Sensors and Actuators A Physical
Abstract:Microwave (MW), with its selective heating, penetration, and medium heating properties, has become a very promising non-contact driving method in the medical and engineering fields. Among numerous MW actuators, high-power density shape memory alloy (SMA) springs combined with flexible passive short wires can form a soft MW actuator with simple structure, rapid prototyping, and fast response speed, whose MW reception characteristics depend on the wire shape. We propose three wire configurations for actuators, including single wire, double wire, and loop wire, and characterize their response rate, resonant length, blocking force, and equivalent antenna models. We then demonstrate its dynamic response through MW modulation. Through experiments, we have found that the characteristics of single-wire, double-wire, and loop-wire actuators, including directionality and resonant length, are equivalent to monopole, dipole, and large loop antennas, respectively. Within the range of medical MW power (43 W), the response time of all configurations of actuators is within 10 s. We also evaluated the effect of the gain of the transmitting antenna on the driving effect of the actuator. For transmitting antennas, the time-average power flow should be the primary indicator of driving, rather than directionality. Our research provides a new design space for miniaturized MW-driven soft actuators and a reference for their application in robots.
