index of the gratings remains almost unchanged, the designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). To obtain a narrow bandwidth, weak coupling is designed. Single-stage and dual-stage filtering are both studied. The experimental results show that single-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.9 nm and an SLSR of 18 dB. Dual-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm and an SLSR of 23 dB. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as wavelength-division-multiplexed channel filters.

Abstract:A silicon photonic wire filter based on an asymmetric side-wall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. The operating principle is based on the contra-directional coupling between the transverse electric fundamental (TE0) and first-order (TE1) modes, which is enabled by the asymmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations. An asymmetric Y-junction is cascaded at the input port of the filter so as to drop the Bragg reflection. Compared with conventional Bragg grating-based filters, this device eliminates the back reflection at the input port and the 6 dB inherent insertion loss at the drop port; moreover, a narrow 3 dB bandwidth can be obtained with a large critical dimension as a result of the weak coupling strength between the TE0 and TE1 modes inside the multimode waveguide. Experimental results show that a bandwidth of similar to 2.8 nm is achieved by a large corrugation width of 150 nm. The insertion loss at the drop port is -2.1 dB, and the extinction ratio is -33 dB at the through port. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:On-chip photonic filters are one of the most important elements for spectrum manipulation in various optical systems, including wavelength-division multiplexing and spectrum analysis. Currently, it is still very challenging to achieve scalable photonic filters with flexibly-designed bandwidths, low excess losses, flat tops, and ultra-wide free-spectral ranges (FSRs). Here an unprecedented silicon photonic filter is proposed and demonstrated with high performances by using apodised antisymmetric multimode subwavelength gratings (MSWGs) structures. For the present silicon photonic filter, the MSWGs enable the index engineering in the Bragg lattice, which easily manipulates the coupling coefficient, the local effective index, and the mode profile flexibly. As a result, the strong side lobes of the grating filter are efficiently suppressed, while the bandwidth can be designed flexibly and the FSR is free. The fabricated silicon photonic filter is FSR-free and shows a low excess loss of <1 dB and a high sidelobe suppression ratio of 20-40 dB.

Abstract:A high-performance silicon nitride based narrow-band multimode waveguide Bragg grating (NBMWBG) add-drop optical filter with high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR), low insertion loss and low temperature sensitivity is demonstrated. The complementary lateral-misalignment modulation apodization is introduced to improve the performance of the proposed NBMWBG. Multiple NBMWBGs are cascaded using multiple single-mode interconnected waveguides. The dual-stage and three-stage NBMWBGs are also fabricated and tested. The measured insertion losses, 3-dB bandwidths and SLSRs of single-stage, dual-stage and three-stage NBMWBGs are 0.5 dB, 1 dB and 1.2 dB, 2.3 nm, 2 nm and 1.8 nm, 27.2 dB, 45 dB and 63 dB, respectively. The proposed NBMWBG exhibits a low thermal tuning efficiency of 625 mW/nm. The high SLSR of the three-stage NBMWBG suggests its potential for application in photonic integrated circuits.
Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer with Hexagonal-Hole Lattice PC Slab Waveguides

Abstract:We report on a channel drop filter with a mode gap in the propagating mode of a photonic crystal slab that was fabricated on silicon on an insulator wafer. The results, simulated with the 3-dimensional finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave methods, demonstrated that an index-guiding mode for the line defect waveguide of a photonic crystal slab has a band gap at wave vector k = 0.5 for a mainly TM-like light-wave. The mode gap works as a distributed Bragg grating reflector that propagates the light-wave through the line defect waveguide, and can be used as an optical filter. The filter bandwidth was varied from 1-8 nm with an r/a (r: hole radius, a: lattice constant) variation around the wavelength range of 1550-1600 nm. We fabricated a Bragg reflector with a photonic crystal line-defect waveguide and Si-channel waveguides and by measuring the transmittance spectrum found that the Bragg reflector caused abrupt dips in transmittance. These experimental results are consistent with the results of the theoretical analysis described above. Utilizing the Bragg reflector, we fabricated channel dropping filters with photonic crystal slabs connected between channel waveguides and demonstrated their transmittance characteristics. They were highly drop efficient, with a flattop drop-out spectrum at a wavelength of 1.56 μm and a drop bandwidth of 5.8 nm. Results showed that an optical adddrop multiplexer with a 2-D photonic crystal will be available for application in WDM devices for photonic networks and for LSIs in the near future.

