Abstract:Electrochemical ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) is a promising approach for ammonia conversion for its environmental benign and energy-saving features. Nitrite is an important member of the AOR pathway and plays a key role in many biological and industrial processes. To maximize the nitrite production efficiency, it is essential to design stable AOR electrocatalysts which can afford fast electron transfer and high partial current density. Herein, we present a CuNi nano-alloy by introducing Ni into the Cu lattice via a simple electrodeposition method. This CuNi nano-alloy strategy effectively modulates the charge distribution of Cu atoms and reduces the work function of the AOR electrocatalyst, resulting in enhanced electron transport properties as well as increased active sites. As a result, up to 95 % NH4+ conversion rate with a cumulative NO2 concentration of 3.3 g L-1 has been achieved on the Cu8Ni2 alloy catalysts at 1.6 V vs. RHE for 12 h. Significantly, the Cu8Ni2 alloy catalysts can perform stably for 50 h, demonstrating excellent durability for electrocatalytic AOR. Thus, this study provides an efficient, stable, and highly feasible Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst for the selective and high-rate electrochemical AOR to produce nitrite.

Abstract:Abstract Most current research is devoted to electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction for ammonia synthesis under alkaline/neutral media while the investigation of nitrate reduction under acidic conditions is rarely reported. In this work, we demonstrate the potential of TiO 2 nanosheet with intrinsically poor hydrogen-evolution activity for selective and rapid nitrate reduction to ammonia under acidic conditions. Hybridized with iron phthalocyanine, the resulting catalyst displays remarkably improved efficiency toward ammonia formation owing to the enhanced nitrate adsorption, suppressed hydrogen evolution and lowered energy barrier for the rate-determining step. Then, an alkaline-acid hybrid Zn-nitrate battery was developed with high open-circuit voltage of 1.99 V and power density of 91.4 mW cm –2 . Further, the environmental sulfur recovery can be powered by above hybrid battery and the hydrazine-nitrate fuel cell can be developed for simultaneously hydrazine/nitrate conversion and electricity generation. This work demonstrates the attractive potential of acidic nitrate reduction for ammonia electrosynthesis and broadens the field of energy conversion.

Optimized Intermediates Adsorption Configuration on Co-Doped Fe2P@NiP2 Heterojunction Interface for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrate-To-Ammonia Conversion

