Abstract:Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with a diameter smaller than that of a C-60 fullerene (0.7 nm in diameter) have been doubt about their existence because of the extreme curvature and reactivity of these structures. Although theoretical calculations have predicted the existence of SWNTs of diameter down to as small as 0.4 nm, experimentally, only 0.4nm-sized carbon nanotubes have been reported to exist in the center of multi-walled nanotubes. It is still not clear, however, that whether those 0.4nm-sized nanotubes are stable as free-standing SWNTs. Very recently, we have shown that 0.4nm-sized SWNTs can be produced by means of pyrolyzing hydrocarbon molecules in 1 nun-sized channels of AIPO(4)-5 (AFI) single crystals. These 0.4nm-sized SWNTs are of the same size of the smallest possible fullerene C-20. They constitute the best example of one-dimensional quantum wires, and would have extremely interesting physical properties, which are not predicted in SWNTs of larger diameters. In this paper, we report the fabrication process and characterizations of these ultra-small SWNTs by means of micro-Roman scattering, and transmission electron microscope observations. Their energy band structures were calculated using an ab initio first principle process. Electric transport and magnetic properties have been studied.