Abstract:We propose an add-drop filter with an unlimited free spectral range (FSR). The device is based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers with silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguides. The intrawaveguide coupling is significantly diminished by distancing the periodically structured corrugated waveguide away from the straight input waveguide. Based on this asymmetric structure, calculated results show that the peak reflectivity of the intrawaveguide coupling is lower than 0.1 dB, while that of the contradirectional coupling is higher than 20 dB. An experimental result of 1.8 dB for the intrawaveguide coupling is obtained. A narrow drop-port bandwidth of 0.8 nm is also achieved experimentally. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive optical filter is proposed and demonstrated with 340-nm-thick silicon photonic waveguides. It consists of a polarization-insensitive mode (de)multiplexer and a polarization-insensitive multimode waveguide grating (MWG). The MWG is designed optimally according to the polarization-insensitive phase-matching condition. Meanwhile, longitudinal apodization is introduced in the MWG to suppress the sidelobes. For the fabricated silicon photonic filter based on a single stage of MWG, the 1-dB bandwidth as large as ∼13 nm, the excess loss is ∼1 dB and the sidelobe suppression ratio is about 10 dB for both polarizations. In particular, the performance is improved greatly by introducing more than one MWGs in cascade, and the fabricated device has a sidelobe suppression ratio as high as >30 dB.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive optical filter based on silicon and silicon nitride film is demonstrated. The lateral-shift apodization is introduced to suppress the sidelobes. The fabricated optical filter shows polarization-insensitive performances with large 3dB-bandwidths of 3.5-5.1 nm, low losses of 1.72-1 dB, decent SLSRs of 18.5-19.1 dB for both polarizations.

Abstract:Reconfigurable optical add-drop filters in future intelligent and software controllable wavelength division multiplexing networks should support hitless wavelength switching and gridless bandwidth tuning. The hitless switching implies that the central wavelength of one channel can be shifted without disturbing data transmissions of other channels, while the gridless tuning means that the filter bandwidth can be adjusted continuously. Despite a lot of efforts, very few integrated optical filters simultaneously support the hitless switching of central wavelength and the gridless tuning of bandwidth. In this work, we demonstrate a hitless add-drop filter with gridless bandwidth tunability on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The filter comprises the two identical multimode anti-symmetric waveguide Bragg gratings (MASWBG) which are connected to a loop. The phase apodization technique is utilized to weaken the intrinsic sidelobe interference of grating-based devices. By sequentially manipulating central wavelengths of the two MASWBGs with the thermo-optical effect, we can reconfigure the spectral response of the filter gridlessly and hitlessly. Specifically, the central wavelength of the device is shifted by 14.5 nm, while its 3 dB bandwidth is tuned from 0.2 nm to 2.4 nm. The dropping loss and the sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR) are dependent on the bandwidth selected. Measured variation ranges of dropping loss and SLSR are from -1.2 dB to -2.5 dB and from 12.8 dB to 21.4 dB, respectively. The hitless wavelength switching is verified by a data transmission measurement at a bit rate of 25 Gbps.

Abstract:Ultracompact channel add-drop filter utilizing a single nanobeam photonic crystal cavity is analyzed, designed, and demonstrated. Anti-symmetric multimode periodic waveguide structure is employed to implement mode conversion and thus produce degenerate resonant states in the involved nanobeam cavity. Theoretical analysis results indicate that the inter-modal conversion coefficient and the waveguide-cavity coupling coefficient have significant effects on the lineshape of the filter. By carefully engineering the structure of the multimode nanobeam cavity and its side-coupled configuration, we successfully achieve an ultracompact add-drop filter with device area around 20 μm2. The experimental results on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform show that the insertion losses of drop port, the crosstalk of add port of the fabricated filter are -1.1 dB and -14.7 dB, respectively. The modal volume of the involved nanobeam cavity are small as 1.2(λ/n) 3 , indicating huge potentials in developing low-power consumption tunable devices for future very large scale integration (VLSI) photonic applications.

Abstract:A silicon-based polarization-insensitive optical filter is proposed and demonstrated. For the present on-chip polarization-insensitive optical filter, there is a dual-polarization mode (de)multiplexer, a TE-type multimode waveguide grating (MWG) with triangular corrugations and a TM-type MWG with rectangular corrugations. Here the triangular corrugations are introduced to reduce the undesired reflection and suppress the Fabry-Parot resonance. Furthermore, lateral-shift apodization is introduced for both two types of MWGs to suppress the sidelobes. For the fabricated device, the measured 3 dB-bandwidth is as large as ∼11 nm and the excess loss is ∼1.5 dB for both polarizations, while the sidelobe suppression ratios are 23 dB and 17 dB for TE and TM polarizations, respectively.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable optical add-drop multiplexer based on silicon photonic wire waveguides with Bragg-grating-reflectors was demonstrated by tuning the dropping wavelength through thermooptic effect. A 6.6-nm dropping wavelength shift was obtained at a 0.82-W heating power. For the device that is presently polarization-dependent, the 3-dB channel-dropping bandwidth was 0.4 nm and the extinction ratio at the dropping wavelength for port THROUGH was better than 17 dB for assuming 1.6-nm wavelength spacing dense wavelength-division multiplexing. The average tuning speed was about 200 mu s.

Abstract:A broadband tunable silicon filter has been demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. The device is based on the loop of multimode anti-symmetric waveguide Bragg grating. A wide bandwidth tunability about 1.455 THz (0.117-1.572 THz) is achieved. The device, functions like a ring, can realize the bandwidth tunable of the drop port and the through port. And, its feature has simultaneous wavelength tuning and no free space ranges limitation. A high out-of-band contrast of 30 dB is achieved with a bandwidth of 1.572 THz (Δλ = 13 nm). The out-of-band contrast is 18 dB at the minimum bandwidth 0.117 THz (Δλ = 1.0 nm).