Abstract:The extraction of ammonia (NH3) through electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 -RR) represents a sustainable avenue in NH3 generation and utilization. However, the catalytic efficiency of the NO3 -RR is hindered by the sluggish kinetics. This study first theoretically found that phosphide-based heterostructure can alter the adsorption structure of intermediates in the nitrate-to-ammonia process, thereby achieving precise regulation of the energy barrier in the rate-determining step. Based on theoretical design, a novel Co-doped Fe2P@NiP2 heterojunction catalyst is successfully synthesized, which deliver a notable NH3 yield rate of 0.395 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.7 V versus RHE, as well as a remarkable ammonia Faraday efficiency of 97.2% at -0.6 V versus RHE. Experimental and theoretical results further confirm that redistributing electrons and shifting the center of the d-band upwards through interfacial doping modulate intermediates adsorption strength and inhibition of hydrogen evolution, leading to excellent performance in NO3 --to-NH3. Further integrating the Co-Fe2P@NiP2 catalyst into a Zn-nitrate battery exhibits a substantial voltage output of 1.49 V and a commendable power density of 13.2 mW cm-2. The heteroatom-doped heterojunction strategy provides a versatile route for developing advanced catalysts, thereby broadening the horizons of electrocatalytic methodologies for nitrate reduction and ammonia synthesis.
p-d Orbital Hybridization in Ag-based Electrocatalysts for Enhanced Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Abstract:Considering the substantial role of ammonia, developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for nitrate-to-ammonia conversion has attracted increasing interest. Herein, we proposed a feasible strategy of p-d orbital hybridization via doping p-block metals in an Ag host, which drastically promotes the performance of nitrate adsorption and disassociation. Typically, a Sn-doped Ag catalyst (SnAg) delivers a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.5±1.85 % for NH3 at -0.4 V vs. RHE and reaches the highest NH3 yield rate to 482.3±14.1 mg h-1 mgcat. -1. In a flow cell, the SnAg catalyst achieves a FE of 90.2 % at an ampere-level current density of 1.1 A cm-2 with an NH3 yield of 78.6 mg h-1 cm-2, during which NH3 can be further extracted to prepare struvite as high-quality fertilizer. A mechanistic study reveals that a strong p-d orbital hybridization effect in SnAg is beneficial for nitrite deoxygenation, a rate-determining step for NH3 synthesis, which as a general principle, can be further extended to Bi- and In-doped Ag catalysts. Moreover, when integrated into a Zn-nitrate battery, such a SnAg cathode contributes to a superior energy density of 639 Wh L-1, high power density of 18.1 mW cm-2, and continuous NH3 production.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrite (NO-2) reduction can produce value-added ammonia (NH3) and simultaneously eliminate NO-2 pollutants in surface water and underground water. However, the complicated six-electron NO-2 reduction reaction (NO2RR) needs efficient electrocatalysts with high selectivity. Herein, we report that Ni-doped TiO2 nanoribbon array on titanium plate (Ni-TiO2/TP) acts as a high-active NO2RR electrocatalyst with a large NH3 yield of 380.27 mmol/h/cm2 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 94.89%, superior to TiO2/TP. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ni doping can enhance the intrinsic electrical conductivity and optimize the adsorptive free energy of intermediates for high NO2--to-NH3 selectivity.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:The Cu─CoO/Co(OH)2 doped core/shell structures obtained by in situ electrochemical activation exhibit outstanding performance in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia. Combining the in situ spectroscopic characterizations with theoretical calculations, it is illustrated that core/shell configuration and Cu dopants can accelerate electron transfer and enhance the adsorption of key intermediates. The catalysts can also serve as the cathode for high‐performing Zn−NO3− batteries. The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) presents an environmentally friendly approach for efficient NO3− pollutant removal and ammonia (NH3) production, compared to the conventional Haber–Bosch approach. While core/shell engineering has demonstrated its potential in enhancing NO3−RR performance, significant synthetic challenges and limited shell layer modification capabilities impede the exploration of high‐performance NO3−RR core/shell catalysts. Herein, CuCoO/Co(OH)2 core/shell structure via in situ electrochemical activation is synthesized. The catalyst delivers a maximum NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.7% at −0.5 VRHE with excellent durability and selectivity for NH3 over a wide range of potentials in NO3−RR, surpassing the electrocatalytic performance of both undoped shell and core components. The outstanding performance Cu─CoO/Co(OH)2 is ascribed to the enhanced charge transfer, stabilization of key reaction intermediates, and regulation of hydrogen adsorption over Cu‐doped core/shell structure. Furthermore, the assembled Zn−NO3− battery device attains a peak current density exceeding 32 mA cm−2 and an NH3 yield of up to 145.4 μmol h−1 cm−2. The work offers a novel core/shell engineering strategy in electrocatalytic NO3−RR and sheds light on the doping effects on the electrochemical NH3 synthesis.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction reaction (NITRR) to synthesize ammonia (NH3) synthesis offers a promising method for both pollution abatement and chemical production. However, the sluggish multi-electron/proton-involved steps limit ammonia selectivity and yield. Herein, we loaded PdCu nanoparticles (PdCu NPs) onto defective TiO2 to regulate the localized electron density for selective NH3 synthesis. Our results show a significant increase in NH3 yield and selectivity (112.0 to 322.7 μmol cm-2 h-1 and 34.6 to 80.1%, respectively), induced by the introduction of PdCu NPs. Importantly, in-situ and operando investigations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, reveal that PdCu NPs enhance the localized electron density at oxygen vacancies. This regulated electron density suppresses N-N coupling and accelerates N-H bonding processes, thus modulating NH3 selectivity. This unique insight based on localized electron density control provides a rational design strategy for metal-defect support catalysts in ammonia production using electrochemical processes.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3‐RR) to ammonia (NH3) offers a promising alternative approach for NH3 production and nitrate‐based voltaic cells which can deliver both electricity and NH3 as products, are also highly attractive. However, nitrate‐to‐NH3 conversion involves a proton‐assisted multiple‐electron transfer process with considerable kinetic barrier, underlying the need for efficient catalysts for the NO3–RR. A Zn‐nitrate battery is reported to enable a “killing three birds with one stone” strategy for energy supply, ammonia production and removal of pollutants with the iron doped nickel phosphide (Fe/Ni2P) as a NO3–RR catalyst electrode. Iron doping induces a downshift of the d‐band center of Ni atoms to the Fermi level, allowing the optimization of Gibbs free energies for reaction intermediates. The Fe/Ni2P catalyst exhibits 94.3% NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) and nearly 100% nitrate conversion efficiency at –0.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Further applying this highly efficient NO3–RR electrocatalyst as the cathode material, a novel Zn‐nitrate battery exhibits a power density of 3.25 mW cm–2 and a FE of 85.0% for NH3 production. This work enriches the application of Zn‐based batteries in the field of electrocatalysis and highlights the promise of bimetal phosphide for the NO3–RR. A Zn‐nitrate battery is reported to enable a “killing three birds with one stone” strategy for energy supply, ammonia production, and removal of pollutants with an iron doped nickel phosphide catalyst cathode. This battery system exhibits a power density of 3.25 mW cm−2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 85.0% for nitrate reduction to ammonia.

Abstract:Synthesis of green ammonia (NH3 ) via electrolysis of nitric oxide (NO) is extraordinarily sustainable, but multielectron/proton-involved hydrogenation steps as well as low concentrations of NO can lead to poor activities and selectivities of electrocatalysts. Herein, it is reported that oxygen-defective TiO2 nanoarray supported on Ti plate (TiO2- x /TP) behaves as an efficient catalyst for NO reduction to NH3 . In 0.2 m phosphate-buffered electrolyte, such TiO2- x /TP shows competitive electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis activity with a maximum NH3 yield of 1233.2 µg h-1 cm-2 and Faradaic efficiency of 92.5%. Density functional theory calculations further thermodynamically faster NO deoxygenation and protonation processes on TiO2- x (101) compared to perfect TiO2 (101). And the low energy barrier of 0.7 eV on TiO2- x (101) for the potential-determining step further highlights the greatly improved intrinsic activity. In addition, a Zn-NO battery is fabricated with TiO2- x /TP and Zn plate to obtain an NH3 yield of 241.7 µg h-1 cm-2 while providing a peak power density of 0.84 mW cm-2 .

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO2-) can satisfy the necessity for NO2- contaminant removal and deliver a sustainable pathway for ammonia (NH3) generation. Its practical application yet requires highly efficient electrocatalysts to boost NH3 yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE). In this study, CoP nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanoribbon array on Ti plate (CoP@TiO2/TP) is verified as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the selective reduction of NO2- to NH3. When measured in 0.1 M NaOH with NO2-, the freestanding CoP@TiO2/TP electrode delivers a large NH3 yield of 849.57 μmol h-1 cm-2 and a high FE of 97.01% with good stability. Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is considered as a promising strategy to degrade nitrate-containing wastewater and synthesize recyclable ammonia at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. In this work, the copper oxides-derived nano-polycrystalline Cu (NPC Cu) was integrated with Ti3+-self-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTA) to fabricate the NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA. Ti3+-self-doped TiO2 NTAs and the NPC Cu facilitate electron transfer and mass transportation and create abundant active sites. The unique nanostructure in which Cu nano-polycrystals interlace with the TiO2 nanotube accelerates the electron transfer from the substrate to surface NPC Cu. The density functional theory calculations confirm that the built-in electric field between Cu and TiO2 improves the adsorption characteristic of the NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA, thereby converting the endothermic NO3- adsorption step into an exothermic process. Therefore, the high NO3- conversion of 98.97%, the Faradic efficiency of 95.59%, and the ammonia production yield of 0.81 mg cm-2 h-1 are achieved at -0.45 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM NaNO3 (140 mg L-1)-0.1 M Na2SO4. This well-designed NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA as an effective electrocatalyst for the 8e- NO3RR possesses promising potential in the applications of ammonia production.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3RR), a widespread water pollutant, to high-valued ammonia is encouraging for sustainable artificial nutrient recycling and environmental-friendly pollution management. However, the limited available catalytic active sites and competitive hydrogen evolution make the catalytic performance still unsatisfactory. In this work, interfacial defect engineering via single atom doping was conducted to achieve highly efficient electrocatalytic NO3RR. Upon introduction of isolated Fe atoms, abundant oxygen vacancies are generated over atomic interface of TiO2, and the induced charge redistribution triggers the formation of considerable active sites for nitrate reduction, which plays a crucial role in inhibiting the proton reduction and promoting the adsorption and activation of nitrate. As expected, single atom Fe modified TiO2 exhibits a maximum ammonia yield rate of 137.3 mg h-1 mgcat.-1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 92.3% at -1.4 V (vs RHE), which are among the best of all the reported values yet. This work provides valuable insights into the exploration of highly efficient electrocatalysts toward nitrate reduction through the heteroatom doping and defect engineering over atomic interface.
Ru Doped NiMoO4 Nanoarray As a High-Efficiency Electrocatalyst for Nitrite Reduction to Ammonia.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to recyclable ammonia (NH3) is essential to maintain nitrogen balance and meet growing energy requirements. Herein, we report that Ru doped honeycomb NiMoO4 nanosheet with copious oxygen vacancies grown on nickel foam substrate has been prepared by a facile hydrothermal synthesis and immersion process, which can act as an efficient electrocatalyst for NH3 synthesis by reduction of nitrite. By optimizing the concentration of RuCl3 solution, 0.01Ru-NiMoO4/NF possesses excellent NO2-RR performance with NH3 yield of 20249.17 +/- 637.42 mu g h-1 cm-2 at -0.7 V and FE of 95.56 +/- 0.72 % at -0.6 V. When assembled into a Zn-NO2- battery, it provides a remarkable level of power density of 13.89 mW cm-2, outperforming the performance of virtually all previous reports. The efficient adsorption and activation of NO2- over Ru-doped NiMoO4 with oxygen vacancy have been verified by density functional theory calculations, as well as the possible reaction pathway.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic NO reduction controls NO emission and produces NH3 under ambient conditions. Herein, a NiO nanosheet array on titanium mesh is proposed as a highly active and selective electrocatalyst for NO reduction, attaining a faradaic efficiency of up to 90% with a NH3 yield of 2130 μg h-1 cm-2. Its aqueous Zn-NO battery can generate electricity with a power density of 0.88 mW cm-2 and simultaneously offer an NH3 yield of 228 μg h-1 cm-2. The NO electroreduction mechanism on NiO is revealed using theoretical calculations.
